Welsh actress, best known for appearing in TV series The Liver Birds and The District Nurse. She has always claimed to be 5 feet 4 inches
tall, even in 2019 saying "I’m 5ft 4in and weigh about 10st 2lb, which isn’t too bad."

@ Rob - Hmm! It does come over as extremely sexist to do that sort of thing and then turn it into a TV comedy! Today's women would be up in arms at that sort of behaviour - and rightly so! I do remember thinking, young as I was, that men are allowed to pick women up and guess at their weight, as though they're some kind of commodity! Today it would be construed as assault! When I was walking about in the late 70's having just left school, men would still guess at our weight, though the lifting up had been largely substituted by a letcher's eye, which would follow you around for a few minutes and then the owner of said eye would shout out your weight in earshot of everyone! I think that was equally embarrassing as being lifted onto a table!
That went on as well, you know! 😧
Editor Rob: attitudes and what is acceptable behaviour certainly changes over the years, mostly for the better...
incidentally Nerys also once popped up in a Doctor Who and I think from memory edged out 5ft 5 Matthew Waterhouse in not really that big a heel...

When her flatmate was the tiny Polly James, 'Liver Bird' Nerys Hughes definitely came over as 'the tall one' of the coupling! In fact, that's what my Mum so often called her, or the 'dark-haired one' sometimes! I knew she wouldn't be mega-tall when I saw that she has been added to celebheights, but I'd have believed 5ft5.5 for her!
Ha ha - I would hardly have disputed that 5ft4 was a very tall woman at the time the 'Liver Birds' was shown as I was years away from double figures myself and therefore in the low 4ft-somethings! Yet I DO remember the series very well AND all the many references that were made to size, be it height, weight or personal measurements! Indeed I can recall an entire episode which was totally dedicated to 'the guys' lifting Nerys's character, Sandra, onto a table and guessing her weight and vital statistics! It went on to be a competition, Sandra finding that her measurements were larger because she had put on weight and then having to diet madly to regain her original weight and trim 24" waist; the lads estimated that it was 26" and she vehemently denied it!
When they all met up again armed with tape measure and scales, as arranged, to see who was right, the boys had changed their guesses to the real ones of 38-26-38! Sandra was back down to 36-24-36*, and her favourite weight: 8-and-a-half stone, I think! You could say that it was a win-win situation because, although Sandra lost the bet, she regained her superb measurements and happy weight at lightning speed!
* These measurements are in accordance with my memory and I hope they are correct!
Nerys gets 5ft4 from me!
an episode like lifting a women and guessing her weight and stats might not make it past the writer's room these days!
When you see Nerys near Valerie Leon
, you realise she was indeed a more average height lady!
