Rob, strong or weak 6ft4 in his prime?

Here's Max with Fess Parker in 2003 Parker aged 78 would be down from 6ft5.5 peak but even with that Max looks a solid 6ft4.

Good catch with that picture of John Wayne and the Baers, Tall. Wayne appears to be about six foot three and, since he was in costume, would have been wearing cowboy boots. The movie he was making at that time was The Horse Soldiers, shot in 1959, when Wayne was 52. So Wayne couldn't claim advanced age for his apparent less-than-six-foot-four size in the picture. So, based on the picture, I'm going to set Wayne's height at just under six foot three.

Jethro's dad former HW boxing champ Max Baer Snr was at times listed as 6'3" - but more often than not recorded at 6'2.5". Max Baer Snr's brother Buddy (Jethro's rea life uncle) was 6'6"-6'6.5" - among other screen appearances he played the giant in Abbott and Costello's Jack and the Beanstalk.

The guy Max Baer Snr beat for the title - Primo Carnera - The Ambling Alp - was in fact 6'5.75" - though his height was often inflated.

Here's a pic of Max Snr Max Jnr and John Wayne on the set of one of Wayne's movies - Max Snr had among the broadest shoulders you will ever see:-

Another pic of Baer Jr standing alongside 6'4" Forrest Tucker - Baer Jr looking taller but Tucker a bit past peak I would guess

Tucker's 6'4" appears upheld in this pic with solid 6'4" Vincent Price

Baer standing alongside American Football Coach Paul Bryant listed at 6'4" - Baer perhaps looking a touch taller but postures not perfect:-

I saw his dad referred to as 'a big person...6'3 and 215 lbs". I've seen 6'2.5 and 220 as well. His dad was a beast, huge for the 1930's one of the greatest boxers ever.

I'd say 6'3.75". He looks a little over an inch taller than Ebsen, who was more like 6'2.5" rather than his billed 6'3".

He looks like Simon Cowell in the above photo...

I'm six foot four and I have never done a crunch in my life. I apologize. Jethro.

I think the 189cm might be an official boxing measurement.

Rob, could you add Max Baer Sr?

He was also described as 6ft4 but then listed 6ft2½ in other places. I reckon that would be closer. Naturally you can see where his son inherited the height from. A 'strong' tall father and mountainous 6ft6½ uncle

called 6ft 2 a few times yeah, but would need to look into it.

Max Jr was definitely 6' 4". As "The Beverly Hillbillies" series progressed, there appeared to be a widening gap between Max and Buddy Ebsen who was originally 6' 3" peak. Buddy was getting older and heading towards 6' 2.5". Rob, how about a Buddy Ebsen page? In his later TV work (e.g. "Barnaby Jones", "Matt Houston"), Buddy was closer to 6' 2".

His father was Max Baer 6'-21/2" who was heavy weight champ in the early 30's. He killed a man in the ring and never got over it. Max was a lovable clown who should never have been a boxer but was one of the hardest hitters in boxing history. He also starred in The Prize Fighter and The Lady, and many more including the last movie for Bogie The Harder They Fall.

If you watch The Beverly Hillbillies (and I did, as I was an unusually backward child) Baer seems to be just about an inch taller than Buddy Ebsen, who claimed six foot three. So: two actors on one TV show who were telling the truth about their heights. Odd.

Buddy Ebsen was 6 ft 2.5 to 6 ft 3 in. Max was a little taller at 6 ft 4 on The Beverly Hillbillies.

Max's height seems correct at 6 ft 4 in. I would guess Buddy Ebsen's height at 6 ft 2.5
manitobaboy said on 6/Nov/08
Tommy Laughran was the fighter who beat Carnera on points. Laughran was listed at 5'11, 189 lbs and Carnera at 6'6" and 272.
Manitobaboy said on 26/Sep/08
Primo Carnera was listed as 6'7" and between 265 - 280 in some fights. He lost on points to a 5'10, 195lb. fighter whose name escapes me in what was supposedly the greatest difference in size for a title match.
Pat said on 1/Jan/08
That would equate to about 6'7'' in todays terms.

he was always a big powerful looking jethro.
When he did stong stunts he actually looked like he could.

In the movie Born to Dance, Buddy Ebsen looks the same as James Stewart. He always looked 6ft 3and half to me. His website also says this.
