Wooah! Heightcritique's pics do the trick. Don looks like a pudgy dwarf next to his wife. He can't be more than 5'8". He's also depressingly weighty, though the hair is intact. Age takes its toll but you'd think he'd keep trimmer.

I remember the photo of Glenn (young) with DJ and melanie. Dj looked 4 inches higher than glenn. Now we know as I suspected than glenn is under 5.7 (and not 5.8 cf Rob Paul listed in this site) may be 5.6 or less at that time. So 5.8 for Don with 2 inches lifts (at less) equal 5.10. Even if you are arguing a 5'9" Johnson which I believe is the case, you are debunking your own Costner picture.
FYI: Someone in this website posted a comment also that Don's slippers had special lifts in them to make him look taller.

Don Johnson is not 5'8". I've seen him several times in golf shoes, which don't mix with lifts. The lowest I'd go is 5'9" and that was when I saw him around 5 years ago. When I saw him back in the late 1980s, he struck me as a roughly 5'10" guy though he could have been a bit shorter given his hair style. In the pic next to Costner where Costner's wearing the terrible two-tone shoes, Kev is slouching and looking a bit fed up (maybe thinking about Waterworld) whereas Don is as ever bolt upright. I know several people in the industry who worked with him and all of them say the same thing: 5'8". He has short legs and that is why his pants are hemmed long to cover the ankle and to hide the heel and lifts inside his customed-made elevator shoes. I have seen pictures of him with his new wife wearing sandals next to each other which portray a 5'6" to 5'7" woman and a Don Johnson about half an inch to an inch taller than her. I agree completely with you castillo. Don has a good look on camera despite he is a short man. It's not a problem. He is very well proportionate with high shoulders. In casting, he is always starring with small actors (Sheena Easton, JE Olmos, Phil collins, Cheech Marin and a very short actor in the oil station in the hot spot). I haven't met Don but I've been watching a few episodes of Vice and there are just too many male actors towering over him and too many women roughly the same height or even taller for Don to be more than 5'9". It was filmed in the mid-80s when 30+ men much over 6' were still quite rare but he is dwarfed in episode after episode. Given the producers' natural wish to make Don seem tall and the much-remarked-on prevalence of lifts in showbiz, I'll go with the people who say he was under 5'9". Just watch the show. Let's not forget other short celebrities such as Tom Cruise, Woody Allen, Michael J Fox, etc, who have accomplish success as actors despite their short physical stature. Let's not forget also that in essense Hollywood is a make believe world which is closer to fantasy and idealism than actual reality, where a man can be made to appear taller using the tools of the trade. In the case of DJ, he should be proud of his success as an actor despite his short stature. There is no correlation between height and being a good actor or a success in Hollywood so there is highly a need to lie about his height. All Hollywood insiders know that shoes are specially made for stars so they can appear taller to their fans. It is a way to keep audiences interested and a subtle attempt to make fans idealize their idols. Take off the boots with the lifts and you get a man similar in height as young Glenn. Don was also young in this picture so add that to the equation (he is arount 60 now) and what remains is a 5'7" tall man. I personally have stood next to Don when he was wearing sandals and I can guaranty that the man is not taller than 5'8" with normal shoes on. He is a short man in height. I just saw a chapter of "Miami Vice" and there is no way DJ is shorter than the height listed here. In that episode there was John Turturro as a mafia boss ,and the guy is 6.1 ,at one point Sonny goes to a party organized by turturro and as soon as he enters the room ,they stood next to each other ,there is only and inch and a half or two inches in height difference at best and Turturro doesnt tower over DJ ,and in Vice he is wearing shoes with no heels so no way he is 5.7. OK, I like DJ so much, he is a great actor for me. I saw again the episode with Phil collins in vice. Collins is about 1 inch shorter than Moreno (Isy), the twice with zero heels shoes. In the same episode we can see that DJ is maximum an inch greater than Moreno. Finally , we know that Phil is short, max 168 cm (5.6). If it's exact, we have Moreno 5.7(170 cm) and DJ 172 cm (5.8 max). In the episode with Bruce willis DJ is about 3 inches less than Willis. If Willis is 180 cm, DJ is 173 cm max. Ok, it 's possible that DJ wore no lifts shoes in vice (at least in views where we can see the shoes). Shena easton is wearing some lifts (perhaps two inches, so 159 cm at maximum). DJ has 1 inch lift with flat shoes so 178 cm in the hypothese of 176 cm. The difference in the couple will be something as 20 cm and it is not the case. If DJ is a tall man,all the characters in vice did'nt need to be small size actors (shena Easton, EJO, Laura Santiago and so one). I wonder wether PM Thomas is really 5.10. In the casting of miami vice, shena Easton was choosen (154 cm)to be the crockett's wife with a normal difference in height for the couple. In one photo, Johnson stands next to 5'11"-ish former Starsky and Hutch actor Paul Michael Glaser, when he directed an episode of Miami Vice in the 1980's. The angle is a bit off, but Glaser has at least an inch on Johnson, if not more. Then pictures with his former wife, the 5'8"-ish Melanie Griffith. In regards to the photos of Don with Mick's ex, if you look at the elevator shoes website, most shoes will make you 3.5" taller in height. The trick is to wear pants with long hems so they will cover the unusual shape of the shoe in the back part or where the lift is placed. Vandal, Johnson looked short to me in "Guilty as Sin." Watch the movie again and pay attention to the heights of the extras and other actors and you'll see that Johnson is not taller than 5'8". A couple of years ago, Planet Hollywood restaurant in LA had several stars appeared together for their annyversay, and Don and Stallone was among them. Side by side Stallone was taller than Johnson so if Stallone is 5'9", Don is 5'8". Shoes with lifts make you at least 3" tall minimum, so if Don is 5'11" with lifts, his real height is 5'8". I have never seen shoes with lifts advertised for less than 3" inches height increase (I suppose is more for Hollywood stars since they are use custom made shoes with lifts), so use your intelligence and deduction...5'8" end of story.

Mr A, Last time I saw Johnson was about seven years ago, and he was 5'8". I don't think he shrinked to 5'5" in seven years. Is that possible? My Grandfather was 6'2" in his prime, and in his 90's he had lost 3 inches. Last time we measured him before he past away last year, he was 5'11". For those who still insist that Don Johnson is 5'10" I'd like to remind everyone that when he starred in the mediocre TV version of The Long Hot Summer he and Jason Robards were the same height. I would say the vast majority of NBA players are measured with shoes. They also round up. Apparently they do have the option of having their without shoes height as their listed one, but evidently few exercise it. I saw the Kung fu episode , at times he looked a lot shorter than 5 10 ,
next to D. Carradine he looked 5 7 , there`s a shot almost naked, shooting his entire body, his head was very big for his body ( which means he is not tall )
he was very skinny then, different eyebrows and slightly different nose.
In Miami Vice they cared a lot about it, but I recently saw an episode from season 4 ´Missing Hours` , he stands next to Eduard James Olmos, almost eye to eye ( u barely find this angle throughout the vice ) and we all know EduardJO is not tall at all.

In the recently-released DVD, "Kung Fu: The Complete Second Season," there's an episode called "The Spirit-Helper" in which a 23-year-old Don Johnson guest stars as (of all things) a Native American. Although Johnson wears what appear to be thin-soled moccasins throughout most of the episode, he still looks about four inches shorter than the always-barefooted David Carradine, whom everyone seems to agree was never taller than 6'1" even in his prime. I saw Don in San Francisco when he was shooting Nash Bridges. He walked past me to go to his limo, and he was wearing a pair of suede boots with about a 2 inch heel. I too was surprised as I was lookin for this 5'11" guy. My eyewitness account: 5'9"! As for the Stone Cold Steve Austin pic, Stone Cold is probably about 6', not 6'2", and they always managed to use special camera angles to hide the height disparity. |
