This website is ridiculous. People here say things like; "there is no freaking way he is 6'2.5, I'd give him 6'2" tops." Don't you realise that .5 of an inch is about the length of your thumbnail! There is no way you can judge somebody's height that accurately from a photo, especially when you can't see their feet.

Kramer is one of my all-time favorite giants. Perhaps because he seems happy and incredibly healthy. Biographical information is sadly lacking (possibly due to the fact that he had about six aliases). I also am unsure about his actual peak height. I've seen his height mentioned as anything between 7'8" and 9'2." I think he's 7'10" or perhaps a little more. I am 90% sure that he was not acromegalic. (look at his hands and feet in any picture). Are 5ft10, 5ft11 and 6ft the best 'social' heights? I think so. People aren't afraid / cautious of you like they would be a 6ft2, 6ft3+ guy and you aren't an adolescent boy sized 5ft7, 5ft8 either.

Dylan, thanks for your comments. I respect the fact that you do seem honourable and will admit things if you find them to be true. You could easily have said Sammo and Bruce were the same size if you wanted to be stubborn.
I don't know for sure if Chuck was exactly 5ft10, but he doesn't seem short next to Bob Wall, and we know Bob Wall is even taller than Joe Lewis.
Chuck may still have a 5ft9 morning height, but i cannot say with any degree of certainty. I don't really follow Chuck, or haven't seen that much of him of late to be honest.
So i wll be fair. It is possible Bruce never was 5ft8 but 5ft7.5 was his top height.
Bruce may have had delusions of granduer when he measured himself at that height. But we will never know for sure.

JAK well this one guy I know has grown to a solid 6ft and is 20 years old well his dad is 6ft4 and his mum is 5ft8 he should be 6ft2.5 with his parents height genetics.
It could just be that he spent all his teenage and child years eating chocolate.
I have said this before but a lot of the time sons don't grow to the height of there VERY tall farthers and it is influenced quite a lot by how tall the mum is obviously.

Hmmm! I have watched that sequence of Bruce Vs Sammo in Enter the Dragon again and although I dislike being wrong I would have to admit that if Sammo was 5'7" in that sequence (and all the information I have looked up on the internet suggests he was) then Bruce would have to have been at least 5'7.5". Oddly enough there looks a greater height difference between Bruce and Sammo in that clip than there did between Bruce and Bolo in the photograph I saw. Perhaps Bolo was wearing trainers and Bruce flat Kung Fu slippers.

Look at the photo Anonymous put up, Cruise has Glenn by about 1.5", when a person is 5'6.5" they get owned by the above. Glenn isn't edging Tom, Tom is owning Glenn. When a person is barely taller than a VERY short Emile Hirsch, they are quite short. Look at where the line is and the shape of their heads. Toms smile says it all.

Well 5'6 for a woman is taller than normal, like 6'0 for a man. So if the dad is 6'5, which is very tall and the mum is quite tall then its no surprise if the daughter is tall.
Basically, genes work like this:
Tall gene is usually dominant
Short gene is usually recessive
But average genes are the strongest, although influenced by other variations of the gene. Nature doesn't want 'freaks'.
So a 6'2 man (tall) and a 5'4 woman (average) will most likely have a tall or average child. A 6'2 man and a 4'9 woman will either have an average or slightly shorter than average child. 6'2 man and 5'10 woman will have tall children.
Then there is 'reduction to the mean' where even if both parents are very tall/short, the child will end up average because nature wants to keep things in check, and not end up generations of giants and midgets.
And sometimes an early ancestor who is very tall/short will have his/her genes pop up again in a usually short/tall family.

No one is saying Sammo Hung is 5ft7, apart from Rob. Are you saying Rob don't know his thing? Sammo Hung was at his peak height in ETD yet is shorter than Bruce. Rob can calculate himself how tall Bruce probably is then. He seems very intelligent.
I don't recall anyone saying Bruce is 5ft9. But the fact that he was taller than a peak Sammo suggests to me you shouldnt be crying just because Bruce is being registered as 5ft7.5.

Dave, nobody in here is ‘delusional’ to say that height does not play a major factor in attracting females. It has been since the birth of men and always will be. But you are also being delusional when you say that height is the only major factor in attraction and is the ‘be all and end all’ factor in relationships.
At 171 cm, you are definitely below average but you don’t deviate terribly off what is considered an average height. If you are that concerned about height, maybe you should put 1 inch insoles inside your dress shoes to put you around 176 cm, which puts you a lot closer to the mean. But more importantly bring other factors to the table to make up for your lack of physicality.
You’ve still got a pool of decent sized 5’3 to 5’4 girls that you are clearly taller than (heels or not) and you shouldn’t feel uncomfortable at all standing next to them. Yes, some shallow ones still want a six footer, but a lot also don’t really care, as long as you are taller. To deny this, if I may borrow your patented term would be ‘delusional.’
If you still keep getting rejected by short women, well then maybe height isn’t the only thing you are lacking. But it sure is convenient to make it as an excuse though right?

Kosen´s lying down height is 8´1 and actual standing height about 7´10! He can stand also 8´0 but it´s too hard for him to stand straight all the time. Don´t ask how i know this=) I made some calls.

Shock, I matched the heads up from the chin level. Their heads are of similar length from the eyes down (Big Show's looks slightly longer - maybe around 1/4") but from the eyes up, it's probably more than a 1 inch advantage for Big Show. Khali probably has close to 4.5" from his eye brows to the top of his head. That same distance for Big Show looks at least an inch longer. His forehead is gigantic.

Anyone who says 5'8-5'10 isn't average height has their perspective mixed up. 6' + is tall. Obviously the more you clear it the 'taller' you will be in the 'tall' classification.
Anything over 6'3 and you will be known as that 'tall guy' unless you are in a basketball team or hang around with very tall people.

Against the 6feet Joe Lewis he is perhaps a couple of inches shorter. Making the 5,10 in his prime height very likely. Chuck was a strapping lad when he was young.
People want to know Lee at his top height, and not when he was at his shortest. Guiness world record books when measuring the tallest man in the world takes measurements of the waking height over 5 days and then takes the average height as the recorded figure.

If I could choose a height, I'd pick the unspectacular 5'11.5-6'1" range. Being taller would come in handy for basketball, but other than that, it would probably be wasted. In the range I listed, a person never comes across as awkwardly tall and IMO, clothes tend to fit them better and there is probably never a time when they are too big for something (i.e. fitting comfortably in a smaller car). It also seems easier to pack on aesthetically pleasing muscle mass/proportions compared to very tall guys (think Brad Pitt or Matthew McConaughey even though both aren't quite in that range).

Of course, his hands are probably larger than the majority of 7 footers, but a few 7 footers probably have bigger hands and feet than Kosen. If I heard correctly on the Today Show, his shoe size is 'only' size 22 Us. Hey rob, is it true that if your house is on a slope, it will affect the reading of your height? Cause my friend said that he measured his height at home and he said he's 182cm, but he's the same height as me and im 186cm, measured at October this year at doctor's.

The famous pic of Bruce Lee standing next to Dan inosanto giving the victory sign, a healthy Bruce is clearly at least 2 inches taller than Dan. I wouldn't get overly sensitive about couple of short comments you got from your 4 feet teacher or one of your classmates. I am around 5'9.5/5'10 and I have been estimated at 5'6 by some tiny girl until I got close to her, completely towered her and only then did she admit "oh maybe I was wrong." Bottom line is some women, especially short ones are horrible at judging men's heights because they obviously get towered over by virtually everyone and they really have no perception of what certain height differences are supposed to look like. Partially true. However, it only works when estimating height at roughly the same level as the camera level. The camera in the Andre/Backlund pic is at around the abdominal level, so yes an estimate of their respective inseam lengths can be made from that pic based on the level of the cinder block wall behind them.
When the camera is lower than the top of the guy's head, you end up with an inflated height estimate if you try to peg the guy's height based on where the top of the head would be vis-ŕ-vis the level of the cinder block wall behind him. If you do, Ted DiBiase becomes 6’7” in his thin-soled wrestling boots Click Here which is probably 4 inches taller than his peak barefoot height.

I have seen the film Enter The Dragon, I don't remember making any observations about whether Sammo Hung was taller than Bruce, in fact I had no idea how tall Sammo Hung was until you mentioned it. I will say one thing though, when Bruce was at his peak the average height of a man was 5'8" and it was a recognised fact that oriental people were shorter than Europeans, therefore if Bruce would have been 5'7.5" or 5'8" he would not have looked so short then. Nowadays, he would have because people are taller. Bruce is wearing platform shoes with flared jeans in that photograph, anyone with half a brain can see that. The platform shoes were designed with a 3" heel so that people could by a longer leg than they normally do, for example if you took a 31" inside leg you would buy 33" which would hang over the jeans. These shoes were at the height of fashion in the early seventies, and I have seen pictures of Bruce wearing them often. Until recently I had no idea how tall Chuck Norris was but people who have met him claim he was only about 5'8.5" even though he claimed 5'10" I think he was probably a similar height to Sylvester Stallone, 5.8" claiming 5'10". Now let me ask you a couple of questions. Do you really think Bruce would have been as tall as say, Tom Cruise? and if you think he was 5'7.5" do you think that was his height on rising? Bearing in mind we all lose around 0.5" during the course of the day.

OMG!!! these are some pretty serious heels! they're almost as big as Downey Jr's on Iron Man!... BP was about an inch taller than RR on Spy Game, so what would he measure without those Man-heels, considering RR is about 5'10" and is wearing regular 1" shoes? You know guys you all attack Vibram for his attitude about height, you all say that this bordelrline is illusion and maybe it really is BUT! I had a very curious experience half a year ago. My class prepared a performance to a graduation and our teacher was a director, she wanted us to stand in a row with a girl. Before telling further I say that there's no girl in my class who is taller than me, the tallest was 5ft8. And I'm 5ft10 and in my class 4 of 11 guys are taller than me, one is 6ft6, second is 6ft2.5, third is 6ft and the last is 5ft11. Other guys shorter than me, 5ft8-5ft9.5 range. So I'm solid average. So our teacher, she's about 4ft10, a foot shorter than me!!! She said to me "You're short! I don't know what girl should stand next to you". And one girl(she's about 5ft6) said "ye, he's little!". That day I was in 1.2 inch basketball shoes so I was almost the same as that 5ft11 guy of my class. And even she said "He's the same height as me" - he meant that he's not short lol! But everybody ignored and didn't pay attention on his claim. I was shocked, and really pissed off cause I'm taller than 6 guys in my class and why me?? Girls then started laughing but in 3-4inch heels only one girl is taller than me, she appears about 5ft11.5 and other only aprroaching 5ft8-5ft9.5 but I'm still taller than everyone of them(there were 12 girls in my class). That day I was first and the only time been called short. But I still can't get what happened then and have no clever explanation of why I was picked as short? For me it's 8th world's wonder.

I would go by inseam and it looks like Andre would have about a 38" inseam which seems correct. I'm 6'0" and have a 32" inseam, so for a tall guy with relatively short legs, 38" seems about right. I recall reading that 7'4" Rik Smits has a 40" inseam for a point of reference. The Andre/Backlund picture also shows him to have about the same inseam as Red's picture. That further validifies the brickwall pictures are very accurate. Anything over a 40" inseam wouldn't make sense, but neither would anything under a 36" inseam. Backlund would appear to have about a 32" inseam which makes sense for a 6'0"-6'1" guy.

c-mo, yes 176cm is a very tricky height for a grown white man. It just falls short of 178cm and its agonizing. You feel if you were 178cm (5ft10) all problems will cease and you wont feel short or be called short, intimidated as much or embarrassed. At 5ft9 you can just tell if you meet say two guys that are 6ft (like say starting on a new football team), they consider you kinda short.... or they will say that. You hear them laughing behind your back. It's kind of disrespectful. I think 5ft9 looks medium if your big (bodybuilder physique) but small if your slim and no more than medium t-shirt size.
Footwear is paramount for 5ft9 range guys. Just this week I received some new winter boots: Caterpillar Certus boots. With them on I'm 5ft11 flat and I noticed I felt more confident than when I'm standing 5ft10.3 in my old shoes (Merrell Chameleon ISO olive green). 0.7 (3/4) of an inch doesn't seem much but it makes a world of difference psychologically. I don't think I could ever go back to wearing footwear that gives less than 1", only in my own company and family I would.
Most regular guys under 45 seem 6ft - 6ft1 with shoes / boots on around my neck of the woods, so I know barefoot they are in that 5ft10.25 - 5ft11.5 range. I just know 178-179cm (all ages up to 65) & 180cm (youth) are the averages for white men in Derbyshire, England. The 177cm National Average is misleading.

Lets face it, at 5ft9 you occasionally get stick for being "short" but not 5ft10, it just stops. It's amazing, its the psychological line, the schizophrenic line. Why?
Are 5ft10, 5ft11 and 6ft the best 'social' heights? I think so. People aren't afraid / cautious of you like they would be a 6ft2, 6ft3+ guy and you aren't an adolescent boy sized 5ft7, 5ft8 either.
Also i think men start to be "dwarfed", or "owned" as the youth call it, when your 4" and more inches below another man. Because 6ft1, 6ft2 are still quite common heights (I would say 7/8 out of 22 young men are reaching this), a 5ft9 man looks dwarf next to those heights. The 5ft11 man doesn't. The 5ft11 man looks small next to 6ft3+, but 6ft3 is still quite rare - only about 1 in 25 men are this or over. The 5ft10 range and 5ft11 men don't look owned next to 6ft1 and 6ft2 men, but 5ft9 men do.
The 5ft9 man standing at a bar, then a 6ft1, 6ft2 guy stands next to him. women notice and give the 5ft9 man a dirty look, like "your boy sized" "he's waaaay taller". It does look comical & weak. The girls pick up on it and their brain feels pity for 5ft9 because women find dominance in men attractive (physical / social). Now a 5ft10 range man doesn't look so dominated next to 6ft1, 6ft2 men. He;s let off the hook.

You know what, no matter what anyone says, Vibram will still be convinced that his problems with women are strictly due to his height. You can give him as many examples as you want of under 5'10"s who are super popular with women and tall guys who have trouble with them, but he just does not want to listen and admit his lack of overall appeal to girls.
Now, for those who are sick of this debate, I have some questions, the first of which I have asked several times and has been ignored many times:
1) I am starting wrestling in a few weeks and am thinking of doing some weight lifting. Now, the whole "Lifting weights stunts growth" is a myth, right? I could see that myth forming because building up muscle can make one appear stockier and shorter than they actually are, the ones who do see results from weight lifting are naturally shorter and heavier, and steroid use involved in weightlifting can stunt growth. I'm pretty sure light weightlifting like curls does not affect height, but is there anyone here who is sure that benches and squats that aren't super hardcore don't either? I just wanted to know that for future reference, but I probably won't do much heavy lifting anyway since I'm trying to lose weight, which brings me to my next question.
2) I'm hoping to lose a few pounds and get down to the 215 weight class. I'm 6'3", could get a 6'4" listing if measured in shoes. Now, I found the stats of some of the top wrestlers in the country, and their BMIS are much greater than mine. But I want a first-hand opinion: Would 6'3" be outstandingly tall for a 189-215 wrestler? I know there is a stereotype that wrestling is meant for stockier boys, but I know plenty of tall wrestlers, so I just wanted to know.
3) I've been jogging several miles each day for this past week, and have noticed that in addition to my legs being increbily sore afterward, I lose slightly more height by night time- about 1/8"-1/4". Is this normal for new joggers? Will this reverse as my legs grow stronger and less stiff and I have less fat weighing my frame down, or are my legs permanately compressing?

You are of an unspectacular height and you are probably not much to look at anyways..trust me when I say this, people probably don't stop in the middle of street to look at you and give you that “wary” or “suspicious” glance.
No wonder you can't get any girls to commit to a long term relationship with you even when you are in your 30s. Girls probably think of you as some ultra self conscious freak who has too low of a self esteem to make anything out of life. I'd be surprised if you got to that stage in a relationship with a girl though. Use the big Guy's head in the background. Top of Katie's head lines up about 2/2.5 inches above the big Guy's eyes....Tom's about an inch. Allow 0.5 inch for Katie's heels and I would estimate about an inch difference in their barefoot height. So if Katie is 5'9, Tom is 5'8. If Katie is 5'8, Tom is 5'7.
Regardless of height, Tom in standard 1 inch footwear = Katie barefoot height. The height difference when she is wearing 2-4 inch heels, would be 2 or 3 inches i.e Tom's eyes would line up with her mouth as they do here:

That because Bruce was the greatest fighter ever we should accept everything he says without question and what do you think he would have done if someone did dispute his height? Beat them to a pulp? GROW UP WHY DON'T YOU? I would definately have disputed Bruce's 5'8" claims because they were ridiculous. Would he have pounded me into the ground for disputing his claim? Possibly, though I doubt it, however, even if he did that wouldn't prove anything. He would have proved his point easier by standing bare foot on a stadiometer and confirming his height claims. Anyone can throw a punch at someone who disagrees with them.

Well the height difference between 6'6.5" Gotz Otto (Stamper) and Brosnan was a lot!! I saw about a 5-6 inch height difference. That would place Brosnan in this sort of range. Gotz Otto is one hell of a beast. Man mountain. Barefoot 199cm.

Mmm, the thing is a legit relaxed barefoot 5'9" should never look short unless compared to a 6'2" + guy as with posture and "normal" shoes they are likely to look 5'11" to the casual eye. But Stallone wears lifts and only seems to look 5'11" with stretched posture and dubious footwear. But he has looked short many times so it is a little suspicious. Maybe Hogan was right, he is 5'8". I believe Stallone can pull off looking 3 inches taller than his actual barefoot height with a combination of stretched posture, tip toes and lifts.

People like Phil Collins, and Roger Daltrey are probably not in the habit of measuring their heights, so the figure they are giving are probably heights they recorded themselves as years ago, probably when they just reached their full heights in college, and that is the height they remembered themselves to be.
But height as we all know changes constantly and is never the same. If someone meausred Bruce at 5,7.5 at one point, i would be inclined to believe it. And unless you accept it, you are calling Bruce Lee a liar.
Because i would unlikely say that to bruces face, i wont say it over the internet. When Bruce told a interviewer he was 5,7.5 the interviewer had the opportunity to say he was not but did not.

I am sorry Marcelo but that picture with Federer is inconsistant as Brosnan is standing at a lower angle when they shake hands. As for Firth, I think that he and Pierce are so close in height that its merely a cm either way and can favour either actor depending on footwear. Both actors look in the 6ft 1.5 to 6ft 1.75 range.

I think in the documentary, Curse of the dragon i remember Dan Inosanto say Bruce was 5,8, which if he was ever, it was the tallest he ever was.
Heavy weight training and gravity and disease can lower it eventually, which it probably did in Bruce case.
He could have got as low as low as 5,7. True in the scene with Samo, Bruce does seem to have the edge in height with Samo. Couple of inches wouldn't be far off in my calculations.

ABC123 and others- you are missing the point. It's no good saying "Have Guinness got it wrong again?". This implies a) that they measured Stadnyk, and did it incorrectly, and b) the measurement of Kosen is, to be blunt, a fraud. The whole point about the Stadnyk affair was that they DIDN'T MEASURE HIM! They took someone else's word. With Kosen they have carried out the procedure they always used before, and measured him with proper care and thoroughness. If we are going to disbelieve the result, we might as well give up giants altogether, and decide we have no idea how tall ANYONE is or was. With someone from the 19th century, where all we have is photos and sideshow claims, it's fine to play the estimating game, but Kosen has been properly measured. Why don't you get together and sue Guinness? By the way, what the heck has gravity got to do with height, Katu? Do you think you'd be taller on the moon? Aram, did anyone say specifically that that particular ceiling is 8 feet high? Ceilings do vary.
As for this talk about spinal curvature and "lying down" height, if your spine is curved you CAN'T LIE FLAT, so you'll be no taller lying down.

Parker - I didn't realise she was pregnant at the time of that photo but she definately looks it and as I say, Tom looks flabby! I don't see how you can tell the height difference in a photograph like that. When I was a kid they used to say the only way you can tell who out of two people are taller is to stand back to back. I notice from that picture her shoulders are quite a bit higher than Tom's.

She wasn't that much taller than Shakira in that video they did. Can't remember the song but they were dancing next to each other and then the camera was shifting back and forth between them as if they were the same person. Through most of the video, she looked 3 inches taller than Shakira. I seem to think they were barefoot but can't remember for sure. Shakira is suppose to be 5'1.5. Beyonce definitely didn't look like 5 inches taller. Could be 4, but again, more like 3 inches.
As for Ebony, most magazines are wrong about height in that they make the celebrity TALLER. Not shorter. That is because the celebrity or publicist lie or if they don't lie, they don't correct the mistaken information. |
