That sounds fair Ed, but I just can't see a 5ft11.5 man claim 6ft3 as his height. It sounds ridiculous! I don't know where or when he claimed to be that tall. Actually he might've been 6ft flat by the time of his death and say 6ft1.25 at his peak. But he did look the tallest of the Harry Potter cast. He looked slightly taller than Alan Rickman who is listed here as 6ft1. Aswell, I think Harris was quite far from skinny. I did look to have a similiar build to Sean Connery. You know, broad shouldered, well-built guy with good posture and a solid walk. That sortive made him a little imposing at times on screen. Ed(1) says on 11/Oct/08
Hugh, don't worry man, we just have differences of opinion! That's what this site is for, debating and discussing height.
As for Harris, I'm just going off of both Glenn and Frank2's estimates, as well as what I've seen from his films. His thin physique only added to his height, so it's natural for him to look taller. But I'd bet his footwear also added to this illusion as he got older.
My guess is 6ft0.5 peak, and 5ft11.5 in his later years. It's not entirely impossible he was 6ft1 peak, and 6ft at the time of his death either. Either way, you throw on some cowboy boots or other heeled boots, and a 5ft11.5-6ft man is now 6ft1-6ft1.5. Or in his youth 6ft2-6ft2.5! Add this together with a thin physique, and you can see why claims of 6ft3 and taller could have happened!
Hugh says on 10/Oct/08
Ed, I do not want to make another enemy. I've already made enemies with Viper and Lenad. If you think Harris stood no taller than 6ft0.5 at his peak, you are entitled to your opinions but I still stand by my claim that Harris was 6ft1 flat by the time of his death and was 6ft1.25-6ft1.5 in his prime. Hugh says on 10/Oct/08
Sorry Ed, Harris could very well have been close to 6ft2 when he was younger. He was very close in height to Connery. In the Harry Potter Movies he looked the same height as Alan Rickman who I beleive stands 6ft1. 186-187cm was his peak height I think. Ed(1) says on 8/Oct/08
Hugh, both Glenn and Frank2 saw Harris in the 5ft11+ range later in his life! Harris might have been 6ft0.5 once when he was young man, but in his old age he shrunk! 6ft1.5 is way too high!
As for Connery, I don't think he was over 6ft1.5 at his peak, and these days he's probably around 6ft-6ft0.25 if he stood up straight!
Lastly, I don't buy Ford as a legit 6ft1 in 1992 at 50 years of age! He already by that point had done the first 3 Indy films, Blade Runner, and the Star Wars films, and had severly messed up his back, knees, and overall body doing stuntwork. I'm sure he suffered some height loss by this time. Hugh says on 8/Oct/08
Connery was 6ft2.5 at his peak. 5ft11.5 is ridiculous for Harris even by the time of his death. I can buy 6ft1.5 as his peak. Aswell he was taller than Harrison Ford in Patriot Games. Ford at that time was 6ft1. In the Harry Potter films he towered over everyone. He was still 6ft1. A 5ft11.5 man claiming 6ft3 is stupid. Ed(1) says on 7/Oct/08
Hugh, I don't know if I'd go so far as 6ft2 for Harris! I'd say 6ft0.5-6ft1 tops peak, and 5ft11.5 by the time of his death. If Connery was 6ft1.5 peak, this would make sense for Harris looking close to him in size. Hugh says on 6/Oct/08
Harris was near in height to Connery so might have been 6ft2 or close in his prime. 6ft1 flat by the time of his death. Mister Lennon says on 3/Oct/08
Harris was about 6'1 or close. He was a little shorter than his all time buddie Peter 0`toole , who was 6'2 or close at peak. Ed(1) says on 3/Oct/08
Harris did look taller then Harrison Ford in Patriot Games(1992), so 6ft1 could be accurate since I peg Ford at near 6ft in the early 90's, and around 5ft11.25-5ft11.5 now. I wouldn't rule out some sort of a lift though for Harris from time to time, or at least bigger heeled boots. If I remember correctly he wore cowboy boots in Patriot Games, and was super skinny as well adding to the effect of him being a lot taller.
The only scenario that makes sense if Harris was only 5ft11.5, is that Ford was the same height in Patriot Games, but wore normal heeled dress shoes to Harris' 2" heeled cowboy boots. This would account for the height difference! Lenad says on 2/Oct/08
No Hugh I think he was at best 6'0. He was towered by Gary Cooper who was only 6'3. Hugh says on 26/Sep/08
Harris was never 6ft3 but 6ft2 is possible at his peak. adam says on 23/Sep/08
He looked a little bit shorter than Gene Hackman in The Unforgiven. Hackman is a solid 6-2 and Harris looked like an inch shorter so... Frank2, how can the man be only 5-11½ if he was barely shorter than Gene Hackman?? And dont tell me that Hackman is six feet even or something like that...
Also people are saying below that Harris was taller than Harrison Ford! Ford is at least six feet even, could be an inch more. What do you say about that, boy? Hugh says on 1/Sep/08
Harris was 6ft1 or 6ft2. He was near Connery and Hackman. 187cm. Lenad says on 1/Aug/08
He never struck me as being 6'1 and no way in hell 6'3. 6'0 was the most I ever saw him at. Zap says on 4/Jul/08
I had a "few" drinks with Mr Harris at Love Field in Dallas, then found out we were sitting next to each other on a flight to Oklahoma City (he was going around the country doing Camelot). In my happy mode, I asked if anybody had told him he looked just like a miniature Richard Harris. That's when he told me he was Richard Harris. One of my many foot-in-mouth moments. I'm 6'1" and he wasn't. He said the biggest mistake he had made was taking money instead of points for Raid on Entebbe. Richard says on 7/Apr/08
Yeah he was 6'1 though some claim him to be 6'3 which I don't think! Very handsmome man in his day and a terrific actor. Watch Camelot if you know what I mean! JOSH says on 15/Mar/08
Whoever said that below is a liar. Harris was alwas over 6ft. When he was younger he claimed 6ft 3 in his biography. In the harry potter films he still looked a solid 6ft 1 to me. He towered over to many co stars to look below 6ft. I think that fool made that comment up below. JOSH says on 15/Mar/08

I remember a Parkinson Show a few years ago when he said he was just under six feet tall and they'd used camera angles to make him look bigger for a film where he played a Rugby player - "This Sporting Life" I think it was called. He seemed to be just honestly talking about the way in which the camera can create a certain impression, so it seems a pretty honest comment. Gonzalo says on 18/Dec/07
He looked taller than Harrison Ford in Patriot games I think it was. But he looked clearly shorter than Sean Connery in Robin and Marian, though he was slouching. He could be 1´85. A lift wearer? Frank2 said he was four inches shorter than Gary Cooper.
HArd to pin this guy glenn says on 16/Dec/07
i agree with brabeck.i used to see this guy walking around talking to himself in his pajamas outside.5-11ish.maybe he was taller in his prime. Kevin says on 15/Dec/07
I was lucky enough to meet and even talk to him for quite a while probably a couple hours not long before he died it was while he was shooting the 2nd harry potter movie anyway I would give him about 6'1'' Joshua says on 19/Oct/07
So he has claimed 6ft 3 and no one believes that.... =D
Well in Unforgiven he did look at least an inch shorter than Gene Hackman. marlon says on 20/Sep/07
He looked 6ft 1 through most of his career. He could have been a bit below that when he was much older like in the harry potter movies. Brabek says on 31/Jul/07
I saw Richard Harris in Canada in 1979. He was about 5 ft 11. Funkysmell says on 7/May/07
He described himself as 6'3" in his biography. Anonymous says on 5/May/07
was he 6'1 until he died? Josh says on 26/Apr/07
HARRIS WAS ABOUT 6FT OR A BIT OVER.
HE WAS THE SAME HEIGHT SA ROGER MOORE IN THE WILD GEESE. Glenn says on 3/Sep/06
Weird dude.saw him walking around in his Pajamas in the street talking to himself. Susan says on 3/Sep/06
In different scenes of movies, Richard looks tall and some he looks a bit short. I bet they put lifts in his shoes when he needed to be taller. I know that Charleton Heston and Richard Harris hated eachother while making Major Dundee, so it might have been a power struggle. But in Camelot, he does look smaller. I saw him on stage playing King Arthur but thought he looked about 5'11. Since I am a HUGE fan, I will always think of him as a tall man. Anonymous says on 25/Jul/06
I'm guessing that he was anywhere from 6' to 6'2''. He was of slim build although broad shouldered and this could perhaps make him look taller than he was. I don't buy the stuff about him being 5'11'' though. Gotxo says on 21/Jun/06
Piwo81:
Interesting pictures, Harris is almost taller than Brosnan, so the Irish is not over 6'1".
Taller than Mckellen (who's not over 5'11").
Finally taller than Moore, in the shot with camoufflage clothes Harris is slouching a bit, yet his shoulder line is above Moore's.
This makes sense, Frank has said Niven was 5'11" and Moore an inch taller, has spotted recently Moore at 5'11", so i think he was in the 6'-6'1" range (Glenn said he was 6'1" back on '90s though).
Harris appear to be barely taler than Moore, so 6'1" sounds right to me. Frank2 says on 7/May/06
I seriously doubt Mitchie is my height. Ron Burns says on 5/May/06
I stood right next to Richard around 1980. He was well over 6'0" then. But perhaps that was due to his boots. He toward over his model gf then - Ann Turkel, who has to be 5'10" or so. Frank2 says on 29/Apr/06
When O'Toole did Lawrence I do remember reading where one critic complained that O'Toole was miscast since he was six feet and was playing the role of a man who was about 5'4". Then I started reading his height increasing way up to 6'3". I suspect that O'Toll was never more than 6'1". He was and still is a stick. Jason says on 28/Apr/06
That's weird Harris struggled with 6'0'' and he was billed as tall as 6'4''. Far out!
Frank, do you think 6'1'' could have been possible for Peter O'Toole? I'd previously gathered he wasn't 6'3'' or even 6'2'', but I would have pegged him at a solid 6'1''. Picture says on 28/Apr/06
He wasn't much shorter than Gene Hackman in Unforgiven.
In 1995 Hackman was still 1.5 inch taller than John Travolta. Editor Rob says on 27/Apr/06
"My memories of him today....physically he was huge - well past six foot tall and extremely broad shouldered", from sex death and the movies biography. Picture says on 26/Apr/06
He is dead, you can give him is peak height just like Brando Mikex says on 18/Apr/06
When he was interviewed for a part in a film with Doris Day the producers were expecting a Rock Hudson 6'4'' guy. This was because they'd seen Harris looking massive with dyed black hair in This Sporting Life. But that film was cast with small people to make Harris look bigger. Harris himself described the producers shock on seeing him fair haired and barely 6 ft. However I've seen him on tv and he could look rather tall on occasion. Glenn says on 28/Mar/06
I saw Richard way back in pajamas and slippers talking to himself on a NYC street.he looked 5-10,5-11.youron the money with that one Frank! Frank2 says on 27/Mar/06
I was talking with an old friend who used to be an extra and he swears that Harris was his height and my friend is 5'10". I think Harris was about 5'11" to 5'11-1/2". But one thing is for sure and that's he was never 6'1".
Sean was probably 6'2" or close to it when he was younger. By the time he did a film at Fox circa early 2000's he was only about an inch taller than me. And once again I'm 5'11". larry says on 24/Mar/06
Saw WRECK OF THE MARY DEARE too recently on TCM (love that channel). I saw at least 3" difference between Harris and both Cooper and Heston. Cooper and Heston were built VERY differently, but looked the same height within 1 cm at most. Harris was a good 2" less than Sean Connery in THE MOLLY MCGUIRES and in ROBIN AND MARION. Frank2 says on 17/Mar/06
Nope. No way was Richard Harris 6'1". Not a chance in hell was he 6'1". I'm watching The Wreck of the Mary Deare and in scenes with 6'3" Gary Cooper, Harris is a good four inches shorter. Both men are wearing what appear to be normal shoes. And the disparity is consistent. It's the same in close up's as well as in the long shots. Unless Coop was actually 6'5" I'd say Harris was no more than 5'11". And as far as O'tool, he's about 6', not the 6'2" we read about. He's just so thin that he looks taller. peter says on 1/Jan/06
I met Peter O'Toole in about 1988.I am 6 feet tall and he did not impress me as being a taller man. If anything I thought of him as smaller. Mikex says on 27/Dec/05
I think it can be difficult to compare the heights of actors in a movie to say who is taller unless there is a big difference like 3 or 4 inches or so. I think it depends on how the actors stand and the camera angle etc. Also I guess that directors sometimes try to make the leading man look big in comparison to the rest of the cast. On the subject of Harris, I don't know if he was ever 6'3'' but I reckon he was 6'2'' in his prime. sam says on 15/Dec/05
Peter O'Toole's official height as a young man was 6'3". I don't think Harris was ever 6'3" or close to it and was roughly 6'1" as a young man (in Major Dundee, Charlton Heston, 6'3", had a couple of inches on him). Mario Nariano says on 16/Nov/05
Nah he looked even in his 70s 6 ft 1.
And yes he was an inch shorter than Peter Otoole who was 6 ft 2 at his peak, not shorter or taller. I think that Harris was a lucky guy who dind't lose height. John says on 10/Nov/05
O'Toole was never 6'3 but 6'1 or 2 at most. Watching "The Wild Geese" on DVD, I can't believe Harris was ever more than 6 feet even. McFan says on 18/Aug/05
I agree that Richard Harris was never 6'3. Peter O'Toole was 6'3 and he was always an inch taller than Harris. |
