i met patti a few months ago in london. apart from being utterly spectacular, she seemed quite short to me. and i am a very short 5ft. ofcourse i was incredibly shocked as in the PSG photos she always looked almost as tall as the men. but she is quite tiny in real life. i was wearing a very small heel as was she.. i'm just certain i wasn't looking upwards and we were on a level ground.... ahh this is all so confusing.

One small correction, irshgrl; believe it or not, Bruce Springsteen wrote "Because the Night" and gave it to Smith. According to a post on songfacts.com, "Springsteen gave this to Patti Smith in 1976 because he thought it would suit her voice. He was also in a legal battle with his manager, Mike Appel, that kept Bruce from recording for almost 3 years. It became the only hit for Patti Smith". Apparently Patti wrote the verse lyrics herself, so I suppose it's actually a co-authorship, although the music and hook are definitely classic Springsteen. In all seriousness, "Horses" is beyond classic - and Mapplethorpe's cover photo is one of classiest, most memorable portraits in rock history. I doubt Leibovitz, Ritts or LaChapelle could have done any better.
That album, "Radio Ethiopia," and "Easter" are my top three. "Gone Again" is great, too.

As Glenn did explain, Patty SMYTH, sang the 80s hit, "Good-Bye to You", was the lead singer from the group "Scandal", and is currently married to Tatum O'Neal's ex hubby, Tennis champ, "John McEnroe". Patty SMITH, pictured with Glenn, is a poet and is sort of the female "Neil Young" of the day. She has her own band and began and was discovered in the early 70s in NY's Bowery at CBGBs, to be specific. She wrote the smash single "Because the Night" which she recorded and other artists like Natalie Merchant (of 10,000 Maniacs) have since recorded. She is considered to be one of Rock and Roll's most influential female artists. She was big in the late 70s and early 80s. Her style is similar to say Neil Young’s or Bob Dylan's.
