Rounding up your Height - 15thNovember
If you jump out of bed and measure yourself you may notice you are slightly taller. Officially I'm 5ft 8.379. But hey that's an hour out of bed and doesn't count. My real height should be after standing about for 5 hours which is closer to 5ft 8 on the nose. My heights. In that image you can see that, like everybody else, I lose some height during the course of the day. I'm really 5ft 8 on the button (my afternoon or evening measurement). Hey, at a stretch I could sneakily use the morning measurement and then round up to 5ft 9 in the same way the inland revenue generously allows you to round up any fractional expenses ;)

But I don't as for any photos I get with celebrities, I am 5ft 8 in them. Although, if you're a celebrity, well, you have the liberty to round as you please. Hell, if you're 5ft 8, what's an extra four inches to friends eh? Nobody's going to notice it are they???

Jackie Chan's done well out of rounding. In reality, he's 5ft 8, but hey with shoes he can be 5ft 9, and maybe he's 'forgot' how to convert from cm to inches so he just says 5ft 10.5. The 1/2 inch makes it sound like he knows what he's talking about doesn't it? Then you have Anthony Anderson, who proclaims to be 5ft 11. The problem? He's met our resident celebrity spotter, Glenn, who thought he was 5ft 9, and in most pictures, Anderson is 5ft 9! But, you're a celeb...2 inches is standard...nobody's going to notice, except celebheights!

Measured 5ft 10 in the morning, not right out of bed, 3 hrs after waking up. I also measured 5ft 10 at 2:30pm, 4:30pm and 5:45pm. Can I claim this as my height without knowing if I fall below before bed?
Editor Rob says on 22/Feb/11
I think it's ok if you fall a bit below say 5ft 8 or a bit above 5ft 8 just to say 5ft 8, nobody says much fractions, of course on this site every fraction is argued over :) But once you are up 5 hours, for the rest of the day you don't really shrink that much more.
john says on 21/Feb/11
So...true height, in your opinion, is taken 5 hours after waking up?
Anonymous says on 13/Feb/11
I am same, lose lot of height like at least an Inch when I wake up I am 6'2.75 and at my lowest on the night I am between 6'1.5- 6'1.75, Like Just under 6'1.75 but a bit more than 6'1.5 I Just consider my height to be 6'2, 6'1.5 is my absolute minumum, I never go under that, 6'1.5- 75 is measuring being up 13- 16 hrs but I dont see many people who would get measured or have height checked after 7pm at Night or on waking, It normally between Forenoon- Mid Afternoon on average, I got measured at Doctors at 10.30am, 2-3 Hrs after waking and I was measured at 6'1.75- 6'2 I think so near my low by then, The Doctor read out 6'2 to nearest Inch and thats teh way I got measured in Army they rounded it off to 6'2. My Mate got measured at 6'3.25 but they put it down as 6'3, and I was measured there at 6'1.75 and they put 6'2. I always lose a good Inch basically, I know my mate lsoes 1.25 icnhes it varies, It's wierd, some folks only lose 0.5inch at best, I think my Doctor said Heavier people have potential to lose more height over a day due to spine compression.

I'm almost 15. My morning height is around 5'4 1/4 and my evening height is about 5'3 1/2. If anyone asks me my height, I just say I'm 5'4

Morning height - 5'11".5 Before Bed Height - 5'10".8 I just say 5'11"...
Lucy says on 30/Nov/10
My morning height is 176.5 (5'9 1/2); and my evening height is 174.5 (5'8 1/2). In the calculator, the average of these two numbers is exactly 175.5cm, so I always say that I am 175cm (5'9). Is this the correct way to do it?
k mart says on 27/Nov/10
i stand 6'3.5'' in the morning and about 5 hours later i stand a solid 6'3'' tall at night even so i only lose a half inch... drop of water in a bucket... i just tell people im 6'3'' or 6'3.5''

Morning- 6'2- 6'2.25 Evening- 6'1- 6'1.25 I lose an Inch like over a day, I class my height as 6'1.5, I usually go with 6'1.5 as height, It is basically 6'2 Morning and 6'1- 6'1.5 by Evening. There is articles saying forenoon is best time to measure- a few hrs on waking- physical's at school etc, I mean Midday is fine too.

Hi Rob, I am just wondering what is the best way to measure your Eye Level like say A guy who is 6'0 what would hsi eye Level be at roughy, I heard 5'8 is eyelevel for 6'0 person is this right or Maybe more 6'1, and also Rob what is your Eye Level I know you are 5'8/ 5'8.25, Legit 5'8, so what is your eye Level and how did you measure it?

Height- Morning- 6'6.5 Evening- 6'5.5 So If anyone ask my height I usually Just say 6'6. The key is always measure your height after same time spent asleep repilicate consistent conditions and same time passed upon waking etc always etc, The Guinness World Book of Records normally tka ethe average, It is good enought for a professional body like them so why not.

It is true, Heavier youa re more weight being carried by spine, Heavier peoples spines compress a lot faster than that of someone much lighter, I am same I lose a full Inch from 6'0.5- 5'11.5 I say I am 6'0, I am overweight too so that might be why I do too as mentioned, However sometimes Morning you feel shorter and on evening feel shorter soemtimes taller, It is wierd, Rob I have actually soemtimes gone below my evening heigth average after working nights and being on my feet for large number lf hours, It is very wierd, We go lower more we stand on our feet It seems, Not sure if lighter people have this or whether It happens worser to overweight people etc or taller people, My friend who is 6'5 has it, He goes down to 6'3.5 but he has a very physical Job too.

I lose 1.25 Inch from 6'3.5-75 Morning to 6'2.5 Evening, I normally Just say I am 6'3 raher than saying 6'2.5 or 6'4. K Mart are you a heavy guy because I am a haevy guy and that is why I lose so much heigth over a day, Lighter people dont lose as much height as heavier people in most cases.

I think guys who are maybe say 6'0.5/6'0.75 in day who say 6'1 and stuff fine rounding off bit like that and like when army and stuff measure if you are less than 1/2 in round down, 1/2 or more round up to next inch even taking your average height between your max height and your lowest you will be -+ 1cm and is not noticebale really, I know some guys who are maybe 5'7 and they say 5'10, so they are not rounding off height to nearest inch or so they are adding 3Inches which is beyond pathetic, It is like me I got measured 5'11.5/ 5'11.75 In the Day,- Mid Morning/ Mid Afternoon which is fair, I say Im 6'0 or about 6'0 rather than saying I am about 5'11.75 being petty and specific, I dont know many guys who measure 1/2 inch or more who would not round up anyway and that is reasonable, Not someone measuring 5'11.25 saying 6'0, Should say 5'11, but if 5'11.5/ 5'11.75 could even say it or about 6'0 meaning a weak 6'0, Hair alone and a persons build can make them looks over 1cm taller. If giving average you at best will be up or down 1cm as mentinoed and Morning Height maybe 2cm, Average it out or take height you measure Mid Morning- Afternoon, Rob Do you think it is ok to round up height if 1/2 icnh or more to an inch I think it is fair, In teh real world someone is not going to even notice half an inch I doubt when we all wear shoes etc and its not like you walk straight with great posture, A 6'0 Skinny Guy may appear taller than a 6'0 Heavy guy, so 1cm is not anything to be petty about, a full Inch yes. What Do Yoiu think Rob about rounding I think 1/2 inch or more round up and less than 1/2 inch round down, I remember Rob you said you dont mind people rounding up in cm's as opposed to feet, I think is resonable at best some guys will say they are 0.25- 0.5 in higher but Some Add a full inch ore more which is a bit of a stretch.

I am every bit of 6'3½" (1.92 m) tall in the day and at night i am a solid 6'3" (1.91 m) at night. I dunno about others who lose an inch or more during the day. i only lose 1/2 an inch. And yes your true height is 1st thing in the morning after you recovered from the force of gravity that your back is effected by.
k mart says on 15/Jun/10
my physical therapist told me to always take my height in the morning before i get pulled down by gravity. She said the tallest height you can achieve in the morning is MY "TRUE" HEIGHT. When a body is in a state of rest it can grow and revitalize itself. In the morning you are standing tall at your REAL HEIGHT
Anonymous says on 2/Jun/10
the 5 hours thing is not right at all, Never heard it beofre even from professional Doctors so I dont buy It, that jsut my opinion, Measure Morning, Midday and Evening and average it out, That is fairer, By that method Rob you could have a guy who is 6 ft 1 morning saying hsi height as 5'11
Anonymous says on 20/Apr/10
After 1-2 hours being awake we shrink already and are at our lowest so I mean if you give your height aroudn Midday you are giving Eveing Height really because you are at your lowest, Morning height is better or Forenoon.
Anonymous says on 12/Apr/10
Height shoudl be measured in the Forenoon- A few hrs after being awake.
Anonymous says on 12/Apr/10
I hear loads of people doctors etc saying also your height shoud be measured in Morning/ Forenoon always same time, here is no official time to measure your height.
Anonymous says on 1/Apr/10
Tek your average height, If you are 178 out of bed, 176 at lowest at evening, give height as 177cm take your average as that is fair and that is the height you are most of day anyway.
Anonymous says on 1/Apr/10
I dont believe there is any medically accepted time to measure ones height, If someone measures at 10am on Morning is fine, someone measured at 6pm in evening ok, different people measure at different times, the height you lose is not mcuh like 1/2 an inch, most people i know even doctors jsut take a measurement in forenoon and say that and are not aware we fluctaute height, I honestly think Morning height is fairer and more true than Evening height to be honest, because the height you measure in the Forenoon or Midday is what you are most of the day when you are out anyway.
y0 says on 30/Mar/10
I find this all weird - well my height is weird... Most recently I measured myself in morning and I stand at 5'9.25" and then obviously at night lose a little. However I've noticed my height fluctuates a lot more. After more measurings I have noticed some mornings I am at 5'8.5 and others as tall as 5'10 on the dot... I have asked different people to measure me as well and they all see the changes (not from being measured differently from each person). So either there is more to it than that or I have a problem with my spine more on some days than others lol!!
Anonymous says on 22/Mar/10
Jason, Dont use your evening height, It is not your height, Claim 177 as that is the average of the 3 measurements you have you could jsut say about 5'10 if you had to round it off or to people who dont know as mcuh on ehight, It does not matter, I say evening height is false because I can sometimes lose a full inch from morning to evening and sometimes 0.75cm, It can differ depending on what you do, It is up to you but if i were you I would say 177cm as taht is also how the guinness book of records does tahey take the average.
Anonymous says on 11/Mar/10
Jason do not give your evening height it is false and can vary give your height in forenoon or take teh average and say 177cm It makes more sense ,Your height should be measured in the forenoon, say you measure 190, go down as low as 188 as you can lose up to 3/4 of inch or full inch during day take your average ehight and say 189cm, I think it is fair to round up your height more than rounding down as most people would round up anyway in other things and say for example your height is 187.5cm in Morning- Forenoon it is ok to Just give your height as 6'2- 188cm I think.
tom says on 24/Feb/10
This morning height/ evening height stuff is silly, when you get measured at whatever time that is your height, I am 18 and got measured recently at 10.30am in morning and I was 187.6cm so I just say I am about 6'2 as i believe 6'2 is 187.9 but it is fair to say that i think, If i were 186 I would say 6'1, For em the ebst height range is 185-190- 6'1- 6'3
jason says on 12/Feb/10
Morning out of bed- 188.4cm Later Morning- 187.5cm Afternoon- 186.5- 187cm Evening- 186.6 cm What would be my height.
jason says on 29/Jan/10
I think Morning height is more relevant than evening height out the two because evening you at your shortest, measure around 11.00 in morning or midd ay or early afternoon and get your average height.
jason says on 20/Jan/10
It is weird, I am 16, when i get out of bed on morning I am 188.3 cm, In Afternoon I am 187 and late on evening a strong 186 cm, following morning out of bed I am 188 again, I am wondering what height shoudl you give your morning height or afternoon height? Any Ideas, What heights do athletes give?.

Yea, I think for most of the day I hover around 5'9.25", so I guess I can say 5'9"-5'9.5". I think most people probably shrink between .75"-1" during a normal day...but I know I lose a good amount of height really quickly. After an hour I'm already down to like 5'9.5"-5'9.75". Thanks for the comments...this site is sweet for height nitpickers like me.
Jason says on 6/Jun/09
Well I,m 5'10" 1/3 (178.8cm)out of bed, like one minute after waking up. After 1 hour I´m 5'10" (177,8cm). I´ve noticed that I lose more height while in a sitting position rather than standing. Like If use the computer for 8 hours I will be 5'9" 1/4 (176cm) in the evening, otherwhise I will be closer to 5'9" 1/2 (176,5cm). If I lie for 1 hour I usually recover 0,5cm and will be 177cm. So I can lose more than 1 inch during a day. I usually tell people I´m 176cm, which is my evening height. It doesn´t seens fair to use morning height as it falls fast along the day, unless you are lying on a bed most of the time.
Korben says on 4/May/09
194.5 in the morning 192-193 depending on what Ive been doing during the day at night. I call myself 6'4 as im 193 most of it, but sometimes sneak in the "and a half" lol
Big King says on 2/Apr/09
Well, I stand slightly over 6'6" or 198,4cm out of bed. After at least one hour I'm down at 197,5cm (6'5.75) and after three hours I'm 197cm (6'5.5"), In the evening I'm slightly under 197cm. I first used to take my morning height 6'6" but then I unfortunately noticed that it makes more sence to take my height as 6'5.5" or 197cm. But I still think that it is fair enough to use the morning height because most measurements are in the morning, about one hour after being awake like in the physical examinations in school for example. School starts at 8 a.m. and most students get up at 7 a.m. for school and they get measured in the first hour at 8 a.m. Also the most measurements at the doctor are in the forenoon about 2 hours after being awake. So using the morning height is fair enough but unfortunately you don't have that height for the rest of the day. So I sometimes claim my height as 6'6" or 198cm and if I notice that someone downgrades his height then I just replay 197cm and I take my lowest height.
dani says on 1/Mar/09
I measured myself and im 5'115 or 181.50 centimeters and im 5'1050 or 179cm at the end of the day. I lose 2.5 centimeters.

Lloyd, i think it's reasonable.You gotta claim the average(5'9 1/2).

Anonymous is right.. your morning height is your true height.... I am 6ft 3.5 in tall for the majority of the day... at night i sit right under 6ft 3in by 1/4in.. so when people ask how tall i am i tell them i am 6ft 3.5in!!!!
GF says on 18/Jan/09
lloyd, that's crazy. Those are all EXACTLY my heights and at the EXACT same times of day. Wow. I would claim either your morning height or your mid day height when people will see you. Never your before bed height. The fact is 99% of people don't even know we fluctuate height anyway. I've even spoken to Doctors that didn't know.
lloyd says on 14/Aug/08
I'm 5'10 straight out of bed, after 5 hours I'm 5'9 1/2...but right before bed (after 16 hours) I'm 5'9 1/4. This is on a normal day where I'm standing and walking around a typical amount of time. If I lay around most of the day, I will still be 5'9 1/2 before I go to bed...but if I'm on my feet all day or doing a lot of physical activity I will shrink down to 5'9. I usually claim 5'9 1/2 for my height (used to claim 5'10). Is that reasonable or should I say 5'9?
Alex says on 14/Jul/08
I am 6'0.75 right out of bed, 6'0.5 shortly after and 6'0-6'0.25 after being up for 5-6 hours. At times I can get down to 5'11.75 after being up for like 10 hours and on my feet all day working.

im 5' 10 . 25 in the morning but i shrink to 5' 9 flat before going to bed.
Anonymous says on 22/Jul/06
My doctor told me you should always always weight and measure yourself first thing in the morning. I've never heard of this '5 hours standing' thing before - sounds strange to me. And besides, the only reason we 'shrink' during the day is because after we've been standing up for a while we lose our posture and our spines compress a little more. So keep standing tall with your shoulders back and theres really no reason for it to change all that much.
Smoke says on 21/May/06
So which is the real height then the morning afternoon or evening. I mean at the end of the day if you weigh yourself in the morning that is your real wait since you have not had food which would make you heavier. Why should height be any diferent?

don't break my confidence!1 lol. I'm almost 15 and im 5'9" 1/2 but when i wake up i'm 5'101/4 or so..

I measured my height a couple of week's ago. Immediately after bed, I was 193.5cm, after 1 hour, I was 192.5, and right before I go to bed again, I was around 191.5-192cm
Gossip says on 13/Jan/06
I didnt know that happened. I just guess I dont measure my height first thing in the morning...
Antonio says on 28/Nov/05
I love this article. When I immediately get out of bed, I'm 5'10''(178cm). When I noticed this I got scared, I couldn't believe it. I'm originally 5'9''(176cm). I'm still 16 years old though. I got really happy when I first noticed it, but when I noticed I wasn't as tall in the evening I got so pissed. I studied this for about a week. So I lose about 2-3cm after I wake up.
When I'm in school I notice kids a bit taller than me, the next day I'm taller than them with the same shoes too(both of us), it goes on like a chain. My doctor told me I'm going to be around 6ft. Science is so amazing.
CelebHeights Editor says on 15/Sep/05
I'm pretty sure the younger you are the more likely there will be more 'shrinkage'. In my own case, nearly 30 the very first thing (literally 10 seconds from jumping out of bed) I am 174.2cm. The lowest I measure in the evening is basically bang on the 172.7-8 cm mark. So I lose 1.4cm. Some people surprisingly can lose an inch. I think the average is probably 1/2 inch but I don't know any studies that have done such measurements properly...
