Was easily 5.5" inches taller then The Brown Bomber ( Who was a good 6'0.5"- Was measured at 6'1 on tape but had those thin Boxing shoes On, either way Joe was over 6'0 which means the lowest BUddy could have been was 6'5.5" based on the pics.)

I didn't know Buddy Baer was listed here.

Cool. 6'6.5" sounds good. Suffice to say, he was cast in a number of roles due to his size, including the giant with some extra lift in Abbott and Costello's JACK AND THE BEANSTALK.

As to Max Baer Snr, though Nat Fleisher described Baer Snr as 6'3" in his PICTORIAL HISTORY OF BOXING, all other official listings for Baer were 6'2.5". I guess Nat was rounding up.

Some time back in the 80s I was lucky to find a 1930s edition of a boxing almanac in a second hand book store that had stats and records for active boxers of that era, including Max Baer Snr who was again listed as 6'2.5". The almanac cost me only a couple of dollars but I lost it since. Easy come, easy go.

Max Baer Snr also looked to be dropping enough height to Buddy for Max to appear not quite a full 6'3" but close. Also, Max looked about 6'2.5" as compared to 6'2" Jim Braddock. There are also pics online of Max Baer Snr with Gary Cooper and Coop looks to have the slight edge.

Finally, a while back I found a group pic online which included Max Baer Snr and 6'3" listed Victor Mclaglen and old Vic appeared a tad taller. I've tried to find it again but no luck.

Rampage, I believe Baer is under billed at 6’2”. I believe he is a solid 6’3”, possibly 6’2.75

And what’s your opinion on Primo Carnera’s height ?
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 17/Apr/19
Rob, could you add Max Baer senior?

I think 6ft2½

HI ROB,

I JUST WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW THAT PROBABLY ONE OF THE GREATEST AND MOST POPULAR BOXERS OF THE 20TH CENTURY IS NOT LISTED ON THIS SITE. HIS NAME IS JOE LOUIS. HE ACTUALLY FOUGHT BUDDY BAER TWICE.
Canson-194CM (6'4 3/8) said on 29/Apr/17
As listed same as Dennis rod man

Well, I certainly wouldn't put Cudmore in the same league as 6ft7½ Afrojack.
I can see Cudmore measuring 199-200cm lowest. Buddy Baer I think hit the 2m mark in his prime. Cudmore should play him in a movie. Same height and build
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 14/Jan/15
Rob, could this guy and Daniel Cudmore be candidates for a "weak" 6ft7 listing?
Editor Rob
don't know if I'd put cudmore as weak 6ft 7 range. He might of course dip a little bit under but I think most of day might hold 6ft 7 or thereabouts.

He definitely looked this in The Big Sky...I think in general he had a half a foot (and generally much more) over the other actors. I thought he looked the way a 6'9" guy would with other actors in a modern film.
Arch Stanton said on 29/Nov/14
I wasn't aware Rob had a page for him but yeah he really did look legitimately this in Quo Vadis.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 27/Nov/14
"Buddy Baer height: 6ft 6¾in (200cm)"

We have literally none of those, Rob
reuel said on 24/Sep/14
He was wonderful in The Big Sky and Quo Vadis. He was a great heavy weight boxer, like his older brother Max who once knocked Joe Louis out of the ring.
Mario said on 11/Apr/14
I'd just go with the full 200cm. He was definitely over this at his peak.

In the Gunsmoke episode from 1957, "Never pester Chester", Buddy wears cowboy boots with 2" heels to be taller than 6'7" James Arness. A similar thing was done in an earlier episode with Chuck Connors, i.e. to make villians outsize Jim, a very hard task. Buddy was one of the biggest character actors to ever work in movies and TV, he was huge.
DENIRO said on 17/Mar/09
My understanding is that Arness was actually self conscious about his height and preferred to appear equal or shorter in height onscreen. Chuck Connors on one episode with lifts is a good 2 inches taller than Arness when in reality Arness was 2 inches taller than Connors. Arness and Buddy Baer were virtually the same height.
deniro said on 27/Nov/08
Baer was huge. Looking carefully at Never Pester Chester, Gunsmoke episode, he does have lifts to make him slightly taller than Arness. He was 50 pounds heavier than Arness, but actually Arness was slightly taller.

I'm italian.Carnera in tv said that he lost 2 cm so he became 2,02.He was 2,04.When he began wrestling he lost other inches. His son said in tv that his father was 2,05.I saw a photo of Carnera with his family...he had two uncles(the brothers of his mother) that were very tall(I suppose 195).In Italy theese heights were incredible because the average height was 1,65(5'5")...

Carnera looks 6-8 or 203 cm near 189 or 6-2.25 Max Baer. Carnera looks too big and tall than Max!
alan said on 4/May/08
i visited the museum of carnera in friuli.he was 2,04 when he was a soldier. In television he said that he lost several inches when he began wrestling.

i've seen buddy baer in many movies and tv shows. most notably gunsmoke. james arness was 6'7" . baer was about the only person i ever saw on gunsmoke who looked taller ! i would have guessed baer to be about 6'8" . my favorite buddy baer movis was giant from the unknown. low budget sci-fi , but very good.

6'5 3/4'' they had him at ... that's 197.5. :)
thomas said on 26/Nov/07
carnera at his peak was 1,98.Some sources give him 201,204 and 205.He was taller than 196.
Jason said on 22/Nov/07
Carnera actually did have acromegaly.
Massimo said on 21/Nov/07
Primo Carnera was legittimately measured by an American doctor at exactly 6'5" 3/4 (about 1.96). If you go to boxing record archive you can check (by) yourself. Many people in Italia still believe he was clearly over 2.00 but this is just not true. I have seen the highlights of his 1935 fight with Ray Impelletiere (Ray was listed at 2.02) and Ray looked taller. Primo had a shoe size 17 (52 in Europe) though. I suspect he suffered from acromagaly because he had huge hands and feet. Have a nice day everyone!
luke said on 9/Oct/07
carnera's son said in tv that his father was 2,05 when he was 21years old.other italian sources say 2,04 and 2,01.when he was 16 he was 1,97.

Anon is right. That photo is primo, max, and jack dempsey.

Interestingly enough, here is a photo of Primo Carnera and the 3 Stooges:

and Buddy Baer and the 3 Stooges:

Primo looks bigger from the first pic, but who knows. Moe fits under his armpit.

tom, I think that if that is one of the Baer brothers in the photo it is Max not Buddy.Max was the elder and shorter brother but a more accomplished boxer with a devastating punch. Max was about 6'2.5'' apparently while Buddy was always given 6'6'' and I think this was right. He looks massive in the old films that exist. Carnera was 6'5'' plus but his size may have been due to a hormonal gland problem. His height and build was very unusual for the time and doesn't look that natural or in proportion.
Susanna said on 6/Jul/07
According to all sources that I can find referencing Buddy Baer, he was 6' 6.5" tall. Unless someone is standing next to a height chart or something of known and recorded height, it is impossible to tell height from a photo.

Watched Baer vs Joe Louis on ESPN classic fights. Louis was 6'1'' but looked like a child next to Baer. I think the height given is pretty much correct.
Blues said on 20/Apr/06
Come on here, Baer is always given as between 6'3" - 6'5" professionally, and he looks 6'4" to me, considering in 2005 0.25% of the population is 6'6" or over (and most of them have used HGH), imagine back in the 50's... look the 4 men around him, if Baer is 6'6" they would all be over 6' except the one in the middle (which is definitely shorter than 5'9), weird to me.

Editor Rob
Buddy is the taller brother, Max Baer 6ft 4. The guy next to him was 6ft 1, another boxer and Frank2's dad was 5ft 9.5...
Mikex said on 17/Apr/06
Max Baer is usually given as 6'2'' or 6'3'' but he does look big. He had a remarkable physique this being well before the era of serious weight training when athletes were not as muscular as they are today. More interested in women and partying than boxing apparently.
Frank2 said on 16/Apr/06
That's Max Baer to the left of my dad. He was 6'4". I have a feeling that Buddy was a lot taller than 6'5.5" since he was about three inches taller than his brother Max and in an old episode of Gunsmoke he appeared in, he and 6'7" James Arness were the same height. My guess is that Buddy was about that height as well. The fact that he was taller than Chuck Conners only reinforces it.

Editor Rob
yes, I give him the 6ft 6.5, I think he looks that big.
larry said on 16/Apr/06
He was HUGE for sure. Saw him in a movie with Chuck Connors called RIDE BEYOND VEGENCE and Buddy was an inch taller than Chuck!!!
