Ha! You know what gets me about a lot of the replies to ANY of these reported heights? It's when someone disputes all of a 1/2" on someone's height. I'm sorry, but a 1/2" is negligible and there is no way in hell that ANY of you could tell the difference. I mean, a 2-3"+ discrepancy would be easier to distinguish, but when you're making the contention that you believe that such and such celeb is actually an inch or less shorter than stated, it's incredibly ridiculous. It seems like no one take into account the factor of wearing shoes when making comparisons. For this you'd have to consider that shoes probably add about 1.5 inches to your original height, therefore I'd say his between, 5'10 & 5'11, but definetly not 6ft. Lenad says on 6/Mar/09

I don't see a full 6ft with Jake Gyllenhall. He can be just a little taller than 5'11. I can say 5'11.25 or 5'11.5 are possible with him. Annonymous - the problem with those pics you posted is that I have seen many that show the contrary, with Gyllenhaal looking to be the taller one. I work at the Mac store at the Grove and today. Dec.6th, 2006 Jake Gyllenhaal and Liam Stone walked in to the store nearly at the same time.. not together but seperate. I was helping jake and Liam Stone came up to Jake and said "Liam Stone, Just watched Brokeback ..great work" then he walked away apparently to by a I POD nano for his daughter I over heard. Both guys were standing eye to eye and looked at least six feet. Stone was wearing boots and Jake was not so Jake may be a little taller than six foot. Liam Stone looked taller from a distance but it's because his head is smaller in porportion to his body. Jake had a larger head in proportion to his body so at a distance alone he does not look as tall as Liam Stone but may be taller than him. I would place jake at 6ft 1in if Stone is Six foot even. I have a two-pronged theory on why people "downgrade" Jake, as Anthony says.
A general one: A loooong time ago, people thought leading men were, of course, tall. Then word got out that a lot of them were shrimpy and were standing on boxes or the leading lady was standing in a trench so it would look like the leading man was taller. Since that revelation, there has been a "backlash" wherein no one believes it when an actor actually IS relatively tall.
A specific-to-Jake one: although he otherwise has the proportions of a tall person (leggy, large hands with long fingers, etc.) he also has an ENORMOUS head. I think that when people look at a picture of him without anything nearby to use as a frame of reference, they see a huge head on a disproportionately small body and think, "no one could have a head that big, ergo, he must have a normal sized head and a teeny little body." But if you see him next to a person with a normal sized head, it is much clearer that his head and face are like three times larger than theirs.
I said two but I have a third, this one also general: six feet isn't really extremely tall.

this morning I was playing in a pick up basketball game around 11, on the venice beach back court. Anyways, it was a 5 on 5 full court and Jake Gyllenhaal was on the other team. I am new to this site, but I found it because I was impressed by his height. I thought he was short, but he was the tallest on the court. Around 6'1, no shorter than 6.05. Also, he was playing really rough. It was surprising, but he was shoving a shorter defender around on offense and on D he was pushing through picks and cursing at people.

I am a 5.9 tall girl and my friend is 6f tall and so she looks much taller then me, as for Jake when he has some average heighted women wearing heels next to him he looks the same height as she. Well I had the privelage to meet Jake during the filming of his movie Jarhead. He was filming a few scenes down at CSUCI (california state university of channel islands) which is about five minutes from where I live. So my photography class and I were invited to come and see some of the behind the scenes stuff. While we were there one of the camera men asked if we wanted to meet somebody special and out walked Jake in a bathrobe, pajama bottoms and ugg slippers. He was significantly taller than me (seeing as I stood next to him) and I am a little bit under 5' 10". To expand on everything I've said, I was watching the Tonight Show with Jay Leno (as I do nearly every night) tonight/today and Heath Ledger was the guest. For what it is worth he was maybe half ann inch taller than Jay (but no more). It would probably be best to revist both of these guys heights as something just doesn't seem to add up, here. Jay Leno HAS to be 6'0" or taller if Jake is to be as tall as people keep saying. I can't think of a better comparison. Jay is a perfect measuring stick, and I have no reason to lie. Jake was on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno (late night/early morning 1/13/2005-1/14/2005). When he entered and stood by Jay he was as tall as Jay, or maybe even slightly shorter (by half-and-inch at the very most), but no taller. Both were in regular dress shoes. Even if we give Jay 5'11" that would only make Jake that tall or 5'10.5" (and this is in regular shoes so you subtract and inch). I'd start him down at 5'10.5" really. I hope someone is able to confirm having seen this episode of the Tonight Show, too, because it prooves that 6'0" is wishful thinking unless we've all been fooled and Jay is really 6'0" in shoes which just can't be true from all that we know of Jay, the perfect measuring stick. gyllenhaalic823 says on 12/Jan/06

You know, this is really starting to confuse me; in some pictures he looks taller, in some pictures he looks shorter.
But he isn't just 5'10" because when his big sister is next to him in heels she's only 1/2" taller (she is 5'9" naturally) so that doesn't make sense that he's only 5'10". Hmm, he may indeed be close to (or on) the 6'0" mark afterall. He's definately NOT taller than Quaid though. He may be about the same height.
Obviously we can only see the front of Jake's hair on this photo, so there's no way of knowing exactly how much extra height he gains from it. I initially said 1.5" as an exageration though! 1/2"-3/4" sounds more likely.
Add this with the extra 1/2" he gains from the slanted floor (compared to Quaid) and it means he's probably just under Quaid's height.

The picture is marginally slanted, oh let's say it adds 1/4 CENTIMETER to Jake's height.
Also, even though Jake's hair might be taller than Quaid's, you are still the tallest near the back of your head, where Jake's hair is shorter at that spot, and you can see that that means his true height is about 1/2-3/4" shorter than his hair at the front.
Oh, and Jake's head is slightly tilted, making up for Quaid's not-so-bad posture.
Also, I reconsidered Emmy Rossum. Despite what I said before, she actually does look the 5'7", and the heels look taller, especially comparing her to Quaid, so I'd say she is 5'9-9.5" with the heels. MOF says on 31/Dec/05

to Horatio: 6'0" isn't very tall; it's over the average height (5'10") but not by far. Also, they could have used certain lifts in the D.A.T. to make Quaid appear taller than Gyllenhaal because he is the father figure.
