A 1984 article also mentioned: "Ask John Hillerman what it's like to play opposite TV hunk Tom Selleck when you're 5-foot-7, 150 pounds, hair's thinning and you've been 30 years in the business and he'll tell you pronto - the top!"

Rob, can Hillerman have 5'6.75"?

Rob, maybe I could go anywhere from 5’6” to 5’6.5” for Hillerman’s peak, he could have lost a bit by Magnum P.I. days. So I might steer more towards a strong 5’6”. I think at most 5’6.5”, which is ironic seeing you think at least 5’6.5”. 5’7” Larry Manetti was clearly taller than Hillerman.

Rob, maybe weak 5’7” for Hillerman?

Here Betty White’s heels look no bigger to me than the ones worn by Tony Curtis on The Persuaders! So about two inches would take her to about 5’6” and she looks quite even with Hillerman here. He never once looked a full 5’7” to me, Frank Sinatra was at least an inch (possibly two inches) taller than Hillerman in Magnum P.I. (when Frank was in his seventies).

Weak 5ft 7 might be a believable range, I can't quite see him as a flat 5ft 6.

Rob, any chance of a downgrade from 5’7” for Hillerman?

Even taking ground level into consideration, this photo shows that if Larry Manetti was a true 5’7”, Hillerman was certainly under it. I still would go with 5’6” peak for Hillerman actually, he couldn’t have shrunk by Magnum, filming of the show would have wrapped by the time he turned 55.

I think at least 5ft 6.5

@Rob

Can you please update Hillerman to 5’6”?
At the end of Blazing Saddles, you can see Hillerman’s height is right in between 5’5” Mel Brooks and 5’7” Liam Dunn when they are all standing in a line, cheering off the Sheriff.
In an episode of Magnum P.I, Frank Sinatra also has a few inches on Hillerman.
Strongly suspect 5’7” was an in shoes measurement.

I believe a flat 5’7” is too generous for Hillerman’s peak height. He looked more 5’6” than 5’7”, particularly in Magnum P.I. when he seemed shorter than 5’7” listed Larry Manetti. 5’7” listed Liam Dunn looked considerably taller than Hillerman in Blazing Saddles. I’d give Hillerman a flat 5’6” at peak, maybe 5’6.25” at a pinch.

RIP to the guy. Would've guessed him a bit shorter than this but it seems fair enough.

The difference between him and tom selleck isn't that easy to tell at one glance :

Let's be real. Anyone can see John Hillerman cannot be taller than ...maybe 5 4" , he has short torso and legs. Actresses standing next to hom were always at a distance or standing on a slope. Look at him next to Tom Seelect, he is at least a foot shorter.

Hillerman was no less than 6'3.

Higgy appears to be a good foot shorter than Magnum in so many of the episodes. I'd guess him to be no more than 5'6, max, when the show was in it's prime.
Vito said on 20/Aug/11
In the show, the top of Higgy's head is almost always at Magnum's shoulder level... 12 inches or so.... therefore, if Magnum is a legitimate 6'4, Higgy was 5'4, very similar to Orville. TC appeared to be about 2 to 3 inches shorter than Magnum, but also wore lifts, so he's about 6' or so.

I agree with the comments below. 5'5' or MAX 5'6. His upper body is far too small for a 5'7 guy.

I saw a publicity shot of John and Tom Selleck for the Magnum P.I. series, and John appears 10" shorter than Tom. They are both standing straight, so the photo serves as a good comparison. We know Tom was a solid 6'4" back then, so I'd put John right at 5'6".
I would put John at 5'6".

Looked more like 5'6" on PI. He was almost 1 foot shorter than Selleck.
