I think Alfonso used to look smaller, because his head is unusually tiny. As years go by, he's gained some weight, and his head/face looks fuller.

When it comes to aesthetics, proportions are far more important than raw numbers, like total weight or height.

yeah mate, unfortunately rowing is about leverage, so tall guys have a huge advantage. Also, when weight training, being shorter is a huge benefit, as you have to lift the weight a much smaller distance than someone tall. Therefore a tall person who couldn't lift as much as a smaller person may be just as strong. This is often demonstrated if you allow the tall person to lift the weight through the same height as a smaller person, so he is not completing one of his "full" lifts.
taller is better my friend, especially for rowing.

I'm 5' 10" and on my school rowing team. We frequently do weight training. Taller guy's are not physically stronger than shorter guys. I don't consider myself anything to scream about on the weights, but I can easily outlift guys who are well over six foot. I've armwrestled a 6 ft 6 guy. He was so much weaker than me, it was like taking down a child; I'm not exaggerated at all.

The average height of men in the U.S. is between 5'9 and 5'10. Thus anyone within that range is "average."

5'8 is a bit below average. Anything 5'7 and smaller is short for a guy. 5'6 and smaller is small for a man.

In hindsight though...most Hollywood stars tend to be small men whom gross salaries in the millions. The wealthiest man in the world is under 6 foot.

I tend to think 5'8 is short. That's just 3/4-1/2 an inch taller than me I dunno what's so special about that height. You maybe tower over a 5'3 girl, but you wouldn't tower over 5'7 girls (and those ones are very common nowadays) unless you want to look girls in the eye and make it kinda romantic then I'd recommend 5'8. Being that short has its advantages.

These words are insulting and not realistic. A 5'8" guy can not be a shrimp. I am 5'8" and I do tower over some guys when I walk on a street, here in Turkey. 5'8" is normal height.

This whole discussion is funny and kind of stupid to argue about. I spent the weekend with Alfonso at Brett Favre's celebrity golf tournament. He is a very nice guy who is not as short as you guys think. He is easily 5'7' and you can quote me :)

so rob , by looking at the recent pics with him and will smith , how many inches do you see? yes i do agree with you that 8 inches is a big difference. sometimes on fresh prince it don't even look 7 inches. maybe will is more in the 6'1 range? 6'1 min though.

rob, check out recent pics of him next to will smith on wireimages.com . he does look pretty short. maybe he had lifts in fresh prince? after i took a look at them .. i now think he can be as low as to 5'5 .5 . theres also a pic at the bottom of the page where 5'4.5 tisha campbell is towering over him in heels . please if you have time on your heights .lol i meen hands . check it out.

[Editor Rob: possible, if Smith is a snitch under 6ft 2...you could argue, although 8 inches is a big difference.]

I honestly dont think hes more then 5'6", I have watched every Fresh Prince episode, and Carlton really always looks no more then this. I have seen a listing for him at 5'5", and it maybe wrong, but 5'7" is definitely too generous, I mean smith would not go on and on about him being a midget if he were 5'7", it is short, but just not thaat short. I just always thought he was 5'5" and seemed to look it too, maybe im just being a prick.

Oh, please, in teh corbis photo, Alfonso in nearer to the camera and Will isn´t standing fully up. I've seeen many chapters of The Fresh Prince and is clear taht Alfonso is scarcely 5'5'', you only have to compare him with the women aisde him

thats rubbish ive seen ribeiro in LA and he looks like 5'5 even. hes damn tiny , he could even be less, but 5'7 no way, by claiming to be 5'7 shows how hollywood actors dramatically fudge their height.

In the early episodes of fresh prince, Alfonso looked 5'7''. He just as tall as Hillary, maybe even slightly taller. In later episodes, he was noticeably buffer, which may have made him look shorter. After season one, Hilary always looked taller than him. I don't know. Maybe he shrank to 5'5''.

I just got finished watching an episode of Fresh Prince, in which Alfonso in character as 'Carlton' quips to Will, "I'm tired of your little short jokes! I am average height!". Will replies "Yeah, average height for a woman!". I estimate Riberio at 5'5" or 5'6". Nothing more. Both Will and James Avery are a head taller than him, even with full camera lengths.

yeh steven is right, it depends where u come from, im egyptian and im 5'8 (173), when i go to egypt, i feel just on the tall side, where as when i come bak to UK i feel more under the average height. and yes the dutch are the tallest in the world. man look at thier football/soccer team...

I am from Sudan but I live in america now. I play basketball. I am 6'11" tall and I am shortest male in my family. My sister is 6'9". My grandfather was 7'3" tall and my father is 7'1". In Sudan many men were bigger than 7'. When I left Sudan and went to many places in the world everyone seemed to be short.

I'm 5 8 also but i consider myself avg because i have better posture then just about anybody, i can look as tall as a 5 10 guy with bad posture. Ryder, it depends on where you come from.

Here in northern Europe males are near the 6 foot mark. Dutch being the tallest (in the world actually) at 5'11.9".

As a 5'8'' male living in The Netherlands I do feel short, and am called a short guy. But if I was living in America I wouldn't be concidered all THAT short (American male averages 5'9.6'').

Haha, well it's great to see some us at proud of their height! I'm 6'1" and I really wish I was a 6'2" or 6'3" guy, a 5'8" guy can actually tower over a 5'6" guy aslong as the 5'8"er is wearing bigger heals! May I also note that Mr. Ribeiro, was indeed marginally taller than our "tall" and "5 foot 10 in heals" Vivacia, Vivica has definately learned to wear her heals since her star has risen, she was shorter than Alfonso during her appereance on Fresh Prince. I've seen Fox here in Toronto where she loves coming, and no way this girl is anything more than 168/169 cm without heals.

I'm 5'8 and i met alfonzo a couple of month's ago and he was nowhere near 5'7....I'm surprised you have him listed that tall......He's like 5'5..5'6 max...I towered over him....
