Burt Lancaster's height is 6 ft 1 in (185 cm)

US Actor. About time he done Birdman of Alcatraz he did not really look over 6ft, so possibly had bad posture or lost a little height.

Guys, you don’t know what you are talking about Delon. I am French and do not especially like him but one thing is sure: he’s or rather, “was” not less than 5’11. I met a lot of French stars including him, Belmondo and so many others when younger, trust me, a 5’8.5 Delon is just nothing less ridiculous. Even 5’10 is unrealistic!
Yet, Burt always looked taller and even more in “lo gatopardo”. He was quite tall also in “the train” when French actors are all way shorter than him without being dwarfs!
I maintain 6’1 when young until 45 and then, 6’ and 5’11 after.
So what? That’s what happens to so many people, known or not!
A friend of him told “when getting in any place, he was always the taller, the most elegant, the only one the eyes were turning to”.
He certainly was not the taller but looked so; he wore always the same tie he just put on at the last minute but was elegant because, above all when under 55, he was “the star”, the dazzling one with that unique American glint in the eye.

When Burt appeared on Martin and Lewis colgate show he didn't seem six one.maybe,5'11 and a bit.they all had their shoes off at various times in the sketch, its very interesting.5' 10" jerry, seems almost as tall as Burt, when both have shoes on.At the end of show they all stand together.Burt seems around 2 inches taller than jerry,if jerry moved to the left in Burts position.Dean seems about the same or taller than Burt, but of course Dean was wearing lifts.I"d say Burt in his bare feet was more likely 6ft or slightly less.

Mark,Bronson was 5'7"this is pretty well documented.Delon could be taller around 5'8.5" and that makes Lancaster 6'at most.
Mark says on 9/Sep/07
Talker, actually in Adieu L'ami Delon consistently looks 1-1.5" taller then a good postured Bronson. I believe Bronson at 5'8" gives Delon 5'9.5". In the movie Scorpio, Lancaster is about 3" taller then Delon. Therefore, I give Lancaster 6'0.5"
sam says on 20/Jul/07
I believe that Lancaster is the 6'1", as listed. He was a big, buff kind of guy, but Kate Buford's book listed him as 6'1" and he did look almost 2 inches shorter than an aging (6'3" peak) Gary Cooper in Vera Cruz. Talk of him in lifts I highly doubt, since he always mocked Kirk Douglas's lifts and, so I read, once hid them as a prank, causing Douglas to become so angry he cried.
talker says on 30/May/07
Tony Curtis listing is now 5'8".So you people want to tell me Lancaster looked 5" taller in Trapeze!!Curtis would have looked a midget.Burt looks 3"taller than Curtis, look at the movie..Lancaster was just under 6'.Niven was about 6'also.
Gonzalo says on 24/Apr/07
Delon was about 5`10, which makes Lancaster around 6`1. Niven was 6 feet at the most. Granger looked over 6`1 to me
talker says on 23/Apr/07
Partick,Delon is nowhere near 5'11.5.He is about 5'7" maybe 5'8" at best.Just look him up next to(well documented)5'7" Bronson in Adieu L'ami, they look the same height. Finally, someone who agrees to under 6'1" for Lancaster!!!!
patrick says on 18/Apr/07
He looks tall in most films and mainly during his early career; In "from here to eternity", he looks tall but when facing Monty Cliff, not that!
He was probably between 6 and 6'1 tops and was still clearly taller than 5'11/5 . Delon in "scorpio" though being close to 60.
Again a man looking tall because of his "prince" personality first and then of how well proportioned and slender ha was until 1969 (before his heart attack).

I met David Niven many years ago (we're talking mid-1970s). I was surprised at how tall he was - easily 6'2" as I am 5'10" and looked considerably up at him. He looks very slender on film, but in person there was much more to his frame.
talker says on 11/Dec/06
Burt looks 6'next to Curtis in Trapeze not 6'1'.He's got 3"on Curtis tops.Curtis is 5'9" at the most ,some claim he is 5'8".

Frank 2,Deborah Kerr is tall,do you have any idea what 5'5" looks like next to 6'people?
Stewart Granger was not 6'1",but 6'2".Try to see him in Scaramouche next to 6'3" people,Mel Ferrer and Richard(Bionic woman)Anderson.David Niven was easily 6'.
rasputin says on 1/Oct/06
I'm watching TRAPEZE even as I write. Visually, Burt Lancaster does look to be about 6'1". What is certain is that he has one of the most astonishing physiques in cinema; not an ounce of fat.... just pure ripped sinew. And his proportions are astonishing. What wouldn't I have given to be blessed with a physique like his.
Gonzalo says on 8/Jun/06
He looked around 6`1, maybe a little bit over that.
Frank2 says on 21/May/06
Burt stood tall in several of his films, especially Seven Days in May. In fact he stood so tall playing that crazed general that Kirk Douglas had to go into his closet and find his biggest lifts to wear for that film. On the set Burt constantly kidded Kirk about his lifts which didn't thrill Kirk in the least, but had the crew in stitches. I got that from the guy who edited the film.
Superman says on 20/May/06
If you watch Burt Lancaster in any of the movies he made he never stands tall. He's always leaning forward which give him something of a stoop. Watch him with Dean Jagger in Elmer Gantry. When he stands up straight he's the same height as Jagger. Then if you watch King Creole you see Jagger towers above 6' Elvis.
Mikex says on 28/Apr/06
I've read that Lancaster was officially 6'2'' but I've always been sceptical abou this. 6'1'' I can believe.
Frank2 says on 26/Apr/06
Lawford was routinely listed at being well-over six feet. MGM publicity listed him at 6'1". Then I read somewhere that he was 6'2" which I knew from watching Ocean's Eleven just wasn't true. In that film, Lawford was three inches shorter than 6'2" Cesar Romero who I had met many times since he was good friends with my parents. Then I met Lawford and noticed he was exactly my height so I knew I was correct. But Burt was tall, at least six one. I remember looking up in order to speak to him. With Lawford we were at eye level.
Frank2 says on 26/Apr/06
Well, Burt wasn't wearing lifts that day. That I remembered. The reason was I was checking out Peter Lawford's expensive black velvet Gucci's which had gold embroidery on the front and Lawford wore no socks which was sort of an in thing back then. Burt was right next to him and was wearing normal loafers. And he was at least 6'1", which means 6'2" in his shoes.

Now I stood next to him and spoke with him. Did you ever meet him?
talker says on 26/Apr/06
Burt was probably wearing lifts when you met him.I believe Burt was 5'11.5" which is tall in midgetland and he tried to seem taller because there were other action actors who were very tall.I cant provide proof here,i sent some snaps but there's probably a problem, since mr.editor didnt comment on them.
Burt was a great star and i wish there were some like him today in Hollywood.
Frank2 says on 26/Apr/06
There's no way that Deborah was 5'7". But Burt was taller than me when I met him and taller than Peter Lawford who was my height and at the same location. I saw the two standing next to one another and Burt was at least two inches taller, perhaps even three.

[Editor Rob: did you know what the scriptwriter wrote for the character of Peter Lawford in that ray liotta movie?

Angus MacFayden spoke (as Lawford) "I'm 6ft 2"...]
talker says on 26/Apr/06
well,if Deborah was only 5'5.5"then there's no way on earth Burt was more than 5"11.5" based on that photo at the bottom of the page.
talker says on 25/Apr/06
In my first post photo of this page, take a meter and measure both Burt and Deborah on your computer screen. Its easy since both are standing straight.Measure Burt's front foot and Deborah's back foot. You'll find that Burt is 14cm and Deborah 13.2cm.If Deborah was 5'7"(1.70m)doing a little math you'll see that Burt was around 1.80m maybe just a little more.
talker says on 25/Apr/06
Frank2,c'mon man,the Martin-Lewis photo is staged fun,the one with Lolo,Burt is standing closer to the camera so one cant really tell. From this movie i'll try and send some snaps that are more revealing.I sent some snaps with Robert Walker,Mr.editor please put them up.
Parker says on 25/Apr/06
I'm with you Frank, I reckon he was 6'1/6'2. However, if he was that would make Nick Cravat taller than the 5'2 listed on his page? More like 5'4/5'5 as I posted earlier? The -photo you posted had Burt a full head taller.

[Editor Rob: 2 and half, the half inch is very important ;-) Just like Radcliffe...]
talker says on 25/Apr/06
Frank2 the photos are inconclusive.Burt was the same height with actor Robert Walker, they look indentical height in "Vengeance Valley".Theres agood shot of the two of them walking side by side towards the camera. If Burt was taller than i think he may have been up to 6'at his best,he was never taller than that.
Mikex says on 25/Apr/06
Matthau had a strange stooped appearance which made it hard to guess his height when standing upright. In a film with Jack Lemon once I can remember Matthau's character as being described as about 6'3'', though of course this doesn't mean it was accurate.
Glenn says on 25/Apr/06
Silver Fox is better! either way,he was always sweet to me.
Frank2 says on 24/Apr/06
I think Burt was a solid 6'2" when he was young and dropped an inch or two as he got older. He was nearly as tall as 6'3" Walter Matthau in The Kentuckian and in that film Burt wore moccasins while Matthau wore boots. Walter lost an inch to an inch and a half as he got older, but was a strong 6'3" when he started his film career.
Parker says on 24/Apr/06
Frank - Thanks for posting the pictures of Burt with Nick Cravat. Burt looks to me at most a head taller than Nick, rather than a foot taller. So if Burt was 6'1 (which I think was his minimum height) that would put Nick at 5'4/5'5?

What do you think?
Frank2 says on 24/Apr/06
Cat? I thought it was a silver fox! The last time I saw Tony was at a book store in Century City. He was wearing what I call an "Orson Welles getup" meaning he was all in black. Tony is now on the heavy side and black tends to make a fat person look thinner, or so they say. He still looked fat to me. Tony wore these funky black pumps with two inch heels and was slightly mincing around in them. I'd say he was about 5'9" with those shoes. So now he's probably 5'7" barefoot. But he is over 80 so he's entitled to shrink a bit.
Glenn says on 23/Apr/06
I think Curtis is 5-9 with that cat on his head.
Frank2 says on 23/Apr/06
When I was a kid I visited the set of The Adventures of Superman. Reeves was quite tall, although they padded him up to give him more muscles. He also wore a girdle to hold in his stomach. I saw his suit and his boots and the boots didn't have lifts in them. No lifts are apparent when watching the show. The actor who played Superman who did wear huge lifts was Kirk Allan. I have a book on Superman which shows him wearing those lifts. I'll copy it, email it to Rob to post.
Paul says on 23/Apr/06
Frank2 - you have George Reeves listed at 6'2" below. His height has been discussed by Superman fans on the official Yahoo discussion group. This may shock you, but it seems some feel this was exaggerated! Noel Neill herself said that Reeves was 6 foot. Reeves' autospy was all over the board with 4 instances of 6 foot 1 of 6'1" and 2 of 5'11".

Supposedly Reeves' Superman boots were fitted with 2 inch lifts.

Noel Neill herself doesn't look more than 5 foot these days from pictures I've seen of her at conventions. Then again, she's in her mid 80s.
Parker says on 23/Apr/06
Frank2 - Are there any photo's of Burt stood next to Nick Cravat. On Nick's page he's claimed he is 5'2 - If the top of his head doesn't pass Burt's shoulder I'll buy it. Personally I always thought Nick was 5'6
Frank2 says on 22/Apr/06
FYI Tony Curtis is or was 5'9".
talker says on 22/Apr/06
Burt looked more like 5'11" than anything else.Check him out next to 5'8"Tony Curtis in "trapeze",or next to Kirk Douglas in "OK corral".He never looks more than 3" taller than either of them.If he had to wear lifts it was probably next to Gary Cooper. In "the swimmer"he is barefoot the entire movie and most people tower over him.

Only Bush's hairdresser knows for sure.

Do they know where all the WMD's are hidden?
Frank2 says on 2/Mar/06
I met Burt and he was six foot one. His biography always lists him as six two. And in the film From Here to Eternity he's taller than five foot ten Montgomery Clift, six foot tall Mickey Shaughnessy, six foot tall John Dennis, five foot ten Jack Warden, five foot seven Frank Sinatra and five foot ten Ernest Borgnine. So there!
Jeff says on 23/Feb/06
Just watched The Professionals on TMC this evening. He is shown barefoot walking beside 6'3" Lee Marvin and there appears to be about 3 inches of differences. Marvin was wearing shoes, so 6'1" seems about right for Burt in 1967. In The Birdman of Alcatraz he is right beside 6'0.5" Karl Malden in several scenes. Burt looked about 1 cm taller.
