A young Ian is appearing in a rather jolly compilation of old clips advertising vintage comedy programmes, and you can hear the 'stupid boy' - as Captain Mainwaring, played by the late Arthur Lowe, 5ft4, used to describe him - singing 'Whistle While You Work'.

I can remember how it went in its entirety, having watched it in the late 60s, eating peanuts, as it was our supermarket shopping day, and I had peanuts every week as my treat.

So this was the song:

Hardly the most taxing of lyrics to recall, there's no denying THAT! 😅 Ian literally towered over most of the elderly cast members, and some of us called him 'The Youngster', while others referred to Private Pike as 'The Tall One'.

Next to all the old men on Dad's Army, Ian looked positively tall!

There was a question on The Chase the other day which went as follows: which Dad's Army character was referred to by Arthur Lowe as "You stupid boy"?

The answer was Mr Lavender, and he did have a tendency to act a little on the stupid side, but I enjoyed his recital of....

We used to sing that in the school playground, taught to us by our Dads!

When Ian took part in a Celebrity quiz and came first or second, he came out with, "Not such a stupid boy now, am I Captain Mainwearing?" 😂😂😂

He always looked very tall in 'Dad's Army', but that's because the Home Guards consisted mainly of very old men!

Ian Lavender has finally grown up! The beard suits him!
Though he was much taller than the other actors in 'Dad's Army', he was practically the only young star there, and the others were old and rotund, so I think 5ft11 sounds fine for his peak height.
