What would you say was his peak height and his last height?
Editor Rob: I don't think he dropped anything huge, an inch maybe, but not more.
Arch Stanton said on 28/Aug/15
What's amusing is that in his earlier recordings in the forties he sounded more refined, like he was trying to emulate Bing Crosby. But by the mid 50s he started to sound more brash (and natural).
Arch Stanton said on 28/Aug/15
OK he was never the greatest of singers and was overrated musically but the 1978 Caesar's Palace performance I've seen he was still rather good I thought.
littlesue said on 25/Aug/15
Saw Sinatra in 1980 at the Royal Albert Hall, he was as bad as a pub singer by this time but still held the audience in his hand due to his auroa as a star
Arch Stanton said on 23/Aug/15
You can't blame him for the massive ego though, two enormously successful careers, respect from even the baddest mafia members and married to Ava Gardner at her most beautiful in the 50s. I think Sinatra would argue that you can make your own luck with the right attitude.
Arch Stanton said on 23/Aug/15
@Mande Until you see him barefoot with Bob Mitchum in Not as a Stranger and barely looked over the 5 ft 7 mark. Yes, he can consistently look easily 5 ft 8 on screen. He could certainly look 172 at times. I think this is OK.

I can't stop listening to Sinatra's live concerts Sam, he was an awesome entertainer and really a funny guy, but yeah you can tell he'd be an insufferable a-hole to be around for too long and I get the impression he'd be the type who when drunk can get particularly nasty and turn on you just like that. He did have the biggest ego in the world, but that got him to the top.
mande2013 said on 21/Aug/15
I'm becoming more and more convinced everyday that Sinatra may have even been 5'7.75-5'8 range, maybe being a hair under the 5'8 mark at night in his prime. Look at the picture with Capra and Edward G. Robinson.
Sam said on 17/Aug/15
Yeah, he has Bob Dylan's fibbing beat by half an inch...Sinatra strikes as enjoyable as a audience member but would have insufferable to be around in person due to his Godzilla-sized ego, somewhat unstandable as he came from quite little and became a giant in two fields of entertainment.
Brad said on 14/Aug/15
His '82 concert program has him listed as 5' 11". He takes the height fibbing crown.
chenz55 said on 4/Aug/15
Sinatra was a little over 5'6" met him at the Westchester premier theater in new York Westchester county........
Arch Stanton said on 11/Apr/15
Yeah Deano is hard to nail down. If you watch Artists and Models I think it was there's a barefoot scene, he's in flip flops and the actress can't remember if it was Shirley MacClaine or Dorothy Malone barefoot and briefly you can see he wasn't much taller! was very difficult to see over 5'9 there. Generally though I think he could pull off looking about 5 ft 10 and near 6 ft in the lifts.
Steve said on 9/Apr/15
Yep. Crosby was an hibitual lift wearer. He must have been sensitive about his height.

As for Dean, I always wondered why a semi-tall actor would wear lifts. Then I watched the time he appeared on The Tonight Show. Carson was taller than him by at least an inch. Dean must have left his lifts at home that night.

Perhaps Dean was around 5'9". With lifts he could hit slightly over 5'11".
Arch Stanton said on 7/Apr/15
Steve, have you noticed that in every film Bing Crosby wears his highbacks like clockwork?
Arch Stanton said on 7/Apr/15
Yes, unlike Dean Martin and Bing Crosby!
Steve said on 7/Apr/15
Sinatra rarely wore lifts. I think he couldn't care less he was short. Total opposite of say Stallone or Tom Cruise.
Mc51295 said on 31/Mar/15
5'7.5 in the morning, 5'7 at night. Seemed typical for that time.
Danimal said on 30/Mar/15
Was supposedly measured by the ARMY at 169cm, which comes out to 5'6.5". Seems about right to me.
Steve said on 22/Feb/15
Sinatra was delivered using forceps. It tore off one ear lobe and scarred the side of his face.
Arch Stanton said on 21/Feb/15
His footwear looks sus in The Joker is Wild. There's a scene in which he's lying on the bed and is looks like Cuban heels with a bit of an added lift inside judging by the angle. Not often I see him in shoes like that.

Just read that Sinatra was scarred at birth. I think you can see the scar on the side of his face. I knew he sort of looked a bit pock marked but didn't quite realise it was a scar.
Arch Stanton said on 4/Jan/15
Well he looked about 1.5 inches taller than Doris Day in Young at Heart. Didn't look like he was wearing lifts either. And a lot of people will claim Doris was at least 5 ft 7. I think he generally looked weak 5 ft 8 rather than 5'7".
Robby D said on 8/Dec/14
I watched a rerun of "From Here To Eternity" yesterday and Sinatra looked barely 5'7" I doubt he was 5'7 1/2" barefoot.
Arch Stanton said on 1/Dec/14
Nah, there's a scene in which Sinatra and Mitchum are barefoot and face to face and Sinatra is almost 6 inches shorter. About 5.5 inches as listed here.
Arch Stanton said on 1/Dec/14
Looked a whisker under 5 ft 8 next to Mitchum in Not as a Stranger. 172cm is quite possible.
Arch Stanton said on 21/Nov/14
Rubbish Judd. In The Tender Trap Sinatra is in his socks and 5'7" listed David Wayne in sandals and Sinatra looked easily an inch taller. I suspect Wayne was more 5'6" range but he didn't look under this.
Judd said on 31/Oct/14
5'6.5" was spot on

That's one of the scenes with Sinatra and Blocker. Blocker looked easily 6 ft 5 actually next to him in that scene although Sinatra wasn't stood as straight as possible at times.
Sam said on 12/Aug/14
Yeah Blocker was a huge monster of a guy, his chest and arms look totally massive.
Arch Stanton said on 12/Aug/14
You could tell in a way that Crosby loathed Sinatra even in the film!!
Arch Stanton said on 11/Aug/14
Dan Blocker was a huge guy, easily 6 ft 4 and 300 pounds!
Arch Stanton said on 11/Aug/14
Yeha in some films he really did pull off looking a solid 5'9 er. He was definitely wearing lifts in Some Came Running, but in quite a few films his footwear looks pretty normal. If he was wearing customs they were fairly moderate and very well disguised. Bing Crosby though every single movie of his I've seen he's wearing the high backs and stood with Stallone like posture when stood up close to other actors!!
Sam said on 11/Aug/14
Dan Blocker looks to me like the actor who played the self-titled "Yellow King" on True Detective...the climatic fight would have been more effective if he was actually as massive as Blocker.

Anyway, I did get the sense in some films that Sinatra's wearing lifts just not in High Society, whereas Bing Crosby clearly was. IMO, Sinatra and Crosby in that made me miss Grant and Stewart quite a bit, both were natural performers but were far outclassed in charisma, acting ability and comic timing in those roles by the guys in The Philadelphia Story, Grace Kelly was the only one I thought fit well although I still wouldn't place her above Hepburn.
Arch Stanton said on 9/Aug/14
In Tony Rome and Lady in Cement at times he could honestly look 5'9 range. It was only when he stood right up close with huge 6'4-6'5" 300 pound Dan Blocker you could see he was about this. Blocker dwarfed him!
Arch Stanton said on 17/Jun/14
Rob can you add a photo?
Arch Stanton said on 12/Jun/14
Thanks for that. Seen all of the film mentioned. Wasn't too keen on Some Came Running though. I don't think he really did romantic leading man roles very well, he came across as a bit creepy and forceful I thought in such roles.
Arch Stanton said on 11/Jun/14
Rob can you update this with American singer and actor, best remembered for songs like "My Way", Come Fly With me" and "Fly Me To Moon" and for roles in films like Ocean's 11, The Manchurian Candidate, From Here to Eternity, Guys and Dolls, High Society, On the Town, Suddenly, The Detective and Von Ryan's Express.
Arch Stanton said on 10/Jun/14
Yeah he's definitely wearing lifts in Some Came Running. in one scene he walks out the villa and as he walks his trousers legs come up and you can see the high back on them and the popping out look. Must have been Martin's influence rubbing off on him!
Arch Stanton said on 10/Jun/14
He looks 5'7" range next to 5'10 Arthur Kennedy though and his shoes looks suspiciously clumpy. I don't often get the impression he's wearing lifts, unlike Bing Crosby and Dean Martin!
Arch Stanton said on 10/Jun/14
Must have been in lifts in Some Came Running as he looks 1.5 inches taller than Shirley MacLaine!
Sam said on 24/Mar/14
What about Paul Anka then?
Can you see him as a strong 5'5, Rob?
Jeff C said on 29/Jan/14
Although known more for his baritone voice, Sinatra was a hell of an actor. My favorites are The Manchurian Candidate, Suddenly, both taking out of ciculation after the assasination of JFK and From Here to Eternity. As for his peak height, I think this is a pretty good listing.
Mr. Kaplan said on 19/Jan/14
Posted this before, but the army measured him at 169 cm.
[Editor Rob: what is the reference for this, it would be of great use to discover it! I have a quote from a biographer I'm going to add about his height...]
Arch Stanton said on 6/Jan/14
Robby D, you also say Sinatra was the same height as Gene Kelly, but in On The Town I think when level he looks a bit taller. He was also only about an inch shorter than Brando. I can't see him under this.
Robby D said on 28/Dec/13
I saw the movie "Oceans Eleven" last week and Frank Sinatra was standing eye to eye with Angie Dickenson who is listed as 5'5" in height and she looked a tad taller than him. Granted she was wearing heels but they were not very high and Sinatra was wearing dress shoes with a heel of about an inch. On that basis I would say he was 5'7" maximum.
Arch Stanton said on 26/Dec/13
Looks at least this next a heeled Grace Kelly in High Society, his footwear looks normal, unlike Bing's...
Arch Stanton said on 24/Dec/13
Who was the super short guy in Guys and Dolls? I'd guess he was 5 ft flat tops. Sinatra looked about 8 inches taller!!
Arch Stanton said on 24/Dec/13
Spot on. Barely an inch taller than Brando in Guys and Dolls who was around 174cm I think.
Greg said on 24/Sep/13
Would have placed him around 5'8" - actually no shorter than that. There's a very good image on the Laurence Harvey W iki pedia page that shows both in long shot (can't link to it because it apparently is identified as s pam on this website)
but Sinatra kinda looks around 5/8" next to 6'1" Harvey.
Arch Stanton said on 14/Sep/13
I looked at his footwear in his earlier films and they didn't look suspicious. H was extremely thin in the 40s and 50s like 120 pounds max. In the Manchurian Candidate he looks about 20 pounds heavier and more a decent sort of weight. He had such a tremendous aura about him which is extremely rare. It's in his eyes, he was one guy in a million for sure.
Brad said on 8/Aug/13
As listed. Built up footwear the norm.
Ian C. said on 28/Jul/13
I recall a biography of Sinatra that reprinted his U.S. Army draftboard assessment, in which he was listed at 5 foot 7.
Sam said on 16/Jul/13
Looked around as listed next to 6'1" Cary Grant:

Frank Sinatra was around 5ft 7 - 5ft 8. But he was never called Frank's 5ft 9in ever. Though I don't think he was even measured. He has been said to be just at 5'7 1/2" tall, IMO. He is a rather small guy, enough said.
Rob Bryant said on 3/Feb/13
I saw Frank at the Ali / Norton rematch at the Forum in the early 70's. 5'-7" would be a good estimate of his height. I have to say he was honest. Check it out all of these short actors that were Frank's height or shorter have themselves listed at 5'-9".
Will said on 29/Jan/13
Frank Sinatra was short. So stating his height as 5ft 7 would be called appropriate. 'Cause 5ft 7 is short.
toby said on 27/Dec/12
5'7 , 120 pounds. Tiny man with a big voice
Matt said on 11/Nov/12
Always seemed a tad bit shorter than Gene Kelly in Anchors Aweigh. BUT sometimes they evened up in height...I guess because Sinatra had a smaller frame...Hm..might have to watch that movie again.

Lancaster was 6'1", Clift, 5'10", Borgnine, 5'10"-5'11". Sinatra was 5'7" and his thin build made him look even smaller.
Anthony said on 12/Oct/07
Actually, the book said 5'7.
GeneP said on 12/Oct/07
In his book 'Mr. S' George Jacobs, Sinatra's 1960s valet, said he wore lifts but was 5'8" barefoot.
Anthony said on 24/Jul/07
Yes,I loved him since I was a kid. I always knew he was short.
glenn said on 23/Jul/07
favorite artist ever? he seemed 5-7 to me whenever i saw him.
Anthony said on 23/Jul/07
In the book "Mr. S", Frank's servant of 15 years, George Jacobs, says Frank was 5'7 and had a closet full of elevator shoes.
Anthony said on 26/May/07
Sinatra's y favorite artist ever I'd say 5'7.5 lookes righht. Frank was skinny when he was younger (he often joked about it, once qupping in one of his tv specials that he weighed less than Tommy Dorsey's trombone), and he also had good lifts, so he often can give a tall impression in photos when he was alone. His height didn't become apparent untiil he was neext o guys who were either not much shorter than him or a lot taller than him (JFK beats him by 5 inches in every photo I've seen of them). Who cares, thouhgh? He was the best.
Max said on 25/Feb/07
We have a couple shorter fellows at work, the have stated on a few occasions that 6' would be their desired height. At 6'5" barefoot and 300 lbs with a weightlifting background I can related from the other side. There are times when I feel too big however, they don't make reverse lifts .
TeritoneC said on 17/Jan/07
Concerning Tiger's previous statement about 6' being the desired height for men who are under '6: I myself am 5'7", and would feel completely fine at only achieving a height of 5'10". I really have no desire for those extra two inches. Just from the perspective of one who has to live with such things :-)
MHouillon said on 14/Dec/06
I think, he was not shorter than Tom Cruise is. Cruise is 172cm on this site (Cruise is a proper 170cm), Frankie is a 172cm also.
MHouillon said on 26/Oct/06
Thanks, Vivian. That's what I'm saying ! Frank Sinatra was 172cm (5'7.5"). Rob, why don't you downgrade him a bit ?
Regus said on 30/Sep/06
Mathis was a surprise, but shouldn't have been considering. Great voice as it is.
Brad said on 4/Sep/06
100% correct. My father would take the elevated from Woodlawn to see him at The Paramount. He was a short skinny guy.
Vivian said on 30/Aug/06
First off, let's set the record straight. Old Blue Eyes was 5 foot 7 and a half. I would know because I'm his biggest fan. He was about to enter the army, and they measured him. And we all know that measuring tapes don't lie.

Frank2 said on 9/Aug/06
Deborah Kerr was no more 5'7" than Sinatra was 5'8". Kerr was about 5'5". Celebs are such BS'er's.
Brad said on 9/Aug/06
5' 7" and a skinny guy. He shoulda ate where Jimmy Roselli ate in the neighborhood. Now Roselli could sing! My-lone!!!
Rut said on 29/Jul/06
Oke, first of all, Sinatra wasn't 5 ft 7, total bullshit, 174 barefoot is likely possible..
Here's an interesting quote out of a book by Deborah Kerr (not more than five seven barefoot herself): I'm very tall you see, and both Frank and Dino(are) very short. They called me the "Jolly green giant".
frank p said on 28/Jul/06
These comments are actually refeshing to me. I met a woman last year who actually grew up in the tenement next to Sinatra in New Jersey. She is 79 today and very alert. According to her, Sinatra and she were the same height. She is 5"7. I know there are vaiables, BUT, I think that sounds reasonable to me.
Glenn said on 19/Jun/06
I met him plenty of times.5-6 with a slouch.5-8 in his youth?
leonari said on 16/Jun/06
NOBODY by seeing Wilhelm Defoe on TV would think he is 5'6 or 5'7" and there is enough eveidence here on ROB site that more or less proves he is in the 5'6" department. Defoe same as Sinatra has a very thin frame, like Sinatra wears lifts and most importantly: GOOD proportions. Another thing almost nobody on this site ever mentions. A well proportioned person by standing alone in a pic can look tall even at 5'6"...PROPORTIONS!! Look at Robbie Williams: He has very bad proportions. Short legs long very wide upper body. The guy never looks 6 feet! BUT HE IS!!
leonari said on 16/Jun/06
I have to say that most guys on this site don't understand HOLLYWOOD. It's world of illusions. Not only in the movies. YES I belive Frank2: Lifts are a very common practice for the stars on the shorter side of things. 90 % on this site have fallen exctly what the big screen and TV creates: the illusion of larger than life. Sinatra can't be 5'7"...He was a superstar!! A Superstar can't be that short. BULLSHIT. Thats what I say: BULL!Wake up people!! Frank Sinatra was short. He wore bad lifts, even in his movies, but in his heyday he had a very skinny frame which makes you appear taller on screen especially if you wear 2 inch lifts...
Frank2 said on 27/Apr/06
So? Go with what you believe to be true and I'll go with what I know to be true.
Frank2 said on 26/Apr/06
Frank was exactly the same height as Gene Kelly and David Wayne. I met them all and they were all 5'7".
D. Ray Morton said on 9/Apr/06
Thanks for the links, Frank2. Great photos.

I met Buddy in '82 and again in '86. My impression was shortish guy (5'6" tops), monster presence. He might've been 5'7" back in the Dorsey days.
D. Ray Morton said on 7/Apr/06
I didn't know da guy, but I'd have to guess 5'7". He was fractionally taller than Buddy Rich and Buddy was 5'6".
Frank2 said on 20/Mar/06
Frank would have been exactly seven inches shorter than 6'1" Mitchum since Ol' Blue Eyes was 5'7". And back then Frank only eighed about 135 lbs. while Mitchum tipped the scales at 200 lbs. What I'd love to see is a photo of Mitchum standing next to supposedly 6' Dean Martin with Dino not wearing lifts. Then you'd see than Martin was about 5'10" as I've repeatedly stated.
larry said on 20/Mar/06
Look at Sinatra beside Robert Michum in NOT AS A STRANGER; he looks 5-6 inches and 70-80 pounds less in that picture. He looked a good 3" shorter than Dean Martin in several movies. But Mr. Martin (whose singing I also LOVE) never looked 6' to me - more like 5'10" or 5'10.5". JMHO.
Paul said on 3/Mar/06
There is a fairly well known poster of Frank's mugshot with an accompanying arrest record. He is listed at 5'8" in this report which pre-dated his fame (the arrest happened in the late 1930s).

He could have been 5'7" in his AARP years.
Frank2 said on 2/Mar/06
Frank was five seven, period. Look, I see now that unless you see it officially in writing you don't believe it.
Frank2 said on 2/Mar/06
OK Frank was six four and wore special shoes to make himself look shorter. Happy?
Frank2 said on 2/Mar/06
No joke. I worked in the biz for nearly forty years and met or knew many celebs listed on this forum. Frank wore lifts. So did Dean Martin. So did many under five foot ten actors. Dean was 5'10" but wanted to look six feet. Frank wanted to look five feet ten.
TJ said on 1/Mar/06
If Sinatra was 5'7, that makes Cruise very short as Sinatra was noticeably taller than him in the pic of them from the 80s - when Sinatra was an old man.
Frank2 said on 28/Feb/06
Sinatra had the best lifts in the biz. He was about 5'7" without them. And remember that in the films he appeared in with Dean Martin that Dino also wore lifts. I think they both bought them from the same custom shoemaker.
