i always saw 6ft for him.even 2 years ago.but you know what, you guys are right.he can look 6-1 in photos.except to make it more confusing, hetfield has never looked 6-1 to me.6-2 to 6-3!!!.even recently! and ian gillan i have to change my mind on the 6ft.he was indeed 6-1 when i saw him recently. AshnarLynx says on 27/Jan/08
He looks just as tall as Hetfield in a mag pic I've seen of them. Hetfield is reported as 6'1 by all sources. But this was in 1992.
topher says on 5/Dec/07
he looks about 6' 6' 1" something like that... and tony iommi is 59 he was born in 1948 so he will actually be 60 this february Nevermind says on 3/Oct/07
I've seen Iommi billed as 6'2" in couple of places. In he's twenties he might have been that tall. Nowadays I'd say 6' to 6'1". Has he said himself he is 6'? He looked tall and skinny in the 70s and just big dude in the 80s and early 90s. Anonymous says on 16/Jul/07
Well I'll take your word for it because I can't see his feet. I met him this year but he was sitting down. He claims to be 58 years old but I have heard he is actually 65. His voice was amazing at the New York show this year. Iommi looks 6'1-6'2 in that picture. glenn says on 10/Jul/07
your right on all,but dio is 5-4 in heels. Anonymous says on 10/Jul/07
Ronnie James Dio looks 5'4, Vinny Appice looks 5'9 1/2, Jeff Pilson looks 5'10 and Tracy G looks 5'6 John says on 6/Jul/07
The bottom picture, where glenn is wearing a leather jacket, theres Dio and who are the other guys, there not the real Black Sabbath lrua says on 5/Jun/07
I have been a Sabbath fan for years, I always thought he was a tall guy but I saw him at Prince's Trust concert 2002. He looked 5'10" standing near Prince Charles, I think he is 5'11" though, keep in mind he wore big boots in concert in the late '70's / '80's glenn says on 22/Feb/07
yes.1992 and 1994.17 years of pics with me on this site.i look different in all the pics. Dehumanizer says on 21/Feb/07
The man in the top picture is glenn? He looks different from the picture below. Middle-sized Cat says on 23/Jan/07
John Sykes has been unlucky in some ways. Joined Lizzy just before they split; was fired from Whitesnake just before '1987' broke sales records; and Blue Murder just missed the big-time. But he's a great musician. Glenn says on 22/Jan/07
Rowan could be 5-11 now.thanks for the info.I didnt know about his new project.remember Teddy Cook?5-6, 5-7 Id say.I think he was later in a band with people I knew.Id bump into him.John Sykes-a friend of mine described him at 6-3! I met him,and in sneakers seemed 5-11,like you say.this same friend said Ewan Mcgregor was real short, when he seemed 5-9.5 to me.this friend is 5-6. D. Ray Morton says on 20/Jan/07
I forgot about Rowan Robertson. What the hell happened to him? Middle-sized Cat says on 20/Jan/07
Agree with that. Shred just got too unemotional - like an exercise, if you like. A lot of shredders seem to turn to a blues-style as they get older. The shredder I DO like is John Sykes - now there's a guitarist! Quite tall, too - 5'11", same as Scott Gorham? Glenn says on 19/Jan/07
I love Entombed by the way.they went from death metal to death rock.a new, hardly played genre.Rowan,I think was 5-10 or so when I met him in 1990.I loved and didnt mind shred.blues was too boring for me.you need all styles, otherwise music would be dull. Middle-sized Cat says on 19/Jan/07
Anon,
I remember Rowan Robertson. He was very good indeed, and quite like Viv in some ways. Am surprised he hasn't been heard of since his Dio days. But I liked the simplicity of Tracy G. Shred was getting too shredtastic - I blame Yngwie. When Malmsteen played 1000 miles-per-second guitar on a cover of Purple classic Lazy - an uptempo R&B number! - I thought it had gone too far. (And now he slags off Morse because he wishes Purple had chosen HIM... Thank God they didn't!) Anyway, that's my take on it - RJD fancied a change, and Strange Highways / Angry Machines showed that change.
Glenn,
I reckon '98, yes. We saw Dio in '97, at London Astoria (which was quite funny; our queue was next to the queue for Entombed next door, and I kept seeing people I knew!). I thought Tracy was good then. If he'd murdered the Rainbow songs, I'd have been annoyed, but he didn't. Mob Rules was his best moment, perhaps. Sure he's an Iommi fan.
On thread again - Rowan looked pretty tall, and must've grown since! :) Glenn says on 19/Jan/07
I meant to say Tracy sucked on his last tour in 1998.that was his last,no? yes,George Lynch is 5-11. Anonymous says on 19/Jan/07
Tracy was never that right guitarist for DIO I mean the last guitarist to play on a DIO album before Tracy joined was that virtuoso Rowan Robertson who was 16 at the time.(Check out the guitar solo in Walk On Water off the Lock Up The Wolves album for some real shred!) Tracy was the opposite of Rowan and was a pretty simple guitarist. A funny story is toward the end of his tenure in DIO is Tracy screwed up the intro The Last In Line and Ronnie gave him a dirty look. Tracy was fired not long after. If Pilson is close to 5'10 than George Lynch has to be atleast 5'11. Glenn says on 18/Jan/07
Yes,Pilson is 5-9ish,maybe,maybe 5-10.Cat-but Tracy sucked on the 1998. Middle-sized cat says on 17/Jan/07
Am surprised to see that Tracy G doesn't look much taller than RJD. Anyway, he got a lot of abuse from people when he was in Dio (the band), which annoyed me. He's a fine guitarist. Anyone who can play Mistreated well has to be good. Anonymous says on 17/Jan/07
Pilson looks close to 5'10 there and Ronnie looks atleast 5'4 there. Middle-sized Cat says on 9/Jan/07
Glenn,
Pretty sure that was Donato. Didn't know EVH played on their demos! What a commendation. The hot news is that DLRoth has rejoined VH. Glenn says on 9/Jan/07
Dave Walker or was it Danato was the singer on my White Tiger album with Mark St John of KISS.none other than Edward Van Halen played on those demos.as he also did with Kiss Creatures LP.Im not big on Ozzy either.he didnt write much.hows the Tony Martin solo cds? Middle-sized Cat says on 8/Jan/07
Whatever happened to Dave Walker? He was the first replacement for Ozzy, when he left for just a few weeks! I think this was '78. Walker was ex-Savoy Brown (I think), and a fellow Brummie. And what about David Donato, who replaced Gillan in the Sabs for a few days?
Must admit, am not very keen on Ozzy, but that Sabotage album IS excellent. Glenn says on 8/Jan/07
Yes,I know of Martin well.saw him in Sabbath.never met.I imagine 5-8.how is that project? is there a cd? Middle-sized Cat says on 7/Jan/07
Glenn,
To bring this full-circle, Tony Martin played for a while in the band Murray has with Moody & Marsden (M3). His voice is a little Dio-ish, though not as powerful (few are as powerful as RJD). This new H & H venture could be fun. MOB RUUUULES!! Glenn says on 7/Jan/07
I dont if that last post came up as anonymous.that was me.by the way I was the last fan to meet Ray and I was at his memorial and hung out with his mother.trivia? if you think you know so much, who played on the Cross Purposes demos and obviously had a small uncredited role in the writing.this isnt just for petty Tyr(Sabbaths worst LP),its for all to impress me. Glenn says on 7/Jan/07
Does it make a difference Tyr? I know who Im talking about.thats a little petty.Im sure I know and own more Sabbath than you.hows that for petty?.oh yeah,Cat,Neil does look 6-4,6-5 in some pics.mustve seen him sitting down.they all wear huge heels though.Murray mustve been 6-7 at times! Middle-sized Cat says on 6/Jan/07
A lot of people think Ian Gillan is called Ian Gillian! Roger Glover's daughter apparently IS called Gillian, so Gillian Glover must get people even more confused. Glenn says on 4/Jan/07
I know May is 6-2.gives a taller impression with his hair and Clogs, the equivalent to womens heels. Glenn says on 3/Jan/07
Strange how Brian May gave me a 6-3 impression, and Neil Murray didnt.I was in a hotel lobby with those 2,and Cozy Powell.hope I find the pics.May,had Clogs on. Middle-sized cat says on 2/Jan/07
Glenn,
Honestly, Neil Murray is huuuge. When Tommy Vance, legendary DJ, interviewed him in '87, he said: "You must be the tallest man in rock'n'roll!" With Whitesnake, he was way taller than Lord, Coverdale and Micky Moody, all big guys. He played with Brian May later, and was possibly taller even than him! Only Vandenberg, in Whitesnake after Murray, was taller - 6'5", apparently. Glenn says on 2/Jan/07
Geoff was tall.but I remember more 6-2,6-3.and Neil Murray I cant remember.6ft? 6-4 is way too extreme.Ray Gillan and now Ian Gillan somewhere in these photos? this is getting comical.thats me.Glenn.guess your not a Dio fanatic.thats Tracy G(short stocky).then thats 5-9ish Jeff Pilson from Dokken(reddish blond). Middle-sized Cat says on 1/Jan/07
Thought the lower picture was Glenn with '97 Dio (the band). Blonde guy is Jeff Pilson, and Tracy G. is next to RJD. That was an awesome line-up. Tony Iommi is hard to guage. Neil Murray, who went from Whitesnake to The Sabs via Vow Wow (remember them?), is 6'4", yet didn't tower over Iommi. Vow Wow are a Tokyo-based band; whwn Murray stepped in, all photos featured him standing well behind the other 4! Glenn says on 1/Jan/07
Tony always seemed 6-2,in boots.Ray Gillan? how is that possible.I met him many times too.dont remember height on him.at least 6ft.always slouched and had boots too. Glenn says on 31/Dec/06
Thanks Danimal! I appreciate it. Danimal says on 30/Dec/06
Here's the link to EVERY MP3 Ronnie recorded from the late 50's up until 1973: Click Here
Enjoy!! Glenn says on 30/Dec/06
Cat,Im not into live albums in general, especially when they repeat songs.Bain is 5-6,5-7.not sure of the others. Glenn says on 29/Dec/06
I never heard the Aqualung.I like from Elf on.not too much before. Middle-sized cat says on 29/Dec/06
Glenn,
There's also a series of 4 Rainbow shows from '76, with Bain and Carey, on CD, all from Germany. Both Live Onstage and Live in Germany used portions of these shows, but these are unedited and remastered, etc. I think Rainbow with Dio and Powell were as good as Purple! (Carey is 5'8, Bain around same. I think. I did prefer David Stone (5'9"?) to Tony Carey, who was just a little too 'in your face'; Bain and Daisley are both excellent. Actually, just bought Wild Horses' 2nd album, Stand Your Ground, on lp, for £1! Long live charity shops! Off to hear it now. (Robbo - 5'8"? Lynott was a lot taller, Gorham a fair bit taller, Downey a bit shorter.) Danimal says on 29/Dec/06
Yeah Glenn, I have Everything he's done PRE-Elf as well, from 1957-1973. I really only started liking his style when he became more aggressive in 1971, when performing Aqualung and War Pigs, among others. I think it was Live at the Bank in '71 or '72. Glenn says on 29/Dec/06
I have all his 60s DooWop too.need to get that Munich DVD. Glenn says on 28/Dec/06
I love all Rainbow era.big fan of Graham Bonnet(5-10) and Joe Lynn Turner (5-5).I love Elf.in 2000,Dio was trying to reform Elf and Rainbow.Blackmore remained silent. Middle-sized Cat says on 28/Dec/06
Anyone seen the new Rainbow DVD from Munich in '77? It was quite a show. Blackmore was arrested in Austria 2 nights before - he beat up a bouncer who'd been hitting a 12-year-old girl (what a scumbag!) - and was only allowed out to play the Munich show. It's a stormer. The bonus interviews are great, and the 3 promos from '78 - mimed, except for Dio's vocals - show Dio at his absolute peak. Gates of Babylon is frightening. I reckon his best moments outside of Rainbow are the 2nd Elf album (Carolina County Ball), Mob Rules, and Last in Line. Oh, and Last in Live. Danimal says on 28/Dec/06
Glenn, I completely agree with you. Killing of the Dragon was okay, but his 3 post Angry Machines albums were shit compared to what he was doing in the 90's with Tracy G. He wanted to regain his fanbase by singing about Dungeons and Dragons again. Glenn, did you listen to any post Dio Rainbow albums and if so, what's your opinion on them? How about Elf? Glenn says on 28/Dec/06
I didnt care for Master of the Moon and Magica.Magica was his worst for me.Killing the Dragon was ok. Danimal says on 28/Dec/06
Live at Last was a KILLER live album. Saddly, Dio's latest 2 Live albums PALE in comparison to everything he has done before. Aside from Heaven and Hell, Mob Rules, Holy Diver and Last in Line (4 amazing albums), I LOVE Dehumanizer, Strange Highways and Angry Machines even more. He had such anger and power in his vocal delivery from 1992-1998. He had been on a steady decline ever since. I guess that would be normal for a 64-66 year old man. Glenn says on 27/Dec/06
Mob Rules is the best of all with Dio for me.Holy Diver solo.tough, maybe Strange Highways.I love Angry Machines almost as much.maybe, maybe Geezer was 5-7 in his prime.Glenn Hughes Im guessing is 5-8 barefoot.he wears crazy platform 5 inch heels constantly. Middle-sized cat says on 27/Dec/06
Merry Christmas, guys!
I once read that Tony was 6'2", and he was a bit taller than Ian Gillan, 6'1".
On a related theme, did you see the picture of Hughes and Coverdale in Classic Rock? They were at the awards, and Glenn actually looked taller!
Glenn, would love to answer Danimal's question re. those Dio albums, but he asked you! Could I just say that I loved that Tracy G. era? Ta. Saw them at Astoria, London, in '97. RJDio does NOT like stage invaders, as some mad mosher discovered. Danimal says on 27/Dec/06
Glenn, did you prefer Angry Machines or Strange Highways? Also, between Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules, which did you prefer? Do you think it's possible that Geezer was closer to 5'7" in his prime? Glenn says on 27/Dec/06
Thanks D.Keep in mind Dio always has big heels.Carmine Appice was 6ft in his prime.Vinny is 5-10ish.maybe he is 5-11.Strange Higways and Dehumanizer were both underated.2007 is the biggest Sabbath year yet.2 Ozzy albums,1 Sabbath album with Ozzy,3 new Sabbath songs with Dio,a new Dio album, tour with Dio and sabbath, and 40 anniversary tour in 2008.whew. Danimal says on 27/Dec/06
Hey Glenn, f**ing awesome pics man. I've been digging out my Sabbath albums as of late (just listening to Into the Void right now). I have read many places that Iommi WAS 6'2" and I he has stated that himself at times.
As for Dio (the Strange Highways album was killer btw, as was Dehumanizer from 1992 (brutal heavy)), I believe that he is at least 5'3". He claims 5'4". In that pic, I see 5", not 6". Vinny looks to be about 5'10-5'11". What do you give him? Glenn says on 25/Dec/06
MERRY XMAS EVERYONE!!! Glenn says on 25/Dec/06
I always thought Iommi was 6-1.and he could be.but Im with Rob,cause he had black boots on and I had the flatest sneakers, plus I think I was 5-7 then.yes, thats 5-6 Geezer.I have 2 other photos with me and those two together.thats the Dio lineup from 1994.Jeff Pilson(5-9) from Dokken on the far left,Vinny Appice(5-10) from Black Sabbath,Dio(5-2),Tracy G(5-5). Anthony says on 25/Dec/06
Iommi looks 6'1 or more. And yeah, Sabbath are one of the best. Rob, the guy in the top pic I think is Geezer Butler. Not sure on the others.
As a side note, Merry Christmas is everybody! Glenn says on 25/Dec/06
Greatest band ever!
