I’m watching a programme on Groucho Marx. My first thought was, “Is that moustache for real?”

It wasn’t! It was painted on!

Groucho was one of 4 boys and had a limited education, which haunted his career.

5ft6.

He was anywhere between 5'7" and 5'11".

I'm really here to insist that 5'6" is not "diminutive" for Pete's sake.

It may not surprise to learn that I am 5'6" -- at full stretch :(

viewing that photo of w c fields and groucho at a hollywood function, fields at 5 8 and groucho at 5 6.5 sounds about right

Look at this video of "your" 5' 6" Marx with "your" 5' 10.5" Johnny Carson: Click Here Your estimates are surely wrong for both of them. Carson was shorter and Marx was taller...
Editor Rob
I'd have thought there was about 4 inches between them there
Orlando said on 20/Mar/16
Mr. Rob, please rectify. Groucho Marx was not 5' 6" (1.6764 m) tall! That's diminutive. He was the taller of the three Marx Bros and he looked average. He had a well proportioned built and that wouldn't be possible if he was just 5' 6" as he would had to be short-legged for sure. His passport at age 48 lists him at 5ft 7.5in point blank. Surrender to the evidence. The height difference you point between 5'8" Jack Benny and Groucho is not of 5 to 6 cm, but maybe some 2 to 3 cm (if that much and if Benny was not wearing elevator shoes...). that is a different rob.

I've not looked at him for a while but 5ft 7.5 I'm not sure if he could look that tall, 5ft 7 maybe at times though, it's not impossible.

5 6 is about right, and viewing him and jack benny whom is slightly over 5 8 at least .jack was a little taller.
Orlando said on 21/Dec/15
In spite of the undeniable evidence that Groucho Marx was 5ft 7.5in (1.7145 m) aged 48 y, this page maintains that he was a diminutive 5' 6". We have some article of faith going on here...
Orlando said on 20/Dec/15
Sorry to disappoint you but according to his passport Groucho was 5ft 7.5in (1.7145 m): Click Here

Groucho Marx's height is 5'7 (171 cm)

@al: Yeah, I agree that Groucho isn't as low as 5'6" flat. At least a fraction above.
al said on 20/Apr/15
i would say that groucho is 5 7,chico is 5 5 and harpo is 5 5. I recall viewing jack benny and groucho together , jack stood over an inch taller than groucho, for jack is almost 5 9?
Tim said on 15/Aug/14
Speaking of Harpo, here he is with Lucille Ball: Click Here The height difference looks no more than 2.5 inches, stance taken into account (though Harpo at this point was approaching his mid 60s, so it's not unreasonable for him to lose some height here). So it's plausible to conclude that Harpo and Chico were both in the 5'4"-5'5" range in their peak.

I love the Marx Brothers but they weren't filmmakers like Keaton or Chaplin...not surprisingly their best films, Duck Soup and A Night at the Opera, had strong directors behind the helm. Keaton was not impressed with how indifferent the Marxs were at the filmmaking process when he worked at writing gags for them at MGM.
Arch Stanton said on 27/Dec/13
Yeah I think Harpo and Chico looked probably 5'4" if Groucho was 5'6". Clever guys I like their sense of humour. Night at the Opera is also a very fine film.
Star said on 10/Sep/13
I'd combine what Sam and 'D' below said. Pretty much 5'4"-5'5" for Harpo and Chico, 5'6"-5'7" for Groucho, and Zeppo at 5'7"-5'8".
Sam said on 9/Sep/13
Chico and Harpo were probably a 5'4"-5'5" range like Charlie Chaplin. Zeppo was slightly taller than Groucho, maybe near 5'7".
Arch Stanton said on 7/Sep/13
Rob if he was 5'6" how tall was Chico Marx? He made Groucho look tall!
Editor Rob
not watched any marx stuff for donkey's years
Arch Stanton said on 7/Sep/13
Short, no doubts, I guessed 5'5-5'6' range in Duck Soup.
Sam said on 25/Jun/13
I'd call 5'5.75", almost 5'6" but not quite and not over it for sure. In this shot, Charlie Chaplin looks about an inch shorter than Groucho, both being clearly shorter than a medium-height guy and a tall guy during tennis.

Also about the same difference in a later picture where they both quite old.

In this photo with 6'4" Louis Calhern from Duck Soup, Groucho actually looks over 5'6" though, as he's dropping some height with a looser stance and is roughly a head shorter (making him look about 5'7").

@Marxfan: Frank Sinatra wasn't that tall, BUT....he wore elevator shoes quite a lot in his prime, Groucho Marx was indeed 5'6"-5'7", a little below average for his time, but short for a man today.
Russ said on 11/Dec/12
Dick Cavett is 5'3, and he was level with Groucho. Very short guy.
Marxfan said on 4/Aug/12
Groucho Marx was tiny. You see him in the movie with Frank Sinatra. Frank was only about 5'6, and he's at least two or three inches taller than him! So that must make Chico and Harpo about 5'2 or something!
george555 said on 25/Nov/11
Zeppo is 5'8, Groucho was 5'6-5'7, Harpo and Chico were both around 5'5-5'6.
jasperwazap said on 25/Nov/11
Zeppo had an inch and a half on Groucho i'm pretty sure from the movie Monkey Business. and harpo might have been 3'' shorter than Groucho.

Gummo was the tallest, then Zeppo, then Groucho, then Harpo, then Chico. Harpo was probably about 5'1, Chico 5'0
Mr. Kaplan said on 9/Nov/10
Wasn't he the tallest Marx?

In "Room Service", 1938, Lucille Ball (probably in 3" heels) appears to tower over Groucho Marx when they're both standing straight up - at least 3" taller. here's a youtube connection. Click Here
Assuming LB to be around 5'-7 1/2" (her stated height), this would make Groucho no taller than 5'-6 1/2" at his peak height.

Editor Rob
oh, I forgot - there was another quote...

except this is from 1975 in his final years, he said in an interview, quoted in a winnipeg newspaper "I'm 5ft 5"...peak height hmm

Woody Allen is 5' 5" tall. I saw Woody's appearance on the Dick Cavett show, which they are re-airing on TCM, and when standing next to Dick both men were exactly the same height. I also watched the Groucho Marx episode of the show, and when standing next to Dick Cavett he to was exactly the same height as Dick. So all three men can be no taller than 5' 5" tall. Which is about right considering how small Groucho looks in all of his movies. And in the episode featuring Woody Allen, both he and Dick Cavett did speak about being short.

I never met Groucho, but 5' 7" might be generous. I did meet Harpo once and he towered over me! Of course, I was 4 years old at the time. It was a book signing and my mother got there a bit early and saw them putting a box behind a table with a long skirt around it so nobody could see under it. Before he stepped onto the box, Harpo was shorter than she was, and she was 5' 3" at that time. Tiny little man, and insanely funny. And yes, he COULD talk -- I heard him.

I met and even got to know Groucho since my mom dated his producer, John Guedel. Groucho was about 5'6" when I met him which was back around 1963. Many years later I was standing in line at the National Theater in Westwood waiting to get in to see Woody Allen's Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex, But Were Afraid to Ask. It tuned out that Groucho was standing right behind me with his nurse/girlfriend. I started talking with him and noticed he wasn't quite all there, but occasionally the old Grouch wit we all knew and loved came through. Pretty soon others began to notice him and the next thing you know he had a large crowd encircling him. By the time of that encounter Groucho had shrunk down to under 5'4".

Most sources have Groucho at 5'8"
Zeppo was 5'9", and Groucho seems to be only a shade shorter.
