American actor best known for roles in films like LA Confidential, Babe, Star Trek: First Contact, The Green Mile, The Queen, Space Cowboys, The Sum of All Fears, The Artist and Spider-Man 3. On TV he has appeared in series such as 24, American Horror Story: Asylum, Six Feet Under and Easy Street.
In the Frederick Post, 2001, he commented on his tall stature, saying "Just put 6 feet 6...It's a little more than that, but 6 feet 7 inches sounds terrible." In 'The Age', Cromwell refers to an audition he had for the movie 10 - opposite Dudley Moore - mentioning that he "was embarrassed by the director, Blake Edwards, who looked at me and said, 'what am I supposed to do with THAT?'. I was a little hurt to be referred to as an inanimate object at an audition. I was told by my agent that a number of big stars won't work with anyone two inches (five centimeters) taller than them and most of them are under six feet, so you have to be prepared to have trouble."

He was still 6’6+ in Green mile next to Morse and MCD. Edged both very handily. Today it’s hard to tell. He can look 6’4 at times but may be 6’4.5.

@Avi and Canson: Cromwell at 197 range would put Michael Clarke Duncan and David Morse at 191 range at most, which they always looked taller than. Elsewhere, Cromwell did not ever look shorter than 199 range at his peak height.

@Avi: Cromwell was likely what he was listed here in his prime. He was at least 6’6”. He was a good couple inches taller than David Morse in Green Mile and he edged MCD the same way

If anything, he’s looking 6’4 range in the pictures with Nicholas Braun and Tim Robbins. Maybe even 6’4 flat. I’m doubtful he’s that short in reality, since a 2.5” loss seems a bit excessive for a guy who (was) in his late 70s at the time the pictures were taken. It’s not impossible though. Like Andrea said, it’s difficult to tell without seeing whole body photos showing footwear, sloping in the ground, etc.
This is a good reminder that very tall guys in particular need to pay attention to back and spine health, especially as we age. Obviously everybody does, but we seem to be more susceptible to those problems.

Combine that with if they're very heavy, and it's even more. Another factor is if they have acromegaly, in which the bone structure is larger and thicker than non-acromegaliacs, so in theory, the spinal column would be bigger as well, causing bigger disc shrinkage and therefore losing more height. Someone like Big Show for example, who checks all the boxes mentioned above, might lose an easy 2" throughout the day. And he's only 50 but may have lost over 2.5" already.

He was easily an inch taller if not 3 cm taller than me. But he said that he was 6’7-6’8 at his peak and this guy was in his 60s. My best guess is he was probably a 6’7 guy peak or perhaps just a hair under due to the high variance throughout the day and he may have measured 6’7.5 or just under at his peak in the morning. He was a heavier guy so very possible that the combination of that and the height are a given inch of not a hair over. I could see someone that size (6’7 range) losing major height later in life just like Cromwell as they were even taller than Cromwell was at his peak

Well, he was "only" 77 in that pic with Tim apparently... 6'5 is better for sure, but still quite optimistic. More like 6'4.5 at the very most, giving him a decent benefit of the doubt that he could measure taller than he can look, IMO.

Editor RobElderly people can be some of the trickier to guess, because like Ive said, how much is bad posture or simply curvature which doesn't reveal as much 'hidden' height when measured.

He was definitely taller than Tim Robbins in several pictures of them.
However, I was surprised a slouching Burnham beat out Cromwell, with Nicholas Braun.
I think Cromwell lost a bit more height, but he did beat out Kobe Bryant, with Michael Duncan.
Both peak and current listings are fine.

@Joe: I bet today he’s still 6’5 range. His peak may have been somewhere along the lines of 199ish or 198-199. But he is so lanky that he gives the impression of being taller than he is. So even if he’s 6’5 range today he still gives off 6’6+ whereas prob 6’7 or more peak

I've never hung out with a guy over 6ft4, and I've known two of them. Boy, did they give me neck-ache! To encounter a fellow of 6ft5.5 would be even worse, especially if he's as unhinged as this one!

For some reason there is a noticeable difference just from 197 to 196 in the flesh. Anything leading up to 6’6 (weak 6’6) just looks too lanky and he is a textbook example of that. Either way neither is a desireable height (6’5.5 at a low or 6’6.5) unless you’re a pro athlete. It stops looking as appealing when you cross too far into the 196 range past about 196.5 perhaps

Not more than a few days ago, I mentioned in one of my comments that there were two noteworthy guys by the name of 'Cromwell', Thomas, who came to power in the 15th century and Oliver, who was extremely powerful in the 16th!
Now I think it's time to add another one to the history books - one day! The ginormous acting talent that is JAMES Cromwell! The earliest part of his that I know of was in an episode of 'The Little House on the Prairie', in which he befriends a tall and awkward teacher, and she falls for him, though her feelings are not reciprocated! It was down to this appearance that it was a while before I realised just how very tall James is. The woman, played by Lucy Lee Flippin must be in access of 6ft herself, because it looked very much like a normal man/woman difference - to my eyes anyway!
Then I saw him in 'Babe' and the penny still hadn't dropped! It wasn't until I saw 'The Green Mile' that I noticed how tall James is! I reckoned on about 6ft7!
Now I am watching him in 'Boardwalk Empire', and, although I knew he'd be in it sooner or later, I didn't know when! However, he was impossible to miss when he did make his debut, and even though his part involves a lot of sitting down, you do have the luxury of seeing him stand, and tower over everybody!
So from the innocent likes of 'The Little House on the Prairie' and 'Babe' to the extremely serious 'The Green Mile' and 'Boardwalk Empire', James has proved that he can turn his acting skills to anything!
And another thing - he is one of those men who has got better with age!

Anyone remember Cromwell in Revenge of the Nerds. He shared some full bodied scenes with Anthony Edwards (6'2"), and Keith Carradine (6'1''-6'2"). Cromwell was taller but not by much. He may have been bending slightly giving a him 6'4"-6'4.5" with flat shoes.

That article was published in 2010, and if James was as "short" as a very weak 6'6" by then, his son would still probably be closer to 6'9", as James B just commented.

I watched Longest yard with Adam Sandler yesterday. There were enough scenes where Cromwell stood in front of Sandler. All I can tell is, that Cromwell is never 6'7". He had about 6 inches on Sandler who is 5'11" at his peak. So 6'5" could be right for Cromwell's actual height.

It's just my father was a solid 6ft4 in his prime (now my height) and I would've liked to have outgrown him by a bit. My mother's only 5ft5 though so it was more in my favour than I probably realised!

Significantly taller than Jonathan Frakes in 'First Contact' and waaaaaay taller than Clint Eastwood in 'Space Cowboys'. I never doubted he was under 6'6,than pic with Goran Visnjic is a good indication.He could have lost some height by now however.

Anonymous King, you are right! James looks almost a foot taller than Glenn on this photo. I also don't think that Cromwell is under 200cm, I would give him 201cm (6'7 1/4"). I also don't know why Rob won't change his height, he's definitely taller than 6'5 1/2". We all know that Rob is a pessimistic about human heights.

from the distance i thought the guy was 6-4.then when i got up close to take the pic,he seemed 6-5.when i looked at the image on my camera,i was like whoa,i have to ask him.he said "im nearly 6-7".i agree he give more a 6-5 impression.

::shrug:: I don't know... I just don't see him being a foot taller than you in that picture. I've seen basketball pictures where a 7' center is standing next to a team mate that is 6' or 6'1", and the shorter guy comes up to only the shoulders of the taller guy. Sorry if I made you mad.

My guess is that Cromwell is 6-4 to 6-4 1/2 and both look to be standing with good posture. If a 6-0 man were standing in Glenn's space the tip of his head would probably be the same as Cromwell's eye level. It's more likely true than not that his eye level is about 4 or 4 1/2 inches from the top of his head.

When I first saw Babe I didn't recognize that Cromwell is tall anyway but in many websites he looks tall enough so I could say he is a snitch under 6'7". I'd give him 6'6 3/4" (exactly 2 metres). He really looks that tall.

This guy can't be under 6'6". Look at this pic with Visnjic on ER. Visnjic is at least 192cm and his eyes are barely over James Cromwell' mouth. He was 61 years old. I'm pretty sure he's still near 2 meters

I saw The green mile yesterday. I was shocked by how tall David Morse looked next Tom Hanks. At least 10 cms taller. Then Cromwell stood next to Morse and he looked clearly taller, about five cms. If Morse is 193 Cromwell was at the time of that fil around 198

He dwarfs Glenn in that photo. I don't doubt 6'7'' or therabouts in his prime. His height appears to have been a problen for him getting into acting so he was hardly likely to sneak on an inch or two. As he is well into middle age now may have lost a little height I guess but still looks 6'6'' or so from photo above.

Cromwell definitely looks 6'7" in his early work. Perhaps and inch shorter today at age 67. Here are two shots with the 5'6" Martin Sheen. Even leaning over in the scene from "West Wing" he looks a foot taller (if you take away Sheen's hair).
