José Ferrer is starring in an episode of Columbo, and what a star-studded cast it is too, which includes Lew Ayres and Jessica Walter, from 'Play Misty For Me'.

The episode is called 'Mind Over Mayhem', and José runs an institute for the particularly brainy. I missed the beginning, but I questioned José's sincerity when he ran a guy over and stole some heroin. He's a muscle-bound man, who was able to sling his victim over his shoulder to carry him into his house, whereupon he poured himself a drink and had a smoke - the cheek of it!

José isn't as tall as his late son, Miguel. I can see around 4-4.5 inches between José and Columbo, but don't doubt he was 5ft10 in his prime.

Wonderful actor with a great, commanding voice. His Cyrano is the definitive portrayal. My guess is 5’9’’. But who cares because he came off as a giant on the big screen.

@ wishbone - This guy blew me away in 'The Sentinel', I can tell you! I read a write-up on the film and when I saw it, it was every bit as powerful as I was expecting. Jose played a big part in it, so I will second what you say about his acting ability! 😀👍

5ft10 peak height.

Puerto Rico's greatest actor! Paired with 5'3" Rita Moreno,Jose is one of the greatest actors to come from Latin America,as would Anthony Quinn and Cantinflas. He clearly deserved his 1950 Best Actor Oscar for Cyrano De Bergerac and his 5'10" height is about my height. Also a fine director.

I have just seen Jose in the frightening, 1977 mess-with-my-head-why-don't-you film 'The Sentinel'!

The film sports such an impressive cast that it simply had to be looked into afterwards, and I found out merely minutes ago that the 'robed priest' was played by Jose Ferrer, who was married to Rosemary Clooney, the parents of late actor Miguel Ferrer, and cousin to George Clooney, whose father was Nick Clooney, Rosemary's brother!

Now isn't that fantastic?

The film doesn't offer much scope to take in Jose's height until the end, when you can tell he IS above average, especially for a crispy old man... if you aren't sidetracked by the truly shocking images that pass before your eyes!

I'm settling for 5ft9.25!

This one isn't great given posture and being on a golf course and not seeing footwear but Jimmy Stewart on the left and Fred next to him I think you can see that the likelihood is that Fred was not quite as tall as Jimmy. I think 6'2.5" would be about right for him.
Arch Stanton said on 23/Feb/14
I don't think Fred looked a proper 6'3", he looks more 6'2" range. He was close but I doubt he'd have been a full 6'3". He looked about 4 cm taller than 185cm Van Johnson to me.
Arch Stanton said on 22/Feb/14
Yeah you could argue 5'9.5" for Ferrer but he certainly looked close to it.
Arch Stanton said on 22/Feb/14
Thanks Rob. Are Fred McMurray and Van Johnson worth adding? 189 and 185 seems a good shout.
Editor Rob
is the 6ft 3 that fred got called regularly a possibility, I've not looked much at him, I have had van johnson on here for a while ag 6ft 1
Arch Stanton said on 20/Feb/14
Nah on seeing him stand between Fred McMurray and Van Johnson 177-178cm looks accurate. 185cm for Van Johnson and 189cm for McMurray looks a good shout in comparison.
Arch Stanton said on 20/Feb/14
He really doesn't look much different to Van Johnson in The Caine Mutiny who was listed at 185cm!
Arch Stanton said on 20/Feb/14
Rob can you add, best remembered for films such as Cyrano de Bergerac, Moulin Rouge, The Caine Mutiny, The Great Man, The Greatest Story Ever Told and A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy?

Dustin Hoffman said on his recent Dave Letterman visit that he played a joke on Jose Ferrer dressed as "Tootise"(watch it: hilarious!!!)
He said he was short, his height...
Here is Hoffman on Letterman:

Either Dustin is very bad ad estimating heights or Jose was much shorter by then than 5'10". But Dustin was probably wearing womens heels when he played that joke on Jose. I highly doubt that Jos

Well, my dad was 5'9.5" and my brother is 6'1" so there's goes that argument right out the window. And how about Donald Sutherland being near 6'4" and his son being many inches shorter? José was 5'9". There is no more argument coming from for me since I both saw him in person and watched his various films. His publicity made him 5'10". Watch the film Crises starring Cary Grant and tell me José was even 5'10". He's four inches shorter than Grant. Hell! He might of been only 5'8".

Lifts on wax dummies? That's a riot! When I saw Andy Williams he was several inches shorter than me and looked about 5'7". I didn't bother to look at his shoes.

Burns was truly little once he became an octogenarian.
Paul said on 20/Apr/06
From what I've heard, Andy Williams is less than 5'7". He might be closer to 5'4" or 5'5". He wears huge, and I mean huge, lifts. If you ever see him perform, check out his footwear. Evel Knievel could launch off them.

George Burns was listed at 5'7" in his younger days, but that is now suspect given Frank2's statement Benny was that height since Burns was shorter. Burns was probably no more than 5'3" or 5'4" by the time he reached his 90s. Bob Hope towered over him! And Bob didn't tower over many people in his later years. I've seen the wax figures of both Hope and Burns at Madamme Tussauds. Hope is portrayed as being 5'10ish while Burns is a couple of inches shorter. The funny thing is, both figures are wearing lifts.

I was speaking with an old friend who was with me way back when I met Danny Kaye, Jack Benny and Kirk Douglas at an outdoor party in Brentwood, California held by Bob Laverty who owned Thriftymart and was a close friend of my friend's parents. That was back in the late sixties. Anyway, he told me that he believes there were some photos taken that day with us standing with some of these stars and he's trying to get them from Laverty who's now quite ill. If he finds them I'll post them here. You can see that Kirk is 5'8" standing next to me. The difference is identical to me with Jeffrey Kramer on his thread on this website. Danny Kaye was about my height and Jack Benny was no more than 5'7". If I remember correctly, Kaye's wife Sylvia Fine was with him that day. I believe Benny was alone. Douglas was holding court with several attractive women surrounding him. Kaye was nice, but quite shy. And I think George Burns was there. I'd see him occasionally at General Service studios where he kept an office until he died. That's where the old Burns and Allen TV show was filmed. Burns was short, shorter than Jack Beeny and the last time I saw him he looked so short that he only came up to my shoulder.

Positive. I met him and he was about an inch shorter than me on one occasion and on another he was wearing lifts and was about my height. I knew Jerry and he was 5'10". Both men were roughly the same size, although Dean always wore lifts while Jerry didn't which now makes me wonder if Dean was acually about 5'9.5". I first met Dean one day at NBC/Burbank back when he was doing his TV show. I happen to run into him in the hallway outside the studio. I saw Johnny Carson there as well and he was about 5'10". One TV star really surprised me as to how short he was and that was Andy Williams. He was about 5'7".

Ferrer is on a box. Watch the film Crises which starred Cary Grant as an American doctor ordered to operate on Ferrer playing a Castro-like dictator of a fictitious South American country. Ferrer is obviously several inches shorter than 6' Grant. Was cary taller than Peter O'Toole?

Yes, I've seen Lawrence (many times) and José is wearing boots with two inch heels and lifts inside. In close-up's he's on a ramp. I've been on dozens of movie sets and watched how they shift actors to appear closer to another in height especially in close-up's. This is done more for esthetic reasons than to accentuate another actor's size. But in Lawrence they were making out Ferrer to be a brutal Turkish Bey so I feel that David Lean did this on purpose.

Ferrer was 5'9" max.
