I was pleasantly surprised to see Billy guest starring with the LSO in a classic production of Pete Townshend’s rock opera ‘Quadrophenia’. He did some songs originally sung by Keith Moon in the original album, and plenty more besides.

The concert had a tremendous atmosphere, with everyone being very friendly and affectionate. It was a joy to see Billy hugging Alfie Boe!

He’s definitely not 5-9 I have a picture with him from a few years ago in LA. I’d say 5-7.5 absolute best.

To this day, I still find myself laughing over the big impression Billy made to this comedian, in an article some guy below me quoted.

"Bill's about 6ft5, but looked 9 feet tall".

I went around itch Billy's idol in the old days back in England as we lived only 3 miles apart.
I knew him A Billy Broad from Bromley and I was from Sidcup.
I was a new romantic and he was a punk nod we are the same height 5 feet 8 inches but we both wore heels in those days as part of our clobber so, we may have looked a bit taller

Peak 5’9” most likely. Skinny dude which probably makes him look taller. 5’11” is ridiculous. More likely 5’8” than 11”.

Still laughing at the guy who described Idol as being 6'5 but looking 9 foot tall. That's just ridiculous. I'm crying tears laughing at the impression Idol apparently gave.

Saw him in Ljubljana at a concert in 2015. He gave an impression of average height, 5'9" sounds about right.

I think it's highly probable that the comedian was under the influence of some hallucinatory drug, or he's almost as bad as me when it comes to estimating someone's height. :D

Strange thing about perception, and how wildly it can vary - the comedian in this newspaper piece recollects an encounter with Billy Idol and states "Bill's about 6'5" but that he looked 9 foot tall! A fair bit of exaggeration involved, to say the least - but odd that someone remembers him as being unusually tall. Certainly not the impression I ever had of him.

Seems about right for peak. But remember Billy was in an awful morotcycle accident in the 90's where they had to put a metal rod in his leg and now is in his 60's. He surely has lost significant height by now.

There was a girl in my school class who used to bunk off lessons, so that she could hang around in the same bar as Billy Idol! She was 5ft5-6 and reckoned he was quite tall.
'New Wave' music was in its infancy then (78 - 79), and the girl in question wore a punk hairstyle in jet black. When she dyed it 3 different colours and refused to dye it back, she was expelled!
We were all disgruntled because she was a fun and interesting individual!
I think Billy must have been 5ft11 way back in the late 70's, though no way will he be that height now, so I'll lop off 1.5 inches!

He is quite a small guy, not tall at all and he used to be so thin back when he was younger, making him look even more petite. Most of the times he wore shoes with a significant heel, yet still didn't look over 5'8. In some videos he looks about 5'9 but if you look at his boots they were quite a bit raised. He is probably only 168-169 cm without shoes on, and But who cares? He was a very attractive man when he was young.

I saw Billy on the Whiplash smile tour 86 or 87; the video for 'Mony Mony was made at that show. I couldn't have been more than 20' away from him. I'm 5'11"; he looked about 5'7".

Met him in Daytona Beach 1983....maybe it was the boots adding height, but he seemed TALL to me.....like over 6 foot

I think he is closer to 5'8, except the dress shoes/boots he wears gives him at least 1.5-2" extra height.


Also, he is slim so it makes him appear taller.


He may have been 5'9 in his prime though.

I have a pic of he and I together somewhere. If I can find it I'll post it. I'm 5'6", and I'd say 5'9" is about accurate. He was definitely a lot taller than I am. He gave me a huge and my head was buried in his neck. He was... rather drunk. Haha ;}

I think 5'9 is about right. If you look at the interview he did back in 90 on the Arsenio Hall show, he's not that much shorter than Arsenio who is supposedly 5'11. Billy wasn't wearing high heel boots either. My husband is 5'9 as well and has a similar build. I think the suggested height here is correct.

I was at a concert as medic and he was direct in front of me for a short time and i was surprised that he was that small.

Iam about 180cm and he was max. 170 in my oppinion(with big boots)....really cant believe 175!
