Now that's a man who was taller than I expected. Of course he had to work with Fred Gwynne, who must have been up around six foot nine in his built up boots, which would have made it effectively impossible to tell how tall Lewis was.

@Ian C,

They were indeed vampires. Grandpa aka Dracula aka Al Lewis made frequent references to his old life in Transylvania on the show. His former title was Count Dracula, he mentions so on the show. The reason they can go out in sunshine and eat regular food is simply because The Munsters is a satirical spin on monster lore.

I hope this answers your question. Even though it's been years since then.

Yeah, I figure he had to have been 6ft from seeing him on The Munsters, he didn't look at all dwarfed by Gwynne aka Hermon Munster.

Rob, I think you need to find a photo of him just so we have something to look at, even if it doesn't display his height properly.

Here's a pic of him next to Gwynne from the show, I think it displays his proportions quite nicely as neither one looks to be dropping much height, if any at all.

He and Jim Nabors appeared about the same height on an old episode of Gomer Pyle I was watching a couple of days ago. About 6 feet even.

When I was a young girl he came to visit our house in Kansas City Missouri a couple of times, and we would go out to dinner with him when he would come into town.
Although I was a young child around 10, he always seemed tall, and I knew then that his height was unusual

Wow. Really? I thought he was knee high to a baby peanut, which is what you get if you're seen all the time with a man, Fred Gwynne, who was about six foot-nine when he was wearing a costume that included stilt boots.

As long as I'm here, does anybody know what kind of monsters Grandpa and Lily Munster were supposed to be? They couldn't have been vampires, as they ate regular food and went out in the sunshine.

I met him in 1989 at his restaurant "Grampas' in NYC. Suprised how tall he was probably 6'/6'1". But remember he acted next to Fred Gwynne who was over 6'5".

I think it's time to upgrade Lewis' height. The following is taken from the recently re-issued book, 'The Munsters: A Trip Down Mockingbird Lane'. On Pg. 55, the author states that, "Another misconception for audiences was the adult cast's actual height. Most people assumed Al Lewis was short. He was far from short, standing at a respectable 6'1". Yvonne De Carlo was the petite one, standing 5'4". And Gwynne towered over them all, standing 6'5" in stocking feet and 7 feet tall in the giant Herman boots."

Looked 6' 1" in North Hollywood 10 years ago. If you saw the Munster Koach drive away from the Beverly Garland Holiday Inn where he & Eddie Munster & Marylin Munster were appearing, it was one of the funniest sights I've ever seen. Cars were stopping in traffic going "Oh my god!". Some guy was in a Herman head mask driving it. It had no California plates. Imagine that thing being pulled over. "I need a VIN verification on a 1964 Munster Koach driven by a guy dressed as Herman Munster". I saw it again with the 1966 Batmobile. I think Barris had a plate on that. The looks on people as it drove down Vineland were hilarious.
