How tall was Frank Sinatra

Frank Sinatra's Height

5ft 7 ½ (171.5 cm)

American Singer and Actor, best remembered for songs like "My Way", Come Fly With me" and "Fly Me To Moon" and for roles in films such as Ocean's 11, The Manchurian Candidate, From Here to Eternity, Guys and Dolls, High Society, On the Town, Suddenly, The Detective and Von Ryan's Express. According to his servant, Frank wore elevator shoes regularly.

Frank Sinatra as Tony Rome (alt)

In a biography, an author mentioned: "Frank Sinatra stood five feet seven and a half inches tall. This was his full adult stature; he would never grow even a quarter inch more, though in later years he would give his height variously as five nine, five ten, even five eleven - the maximum he could stretch the truth without pretending to a patently absurd six feet. In later years, he wore lifts in his shoes that got him up to five nine or so."

Got a good look at him with Cary Grant in The Pride and the Passion and I would say he looked no less than this and a weak 5 ft 8, though not entirely convinced Cary Grant was a full 6 ft 1 by that period. "Grant"ed he could look it in his 30s and 40s films.

Indeed Leighton, in the film "Double Dynamite" Sinatra is even described as "brown hair, blue eyes, 5ft 10 wearing elevator shoes"!! Looks like it was an in joke by the film makers.
Leighton Tang said on 5/Aug/22
@Meltdown

I mean, he was a fond wearer of elevator shoes, which boosted his height by 4 inches. So assuming he was 5'6, he would have been 5'10 in elevators, so claiming that height was technically not out of reach for him.

Imagine being 5ft 7.5 in your prime, reaching 5ft 6.5 by your late 50s, and now being 66 years old, clearly under 5ft 6, and claiming 5ft 10. The man had no shame.

Dean was never a real 5 ft 11 though, as he would have looked at least 6'1 in his lifts. He could look about 6 ft in his "footwear". I previously said I didn't see Sinatra wear suspicious shoes until later in his career, but I found this from 1958 Click Here look at the heel and ankle

The Stallone of the 50 lol with the height claims. His ex girlfriends even stated he used lifts in the shoes. Always wanted to be a tall guy. 5-7.5 imo.

According to a mumber of reputable sources on great Italian American singers, Dean was 5-11.....Vic Damone was 5-10, Frankie Laine was 5'11, Bobby Darin was 5-8, Sinatra was 5-7.5, Buddy Greco was 5-9, Tony Bennet is 5-7, Perry Como, Al Martino and Jerry Vale were 5-6 or under.
Arch Stanton said on 22/Jan/22
LOL he claimed 5 ft 10. Makes sense, Dean Martin was 6'1! :-) I saw a video of him performing live in Vegas from the 70s a week ago and at the beginning he looks in a mirror about 4 times within a few minutes before going out on stage. Like it was an OCD habit like showering 12 times a day. I didn't realise he was as vain and insecure as that! I noticed it more in his older years that his footwear looked sus, I didn't notice it in his films.

Sinatra was still extremely thin in Suddenly too, in his late 30s. I could believe as low as a 26 waist as a young man. No chance he was even close to 10 stone any time before his 40s. 171 cm is possible.

Never be deceived by Bing Crosby Ian, he was the Stallone of his generation. I think in reality they were about the same height. Esther Williams's comment is interesting though, I can't see Sinatra or Kelly under 5 ft 7. I think Gene Kelly was a fraction shorter than Frank.

Ian Vector said on 13/May/21
5’ 7.5” is an incredibly generous claim. In the movie “Robin & The 7 Hoods”, Sinatra is shorter in heels than Bing Crosby, who is no taller than 5’ 7”. I’d say 5’ 6” would be a more appropriate estimate for Sinatra. And there’s no way he was 5’ 10” or 5’ 11” like he claimed.
KH said on 5/Feb/21
5'7 at best if you watch his movies. He looks the same size as most of his female costars in heels and I have no reason to believe they were taller then average. Also, 136lb good lord. I was 5'7 when I was 14 before my last growth spurt and thin but I guess I had more muscle then I thought because I weighed about 144 lbs those days. @ Rob, you might want to add the Ava Gardner quote "Well, there’s only 10 pounds of Frank but there’s 110 pounds of c**k.". So she's saying he was 120 pounds. And that was around 1950. I bet in the late 30s and early 40s he was nearer 110 pounds. "So skinny my eyes are single file" as he'd say.

Now that I know that Sinatra was short, I'll watch a half hours or so of every Sinatra movie that happens to be on Turner Classic Movies when I'm flipping channels. I just saw a clip from Some Came Running, where Sinatra stands with Dean Martin, who was probably five foot ten. In that scene, Sinatra seems to be about an inch shorter than Martin. Hmm. When Sinatra walks out of the scene, you get a quick look at his feet and, sure enough, he was wearing built up shoes.
Ian C. said on 16/Oct/18
I've just watched about forty minutes of Pal Joey, and Sinatra stands up straight in the foreground on level ground with only one male actor (who is about an inch taller.) He stands on a level floor with Rita Hayworth, who seems to be the same height, except that, suspiciously, she is wearing a long gown that covers her feet. Which suggests that she was probably barefoot.

And Sinatra was thin. This was a little guy, pure and simple.
NorahHoorah said on 11/Oct/18
Rob, how many inches you think did he lose by the time of his death in 1998?
Editor Rob
I don't think an extraordinary amount, near an inch.
IRememberWhenRockWasYoung said on 6/Sep/18
Frank Sinatra had a very small frame and a small head as well. In his old films you can see how some of the female actors had a bigger head than Frank. Would have guessed no more than 5'7.
Ian C said on 3/Aug/18
Now that we know how short Frank was, it's fun to watch his movies and see all the tricks they used to make him seem taller. In Some Came Running he has a long scene with Arthur Kennedy, who was quite a bit taller. When Franks stands up, Kennedy immediately sits down, and vice versa. Or, if they are both standing, one or the other is much closer to the camera.

He was Frank Sinatra, he can claim any height he wanted to! Sorry, but Frank wasn't a genius, he was just exceptionally attuned to the art of living and wise to the world with a good ear and singing voice who used his natural charisma and confidence to propel him into stardom. He made his own luck I think through his huge drive and inner belief. A genius at self confidence and belief perhaps!

A 5'7.5" guy claiming 5'11"? How’d he think he was going to get away with that!?
Ian C. said on 12/Feb/18
Okay, Sinatra wore lifts, but this is no more dishonourable for a movie leading man than wearing a hairpiece or a corset. It's a professional necessity. And Sinatra was a very good leading man, and a brilliant actor.

He was likely an authentic I.Q. genius, despite not having completed high school. (He was expelled for being "rowdy.") Watch him in The Manchurian Candidate, and he is capable of word and note perfect acting for several minutes without a camera blink, moving around and delivering complex dialogue with other actors. He habitually did this kind of thing in one take. Think of the concentration and memory you'd need to do that, in a room full of technicians and cameras and lights.

And he drank a lot. He was able to be both a compelling actor and an iconic recording artist while drinking prodigious amounts of alcohol for a man his size.

I would believe 120 pounds, which is just plain little. Despite that handicap, he was known to punch people. He was brave as well as brilliant. A very gifted guy, who made the most of those gifts.

Short in the 30's? Wouldn't say so since the average male height in the 60's used to be a bit over 5ft 8. (Instead of going to Our World In Data, check some actual reports of the time.)

Average Height today -- 5'9.5" to 5'10.5"; back then, however, it was different. I'd say he was bang on average by the time he shifted into adulthood. Also, would believe he scraped the 5'8" mark right out of bed throughout the larger part of his younger years (post attaining full stature that is).
Arch Stanton said on 8/Nov/16
Yeah Anka might have been 5 ft 4 and change.

What amazes me about Sinatra is that he wasn't a big guy, thought of himself as small as he described himself as a "little guy" in one concert, was scarred and partly disfigured facially at birth, wasn't the most naturally gifted of singers or actors to be "frank", and was moody and downright rude at times, but we all perceive him as a world giant, larger than life itself. I think he's one of those people who demonstrate that you can really make your own luck if you roll with life and believe in yourself. Perhaps he had to get really famous to fill an inner inadequacy, but he sort of created his own world. It was that inner belief that he could be the best and constant drive.
Brad said on 5/Jul/16

Your old as Sinatra, you probably are close to dead, and closer to 6 foot now that your in your 70's. So go be an author and write more fiction since what you consist of pure fiction. By the way Sinatra is short, so arguing over couple inches is quite sad. Especially when you said you saw him in 1959, that made me laugh all day....
Arch Stanton said on 10/Jan/16
His footwear didn't look sus in High Society Sue, Bing Crosby on the other hand was wearing his usual highback customs and accounts for why he looked about 1.5 inches taller than Sinatra in the film. In reality, about the same height.
Arch Stanton said on 10/Jan/16
Amusing the lengths people will go to on here. Sinatra's parents were very short, though probably not too unusual for Italy at the time, his mother was in 4'11-5' range and his father looked no more than 5'3", though a boxer and quite tough looking like Frank was. Sinatra edged Gene Kelly who was around 5 ft 7, I have him at 5'7.25. Sinatra could look 5'7 flat with Mitchum barefoot but generally I think this is spot on.

You can't blame him for the massive ego though, two enormously successful careers, respect from even the baddest mafia members and married to Ava Gardner at her most beautiful in the 50s. I think Sinatra would argue that you can make your own luck with the right attitude.
Arch Stanton said on 23/Aug/15
@Mande Until you see him barefoot with Bob Mitchum in Not as a Stranger and barely looked over the 5 ft 7 mark. Yes, he can consistently look easily 5 ft 8 on screen. He could certainly look 172 at times. I think this is OK.

I can't stop listening to Sinatra's live concerts Sam, he was an awesome entertainer and really a funny guy, but yeah you can tell he'd be an insufferable a-hole to be around for too long and I get the impression he'd be the type who when drunk can get particularly nasty and turn on you just like that. He did have the biggest ego in the world, but that got him to the top.

If you watch Artists and Models I think it was there's a barefoot scene, he's in flip flops and the actress can't remember if it was Shirley MacClaine or Dorothy Malone barefoot and briefly you can see he wasn't much taller! was very difficult to see over 5'9 there. Generally though I think he could pull off looking about 5 ft 10 and near 6 ft in the lifts.
Steve said on 9/Apr/15
Yep. Crosby was an hibitual lift wearer. He must have been sensitive about his height.

As for Dean, I always wondered why a semi-tall actor would wear lifts. Then I watched the time he appeared on The Tonight Show. Carson was taller than him by at least an inch. Dean must have left his lifts at home that night.

Perhaps Dean was around 5'9". With lifts he could hit slightly over 5'11".

Arch Stanton said on 11/Aug/14
Yeha in some films he really did pull off looking a solid 5'9 er. He was definitely wearing lifts in Some Came Running, but in quite a few films his footwear looks pretty normal. If he was wearing customs they were fairly moderate and very well disguised. Bing Crosby though every single movie of his I've seen he's wearing the high backs and stood with Stallone like posture when stood up close to other actors!!
Sam said on 11/Aug/14
Dan Blocker looks to me like the actor who played the self-titled "Yellow King" on True Detective...the climatic fight would have been more effective if he was actually as massive as Blocker.

Anyway, I did get the sense in some films that Sinatra's wearing lifts just not in High Society, whereas Bing Crosby clearly was. IMO, Sinatra and Crosby in that made me miss Grant and Stewart quite a bit, both were natural performers but were far outclassed in charisma, acting ability and comic timing in those roles by the guys in The Philadelphia Story, Grace Kelly was the only one I thought fit well although I still wouldn't place her above Hepburn.
Arch Stanton said on 9/Aug/14
In Tony Rome and Lady in Cement at times he could honestly look 5'9 range. It was only when he stood right up close with huge 6'4-6'5" 300 pound Dan Blocker you could see he was about this. Blocker dwarfed him!

Arch Stanton said on 10/Jun/14
Yeah he's definitely wearing lifts in Some Came Running. in one scene he walks out the villa and as he walks his trousers legs come up and you can see the high back on them and the popping out look. Must have been Martin's influence rubbing off on him!
Arch Stanton said on 10/Jun/14
He looks 5'7" range next to 5'10 Arthur Kennedy though and his shoes looks suspiciously clumpy. I don't often get the impression he's wearing lifts, unlike Bing Crosby and Dean Martin!
Arch Stanton said on 10/Jun/14
Must have been in lifts in Some Came Running as he looks 1.5 inches taller than Shirley MacLaine!

Although known more for his baritone voice, Sinatra was a hell of an actor. My favorites are The Manchurian Candidate, Suddenly, both taking out of ciculation after the assasination of JFK and From Here to Eternity. As for his peak height, I think this is a pretty good listing.
Mr. Kaplan said on 19/Jan/14

Editor Rob
what is the reference for this, it would be of great use to discover it! I have a quote from a biographer I'm going to add about his height...
Arch Stanton said on 6/Jan/14
Robby D, you also say Sinatra was the same height as Gene Kelly, but in On The Town I think when level he looks a bit taller. He was also only about an inch shorter than Brando. I can't see him under this.
Robby D said on 28/Dec/13
I saw the movie "Oceans Eleven" last week and Frank Sinatra was standing eye to eye with Angie Dickenson who is listed as 5'5" in height and she looked a tad taller than him. Granted she was wearing heels but they were not very high and Sinatra was wearing dress shoes with a heel of about an inch. On that basis I would say he was 5'7" maximum.
Arch Stanton said on 26/Dec/13
Looks at least this next a heeled Grace Kelly in High Society, his footwear looks normal, unlike Bing's...
Arch Stanton said on 24/Dec/13
Who was the super short guy in Guys and Dolls? I'd guess he was 5 ft flat tops. Sinatra looked about 8 inches taller!!
Arch Stanton said on 24/Dec/13
Spot on. Barely an inch taller than Brando in Guys and Dolls who was around 174cm I think.
Arch Stanton said on 14/Sep/13
I looked at his footwear in his earlier films and they didn't look suspicious. H was extremely thin in the 40s and 50s like 120 pounds max. In the Manchurian Candidate he looks about 20 pounds heavier and more a decent sort of weight. He had such a tremendous aura about him which is extremely rare. It's in his eyes, he was one guy in a million for sure.

guyfrommars said on 28/Jun/09
It seems Sinatra and Gene Kelly are listed the same height here. As I recall Sinatra looked a tad taller in the movie "On the Town", probably wore bigger lifts.
RisingForce said on 13/Jun/09
But usually only 6 footers seem to state they're shorter than they are. I don't think Ernest would seem too big at 5'10" or 5'11". And the quote was recent so I doubt he'd feel the need to downgrade himself for any particular reason at his age.

I find it extremely possible that he was 5'10" or 5'11", but if that's the case then I find it more likely that he didn't know his own height back then.
Brad said on 12/Jun/09
Sinatra was 5' 7". How tall was Mia? He owned her. True about Sinatra driving himself. He'd drive Nancy Jr. around in a Thunderbird from her high school by UCLA I've had people tell me who went there. Golf clubs thrown in the back seat.
Frank2 said on 12/Jun/09
Borgnine didn't wear lifts the night I was with him and his bride in Vegas. That I'm positive of.

I remember back when Lon Cheney Jr. stated that he was only 6' tall and that people overestimated his height. In reality, Cheney was closer to 6'2". I think he said that because he was finding it hard to find roles since most producers felt he was too big and imposing which he was. So he downgraded his height on purpose. Maybe Borgnine did the same thing. I do know that in JUBAL, he and 5'11" Glenn Ford look to be the same height. And back when Borgnine did McHale's Navy, TV Guide wrote that he was 6'.
RisingForce said on 12/Jun/09
Yeah I read Ernest's 5'9" claim in an article that had an excerpt from his book, but it sounds to me like he was referring to his height when he was starting out in Hollywood.

"So I'm sitting in my Beverly Hills home, the one I bought in 1965, watching the Golden Globes, looking at all the fresh young faces (to my eyes, sixty is fresh and young!), and thinking, If I were starting out today, what kind of parts would I be playing?

Frank2 said on 11/Jun/09
I saw Sinatra at some charity event in the very early 1970s. I said "hello" and he looked at me like he was thinking, "who in the hell are you?" And in the very early 1980s I saw him perform in concert at the Universal Amphitheater. In fact, I saw him twice over a period of a couple of years. And one time he pulled up right next to me while driving his Rolls Royce. I believe that was when I was driving to one of his concerts. I was surprised he was driving himself and not being chauffeured. And I do recollect seeing him one day at Warner Brothers, but that was from a distance. He was walking with some people. He appeared to be the shortest guy in the group.

When I saw him on stage in the early 1980s, I did notice he wore boots with huge heels.

As for Borgnine, I saw him interviewed somewhere, I believe TCM, and he said when he did FROM HERE TO ETERNITY, Sinatra was surprised that he was so much taller than him and said so.

Where did Borgnine claim he's 5'9"? In his book? Maybe he's now 5'9".
RisingForce said on 11/Jun/09
I actually watched it on TCM a few days ago as well. There are some scenes where the difference looks less between Clift and Sinatra. I also noticed that Clift's 5'10" claim looked a bit high. I'd guess he was more like 5'9".

Frank2, did you meet Sinatra? 5'7" sounds about right for him. I have to wonder though, if Borgnine was atleast 5'10" then why did he claim he was 5'9"?
Frank2 said on 11/Jun/09
"In From Here To Eternity he was only an inch or an inch and a half shorter than Montgomery Clift who is supposedly 5'10", even in full shots."

Nope. If anything, Clift looks to be a solid two to two and a half inches taller than Frank. I just watched that film when TCM ran it. Check it out with this section on youtube. Go to approximately 2:14 and then watch: Click Here
Frank2 said on 10/Jun/09
Sinatra was 5'7". So was Kelly.

Clift was about 5' 9 1/2" at best. When he got older after his near fatal car accident, he lost about an inch.

I met Jack Warden and he looked to be a solid 5'10".

And I and once spent a great evening with Borgnine and his then brand new child bride in Las Vegas at a charity benefit put on by The City of Hope. We sat next to each other and then after the event finished we went gambling. Borgnine was a terrific raconteur. He told me a bunch of fascinating stories about Hollywood and the famous people he worked with. That was long before he met and married Tova. Borgnine was at least 5'10". I seem to remember that at times when he stood up straight he was as tall as I am. But he was at least 5'10".

And yes, in FROM HERE TO ETERNITY Borgnine wore lifts. They wanted him to appear to be a giant next to Sinatra.
RisingForce said on 10/Jun/09
Frank could look taller. In From Here To Eternity he was only an inch or an inch and a half shorter than Montgomery Clift who is supposedly 5'10", even in full shots. In the same film I think he was about 2 or 2 1/2 inches shorter than Ernest Borgnine who claims to be 5'9", but had big heels in a later scene. I believe 5'10" Jack Warden had only about 2 inches on Sinatra as well. I noticed in the film though that Frank's legs seemed unusually long.

I think that 5'7", 5'7.5" for Sinatra is about right with lifts that boosted him about an inch in comparison to other actors which is why some would think he's atleast 5'8".
Ginger said on 20/May/09
This seems improbable at best - either Sinatra or Gene Kelly's listing is inaccurate. In both Anchors Aweigh & On The Town, Sinatra was shorter than Kelly (not substantially, but enough for a visual disparity). Kelly's first wife claimed (in The Memory of All That) he was 5'8", which would make 5'7" or even 5'6" for Sinatra more likely.

Frank was skinny when he was younger (he often joked about it, once qupping in one of his tv specials that he weighed less than Tommy Dorsey's trombone), and he also had good lifts, so he often can give a tall impression in photos when he was alone. His height didn't become apparent untiil he was neext o guys who were either not much shorter than him or a lot taller than him (JFK beats him by 5 inches in every photo I've seen of them). I guess I could come across 5-7, but not likely.Heck, in 1964 he was listed at 5-11 (see 12/7/05 below). If Sinatra was 5-7, there would be something official to support it. Do you have a resource that we can look at or that you can quote from? I'm pretty sure the Editor of this site is not going to change Sinatra's height to 5-7 just because someone says he is 5-7.

Frank was five seven, period. Look, I see now that unless you see it officially in writing you don't believe it.

Yeah, these would be my next questions once 'lifts' are documented for anyone: how often did the person wear them?, what size were they? did the size vary? and is the person's official height a barefooted height or is it with shoes AND with or without 'lifts'? Thanks again Rob! Well done!
Tiger said on 2/Mar/06
Thanks Rob; finally something about 'lifts' documented. Do we know what size lifts Sinatra wore ? Did this person state Sinatra's height as 5-7 ?. I have never come across 5-7 before, but I have not looked into Sinatra's height too much, either.

Editor Rob
unfortunately didn't mention his height, but how often he wore 'special shoes' or what height they gave him is unknown...
Tiger said on 2/Mar/06
No, just document where Sinatra was only 5-7 and wore lifts that made him his "desired 5-10"

Editor Rob
George Jacobs book, the guy who was his personal servant (i.e. shined all his shoes etc) did reference that he wore lifts...

"Sinatra liked about hong kong was the custom tailors. He had a dozen orange blazers made and custom elevator shoes in alligator and snakeskin"

actually, he also remarked in it saying to Marilyn Monroe: 'You're bigger than he is', to which she giggled, 'Not in his elevators'

OK Frank was six four and wore special shoes to make himself look shorter. Happy?

Frank2: I think it has to be a joke. Every section I've gone to has 'lifts' attached to your comment. You met a lot of these people, but did you really 'KNOW' them; there is a difference. Those of us who never had the pleasure of meeting Sinatra and Martin need more than "they wore lifts because they wanted to look taller". Why would Sinatra want to look 5-10? Isn't 6 feet the desired height for feeling tall if you are under 6 feet? Seems a bit strange!
Frank2 said on 2/Mar/06
No joke. I worked in the biz for nearly forty years and met or knew many celebs listed on this forum. Frank wore lifts. So did Dean Martin. So did many under five foot ten actors. Dean was 5'10" but wanted to look six feet. Frank wanted to look five feet ten.

If Sinatra was 5'7, that makes Cruise very short as Sinatra was noticeably taller than him in the pic of them from the 80s - when Sinatra was an old man.

Is Frank2 another name for McFly? Give me a break! every single page, but one or two, he states the celeb wears lifts. Where is the documentation? Where is the evidence? Please don't tell us it is a "well-known" fact either. Just because one meets a famous person does NOT mean that they know everything about that person.I guess if an opinion or surmise doesn't workout, we can always throw in the 'lifts' comment. What a joke!

Sinatra had the best lifts in the biz. He was about 5'7" without them. And remember that in the films he appeared in with Dean Martin that Dino also wore lifts. I think they both bought them from the same custom shoemaker.

To Editor Rob: www.ratpack.biz/frank-sinatra/biography.htm Sinatra's vital stats are listed for 1964. He is listed at 5'11. Now, I don't believe that for a second. I think he was lucky to see 5'9 (absolute max). What do you make of that ? That seems to be way off. I can see being off by an inch maybe an inch and a half as far as accuracy, but that seems excessive.Any ideas? Please look at that site.

Editor Rob
it seems off...I don't know where the 5ft 11 listing comes from.

Horatio, the height for a American today is almost 178cm wich is 5'10cm.
Back in 1970 it was 176,5cm, that's it 3,5cm or about 1.4" below the mean.
Horatio said on 14/Nov/05
Why would it stop him? Average height for all American men today is 5'9". Back in Frank's heyday of the 1960's, it was probably closer to 5'8".

It really didn't stop him from getting with the ladies though! :)

I guess Frankie was 174cm. You can see that in some pictures beside 180cm Dean Martin
