Ben is pretty tall for the family, he is cousins with my uncle who is only 5'3". We Italians are pretty short Frank2 says on 17/Apr/06
When I met him he was almost my height, but he could have been 5'11" and perhaps never stood up straight. By the time of Roadhouse he had lost some height. He wore funny-looking boots in that film which I believe boosted his height and he was still no taller than Patrick Swayze who is about 5'9".

I've seen recently a couple of movies of Ben and he appears to be taller than 5'10". In a movie with Ornella Muti"La ragazza di Trieste" they are both barefoot and Ben had almost a head over her. Ornella Muti is about 165-166cm.Maybe he was really close to 6'0" in his prime like my father say. My father met him about 30 years ago. Frank2 says on 15/Apr/06
Here's a terrific shot of Gazzara with lovely Quinn O'Hara: Click Here
It was taken back when he starred in Run For Your Life. Back then he was about 5'10.5". I've seen photos of him next to Bob Wagner taken at Universal and they're almost the same height. And I just remembered that Gazzara directed some TV series when I worked at Universal and I met him and he was almost my height and he didn't appear to be wearing lifts. He and Peter Falk were great pals. They'd be in a cutting room down the hall both smoking these huge Havana cigars and stinking up the building big time. Peter had in his contract the right to supervise all editing of Colombo since his glass eye would tend to wander and he used that excuse to be in the editing room suggesting changes. I am not sure about this height. Ben Gazzara was in the movie Roadhouse with Patrick Swayze and Patrick was clearly taller than he was. Looked like at least an inch. Perhaps two. If Patrick is 5'10" (according to celebheights), Ben would be in the 5'8" to 5'9" range in my opinion.
My guess is he was between 5'9" and 5'10" in his prime but likely now is in the 5'8" range.
[Editor Rob: possibly I am letting him off with the 'barely 5ft 10' remark] |
