Comment on the Height of Ralph Fiennes
Eric said on 27/Mar/16
I think he is a solid 5'10.
ArjunaKorale said on 19/Mar/16
I go a little back on what I said previously...Fiennes may not be as short as 177 cm (5 ft 9.5 inches)...but I still can't see him as 180 cm (5 ft 11) tall compared to full on 6 foot (183 cm) actors such as Edward Norton & Adrien Brody...when Fiennes has been around these 6 ft tall actors, he always seems like 4 or even 5 cm shorter...perhaps 178 cm (5 ft 10) or 179 cm (5 ft 10.5) is a better fit for his height. I find him as watchable as Brody & Norton - maybe one reason why I love The Grand Budapest Hotel so much as all three actors are in it....besides, it's a v dreamy, fantastical film even without those 3 crazy actors in it!

Here he is with 5'8" Alden Ehrenreich.

Actually my comment below is linked to Lance Armstrong.

Out of bed: 5'9"
Bare Minimum: 5'8"
He was listed 5ft 8 at US Olympic Team, did they measured him? IMDB says 5'8.5..
I think the 5'9.5 at TDF was a measurement with shoes. Then Armstrong decided to round up and claimed 5'10.
176.2 cm (5ft 9.37in) said on 22/Dec/15
Next to Uma the angles are not particularly meaningful. I think he would still measure a solid 5ft 11. I guess facing Neeson he could have a slight footwear advantage. Playing a Nazi he should wear military boots and Neeson regular shoes.
Besides, we all know our beloved 00510 is an elevator guy..
said on 21/Oct/15
IMO 5'11" is a prudent mark for him...he may be 5'11.25"...Look at him with Liam Neeson in 1993: Click Here
If Neeson was at peak a flat 6'4" then Fiennes ouldn't have been under 5'11-11.5"...
In many scenes he looks no more than 10-12 mAx cms shorter than Neeson...
Axaros said on 12/Oct/15
If Fiennes is truly 5'10'' as a lot of people say Craig must be 5'9'', that is impossible!
said on 29/Sep/15
He came once to our college, and I happen to be standing close to him for a minute, and he's more 5ft 10in. For sure.
And even if he was 5'11'', that means Uma Thurman can't be 5ft 11.25in. HLook at this pic from The Avengers: Click Here
Here he's a just little bit taller than here, but she's wearing heels as well. Click Here
ArjunaKorale said on 25/Jan/15
Rob, you got it wrong with this one, Fiennes always looks around 5 ft 10 (178 cm or even 177 cm) in publicity shots & tv interviews. I wouldn't go on the films as camera angles are used a lot more to distort real height.
said on 18/Jan/15
@Editor Rob: An interesting still from Schindler's List: Click Here
Shame there's no visible footwear, maybe Ralph is wearing military boots and has a wee advantage, but still. It's not impossible that he lost a fraction, but I don't think he's under 180 today, so maybe there's a fair chance he was nearer 181 in the 90's?
said on 18/Jan/15
@Sam and Arch Stanton: Even with his head tilted and clearly less footwear he looks no more than a hair shorter than Craig: Click Here
He'd look a tad taller if he stood with similar posture to Craig, and that's with a footwear disadvantage. Ralph's still pretty much 5'11, 5'10.75 at worst.
Sam said on 30/Dec/14
I think Fiennes is more a 5'10.5"-5'10.75" range guy, I'm more convinced that he was always a tad under the 5'11" mark. I don't think he's at an age yet where he's lost much height. Very similar height it seemed to Daniel Craig, but Craig may be have a bit extra footwear in general.
Sam said on 30/Dec/14
I am a fan of Baron Cohen (probably a much more pleasant guy off-screen than Norton is!) but I was enough with his manic, attempts to squeeze humor out of silly, phony accents when NO ONE else is speaking w/ them in these big movies after Sweeney Todd, Hugo & Les Mis, it's just a little tiresome IMO!
said on 4/Dec/14
Rob do you think he might have lost a bit now? He looks similar to Craig here
cole said on 4/Jul/14
@Arch Stanton: I don't think he looked 3 inches shorter than Brody in 'The Grand Budapest Hotel'. At times I saw about 1.5in, but I could be wrong as I payed more attention to the great dialogues than the heights... Ralph I think could be edging his way towards 5'10.5, but I'm not sure he's there already.
Arch Stanton said on 4/Jun/14
Norton was bad casting though Sam, it needed somebody like Sacha Baron playing that part with an Eastern European accent. Norton is too monotone American.
Arch Stanton said on 4/Jun/14
Absolutely superb at dark comedy in The Grand Budapest Hotel. Surprisingly great! One thing though, he looked much shorter than Adrian Brody, like more 3 inches than 1.
Sam said on 28/May/14
Rob, could you add Quiz Show, Strange Days, The English Patient, Red Dragon, In Bruges, Skyfall, The Grand Budapest Hotel and the Harry Potter films?
He's a really diverse actor and yes top knotch in Grand Budapest, I'm not a fan of some of the movies above though. I think it's possible he's really a strong 5'10" guy rounding up. Liam Neeson towers over him both in 90s and today and I thought he looked maybe a couple inches under Edward Norton in Grand Budapest.
cole said on 29/Apr/14
He was just brilliant in The Grand Budapest Hotel. Should get a mention at the top.
said on 4/Apr/14
These aren't the best examples but both show footwear. The first is with Daniel Craig and the second is with Jeremy Irvine.
He's certainly not much smaller than what you have him listed, but I'm thinking he's more in the 5'10.5" range. He's definitely not a full 5'11", even taking into account his habit of bending his neck. A good and refreshing thing I can say about him is that he doesn't appear height conscience in the least.
PJ said on 17/Feb/14
Saw in him NY SoHo a handful of years ago, a flat 5'10.
said on 6/Jan/14
He tends to lean and slouch when posing for pics, so I understand that he might appear under 5'11 at times to some people, but I am convinced he is 180 cm range when standing his tallest. And come on... "5'10 max"?
Rob what is the lowest you'd argue? Personally I wouldn't go under 5ft 10.75in at the moment. He's always appeared a solid 180 cm guy to me. In a few years he probably could dip to 179 cm range, but he doesn't seem to be there yet imo.
[Editor Rob: 180 I think is ok. He can though look 179 at times yeah]

178-179 for Ralph Fiennes and Jason Isaacs
Mike T said on 29/Nov/13
I'd say 5'10" max and 5'9.5 min. I met him once, I'm about 5'9" and he was a little taller than me. Sometimes he looked an inch taller than me and sometimes he looked a half inch taller than me which is not very noticeable.
5\'11\" said on 11/Oct/13
I'm 5'11 barefoot and everyone thinks I'm 6'1" and like no I'm 5'11".
Arch Stanton said on 9/Oct/13
Yeah he looks around 5'11" in Schindler's List.
cole said on 20/Aug/13
Ralph Fiennes would probably be one of my benchmarks for your legit 5'11 flat man.

Looked the same height as Daniel Craig in Skyfall. Maybe 1/4 in. taller at the most.

I think he is 5'10" (178 cm), because I saw him once and he was about my height (175 cm). He was just 2-3 cm taller.

Fiennes is a few inches taller now than Vanessa Redgrave, who is listed as 5'11" at her peak (she must be inches less these days):

two inches taller MAX in those butler/fiennes pictures...
said on 27/Sep/11
You know I'm starting to think all the heights on this sight are totally WAY OFF --there is no way f'n Ralph Fiennes is 5'11 if as you've also listed Gerard Butler is only 6'1!!! Gerard in all these pics looks at least 3 inches taller than Ralph --so either Gerard is 6'2-6'3 OR Ralph Fiennes is probably 5'10 --I'm inclined to believe that Gerard Butler is really tall cause he looks it. Check any of these pics --where in fact similar footwear but Gerard is slouching while Ralph is straight and Gerard STILL looks 3 inches taller! Click Here
Anna said on 3/Sep/11
I met him very briefly. I'd say 5'11" is spot on when he's out of character but can slouch heavily when acting.
The height thing is intentional in Schindler's List. That film is very carefully made so it's not a coincidence that an average guy looks so tall and Neeson looks like an absolute giant. I don't know if it was lifts or careful positioning and camera angles. It's symbolic, especially when Schindler falls on his knees and is surrounded by the Jews, being figuratively and literally on the same level, in the same situation they were.
Joe257 said on 11/Aug/11
Fiennes looked over 6 ft in Schindler's list, like around 6'2". I guess he must have been wearing huge boots with lifts in them. All of the German/Nazi actors (like Liam Neeson) in that movie looked really tall compared to the Jewish actors.
jtm said on 12/May/11
i am not sure about 5'11 but he has a better chance of being 5'11 than brad pitt or george clooney.

I think he could be a good 5´10" Bond (British style, from head to feet).
Taylor said on 26/Aug/07
Viper, its not that hard to believe - he just has really really bad height judgement. I suppose its something he never really thought about, so his guess work is crappy as a result.
Anyway, back to how tall Mr. Fiennes is.
Viper said on 22/Aug/07
Your 6-5 boyfriend thought he was 6-1? Thats hard to beleive. So he must have thought everyone was under 6-0 tall and lying by 5 inches as well, lol.
said on 21/Aug/07
A lot of people don't know how tall they are. There is a surprising amount of guessing and assuming. I worked with a girl who swore up and down she was 5'7", and she was at least 2 or 3 inches shorter than me (I am 5'7"). I knew for a fact what my height was because I had been measured the year prior. We measured her, and she's 5'4.5". The same goes for my boyfriend - who had mentioned in passing that he was around 6'1"...which left me almost speechless, because just by the look of him one would guess he is at LEAST 6'4". About a month after that he went to the doctor for a general check up and asked to be measured - and sure enough, he was marked at 6'5".
So I'm guessing that half of you assume your height rather than know it, and considering that these people we're talking about are celebrities and their image is important, they probably have these sort of things checked.
[Editor Rob: lots of celebrities have physicals for their line of work, which should include getting measured...but yeah, some average joe's might never have been measured or actually give a damn about height, so they might guess.]

At least 5-11 in my opinion.
Melvin said on 12/Jul/07
He isn't 5ft 8. He has very poor posture because he has played meek/troubled characters for many years. That makes him look average. Fully stretched out Ralph Fiennes is 5ft 10 or little more.
Melissa07 said on 22/Jun/07
I've stood beside Ralph Fiennes several times at various stage doors and he is definitely 5'7 - 5'8 and gorgeous beyond words.
Mr Mayfair said on 10/Apr/07
No way! The Fiennes boys are really not that tall. Rafe was an odd choice for Der Kommandant in Schindler who in real life was at least six foot and around 200lbs. Try 5.9 and 150lbs.

He's always appeared a slim well proportioned 5'9" to me!Such a build easily gives the illusion of more height on screen.I have a friend who could double for him and he's 175cms .
[Editor Rob: There can be some truth to the nearer 5ft 10 that Frank2 was saying, but look at this guy's posture half the time in photos, its not great.]
Viper652 said on 7/Sep/06

I met Ralph Fiennes in Hay-on-Wye in 1997. I was 5ft 6" at the time, not wearing heels and he was easily 5 inches taller than me. I'd say he was pretty much 5ft 11"- no dispute from me- and I'm really suspicious about the whole celebrity-height-elevation thing.

Ofcourse, Frank2! Ralph is only 5'2", but they use the "frog angle" during filming him...
He's definitely taller than 5'10.5 - 5'11 Tom Sizemore, dammit !

Hi, I'm looking "strange days" right now. Ralph Fiennes compared to 5'11" Tom Sizemore is definitely taller. Rob, please correct his height to 182cm.
[Editor Rob: I was going to come back to this guy. He can look from 178-182cm. Yes, he can look a little closer to 6ft, certainly in some films he can look near 182...for the moment I would give him 181]
