Not doing too badly next to Gary Cooper

Later on maybe some height loss had creeped in or Hemingway just developed bad posture

6ft0¼(183.5cm) prime I think is arguable for Hemingway (especially if Gary was a little over 6ft3) and maybe down to 5ft11½-5ft11¾ zone in later years. Remember a genuine 6ft back then was strikingly tall, kind of like what 6ft2-3 is today.

How tall you think Charles Bukowski was?
Editor Rob
I'm not familiar with him unfortunately.

This might be the place to recommend a page for Aldous Huxley, who was six foot four and half. Or Thomas Wolfe, who was six foot seven.

The Hemingway page also suggests that Rob could have a special section for alcoholics, who are well represented among the famous.

@Slim it’s the kind of mentality that keeps me going in lockdown.

I know right! 👍

I would even argue 183.5cm

He was a writer so who cares how tall Hemingway was? Actually a lot of people, because he revelled in celebrity, and publicized his personal life, and made a big deal about what a tough, masculine guy he was. If he had been short and thin, he wouldn't have had as much appeal, and I'll bet a lot people have read his books for the first time because of his charisma as a man. Although is books really are pretty good. Not as good as Mickey Spillane's, mind you, but pretty good all the same. (Sentence immediately preceding is meant as a joke. Laugh here.)

Notice that nobody cares how tall F. Scott Fitzgerald was, or Raymond Chandler or Somerset Maugham.

Easily solid 6'0" (183 cm) guy in prime. Enlistment paper at 40 said he was 6'0" In his 50's he looks like he could possibly dip below 6'0" (maybe around 182 cm or 5'11" 3/4).

I've seen more photos of him recently and I don't think he was much above 6'0, if at all. He looks like a 183cm man.

How tall was Aleister Crowley? Hemingway described him as a "a tall, gray, lantern-jawed man". If he said so, maybe Crowley was taller than him. Crowley seemed a pretty tall fellow, like 1.90 m: Click Here

I'm unfortunately not so familiar with Crowley, though over 6ft seems possible.

In this photo he could certainly pass for 220lbs.

From middle age onwards he was clearly at least 200lbs. As a young man, perusing various photographs of him from that time, he looked well-below that figure.

As tall-looking a six-footer as you are going to get. He would put many supposed six-footers to shame. He could easily be 6'0⅛, using the new listing system, or perhaps even 6'0¼.

220lbs looks extreme

A very solid 6fter, wouldn't rule out a fraction over this.

Hemingway was good friends with Gary Cooper. There are many pics of both men together and Cooper looks around 7-8 cms taller. So, 1`83 for Hemingway seems accurate

I don't know here's Hemingway with 6'1" listed John Huston, who was only 6 years younger, but to be fair I think Huston was at least 6'1.5".
