So, my mother is 5’3 (161 CM) bare feet
I’m not sure about my father’s height though, he has claimed 5’10 (178 cm) he has also claimed as high as 181 cm (5’11 1/4)
What do you think?

@Nik Ashton:

No offense, but aren't you like 5'7? I can't fathom how you can be the tallest in any situation aside from being around children or short women only.
Triplescrew said on 3/Feb/20

5'10" IS above average objectively speaking in the vast majority of the world. If you are above 5'10" at bedtime then you're pretty much an inch above the average height of young white guys in the United States.

More and more I believe height averages are inflated by morning height measurements. If more guys were like Rob and listed their usual low as their height, the average height in the U.S. might even dip into upper 5'8" territory (like 5'8.75"). There's no way 50% of guys are taller than 5'10" at night.

@ Ezequiel - IMAOI on many many occasions 5’11” should be deemed to be the start of the tall range! Overall I think it should be seen as being tall but it’s all about opinion! There is no definite right answer!

There are plenty of times where you can feel tall at 5’10” but there are plenty of times where you have to be 6’2” to feel tall too!
Nik Ashton said on 2/Feb/20
@ Mark O’ Connor - You will virtually always feel tall at 6’2” - 6’3”, it’s hard to say exactly where in that range! It may be a fraction of an inch either side of that range for some people!

Greg said on 2/Feb/20
@c-mo 176.2cm Well I’ve been to Germany and being close to 5’11 I still felt above average, maybe even tallish I would say being ‘tall’ is very subjective the average in Germany isn’t that much higher than the U.S unless you guys have an influx of Nordic/Dutch people which I’m sure you don’t. There’s only a handful, also different people have different proportions that can make them look taller or shorter. The average for men in Germany might be like a weak 5’10 so 5’9.75” which sounds about right for me.
Progking said on 2/Feb/20
@c-mo 176.2 cm yes among young men 185 cm would be around what i consider start of tall(or 6'2 in shoes). In general i think 6'0 is still tall and its a perfect height as you said. Its just more of a "sometimes tall" height from my experiences among young men.
c-mo 176.2cm said on 2/Feb/20

the thing is that you are not tall either imo . you are tallish . tall starts at 185cm or something like that . of course you are almost there and the difference is very little but there needs to be a line somewhere . in the past I said that 184cm at night would be the start of tall but I will change my opinion to 185cm . 182-184cm is tallish but not tall . I have a friend who is 184cm and he looks above average but not "tall" . another friend of mine is 189cm and he does look clearly tall and is taller than many if not most men

180cm is not tall at all . it is sometimes tallish yes no doubt but it is not tall enough to be tall ....unless one lives in a short country . but for europe as a whole ? no way . you guys should come to germany and see if you are tall at 5'11 - 6'0 will be surprised

I am about 176cm in the evening and my current shoes give 3.5cm so I will be 179.5cm in shoes in the evening which means that I will look and feel like a 177.5cm evening person wearing 2cm thick shoes so a legit 5'10 guy and I feel only average even at this and in some situations even below average at 5'10 being above average this is major wishful thinking . dont get me wrong is a good height and not short . but if you exclude 80 year old grandpas and people from very short countries then it is not above average at all . I dont understand why I should care how tall 80 year old men are or people from indonesia or whatever . I look at non elderly men of european and near eastern background to compare with myself . according to some peoples logic 5'8 is an above average height because the world average is 5'7 . congratulations but most of us live in the western world where the average for young men is a solid 5'10

anyway this is how I would rate heights :

5'9 = okay/decent

5'10 = good

5'11 = very good

6'0 = perfect

6'1 = perfect (but proportions become more important now because some men this height already look lanky and a good proportioned 5'11 maybe even 5'9-5'10 is better than a poor proportioned 6'1 . )

so yeah 6'0 - 6'1 is ideal

@Pov 6'2 guys can look a bit imposing though, i still would say 6'1, or close enough to it, is beginning of tall among young men. 6'0.5 is a nice height, you can say you are over 6'0 ;)

Canson said on 28/Jan/20
@Myself: judging where you are out of bed your extreme low is probably around 192.2-192.3 meaning your normal low would still be something like 192.7-192.9. You claiming 193 isn’t an issue if you fall that close to it. I don’t claim metric very often but if I did it would probably be 194. I fall closest to 193 at my extreme low 193.1 or 193.2 and 193.6-193.8 on a normal day.
Nik Ashton said on 28/Jan/20

HeightLossAtYoungAge said on 28/Jan/20

I know exactly what you mean. I've hit my low really early some days and thought I was shrinking, only to see that I didn't lose any more several hours later. Since you measured the 192.5cm very late at night and after a decent amount of activity, chances are good that you won't go under that barring any extreme circumstances.

If it makes you feel any better, an extreme low is a lot like morning height in the sense that you only measure it briefly. Sit down or lie down for a few minutes, and you'll be back to your normal low. Don't worry about how low you'd measure when you're placing a super heavy barbell on your back. That height is unnatural and represents disk compression that has been exacerbated by very high force you'd never normally experience.
Nik said on 27/Jan/20

A group, that represents people who have dwarfism, claims that dwarfism starts at 4'10 for both men and women. I don't think that's accurate. The height seems too tall for women and too short for men, and it's illogical to have the same starting height for both genders. It also doesn't take nationalities into account ("short" in one country is "tall" in another one). My own take is that dwarfism starts at 4'8 for women and 5'0 for men (with exceptions for some locations). What do you think?

Chris Bradley Brady said on 27/Jan/20
@ myself .... yeah still got back pain. Have measured using the can on the wall and a little container put on top of fridge with the can coming off that and I usually get 6 5/8 at a low. I have more 'play' in my spine now depending on how much sleep I get. If I only get 5 hours of sleep I feel pretty lousy and a 1/4 inch lower than usual If I get 8 hours I feel more like 6 3/4 at a low. Working out now really taxes me and I might drop another half inch if I do that.

I love all you guys on here and Rob and jenny but I sometimes need to take a break from measuring just because it stresses me out knowing I was taller before my injury and I am not hitting that anymore. Just trying to focus on work more often to keep my mind busy.

@Kent Davenport Well you would usually expect a guy to be at least 6’0-6’2 with parents of those heights, you’re basically my height I’m a little taller and my dad would have been 2.5 inches shorter than your dad peak and mom about 4.5 inches. However, genetics don’t always follow parents heights as I know a couple of guys who are like 6’3-6’4 and their parents are of average height. It’s not a bad height but many guys are going to wish they where taller like you’re above average. You might be able to squeeze another half inch to an inch if you’re lucky and reach 5’11 at your lowest. I think that 5’11-6’0 is better personally. You might have inherited someone else’s height, just try to sleep and eat well and excerise to max out ay your potential,

I've firmly decided that I would never want to be taller than 6'2. The reason is ridiculous, but important for a car lover :D : Mazda Miata isn't a great guy for guys over 6'2 (especially with roof top on) and it's one of the most fun cars to drive. It'd be a shame to miss the opportunity of driving such a legend due to height issues.

@Chris Bradley Brady
Yeah, I remember, why don't you try to measure yourself properly instead of guessing? Do you still have back pain?

@Christian @Johan
Yeah, I know i'm technically honest, but it's still frustrating seeing how far the 193 cm mark was when measuring...

The thing is that that probably isn't even my extreme low, and I am scared to think what that might be...I think that if I went to the gym to deaflift and squat I probably would never be able to measure over 192.5 at that stage...
On the other hand, since when I started measuring like almost 3 years ago I never measured anything close to what would be defined as an extreme low except but once: It happened when my usual low was about 191.4 cm and I measured about 190.5-191 cm after coming back home with some back pain.

In the US I'd say 185cm-186cm, a solid 6'1", would be solidly tall just about everywhere you go. 183cm-184cm is generally pretty tall, but there are many instances where it can feel more tallish/above average.

Editor Rob
On average, I think that is what you might end up...
Greg said on 25/Jan/20
@Progking I think we all have a different idea of whats tall/tallish/average. Assuming the average for Americans and Uk is about 5'9 for males anything over would be above average, I think you'd have to be a bare minimum of 5'10.5+ afternoon to be percieved as tallish especially with good proportions. a legit 6'0 is def tall. 6'1 is legit tall as well.
Greg said on 25/Jan/20
@Sean William Winter @Rob Tbf I think you could have ended up maybe between 5'11-6'0, 5'11 range would not be impossible, I know a few cases where guys with parents heights shorter than yours or mine ended up over 6'0+, Doctors are not often accurate with their predictions though because they are just estimating. For Example you and I close in height and I believe My dad was around 5'10/5'11 but my mom was 5'3.5ish peak perhaps nearer 5'4 however it just depends on your genetics, diet and excercise/sleep schedule because at one point I was barely sleeping so I think if I slept and ate better I could have ended up maybe 5'11.5ish
Greg said on 25/Jan/20
@Christian didn't you previously say that your mom is 6'0 and your dad was 5'10.5? Or where those peak heights because I could have sworn I remember you writing that to a user before when asked about your parents heights.
Progking said on 25/Jan/20

There's no way that the 17th percentile is 5'0", especially not in America and the west. It'd be more like 5'5"-5'6".

@ Myself
It's common to lose around 0.5cm at your extreme low, compared to your normal low. Even I lose around that, maybe even more (196.5 normal low, and 196 max extreme low, sometimes 195.9), but some lose less, like Rob at only 0.3cm. And even if you were 192.5 at your normal low, I still wouldn't hesitate claiming 193, as it's only 0.5cm. Even I claim 197 to people whenever I'm using metric, but at times also 196.

@Christian: I agree with what you said. Myself claiming 193 is really no different than me using Metric and claiming 194. Even in my case my extreme low is around 193 which I have no problem claiming either but on a normal day when I’m not at an extreme low it would be too low of a claim for me. I rarely use metric tho.
Luca said on 25/Jan/20
Dear Rob, on a normal day I tried to measure myself many many times in a row. I started from a height well above my extreme lowest measurement, and I ended up measuring something like 0.4 cm less than my actual extreme low (which I had reached after like 18 hours out of bed).
How could you explain this? Actual shrinkage or a bad posture,given by back tension/stress? I even noticed that if I stopped measuring for a very short amount of time I regained some mms
Editor Rob
That is a strange occurrence, I wonder if you really were not able to stand as tall as normal (at your usual lowest mark)...but then, shrinkage or spine alignment could have been off a little.

Hey Rob I am 17 and 2 months male and I measure exactly 5’10 and 5/8 in the morning sometimes 5’10.75 after lots of sleep and at night I am 5’10 or maybe an 1/8 of an inch give or take. I was just wondering if this is a good attractive height and what you think about it. Also I grew about 0.75-1 inch in the past year (mostly over the summer) My dad is like 6’1.5 and mom is about 5’8.5 but I’m pretty sure I inherited genes from some of my shorter family members (My grandpa was about 5’7-8 in his prime) What height do you think I might end up at?
random222 said on 24/Jan/20
Rob, I am wondering if i could reach a full 6ft low. As of right now I am 5'11 and 3/8" - 5'11 1/2" , 5'11.5" closer to lunchtime and 5'11 3/8" towards night time. After working out, I never dip below 5'11" and i seem to go around 5'11 1/8" temporarely after long periods of running/working out. I am turning 18 in april, however, I am 0.5-.75 inches taller than I was last year, and I grew roughly the same amount the year before. If I continued the same growth rate I would be approaching a solid 6 foot. How possible do you think this is? My parents aren't very tall, 5'10/11 for my dad and 5'5 for my mom. I thought I was done growing as of last year at 17 but I have seemed to pick up another half inch or so. Either way, at my current height, I am already very close to 6 foot.
Editor Rob
Could be 50/50, but if you just keep up exercise and good diet/sleep, then you at least provide the body the optimum conditions for any potential that is left.

Is there anyway he is near his claim? I mean proportionally I can’t even see him over 5’8 but I get that photos can be deceptive. Is it possible he’s 5’11 or maybe even 5’10 and claiming shoes?

From what very little I've seen he could be 5ft 10 range, but I really haven't seen enough, his body proportions might indeed make him look 5ft 8-9 at times.

Haven't measured that low in about 1.5 years...I wonder how low I could go after deadlifting or heavy squatting (I did train some abs during this day, but still)...I thought I was 192.60-75 cm minimum! Now I won't even feel that honest when claiming 193 cm...

Mathematically you're still 193 cm so you shouldn't doubt that claim at all. Most guys your size claim they are 6'5", 196 cm at least.

Eating 1 meal a day (AKA Intermittent Fasting) boosts your HGH levels, so if anything, his height might have benefitted from it, compared to the standard 3-4 meals per day. But it depends on how much he eats in that one meal though. He could be malnourished if he doesn't eat enough, which can stunt his growth.

Dad and mom are both about 5'11". I'm the tallest member on my dad's side (as far as I know of), and either the 2nd or 3rd tallest on mom's side, as I have a 6'7"-6'8" range cousin, and apparently a granduncle who was a legit 6'6", but I've never met him, so i can't confirm it for sure. There's hardly anyone in my family that's 6'5"+, but 6'4" and under are pretty common, as my grandfather and a couple of uncles on my mom's side are/were 6'4", and plenty of cousins and other uncles on mom's side in the 6'0"-6'3" range. My dad's side of the family is average heighted though. I think the tallest on his side is 6'3".

@Canson so i think I could gain off of 3000, but I’m really active so I burn off a lot of calories 4,000 would be ideal or maybe 3500. Now I’m not under weight I’m actually right where I need to be but I think moving up would be nice. Also yeah but I messed up because I still didn’t know what I wanted to do and have to retake classes (I’m supposed to be done already) changed majors 3 times and still am in debt but yeah it can be bad 😂 and I’m not even at a 4 year school yet, it’s good it worked out for you.
Greg said on 23/Jan/20
@Sean which guy are you referring too? I know one 5’11 or 5’10.75 5’10 7/8ths you tuber and I have to say it’s remarkable that guy reached 5’11 with parents that tall. I know I stunted my growth so if I had better sleep and diet I could have ended up taller. Food is only part of the equation. However with 5’4 and 5’8 parents 5’11 is more than you would expect. I have to ask my other 5’11 friend how tall his parents are, his mom was like 5’5-5’6ish I think not sure about his dad. I know his younger brother ended up a bit taller than him like 5’11.5-5’11.75 maybe even a weak 6’0.
Greg said on 23/Jan/20
@Bobby @Emil Yeah but I’m saying 1/2-1 inch isn’t that remarkable of a growth and he has potential he can report back and update us if need be. Yeah Bobby you’re a good example of late growth most guys generally are finished by 18/19.

Yup, but he mentioned that he only had open growth plates in his c2 and c3, and these vertebrae are located in the cervical spine (the part of the spine that stabilizes the neck). The amount of growth occurring in these vertebrae are minimal, as they barely constitute a mentionable amount of one's total height. We are talking about two cervical vertebrae not the femurs

So you hit 192.5cm at what is presumably your extreme low, and you feel bad about claiming 193cm? Come on dude, there are guys here who claim their morning heights. You're a legit 193cm in nearly anyone's eyes. It's also quite difficult to measure down to the exact mm, so you could still be in the 192.6-7 range.
Ellis said on 23/Jan/20
@Christian 6'5 3/8: How tall are your parents? I'm much taller then both my parents, my mom is 5'5 at a low, and I'm 6'8 when I get up. I'm the second tallest of people I know in my circles, I'm not going to reveal that, but including elementary school, middle school, high school, and college. The funny thing is that, when I started high school I was seven inches shorter than the tallest guy who is 6'9 (currently), and I definitely wasn't one of the tallest guys.
@Greg: When I'm barefoot, or with socks on, I look huge, but I wouldn't consider myself a giant, my feet are really long too lol. It's when I put sneakers on is when I get really insecure about it, also having a lanky walk doesn't help. I rival my doorframe barefoot, with shoes on I'm over it. My frame is a lot like Jack Skellington, when it comes to my shape, not muscle wise, I'm not a skeleton lol, I'm 193 pounds at the moment and bulking. When I go out I'm always the center of attention, I don't know if it is for my looks or my height. To put it in perspective, it feels like I'm walking a tightrope in public, because I get anxiety. Anyways, I think the word you are looking for is extremely tall, to get more technical, I believe a giant is a human ranging from 7 to 9 feet, perhaps for a female that range could be lowered, an argument can definitely be made there. This is just my opinion, I'm not taking a jab at you, if you think 6'6 is a giant I respect that. In my opinion 'giant' starts at around 7 feet, I remember when my dad got us seats to a knicks game in the 2017-18 season, and I got to see Kristaps Porzingis up close, mans was huge, he made me feel short, it was a row behind the court-side seats but before the game started I got to stand near the court, and saw all the players on the same level as them.

Rob, two questions - average height of the newest generation and the reason behind it.

1 - the new generation is getting taller. Would you say that now in the West an average 18-22 year old (who mostly done growing) male is about 5'10 (178) doctor's (morning) height?

2 - what is the reason behind it? I am told that more and more people are eating junk food and it certainly can't be healthy. Not sure how this would increase height. Of course, more people are into sports but then more into computer gaming with Twitch and whatnot. Also, I see taller guys with shorter parents - did their parents just not eat enough during their youth and now their kid fulfilled their genes?

Feel pretty short at 5'10 in an average country :-(
Editor Rob
Actually diet-wise, people might still eat junk, but they aren't as deprived as past generations. I do believe the overall diet/healthcare has helped average increases.
Sean william Winter said on 22/Jan/20
rob there a guy on youtube who whos parents mother 5'4 dad 5'8 hes 5'11 but think hed be much taller if he eat better as a teenager. does eating 3-4 meal day vs eating 1 meal day as teen has a huge impact on your maximum hieght?
Editor Rob
He's already reached above what a Doctor might have predicted.
There is such a thing as catch up growth, where the body - when it is being fueled well - goes through catch up growth.
Joaonova599 said on 22/Jan/20
Hi Rob why do some people consider 5ft 8in to be short but 5ft 10 is NEVER considered tall for a man. It's like any height even if just an inch or two under average is considered short however to be considered tall some would even stretch as far to say 6ft 1 is the minimum to be considered tall.
Editor Rob
Maybe they still think of 5ft 10 as within average, but have a cut off for how they view short. I don't know, it is strange how far more would call 8 short than 10-10.5 tall. Some sort of bias is attached to it.
Lucas3456 said on 22/Jan/20
Hi Rob, could the average male height be a bit shorter than 5ft 9 in London as it is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the world. I say this because at 6ft 3 inches are feel very tall but just solid tall.
Christian 6'5 3/8" said on 22/Jan/20

Chris Bradley Brady said on 21/Jan/20
@ myself I wouldn't worry too much about not being honest man since that is a lot of work in a day. I have done monstrous workouts where I am deadlifting and pumping 60 pound dumbbells for arms for two hours and I can tell by me eye level against my 5-8 fridge that I am getting close to 6 flat after typically measuring at least 6 3/4 at a low (im the guy who hurt my back last year playing bball and still haven't been hitting 6 7/8 range at a low since then).
Progking said on 21/Jan/20
@Greg yeah i was on a percentile calculator just now and considering the 5'9 average for canada/u.s 6'0 is near 86th percentile, which is plenty tall enough. I think 5'6 is near the 17th percentile, thats generally where i consider a guy start of short. If the young adult average is really 5'10 then you would have to be 6'0.75 or near 6'1 to be in the 83rd percentile. I think 6'0.5, or close to 6'2 in shoes, is the golden height.

@mrfunnyguy don’t always trust the internet that goes for anything. Also I just don’t buy that you say you feel barely average at 6’1 around Sweden that’s why a lot of people doubt your height claim because it doesn’t add up with how legit 6’1 guys feel walking around. There’s a guy who trains with me who might be a weak 6’1, he’s definitely over 6’0 but by how much is debatable he might be 6’0.75 but he’s easily the tallest in my class on most days. Despite the U.S being like an inch or so under Sweden even there I can’t imagine 6’1 being remotely close to average.

Christian 6'5 3/8" said on 20/Jan/20
4000 seems a lot for a guy your size, but I guess you need that much if you're attempting to bulk up. I on the other hand, don't need to gain weight, at least not for the moment, so I don't need to consume nearly that much. And yes, my metabolism is slower than the average person. It used to be faster when I ate 3-4 meals per day though.
Btw, it's nice that you're attending community college, instead of going straight to a 4 year college. I've seen a lot of cases where kids immediately go to 4 year colleges after graduating from high school, just to end up in debt and not figuring out what they exactly want to do. CC's not only helps you prepare your career better, but also saves you a lot of money. I kinda wished I went to a CC as well. But fortunately, I wasn't in debt, since I budgeted and saved up.

@Emil well I wouldn’t say unrealistic because someone good have different genetics of late growth so somebody squeezing out a last 1/2-1 inch isn’t that uncommon. Yes it does slow down towards the ends of the height cycle, however I know someone who grew a few inches at like 19/20 because the last time I saw him he was 5’11 range, I’m guessing like 5’11.25-5’11.5 and then he was 6’3 this was from like 17-20 so it could happen.

@Progking well that’s why I always say 6’0 is tall, a proper 6’0 guy will always look tall no matter what in most situations. I wonder what would qualify as 17th percentile probably like 5’0 or something as that’s very short for a guy.

hi rob, i am gonna tell you a cool Thing about height loos in elder people. My mother is 65 and was at her peak 175 in the afternoon and 176 in the morning. couple months ago i saw that she looked shorter than she usually does and meassured her. she was down to 174 or tiny fraction over. I told her that she needed more muscles in her back and baught a row machine to her ( very easy weights) and she have been doing 30 minutes on that around 2 times a week. now around 3 months later i noticed her posture have been better again. so i measured her again ( around 5 in the afternoon) and she was now 174,6. It may sound strange but she really have gained back 0,5 cm in height because i can clearly see that she looks taller. so my advice to people who starting to loose height is to train the back with easy weight ( chin up machine is very good to but more for the upper back) and of course yoga is great to. So at the moment she have only lost 0,4 cm at the age of 65 and im gonna check her height in a couple of month again to see if she manage to get the same posture as Before and get back to peak height again. Im not saying that everyone will get height back, she have extremelly good genetics when it comes to building muscles ( she tried benchpress when she was Young and never been at a gym and manage to bench 55 kg 4 times. But i Think everybody will benefit from it in some Little way.

To Mark commenting about the average height gap between brothers and sisters, I'd assume that with an average 5 inch difference between males and females, you'd expect a similar difference between siblings. There's just over 6 inch difference between me and my sister. She ate terribly during her teenage years though, did little exercise and started smoking around 14 or so. Surprised it's not more of a gap though. I on the other hand lived a clean life and ate very well. Spitting image of my grandad though, who was just over 5 foot 9, so feel lucky to have ended up 3 inches taller than him and ended up a solid 6 foot. Annoyed to not have made it to my dad's peak height of a solid 6 foot 2. That for me is and always will be the dream height.

@Christian: I wouldn’t put 6’6” in that category either. I don’t consider a 6’6” guy that degree of tall standing next to me since it’s only about a 2” difference. More 6’8” to 6’9” range probably starting around 205cm maybe. I’d start Extreme tall as 200cm or 6’6.5-6’7 range.

The measuring hook has little rivets so that it slides the same thickness as the actual hook. So that when you place the hook onto something or put the tape on the ground to measure upwards, both should be accurate.

Greg said on 17/Jan/20
@mrfunnyguy if you feel ‘ a lot’ shorter it’s most likely because you are. Why don’t just do a measurement video? Wouldn’t that make more sense instead of doing the 3 pictures, for all we know you could be standing on something or going on your tippy toes just saying. That’s a pretty big fridge if it’s 6’1, anyways do the measurement video and report back.

@Christian Well that’s a good weight for a 6’5 guy, if you where a little shorter and it was mainly fat it would on be on the higher end of the norm. Though I’m not exactly sure of your body fat % I think you said you do work out every now and then? I’m in the 160 range usually, but I’ve been more and less my weight fluctuates a lot. Also your metabolism could be slower than mine, some people need to eat less than others. Those sound like pretty massive meals if they are over 1K+, but I know different schedules make it harder for someone to eat at certain points. And to answer your question about my longest time without eating. Could be a few hours but afterwards I usually eat a big meal. I have an extremely fast metabolism so to gain I need to eat 3000+ calories especially combined with working out and training I should be okay at 3500. 4000 would be ideal no matter of the intensity of which I train.

@Canson well I’m in a community college and hopefully I’ll be transferring soon to a university, so I guess post-grad?.

In my opinion the 5'9 range is the start of what could be called anything decent. In europe 183cm or 184cm is solid. 184cm could be perfect. 181cm or 182cm is good but not quite enough. 185cm/186cm is a very solid and decent height range, but somehow it's just marginally excessive in my opinion - (speaking of places like the UK and US). In Scandinavia 6'2 would be the best height to be, 6'2 or 6'3 for northern Holland. But judging based on ideal proportions 6'2 is excessive in my opinion. There is a point when in real life the head of a man just becomes a bit too big. That point is 185cm/186cm. Look at someone like Arnold Schwarzenegger in the film Predator. He looks perfect at 6'1.5 with his fantastic steroid-crafted body. He knew what he wanted to achieve with the pump (aside from a son with Guatemalan housekeeper). But nevertheless, fantastic build. He is a legend for what he has achieved regardless of how he got there. On screen 6'1/6'2/6'3/6'4 looks great, but in real life 183cm/184cm looks the best. 181cm looks good in real life but not quite enough to be ideal. If we subtract steroids 185cm/186cm looks slightly too much to be ideal.

As for nothern germany. 6'2 can feel average awfully many times and even in smaller cities. To really make be taller pretty much everytime you need to be atleast a solid 6'4 in my opinion. There are quite many 6'2 and 6'3 footers for some reason, or atleast you'd not expect to see so many people to be taller than you by ~1.5 - 2 inches when you are in your boots which give you about 2-3cm additional in height. Hamburg for example has an average height of 183cm (6'0), which might explain that it barely feels above average. To really stand out there you need to enter 195cm+ (6'5+) territory. Maybe it's because of the big population? Then again I visited Barcelona which has an even bigger population if I recall right and I still felt noticeable taller than most there, so I don't think it's a matter of population size per se. It's really hard to stand out much below 6'4 in clubs in such there.

AndrewV said on 15/Jan/20

5'8" is in the average range for the general population at the 35th-40th percentile, but around young white adults it's at the 25th percentile. I wouldn't really call 5'8" a short height overall but around young white people in the US and UK you will have many instances of feeling short.

I forgot to mention gigantism and other pituitary gland disorders. But other than that, a normal healthy person can't grow beyond his max genetic potential.

What you said is pretty much correct. The average height varies by state. In some northern Midwestern states, it could be as tall as 5'10", and the shrotst ones are barely 5'8". I live in Cali, and it's probably one of the shortest, as it doesn't feel much over 5'8", maybe 5'8.5" at a stretch, but no more.

@Mark O'Connor
Yeah, it's possible, but there aren't too many 186 guys with 13cm eye levels. It's definitely much longer than average.
InsecureTeen said on 14/Jan/20
186cm at night, 188cm out of bed, 186-187 during most of the day. What should I claim my height is in feet and inches? also would 187cm be good? 188? 186?
Greg said on 14/Jan/20
@6footTom Yeah I have that too, I always witness guys between 5’9-5’11 claim 6’0, and when I say 5’11 I mean closer to 5’11 flat rather than 6’0. I’ve had someone ask me if I was 6’0 before when I’m over an inch a half shorter than that. And people try to inflate me saying that I “have to be taller” even though I’ve measured myself more times then they did, as much as I would love to be taller unfortunately that is not the case. Also I noticed guys who can’t pull off boosting to 6’0, will just boost to 5’10 or 5’11, like guys between 5’7-5’9. With the exception of 2 5’9ish guys I’ve met before that tried to say they where 6’0, I immediately called them out and they refused to believe the truth. There are 2 kids in mind who are like 5’10 more or less and both try to say 6’0, the one kid tried to say 6’1, and I was like “what do you mean 6’1?” And he tried going back to 6’0 and I said no way, I might have even edged the guy out that was the funny part. As 6 footers sometimes they will say 6’1-6’2 it really depends. Guys in the 5’11 range bracket might try to sneak a 6’1 claim which is funny they think they wouldn’t get called out. That’s why everyone thinks different of all those marks. 5’10 is also the go to for most guys between 5’7-5’8 because it’s like the minimal excepted height in society. It’s a strange system really.
Greg said on 14/Jan/20
@Canson Yeah I’m 24, so haven’t grown since 18, it’s both good and bad having a bad posture well it’s good in the sense that i can bring out ‘hidden height’ through stretches and stuff. Bad is because I’ve developed damaged discs and the posture to begin with. And yeah my pattern constantly changes because not every single night will get a good quality sleep, or sometimes I’ll do more training. On the other hand, I could optimize everything on some days and have more of a relaxed days so measure taller.
Greg said on 14/Jan/20
@Kellan you must not really be 6’0 if you really feel average in the U.S among young white folks. I don’t understand where people get this false perception of the white American average. From what I observed it’s probably 5’9ish at most. I’m just under 5’11 and I feel tallish/above average amongst young white guys. If you’re 6’0 feet you should be feeling tall. There’s really not that many guys 6’0 or over, it’s 83rd percentile that’s no where near average.
Greg said on 14/Jan/20
@Christian yeah think of it this way, depending on your own goal whether it be maintenance, weight loss or gain you have to adjust your calories and macros accordingly. But of course you should be taking in the minimum nutritional needs. Yeah like for me I feel like I need at least 4-6 decently portioned meals to gain weight, my metabolism is pretty fast plus I’m highly active but somebody else might need only 1 or 2, however they would have to be very caloric dense meals.

Broadly speaking, 6'0" in the US is:
75th percentile around young white and black guys
80th percentile around young people of all races
84th percentile in the general population
95th percentile for young Asians and Hispanics

It's the start of tall, where as 6'1" would be solid tall (85th percentile around young white and black guys).

@Luke Heinz If you don't want to claim the half just say 'about 5'10' because you'll be hovering around the mark for a good portion of the day. The main thing is you're rounding, not inflating.

Very rarely would I hear anything like that, and maybe it is more of a bit of banter/humour.

Maybe with younger guys/girls and a wider circle of friends you would hear more comments like that.

Yeah it depends how many people you are walking by during a day. We do go out to the big shopping centre every day and so are probably seeing a fair amount of people, but it is very rare for us to see 6ft 8 or taller in our town, and still quite rare that 6ft 6-8 range.

Going into the city (Glasgow, about 10 miles away) increase the amount of folk you see and there are definitely more sightings of very very tall 6ft 6+ people....

What you said is true. But even people with faster metabolisms can only eat 1 or 2 meals per day, if they have enough willpower and patience.

There's really no exceeding beyond your max potential. One can grow up with having the best nutrition and healthcare in the world, but if his max genetic potential is 5'6" for example, then he won't end up taller than 5'6". The only way you can maybe exceed your potential, is if you were bred in a lab, lol.

@Vsquad On the flip side though you won't be described as short, unless you're surrounded by people a lot taller. In fact you'll rarely even be towered unless 6'4+ is common is where you live. Nowadays those are two big factors considering the emphasis on being tall.

A legit 6'0" is quite tall to a lot of people. But because the media treats 6'0" as the standard male height and a lot of 5'10" - 5'11" guys tend to claim 6'0" people don't really consider that number tall and we tend to forget just how tall a legit 6'0" guy can look. I'm the same height and I recently had an interesting exchange with a classmate who asked me about my height.

Classmate: "Wait, how tall are you?"
Me: "I'm around 6 feet."
Classmate: "Really? I thought you were taller than that."
Me: "Yeah, I get that one a lot."
Classmate: "Oh, well at least it's nice that you appear tall."

The last bit is interesting because she was more or less suggesting that she would have considered me as tall if I hadn't told her what my real height was. But now that the cat's out of the bag, I only "appear" tall. It kind of goes to show how 6'0" has become somewhat of an undervalued height these days.

I’ve gotten the you look taller than that a lot. Imagine being a strong 6’4”And constantly being asked if I’m taller

I think half inch over a mark at a low...and then rounding down is probably going to make a few folk raise an eyebrow.

@Christian yeah but the thing is different people have different body and fitness goals, so what one person might consider good for their digestive system or maybe bodytype might be different from the next. So yeah you’re not wrong but Inter fasting is only for a different type of goal and works better with other body types that don’t have a fast metabolism, for example for me it wouldn’t work. Some bodybuilders do high carbs or low carbs but high protein, most of them that is. But diets different from individuals.

@Progking Yeah I know what you mean I feel tallish here in America, white guys definitely do not average more than 5’9 and even then I don’t see many guys close to or over 5’9 like there a few obviously and taller than that but for my observation in many different places that’s what I noticed. Yeah I think 5’10-5’11 range is tallish here. If I didn’t stunt my growth I think I could have ended up at least a legit 5’11 maybe 6’0 or close. Yeah it’s nice to be 6’0 in boots despite it not being legit 😂
Greg said on 11/Jan/20
@Equal While there no particularly good heights or bad ones, there might be some preferred heights. You have guys like Khaled Taban who think 5’9 is short or not good enough when in fact it’s perfectly average, you or Rob at 5’8 are low average in most places, girls wouldn’t be calling you short, but you’re right. 5’10 is just slightly above average in most places, I think an ideal height might be between 5’10-6’2 give or take. But that’s just my opinion.

@Canson so I think I’m 5’11 exactly out of bed this could vary more or less depending on the quality of sleep I get and how hydrated I am during the time being. I’ve been doing these ‘posture correction exercises advised to me by my chiropractor which could increase my height a little bit, it’s not growth however it’s ‘hidden height’ I have damaged discs and terrible posture which causes me to slightly under measure s bit. So I’ve been doing exercises and combined with glucosamine it’s really been helping me. Generally on a non relaxed day I will drop to my low really quickly so while carrying a heavy school bag and walking around for hours I could measure 5’10.25-5’10 3/8ths. That day I was just walking around and laying down every now and then. But I had to measure myself many times to make sure it was the right figure but I double checked and it was 5’10 5/8ths, 5’10.5 is usually what I am in the afternoon. Oh and I don’t wake up at 6-7am, for college I wake up around 10-11am but usually I wake up around 12pmish, so I mean 2-3 hours out of bed I’m 5’10.5 in 5 hours I would be closer to my low usually.
Bobby 1.78m (5ft 10in) said on 11/Jan/20

We have similar stats. I also wake up at 179cm, but I can fall further than 177.5cm, down to 177.2cm normally. Although I claim 178cm anyway and don't give a hoot if anyone calls me out for it. I can technically fall to 176.5-7cm at an absolute low but this happens rarely. Also depending on sleep and hydration, my morning height can be reduced by a fraction. You might actually measure a fraction taller than me in the morning, perhaps 5'10 5/8s.

I think you're reading too much into that exchange. She responded to what you said, that you "get that one a lot," implying it's a minor annoyance to have your height misjudged as being higher than it is. She replied with "well at least it means people think you appear to be tall," meaning that you should take their guesses as a compliment, not necessarily that 6foot isn't supposed to appear tall.
Sakz said on 10/Jan/20
@Progking Facial proportions aren't an accurate way to determine height because everyone's head size varies. They are a good indicator to determine how other people will perceive your height though, just as eye level would. 7 inches is closer to my upper lip and I have an average sized head. You're right that it can appear anywhere between 6 and 7 inches, and that depends on your head size.

@6footTom Purely based on what you said, the impression I get is she just thought you were taller rather than hinting you're not tall at 6'0. It is the bare minimum in terms of how tall they desire men to be after all. However, it has become an undervalued height now and a lot of women don't know how tall a 6 footer really is, mainly due to inflation.

Workouts or intense weight sessions will push your discs to levels they normally don't expect, and maybe make you measure an extreme low...but your discs can recover after some rest period. Prolonged (years) of really heavy weights (like deadlifts) might increase risks of some degeneration to the discs.

So my question would be what height should i claim and how can I maintain my peak height as long as possible? Thanks in advance.

You don't fall to 5ft 9.5, so I think a claim of 5ft 10 is fair for you.
FiveEightJake said on 10/Jan/20

I think possibly 2-3 inches. My dad is nearly 5’10 and mum is 5’6, I’m only 5’8.5, my two brothers are 5’8 and 6’

My 6’ brother basically did all the right things, exercised everyday, ate well. Me and my 5’8 brother probably didn’t eat as well as we could have, we did do enough exercise I’d say but I avoided vegetables and milk until I was about 17 and by then it was too late for me to grow anymore, I didn’t even become height conscious until last year at the age of 23 lol.

It’s all just guess work really though, my brother may have been that tall regardless, and I may have actually maximised my potential as I do have quite small hands and feet for my height. I may have only been destined for 5’6-5’7 as my size 7 feet suggest :o (btw there is no correlation between feet size and you know what)

@Equal 5’10 is ok but I think 5’11.5-6’0 range is better a decent 5’10 though does look tallish from my personal experience as I touch 5’11 first thing out of bed and am 5’10.5/5’10 5/8ths in the noon but I will say this it is a pretty decent height you will be close to 6’0 in most shoes and reach 6’0 in boots.

@Greg: that’s an odd pattern. By noon do you mean 5 hours after waking? The average person loses about 5/8” from the time they wake until lunch. Are you a solid 5’11 or a hair over when you wake up? I could see maybe 5’10 1/2 lunchtime from 5’11 1/8” maybe. But in some cases if someone lays reclined it may cause them to maintain height. I’ve lost Almost all of mine within about 3 hours before once or twice from going to the gym in the AM and lifting where I lost it in two that time and once I went jogging and measured

Too many short guys claim 5’8 as a safe claim and it messes it up for us who are legit. I had a colleague tell me they’re 5’9 and they are two inches shorter than me! I didn’t call them out though I’m not that nasty, If people are insecure or unsure it is what it is.

Not necessarily. The FDA and the medical industry in general, have conditioned us that the more meals per day, the better. but constantly eating nonstop isn't good, because the GI system won't get a chance to take a break. Eating more meals also speeds up your metabolism, increasing your chances of becoming fat, as well as a host of other issues. And you don't have to eat lots of meals even if you're bodybuilding, as there are plenty of bodybuilders who do IF (intermittent fasting).

A legit 6 footer has an eye level (around 5'7.5") that sees above the heads of conventionally tall women and looms pretty large over the 5'4"-ish eye levels of 5'9" men. I don't know if that's worth laughing over or being called "massive," but it's not strange to be seen as a bigger dude at that height.

@Some anonymous person, where are you from?
@Alex 6'3.25, your listed height would make you decently above average both in the Netherlands and the Balkans (which are similar in height). Once you're past 188 cm (6'2), there won't be a simple person in the world (mentally handicapped excluded) who will call you average or short.

@Sakz weird i think tip of nose for me is 6.75 inches or so. I think its hard to get an exact height from that as tip can be anywhere from 6-7 inches.

Do you live in a country where 183cm is exceptionally or very tall? Even if you don't, anyone who's at upper percentiles of height will get comments and remarks from time to time.

@ Some anonymous person - Where do you live?
Grayloth said on 8/Jan/20

Like I have said many times before, the average height has been m-e-a-s-u-r-e-d in Sweden every year, up until 10 years ago, since the 1940s in military drafting and it's been around 180 cms since the 1980s (same as the other Scandinavian countries by the way).

You keep making up excuses to yourself because you can't face that you either aren't 6'1 as you say or you can't judge height at all. I am 6'3.25 guy from Sweden and people always refer to me as tall or the tall guy.

@ George89 - You are virtually average for a man! Whereabouts (autocorrect tried to change it to snouts! 🐩!) in the UK do you live?
mrfunnyguy said on 8/Jan/20
@Mark O'Connor I'm half a centimeter shorter than that (about 187.5 cm in the morning), and I see women taller than me literally all the time when along the street downtown. Are you from America if you don't mind me asking?

I am only 183cm or 6ft for short. I know I am still tall but some people treat me like I am some massive guy. There were even some girls laughing at how tall I am. I don't know why I am percieved as so tall
Sakz said on 8/Jan/20
@Mark O'Connor You'd expect them to be about 6'1. That's where 5'7 reaches on me.

I talked to a woman and she looked taller than me and I am 188 cm in the morning, but she had about 4/5 cm heel. I have a quite low eyelevel, at around 173 cm at night, while she had a small head and a higher eyelevel of course, do you think it is only a perception and she could have been as tall as me or even shorter? I had flat vans

There's not many basketball players who have been taller and had a global impact like Yao has.

simple height chart . night heights . non elderly men from europe and nearby regions :

167.5cm = short

172.5cm = borderline short/medium

177.5cm = medium

182.5cm = borderline tall/medium

187.5cm = tall

the closer you are to a certain height I listed the more you fall in that category
Sakz said on 7/Jan/20
@Equal To add to that point a lot of women don't even know what a 5'10 or 6 footer looks like, which is why I think their 'ideal height' is quite pointless. For example a lot of 5'10 males will claim 6'0 and women will believe it. Basically if you were 5'10 or 5'11 they wouldn't even notice that you're not the desired 6'0, not that it should dictate a relationship.

@Visitor Yeah something like that is definitely down to injury. A lot of people have slight variations and assume it's height loss, but that can't happen unless you have an injury or a spinal condition. Of course posture also plays a big role.
George89 said on 7/Jan/20
Just chucking it out there I don't feel short at 173cm at night in the UK. Feel taller than most people I come across and by that I mean most women, old people and a good 30% of men. I have good posture and usually wear at least an inch shoe or trainer. I think most people are measuring themselves wrong or are lying if they feel short at 5ft8. Yes there are situations when you're around 6ft+ people that can make you feel short but on the whole it's not a bad height. Just saying!

@Visitor consider that in the past average was lower. I don't know where you and your grandfather from, but in the 1910-1950/60 average was around 5'5-5'8 in the most country

As you can see the average height is around 180-181 for young swedish men.

And also, average height is around 182-183 for young ethnic dutch men. (182,5 for young men born in 1994 and add 0,5 cm to get young ethnic dutch men).

It really depends on the standard deviation of a population. The higher the standard deviation, the further you'd have to be from average to be at a higher/lower percentile.
mrfunnyguy said on 7/Jan/20
@AndrewV All statistics from Sweden will probably show that the average is in deed around 5'11.5, but since many people lie about height, the self reported statistics are not very reliable. Here in Sweden many people tend to downgrade their height instead of inflating it like in many other countries, which probably means that the real average is a bit higher than the self reported. I even know a guy who knows himself that he is around six foot but calls himself 175 cm (5'9) for example.
As for the official measured average, I would guess that it's incorrectly measured, even though I know it sounds ridiculous when I say it. When I measure myself on the height markings in stores here in Sweden, I often end up like 5'11-5'11.5, but sometimes 6'1 like I have measured myself at home. I've measured myself with different measuring tapes, rulers and even yardsticks, in different places, and I always get that I'm about exactly 6'1 (185.4-185.5cm) in the evening, so I don't believe I've overmeasured myself. Still, very often (but not always), I measure myself as 5'11.5 or something like that in stores.
Some other guy here from Sweden (I think it was Lell but I'm sorry if remember it wrong) told me that people often underestimate his height, and I've also noticed that people here for some weird reason have an incorrect perception of height. Which is the opposite from a lot of other countries where people often overestimate other people's heights instead.
Alex 6'3.25 said on 7/Jan/20
Guys, which height do you consider more ideal in Netherlands to be perceived decently tall?
Lell said on 7/Jan/20

Age 15: 174.5 cm

Age 16: 176 cm

Age 17: 176.5 cm

Age 18: 178 cm

Age 19: 179 cm

Who is better elevator shoes or shoe lifts? Advice me please because I'm confused to buy one of them.
Editor Rob
If you are on a tight budget, lifts are the cheap option. But they move about a bit. Elevators usually have the lift built into the shape, although some have removable lift portions (but still manufactured to the shape of the shoe). I think overall elevators would be more comfortable, but they are generally quite expensive.

My grandfather was REALLY short (but stocky and very strong). Barely over 160 cm. I ended up being the 181-183 cm that I am. Going back even that one generation, you can't basically predict your height at all.
I also grew significantly after age 17. The last step took many, many years. I was measured 180 cm flat at age 20, but after that I've been measured significantly taller many, many times. I was over 181 cm 30 minutes ago. I'm not sure how common this is, but if you're that young, I mean still a teenager, don't think you're definitely done growing at that point. I also continued growing a thicker and fuller beard literally all through my twenties, I don't think that's related to height at all.

My lower back injury has been x-rayed, my spine has "dropped down" from its natural position and is also slightly curved. I still don't know if it can be corrected somehow. But that's why I've had "height loss" in my early 30's. I really was measured at slightly over 183 cm in the evening when I was 22, these days I only measure even close to that first thing in the morning. The injury probably also has something to do with why my height varies much more than others, the extreme range is 180-183 and I have even measured 179.8 after VERY heavy exercise. I really should get things fixed, my back actually hurts even right now. It's not good.

Hi Rob in your opinion. Is 3 inches above average and 3 inches below average considered the start of tall/short. Or would you say 4 inches above or below average to be considered short and tall.
Editor Rob
Yeah I think using the plus or minus 3 inch is fair for going from average to then short/tall
Sakz said on 6/Jan/20
@Progking Yeah or maybe 5'9.75 at most. 6'0 is weak low end tall whereas 6'1 is more solid tall.
Equal said on 6/Jan/20

Yeah, I hope so too. Honestly, 5’10 5/8 is a pretty killer height. At that point, your so close 5’11 (and 6’, for that matter), that you’d already look pretty tall to most. As such, I would deem 5’10 an ideal height for males. (I feel like it’s a lot of women say 6’, but it’s kind of a stretch and I think being tall is overrated).

I wish I could hit 5’10, but I’ll settle for 5’8 1/2.
