I agree with Lebensdorf, he looks tall in Godfather. but I can imagine someone shrinking like 4 inches almost. that scares me because I am only 5-7 :-)

And, yet, he does seem tall in the Godfather. I would say what others are saying: his peak height was higher than what you have listed (probably, it was 5-10.5) and he has now shrunk to about 5-7.

He looked 6ft in the godfather because he wore lifts and he was made to look like a 6ft sicilian. Really he looked no more than 5ft 9-10.

What!? I'm confused. James Caan is only 5'9 and his peek height was only 5'9.5!? How come he looks 2-3 inches taller than Marlon Brando in Godfather who is listed here as a 5'9.5 guy? Glenn/Rob I think you guys have to do some clearing up. For me it's either Marlon Brando is 5'7.5(in Godfather) and James is 5'9.5 or Brando could be 5'9 and Caan, 5'11. Kindly do some explanation on this. I think this tells how much you guys are sharp in telling one's height.

In the godfather he is the tallest. I agree with Dmeyer that he could have been 5`11 in his prime. Anyway he was dwarfed by John Wayne in El Dorado. But Wayne was 6`3 minimum

Not a chance caan is 5'9". Josh duhamel (co-star on Las Vegas) is 6'2" and I've met him on several occasions. I can say that with accuracy, as thats how tall I am. Now look at the very "few" shots you see of them both on camera -- caan is like a foot shorter, haha. Btw, he makes Josh take off his shoes on the set.

Look at Stallone & Caan in golf shoes (I've seen the other photos, they are). Look at Sly's neck & Caan. Sly is doing his "Stallone effect". Caan looks like Sly's height: under 5' 9". Anybody who thinks Sly is 5' 10.5" is living in a dream world looking at this shot with both in spikes.

He might have been 5'10 in his younger days, but if you see him in Las Vegas, he looks no where near it. 5'8 is a closer bet.

Had a lot of swagger when he was young. Looked 5'10" - 5'11" ish. Seems shorter these days. Kind of hunched over and thick through the waste like he has back problems. Appears shorter and maybe in pain. Looks tired. 5'9" tops.

Stood 5' from him many yrs. ago in Cape May NJ...he was with who I assumed were his parents. or an elderly couple ...could have been around 1976 or so...I'm 5'6"....he certainly looked 5'10" in sneakers....didn't have the courage to ask for an autograph...he looked so relaxed.

I'd put him at no more than 5'7.5".I think actors don't care so much about their heights as they get older and find it uncomfortable to wear their lifts.People really don't shrink that much as they get older.

Caan was really close to 5'10'' in his prime ( could be that he was 5'9'', cause he wore boots all the time in the older movies + the possibility of lifts), but nowadays he seems to have lost almost 2 inches...We gotta also remember that he has gained a lot of weight...that makes U look shorter...Just take a look at pics of John Travolta when he was young and now. Mr. Travolta looked a lot taller back in the old days(slim guys wearing heels).

I remember years ago, late 70s maybe, Caan walked onto a talk show and was greeted by Sammy Davis Jr. Both appeared to be wearing cowboy boots. Caan was only slightly taller than Davis. I was flabbergasted. Trying to judge the height of actors as they appear in movies is silly. Caan seemed so tall in the Godfather. Hey, his son is listed as 5.5 ft., go figure.

Guy's,didn't you see the episode on the "Las Vegas" show which also featured Jean Claude Van Damme,standing next to Jean-Claude you can clearly see he is about an inch shorter and Jean-Claude is about 5'8.5,so james will be about 5'7 maybe 5'7.5 Not wearing lifts,just regular shoes.

James is five ten. He wore lifts in The Godfather. In the film Alien Nation he looked several inches shorter than co-star Mandy Patinkin, but I believe Mandy wore lifts in that film as well as had his head made to appear higher with makeup. I've saw him regularly when he starred in Chicago Hope and he looked to be my height which is five eleven.

I"ve always wondered if Caan wore elevator shoes or lifts when he played Sonny in the Godfather because he came across so much more taller than the rest of the cast. Granted, Pacino isn't very tall but a guy who's 5'9" doesn't usually stand out. Just my observation.

In El Dorado he is two and half inches shorter than Robert Mitchum and lot shorter than John Wayne.

Caan was probably 179 cm at his peak and he wored elevator shoes when he portrayed Sonny in The Godfather. In the Godfather script Sonny is decribed as a tall guy.

I remember distinctly during Caan's Brian's Song days in the 70's, that he was listed as 5-10 and a half. Therefore, this would make sense if Brando is just over 5-8, and it also makes sense that Caan has lost a little height to about 5-9 now.

I never new caan was under 5'10. If you see him in the movie the godfather, he is taller then 5'10 inch Brando. I don't know what to make of it. Maybe brando was under his known height, or caan just really shrunk a few inches.

[celebheights editor: There was always debate as to whether Brando was a 5ft 10, some said 5ft 9 but yep, Caan over the last 20 years has shrunk a guaranteed 2 inches. It's not as sever as say James Garner who has shrunk 4 inches though]
