I can agree with Rob ... Caan probably stood very close to 5-9.5 when he was young. He is now 69 yrs. old. As I've mentioned before, most people shrink .5" every decade past the age of 40. Caan's height has been reducing for 3 decades now. That is 1.5" of height loss. Subtract 1.5" from 69.5" and you end up with the most likely height for Jimmy ... 68.0" or 5'8"! My 5'8.5" is not only extremely close, but I'm still allowing him .5" less shrinkage for a man his age. Chances are he is 5'8".

One thing that I forgot is that Sugar Ray has lost a little height as well. He is about 54 now. That means, if he was 5'8.5" peak, he is now very close to 5'8"

Well this "Sugar Ray" guy has been showing me a lot lately. In the pic below he is a hair below Caan, but Caan has better posture. If Ray were standing straight, they would be close to identical in height. The problem I see is that everyone is assuming Sugar Ray is equal to his "Tail Of The Tape" height ... 5-10. I met him, I stood next to him and looked him in the eye. We were as close to equal as can be. We both stood 5-8.5. This was in the AM so at that time we may have been 5-9. He was in sneakers and I was in dress shoes. Both of our footwear gave us about 1".

All These Leonard photos are really answering a lot of questions for me. I now know Caan is 5-8.5. As I check out all these other photos, he (Caan) now becomes a gauge.

Based on his height in "The Godfather" relative to the other players, I always assumed Caan was about six feet tall. His appearance in "Thief" did nothing to alter that impression. Then I read an interview with him a few years ago that really surprised me. He himself disclosed that he was only 5'8.5". Therefore we can safely accept 5'9" without a lot of needless debating.

This is an interesting thread. I was in a cab in San Francisco yesterday and I asked the cab driver if he had any celebrities in his cab. He said that James Caan was in his cab once and they both got out. The cab driver was 6'2" and he said James Caan was a 'midget' (his word, not mine), and that he had a perfect build but was the size of a jockey. Probably an exaggeration but it seems like 5'9" might be inflated.

These days Caan seems 5'9.5" to me although 5'10" is still possible. I think Frank2 was right about him being 5'10" peak though.

Standing straighter Leonard would atleast be Caan's height, maybe a hair taller, but Leonard is also closer to the camera. Caan looks somewhere in the 5'9.5"-5'10" range there.

That picture is interesting because Brando is closer to the camera but still atleast 2 inches shorter than Caan and Pacino is closer to the camera than Brando and atleast 3 inches shorter than Brando.

Since it's almost been confirmed that Al wore lifts in that movie I'd say that whatever Al's peak height was, add atleast 5 inches for James Caan's height.

If Billy is still 5-10, then around 5-11 in the 70's is very possible. He looked it next to Harrison Ford. That'd explain Caan being an inch shorter.

I can confirm Billy Dee is 5' 10" a few years ago at Ray Courts' show. Caan I saw running through Caesars Palace and he's nowhere near 5' 10". Sly obviously gets the giant customs over Billy Dee, he was the star.

Once again 5-10 for Billy Dee Williams has hardly been confirmed, he could be 5-10 but he could easily be 5-11 or he could have easily been that. I'd still bet Caan is 5-10. Willis had 1.5/1.75 heels at the Rocky Balboa premiere himself and I think Arnold wears lifts these days anyway, so footwear probably wasn't that big of a difference between them.

Mr. R's estimate sounded like it was between 5-10 and 5-11. If he meant 5-10 flat, he wouldn't have said "close to 5-11". He probably meant 5-10.5/5-10.75.

As far as Billy and Sly in Nighthawks, they did seem about the same height. They kind of went back and forth in height throughout the movie. I specifically remember Billy was taller in the club scene when they're chasing rutger Hauer's character.

However in 2 full body shot scenes Sly was the same height or a little taller. One of the scenes was when they're entering the store where Sly's girlfriend in the movie works and the other being when a cop car drives by.

Both Sly and Billy Dee wore in 70's heels, normal for the time. I'd guess that at the very least the two of them are within an inch of eachother but more likely they're about the same height.

If Pacino, Caan and Brando all wore lifts then it's pretty fair to compare them

Judging by this I'd say Caan at 5-10, Brando at 5-8 and Pacino at 5-5 fits.

I think Frank2 is right. Caan is 5-10.

In the Godfather he looked tall and in promo pictures he had 2 or 3 inches on 5-8 Marlon Brando and 5-6 inches on 5-5, 5-6 Al Pacino.

Both Pacino and Caan I believe wore lifts in the godfather and Brando may have as well. Brando was a known lift weraer. Pacino wearing lifts in the Godfather is a documented fact too.

Even now Caan looks tall

In my opinion I think Caan, Sly and Arnold are all within 2 inches of eachother in height right now. Caan and Sly being an inch max different and Arnold at most having 2 inches on either but maybe even less.

Not a chance caan is 5'9". Josh duhamel (co-star on Las Vegas) is 6'2" and I've met him on several occasions. I can say that with accuracy, as thats how tall I am. Now look at the very "few" shots you see of them both on camera -- caan is like a foot shorter, haha. Btw, he makes Josh take off his shoes on the set.

Caan was really close to 5'10'' in his prime ( could be that he was 5'9'', cause he wore boots all the time in the older movies + the possibility of lifts), but nowadays he seems to have lost almost 2 inches...We gotta also remember that he has gained a lot of weight...that makes U look shorter...Just take a look at pics of John Travolta when he was young and now. Mr. Travolta looked a lot taller back in the old days(slim guys wearing heels).

In the film Alien Nation he looked several inches shorter than co-star Mandy Patinkin, but I believe Mandy wore lifts in that film as well as had his head made to appear higher with makeup.
