How tall was Gregory Peck

Gregory Peck's Height

6ft 2 ½ (189.2 cm)

American actor, best remembered for roles in films like To Kill a Mockingbird, The Guns of Navarone, Roman Holiday, The Omen, The Sea Wolves, Boys from Brazil, Gentleman's Agreement, The Paradine Case, Twelve O'Clock High, The Big Country, Moby Dick and Cape Fear. He said his height as "6 foot 3" in the biography "A Charmed Life" and also in a 1946 article, describing how during a 2 month break between filming he put on 20 pounds, "but I'm still only 185 pounds for my 6 feet 3."

A 1956 article mentioned him as being "six-foot-two-and-a half inch" and a 2002 biography described how "he shot up to six feet two and a half inches while in high school — growing eleven inches between the ages of fifteen and seventeen".

Nearer 6 ft 1 by his last years I think though he did have the frame of a nearer 6 ft 3 than 2 guy in his prime. I'm pretty sure his hair wasn't naturally as black as it appeared, though he had the features to pull it off. Often those guys who have enviously black hair it's too good to be true. In some of films his hair looked that blueish black shade, much like Tony Curtis's dyed hair job. Possible it was naturally more dark brown and he started going grey quite earlier on. Hard to believe he was only 5 ft 4 at 17....

I’m watching The Omen again and the music is really quite moving, other than the Gregorian Chant, which is the music that used to be sung by ancient monks, in Latin, of course.

⭐️ The chant is named after Pope Gregory, who was born in 540 AD and died in 604 AD. The Gregorian calendar is named after him too.

Ooh! The average Gregory is nearly 6ft! The name was well chosen for Hugh Laurie’s ‘House’ character; he’s well in access of 6ft. 😋

I didn’t know anyone’s Mum who didn’t fancy Gregory, mine included. Then when I watched him in The Omen, I saw exactly what all our Mums were on about! 😉

I saw him in an interview when he was way past his prime. He was still as handsome and charming as ever and the audience gave him an uproarious applause. 👏

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD. What a book. One of the forced reads at school that was actually enjoyable. Also one of the best book to film adaptions. Often I’d skip other books and get hold of the book summary for exams. Too easy. LOL. I wonder if and who might’ve been entertained for the role otherwise. The role of Atticus Finch was absolutely made for Peck and the child actors were perfect also.
Miss Sandy Cowell said on 17/Aug/21
I watched Gregory in 'The Omen' last night and thought, "What a beautiful man!"

This had nothing to do with his height, though it may have helped his confidence, but the way he treated his wife and his good manners, yet firmness to those he feared were messing him about. I mean, how would you feel if a priest came up to you and said that the child you adopted was the son of the Devil and that your wife is in grave danger?

Gregory cut a dashing figure in 'To Kill A Mockingbird', as lawyer Atticus Finch, but he could play an evil piece of work too, as demonstrated in 'The Boys From Brazil', which I thoroughly recommended to my late Dad, and I do hope he watched it.

My Mum had a mad crush on him as did many of the Mums of my friends. I can understand why!

In Captain Newman MD 1963 the first 10 mins or so provides excellent vision to compare Peck alongside Dick Sargent (Bewitched fame).

There’s a feel that Sargent has an ever so slight advantage but closer inspection seems to suggest pretty much equal. If Peck suffers any short fall at any moment it seems to be due to less than perfect posture. Almost every second Sargent stands ramrod straight. So how tall was Sargent exactly? I only found a few listings and they state 6’2” flat. If that’s correct I will say Sargent stood a very tall 6’2”.

Possible there was some extra “change” involved in Dick’s height, like say 1/4” to 1/2” which wasn’t necessarily included in Sargent’s listings.

In fairness though, if he was 6'2 and 3/4 I doubt those articles/bio would say and a half, so a strong possibility he measured it at one point. 190 at times is also arguable for Heston of course, looked it with Orson.
Arch Stanton said on 19/Sep/20
I was surprised when Rob siad he thought Heston had the better chance of edging Peck, I could have sowrn he would have edged out Heston in that film accounting for footwear. I see Heston as a 189 guy and Peck a 190 guy myself.

I’d put Gregory Peck at a 6’2.5” for his peak height, I wouldn’t discount 6’2.75” either. In Mirage, Peck is almost identical in height to 6’2.5” Walter Matthau. In their first scene together in that film, they are practically eye level. Rob, who do you think was taller at peak, Gregory Peck or Walter Matthau? I would estimate Peck as the slightly taller man, even when taking Matthau’s slouchy posture and possible height loss following his back injury into consideration. Peck and Matthau could have both been 190cm tall in their 20s, many sites list Peck as 190cm tall.

Gregory, who I last saw in 'The Boys From Brazil', gets every inch of 6ft2.5. He starred in some excellent films, there's no denying it.

'To Kill A Mockingbird', 'The Boys From Brazil' and 'The Omen' are a mere three. I can see why our Mums were crushing on him, indeed I do!
Ian C. said on 23/May/20
Really? Peck grew eleven inches in three years? (Fifteen to seventeen is three years, if you count the time from the first day he was fifteen to the last day he was seventeen.) That much growth in so short a period must have stung some. From fifteen to seventeen, I grew four inches tops, and I'm tall.

The personification of “Tall, Dark and Handsome “, Gregory played Atticus Finch in “To Kill A Mockingbird “, one of the books my class were lucky enough to study for our ‘O’ Level in English Literature.

My favourites of his include “The Omen” and “The Boys From Brazil”.

6ft2.5 for this Golden Great. 😃👍

Miss Sandy Cowell said on 17/Feb/20
After many years since my first viewing, I saw 'The Boys From Brazil' again last night. It was a different film when you have a few years on you, the monster this time being Gregory Peck's Nazi and Hitler-obsessed character and not the many mini Hitlers he's produced. Hitler only went bitter and vengeful after fighting in the Great War. The young Hitler clones, who clearly had a taste for blood, but justice as well, were children, and the thought of killing them all was rather mean. (NOT Peck's idea). It's what happens in one's life that shapes us.

I found it quite amusing that the boys were supposed to be 'beautiful' and 'supremely intelligent'. I would never call Hitler a beauty aside from his vivid blue eyes, but owned by him they were the windows to callousness and ruthlessness.

Gregory was the tallest member of the cast in this 1978 film, and can have 6ft2.5.

I think that James does not estimate Peck a lot ,since he always shortens this great actor. Perhaps Peck wore lifts in "the blue and the gray", but in most of his films, as well as in real life(look at many of his public appearances, where he was towering many tall actors, such as Mitchum, Quinn, Matthau, Grant, Moore, etc.. and was at least equivalent to 6'3 actors Wayne,Cooper,Stewart, etc..).I repeat: Peck was, at his peak ,even in his late years, a strong 6'3- 6'3.5 guy!

Dom said on 14/Feb/18
Always looked 6'3 to me, and managed to retain that height throughout his entire life, even as an old man. There's a documentary of his last years, made by his daughter, which shows him mingling with the fans, and he's still towering over pretty much everyone.
PLB said on 6/Feb/18
I wrote a comment far below on this page about seeing Peck in Vegas many years ago. Peck was skinny which I think made him seem smaller than his true size and that can get him remembered as shorter. The same sort of thing seems to be the reverse of why Schwarzenegger is often perceived as being taller than he ever was, he was once quite massive. People apparently sense relative size as a gestalt - confounding weight and height a little.

There is also what I will call the six-two effect. All the short celebrities claim to be six feet. But all the real six footers seem to try to claim to be six two. One reason is probably that the 'best' or 'optimum' male height (some say) is exactly six two. In Hollywood the five eight guys like Stallone want to be taller, but the guys like Paul Bethany who really are six four, want to be a little shorter.

I think 6.2.5 looks about right for Peck: compared to 6'2" actors like Dean Jagger in TWELVE O'CLOCK HIGH or Millard Mitchell in THE GUNFIGHTER, he hardly looked a good inch taller; if he had an edge over them, it was minimal, as he looked pretty much the same in most shots. Hard to see him as having anything more than one inch on 6'1.5 Melvyn Douglas in THE GREAT SINNER either.

As for Perkins, I think he was 6'1" flat. Yves Montand, who I think claimed to be 186 cm, seemed to edge him:

He was also similar height with Karl Malden in FEAR STRIKES OUT and, if something, he sometimes looked a bit shorter (I could more easily believe 187 cm for Malden rather than Perkins):

I think it was the movie you had mentioned before, The Sea Wolves, I cot a glimpse of the two of them, Peck and Moore, I have a vague memory of it though but I remember coming to the conclusion Peck was like 2.5 inches taller. As for whether or not the ground was uneven I guess it was and it's possible Peck had ground advantage . I supposed Moore had to be 6'1 and Peck 6'3.5. I held that thought for quite a long time but I finally decided to forget about the above-mentioned 6'3.5 'cause I didn't really know Moore's real height either. Besides, he looked visibly shorter than 6'4.25 Vincent Price.
James said on 19/Sep/17
Peck was known to wear lifts. Matthau had very bad posture and Roger Moore was no more than six foot in that terrible film "The Sea Wolves".

If Peck was only 6'2.5, how can you explain he outgrows 6'2.5 Matthau in "Mirage"?(he looks more than one inch taller). The same is true for "the sea wolves", where he outgrows 6'1 Moore ( more than 2 inches taller). Numerous photos of Peck in public appearances show he was indeed at his peak about 6'3.5.Compare him with 6'3.5 Wayne: they look equal in height.
Unsub 5'10 said on 7/Sep/17
Peck and Heston were 6'2.5, it's time to accept the truth, they both rounded up to 6'3 'cause they were indeed 6'3 straight out of bed. Years ago, I used to think Peck was 6'3.5, but I changed my mind, I will spare you the unnecessary details. They stood 1.89-90 in their socks most of the time.

Peck was American, yes, haha. A lot of people seem to think he was British. No, he just had a lot of class. Speaking of which, he seemed closer to 6'2 playing a Brit beside Roger Moore in The Sea Wolves. But he was old in that film. In The Scarlet and the Black, he seemed quite tall, looking noticeably taller than John Terry, who looked about 6'1 beside Timothy Dalton in The Living Daylights, and he towered over Christopher Plummer. In Cape Fear, he looked every bit of 6'3 next to Robert Mitchum.

Julie Newmar was considered very tall for a female actress she stood 5'-11" in scenes with Peck they appear to be identical in height, Peck maybe just slightly taller. I think Peck's true height was probably between 6'-0" and 6'-1".

A true English gent, if ever there was one, I miss Gregory Peck to this day. He still cut a fine figure the last time I saw him interviewed, in his 80's!

Peck at 190cm tall had no reason to wear lifts. I think same kind of zone as Liev Schreiber. Could look barely 6ft2 with bad posture but then straightened out near 6ft3.
James said on 18/Oct/16
Peck was known to wear lifts like many other tall stars.

AlexMahone said on 5/Mar/16
Tom please, you downgrade everyone on this board, everyone. Peck, Roger Moore, Richard Harris, Sean Connery...John Wayne and so on. And how can you know that Peck wore lifts? Tom said on 4/Mar/16
Peck wore lifts in that awful film "The Big Country" so he would look taller than Heston.
Sam said on 29/Feb/16
I doubt Peck ever wore lifts and based on how much shorter he looked than Chuck Connors in The Big Country, he would have to be under six feet to look a solid 3 inches shorter than Connors...

Here's a shot of Peck with Connors from another film, Peck has one foot up a bit but Connors is closer to camera so I'd call it a wash on advantage for either. Again I think Connors looks right around 3 inches taller.

I've watched Yellow Sky several times and Peck, while tall, is shorter than 6'3" John Russell. Peck at 6'2" seems very likely. I noticed he had large healed boots in The Stalking Moon and in Shootout. He looked huge in those films. In later years when he made Old Gringo he was noticeably shorter than Jimmy Smits (6'3"). I'd bet on a 6'2" young Peck. Nice height... great actor.

Ah, you're all envious. In Spellbound his character was meant to be 'wooden'. He was playing an amnesiac! He was the best looking man ever seen on screen, period. He was definitely 6'3", with broad shoulders and long, lanky legs. He wore a suit like no one else. He was Irish and had Armenian blood that gave him an exotic face. His voice was gorgeous. By all accounts, he was an upright man who was married to his final wife for 48 years, with no scandals or rumors to besmirch him. How many of you could achieve just THAT, given his incredible looks. Armchair murmurers!

6'2.75 would be a happy medium, seems as both 6'3 and 6'2,5 have been claimed, probably whisker under 6 ft 3. I think it's more realistic than 191cm, but honestly in virtually everything I've seen him in he looked around a legit 6'3", and seemed a bit lankier than some of the 6'2 er guys.
Arch Stanton said on 11/Jul/15
Rob can you tweak to 190cm, I think that would be spot on, under that is too low I think and would mean we'd have to start downgrading most other people!

PLB, he might not have been the most graceful guy (like Heston was), but Robert Mitchum claimed that Peck was strong as hell. Peck accidentally connected a punch with Mitchum during filming (Peck & Mitchum didn't get along off-screen either but that's another story) that almost knocked Mitchum out. Peck was a long-time rower and had powerful shoulders despite being somewhat slender.
Gonzalo said on 18/Jun/15
There were no good shots in Cape Fear to judge the difference between Peck and Mitchum. If anything Mitchum looked short next to Peck when he was barefoot in the pólice station. In that film I can see Peck at 1`91.

However, in Gentleman´s agreement or The man in the gray flannel suit he looked more 1`88-89 tan 1`91

190cm is possible and could look that in some comparisons but if you see him with Anthony Perkins in On The Beach he really looked 2 inches taller, and Rob has him at 6'1.5.

190 is feasible, a weak 6ft 3 is what he could look at times.

I was just reading the trivia for ' The Guns of Navarone'. One comment was that he was too unathletic looking to be credible as a mountain climber. Probably true. He was probably too tall also. But Stallone was too bulky also. The real rock climbers I've seen have been wiry medium sized guys. Climbers have to support their own weight. There is a best body configuration for that, and being tall isn't it.

I saw Peck in a casino in Vegas many years ago. He looked frail to me. I was 6'4" and about 280 lbs. at the time so most movie people seemed small to me. He reminded me of my cousin Willey's build. Willie was 6'1" but only weighed 135 lbs. Like Peck, Willie looked great in a business suit. In person Willie looked skinny but in photos he looked fine. They claim the camera adds pounds and I guess it's true.

I loved Peck in 'The Big Country' but he looked ridiculous boxing with Heston. Heston was just too powerfully built although they seemed to be the same height. Later Peck in that movie fights with Chuck Conners - even more ridiculous. Gregory looked perfect for an office not horseback.

From what I read he was one of the nicest actors in Hollywood. Always gracious and never self-centered.

I loved his performance as Captain Ahab in Moby Dick. I realize he was criticized for it, but that film as well as his characterization left a lasting impression with me. I think the movie is a masterpiece. One of John Huston's finest.
Arch Stanton said on 7/Jan/15

@Barker, I don't think Mockingbird is the only role that Peck excelled in his roles in Twelve O'Clock High, The Gunfighter, Roman Holiday, The Guns of Navarone, The Omen and Old Gringo among others. He could be stiff and less convincing in some of his early roles like Spellbound or Duel in the Sun but he got better with age & accured gravitas I think.
Arch Stanton said on 4/Jan/15
Question is, when did he begin losing height. He looks nearer 6'1" here Click Here Judging by the looks of them in the photo I'd guess that was taken in late 1970s around 1979 while filming The Sea Wolves (1980)

6' 3" is about right for Gregory. He is in the same height range , give or take a half inch, as several other big stars.....Jimmy Stewart, Gary Cooper, Randolf Scott, and probably a dozen more. The role in "To Kill A Mocking Bird" seemed to suit his style better than most of his other roles.

Arch Stanton said on 24/Nov/14
Rob can you add films like Roman Holiday (second or third from top I'd say), Gentleman's Agreement, The Paradine Case, Twelve O'Clock High, The Big Country, Moby Dick and Yellow Sky? I don't think The Sea Wolves was as remarkable as most of those.

I don't think he was a bad actor but he could be a little wooden in some roles. I liked his voice and demeanour but I can also see how a lot of guys would have disliked him as he was about as close to the stereotypical classic tall dark and handsome as you can get and seemed a little too perfect at times.
Sam said on 13/Oct/14
Yeah, if you look at everything, it's easily possible that Peck stood very close to an even 6'3". Even in his 60s, he still looked taller than 6'2" David Warner. I'd still say he would come in a cm or two below Jimmy Stewart or Gary Cooper at peak, though I think both are fractionally under-listed.
Arch Stanton said on 7/Oct/14
Agreed Sam, especially with Dean Jagger in Twelve O Clock High but in fairness with John Huston he looks nothing under a solid 6'3".

Jimmy Stewart claimed 6'4.5 (harvey commentary) and I think also 6'3.5 (winchester?)
Sam said on 17/Jul/14
Maybe 6'2.75" is a better call, seemed to be a little shorter than Gary Cooper, only fractionally taller than 6'2.5" Charlton Heston and never a full inch over 6'2" Dean Jagger. I could also see any of these guys being a quarter inch over that, i.e. Heston at 6'2.75", Peck at 6'3" and Cooper at 6'3.25"-6'3.5", which would also make Jimmy Stewart also in that range.
Sam said on 1/Jul/14
Sorry, took a little break back then Arch...
I don't question 6'3" for Peck, but I'm not sure why he looks considerably shorter than Gary Cooper here, but I'd guess the cameraman took it kind of sideways with an angle favoring Cooper.

Sam would you agree that Peck sounded Irish? For an American his accent is unusual. It's similar to Pierce Brosnan's actually, very softly spoken. Irish American accent I call it. Wasn't Peck's father Irish or something, it must have rubbed off on him from a young age.
Arch Stanton said on 30/Apr/14
I wasn't too impressed with the lead actor in Scent of a Woman actually and you have a point about the plot I guess, but it was Pacino's eyes and performance and Philip Seymour Hoffman's presence which made it feel like a great movie to me. Yeah you're right, he did look a bit taller than Warner in the Omen, but in The Boys from Brazil he looked more 3 inches on Mason than 4 I thought.
Sam said on 30/Apr/14
Not really, I loved A Few Good Men back when I saw in it the theater as basically a kid but I watched many years later and it left me cold. Similar thing with Scent of the Woman, although I thought Pacino was really good, I didn't think the material was as strong as I remembered.
As an aside (speaking of later day performances), I thought Peck was really good in The Omen, giving a lot of gravitas and relatable emotion to it, I don't think it would nearly as good without him. Also, he still looked quite tall, edging out a 6'2" David Warner.
Arch Stanton said on 29/Apr/14
Didn't you like Scent of a Woman or A Few Good Men Sam? I thought they were both classics. You don't like Tom Cruise though do you? I liked Pacino's eyes in Scent most of all, superb acting.

Sam said on 28/Apr/14
Back to Gregory, The Boys from Brazil was one of those hambone later performances that Peck's co-star Laurence Olivier gave a lot of, somewhere between menacing and comically campy, but at least it's great to see an old lion of a movie star cut lose and have fun.
Sam said on 28/Apr/14
I would opine that some of the '92 movies haven't aged that well or are just ok to me, i.e. A Few Good Men, Basic Instinct, A League of Their Own, Scent of a Woman and the blockbusters (ok, Under Siege is better than a Seagal movie has any right to be)...I think Of Mice and Men was pretty underrated...I would add Bram Stoker's Dracula to the mix, what a gonzo effort and that was the year I became a teen and Sadie Frost was my first huge screen crush.
Of 90s, I like '94 better: Pulp Fiction, Ed Wood, Speed, Dumb and Dumber, The Lion King, True Lies, Natural Born Killers, Leon: The Professional, The Ref, Priest, Bullets Over Broadway, Crumb, Hoop Dreams, Shallow Grave, Three Colors: White & Red plus (not my favorites) Forrest Gump, Four Weddings and Funeral and Muriel's Wedding.
We agree that it never got as good again after the 70s, only a few of the Great New Hollywood guys were as good after as during that decade, i.e Scorsese, Spielberg, maybe De Palma; what happened to Friedkin, Lucas & most of the rest.
Arch Stanton said on 27/Apr/14
Chilling? Really? I thought he was quite comical.
Arch Stanton said on 26/Apr/14
See what I mean about '92 Sam? Of course there's other years like 1936, 1944, 1953, 1957/8, 1963, 1971, 1973, 1984, 1993 etc which also had a good number of great films, but those I mentioned strike me as prominent, 1939 and 1962 especially. Yeah after the 70s there's a lot less. My favourite era is early 70s with an astounding number of groundbreaking films of new Hollywood, I love the edginess and change in style and the jazzy/funky music etc. I mean there's a countless number of bad ass films from that period. I do have a particularly fondness for 50s films though, especially in colour. I love seeing the 40s and 50s in colour. One of the major attractions of films like A Star is Born from 1954 for instance is seeing those classic cars drive by!

I can't see anything under 190 peak for Peck anyway, and he wasn't shorter than Heston at all. Later on he could nearer 6'1" though.
Arch Stanton said on 26/Apr/14

Yeah I think 1962 is arguably the greatest year in film, although 1939 also is right up there. A tremendous number of great movies, I think I mentioned loads of films from that year a while back. 1939, 1940, 1955, 1959, 1962, 1963, 1967, 1979, 1992 and 1999 were among the best IMO.
Sam said on 21/Apr/14
Thanks for removing those Rob, when comments start wishing cancer on an actor (even if he's already dead) it's a red flag. Yes, 1962 is a very competitive acting year...in fact, I'd say it's one of the best movie years ever along with '39, '55, '67 and the first half of the 70s. Harvey in The Manchurian Candidate would be my personal favorite, but it's hard to dispute either Peck or O'Toole winning that year. I would say in terms of long term influence on other actors, O'Toole would probably take it.
Arch Stanton said on 20/Apr/14

I don't know what it is with Peck and all the haters. Jealousy? Agree with Sam that he was quite charming in a lot of roles, even if he wasn't the best of actor. I actually preferred him to Lancaster at least in the 40s and 50s, I liked his demeanour and voice. Later on Lancaster became a much better actor. I actually thought he deserved the Oscar in 1962, his best performance in Mocking Bird. Yes, O Toole was also deserving of recognition for Lawrence but it was more later IMO on that Peter o Toole was truly robbed of Oscars, 1968 for one. Laurence Harvey was also a great actor who was robbed of Oscars, he should have won it in 1962 for the Manchurian Candidate I think, and I can think of several others including Butterfield 8 where he should at least have been a candidate.

Man in the Grey Flannel Suit is an underrated film of Peck's. Most people say it's boring and overly long. A bit long, perhaps, but a very good film IMO. I enjoyed a lot of his films, Purple Rain with Bernard Lee was good I thought, aside from the obvious ones like Guns of Navarone etc, but admittedly I found ones like 12 O Clock High and Night People boring, both almost entirely set in an office/barracks.

that john must be an idiot or maybe he is insane or something, because you cant bee normal and say that garbage that he has said. awful, awful words, john.

By the way, Peck was 6'3, a legit and full 6'3. he looked every bit of it. Heston was a strong 6'2 but could look a weak 6'3 with good posture and in a good day.

Awesome actor, classic manly man, was great in To Kill A Mockingbird.

@John what a horrible thing to say.
Knowitall said on 1/Apr/14
Nope. They were the same height.

The Big Country is a superb western. It has quite possibly the best music score ever composed for a western. Jerome Moross deserved the Oscar that year.

Burl Ives and Chuck Conners were not the same age. Ives was born in 1909 while Conners was born in 1921. Ives looked old enough to be the father of Conners. His Oscar for Best Supporting Actor was well deserved.

i would say that he was a solid 6'3 dude at peak. In the big country, he was taller than Heston. Heston was about a strong 6'2 guy, Peck 1 inch taller or so.

"how did he not get lung cancer"? WTF? I'm a little surprised, the consensus seems to be he wasn't a good actor here. I think he was fine in the right parts, like The Gunfighter, Roman Holiday, and To Kill a Mockingbird, that called on him to basically play himself, a decent, strong guy who imparts good values. Also, I think he could hold his own in slightly more complex parts like Twelve O'Clock High, certainly he was not too hot in Spellbound.
Gonzalo said on 24/Mar/14
He looked around the 1`90 area. However he looked short next Chuck Connors in The big country and Designing woman. 7-8 cms.
As an actor, he learned to act as years went by. In Spellbound he was terrible. Extremely good looking man

I didn't like the look of Mitchum either, he looked like he'd be a bit of dick. Superb actor though.
Arch Stanton said on 6/Mar/14
Agreed with Sam, Peck was too gangly to only be 6'2". He wasn't under 190, but Cooper could have been a strong 6'3".

LOL, seriously James...

Mitchum was six foot so Peck was 6'2".

Rubbish. Mitchum was the exact same height as Cary Grant in The Grass is Greener and Cary Grant was more 6'1" peak than 6'0.
Arch Stanton said on 6/Mar/14
Really does look like a solid 6'3" guy next to Bergman in Spellbound. Peck had about 2 cm on Heston, see The Big Country, but Heston wasn't a full 6'3". He was at his most wooden in Spellbound, jeez he was bad in that film!

I think Peck was near 6'4 in a lot of movies: for instance, in "the sea wolves": between 11 minutes 16 and 11 minutes 36 seconds, he looks 3 inches taller than 6'1 Moore, and near 5 minutes 22 secondes, he is about 4 inches taller than 6' Niven. In "Mirage", he looks 2 inches taller than 6'2 Matthau. In "the big country", he looks one inch taller than 6'3 Heston. etc.. Looking carefully at many photos of Gregory Peck during public appearances,he looks taller than Heston , slightly taller than 6'3.5 Jimmy Stewart and as tall as 6'4 John Wayne.
James said on 26/Dec/13
Peck deliberately wore lifts in that awful movie "The Big Country" so he would look taller than Heston.
Sam said on 18/Dec/13
I don't think Peck looks as low as 6'2" in Cape Fear...in fact I think he always looks a solid 2 inches taller (sometimes even more) over Mitchum on screen. For sure, Cooper is likely to have been a bit taller, as in the 6'3"-6'4" range, whereas Peck is more 6'3" on the nose. I've read Peck found Mitchum unpleasant, one of the few co-stars he felt ok with publically speaking ill of. Also, during filming, Peck connected with Mitchum while delivering a screen punch and Mitchum said it was one of the hardest punches he's ever gotten.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 17/Dec/13
My thoughts exactly.

I even thought Peck looked more in the 6ft2 range with Robert Mitchum in Cape Fear
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 16/Dec/13
Rob, who do you think was taller Gregory Peck or Gary Cooper?
Editor Rob
Cooper probably could be a stronger 6ft 3 than Peck
Arch Stanton said on 14/Dec/13
Looks 6'4 in Moby Dick but he's wearing a hat and big boots. Looks like Abe Lincoln/Clint Eastwood in that film!
Arch Stanton said on 13/Oct/13
I think the barefoot scene is the best way to tell. Heston looked almost 2 inches shorter than Peck in boots which I think give about 1.5 inches, the heel isn't that big I checked. I'd guessed Peck was a little over 6'4" in them, so Heston at 189 looks accurate to me.Price did look near 2 inches taller than Heston I thought, although somebody here said they looked the same height! And Vincent Price of course was an obvious clear legit 6'4" guy.

he was 6'3. heston was 6'2.
sundance22 said on 2/Oct/13
Yes I remember that moment but I thought Peck looked 2 inches taller because of ground unevennes...difficult to judge, when Heston wanted to keep a good posture there didn´t seem to be much height difference between them, they looked about the same height, he used to slouch a Little bit, slouching can actually rob us of height,....the camera angle is also relevant...of course, Heston barefoot was not as tall as Peck, almost as tall as Peck..anyway..was Peck wearing a standard heel in the room? 11/2 inches , the 2-inch or higher cowboy boot heel is not as common...reflecting back on this movie and guessing Price had 11/2 inches on Heston it is most likely Heston was 6'2,5" and Peck a full 6'3"
Arch Stanton said on 2/Oct/13
Peck lost quite a lot of height by his later years though, looked nearer 6'1" later on. Click Here Heston looks noticeably taller than Peck here for instance, Peck seeming to have shrunk to around 6'1 and Heston still near his peak.
Arch Stanton said on 30/Sep/13
Pause at 92:44, Heston barefoot as tall or taller than Peck? No way.
Arch Stanton said on 30/Sep/13
No he doesn't at all Sundance, it was because Heston had on a coyboy hat throughout most of the film, the ground was generally uneven in their comparisons. Click Here Pause at 87:18 for a comparison of Peck and Heston without hats and ground probably more likely to be even. Peck looks about 2 cm taller I'd say.
sundance 22 said on 27/Sep/13
I think Peck looks 1/2 inch shorter than Heston in THE BIG COUNTRY,so 6'2,5" looks right for his height, also when he´s standing in front of a shoeless Heston he doesn´t look taller than him...maybe my eyes were playing tricks on me but I don´t think so
