Honestly I think it's less that child actors turn out short and more that it's an *accurate* picture of human stature in a way we don't usually see. We hear the line "Hollywood is short" a lot, but for real leading men that's not really the case, aside from a few exceptions such as Cruise. There is some height bias for the big-name A-list male stars.
Obviously, with children height doesn't even enter into the equation, so those children with "short" genes are given as much opportunity as anyone else. There are plenty of former child actors who are tall, and plenty who are average- and some who are short. The difference is, we aren't used to seeing men below, say, 5'8 with a major Hollywood presence (even though about 30% of men are below 5'8), because it's tougher for them. So to see even a few "short" former child actors is jarring. I think it's too bad, but there you go.

Jamal, I would think it comes down to this. You either have a parent that was an athlete or not. The non-athlete probably did theater, music or acting in school. It never panned out to anything more. They grow old and have a kid, a kid with their genes. Where do you think they will find an after-school activity for their child? That is right. it's unreal to hear that some people actually think kids decide how tall they get to be by their eating habits. just unbelievable. genetics decide your physical attributes, apart from weight/musculature to some degree- before adulthood. Mathew says on 1/Jun/10

Alot of child actors are short. They are usually older than they play and people dont notice how short they are early in there careers because they expect them to grow. Short kids are usually the best actors though ZAQ says on 13/Jan/09

Have you ever seen a show with a family where the Kid is as tall as the dad NO!.
usually the Dad should be 3-4 inches taller then the son
They want to pick short kids that look young it works out much better.
For ex. Joshua Jackson in the Mighty Ducks

While I agree that it's important to eat healthy, it's specious at best to think that this guy is short because he was on a bad diet when he was younger. Given the tons of crap that Americans eat and given their size - height and width - the diet link doesn't hold up. Odds are his folks are short and so is he. I have measured Jenny at a few heights in the evening now, yesterday she was 5ft 8.25 actually. Her range can be as high as 5ft 8.6 and as low as 5ft 8.25!] Big Show says on 6/Oct/08
