Speaking as a 6'5" movie fan, I disagree that (what you seem to be saying) an actors' stature has any bearing on their acting talent or presence. Pacino in the 70s gave several great performances: Serpico, The Godfathers, Dog Day Afternoon, or even more recent films like Glengarry Glen Ross, no one else could have done those roles as well...I'd only agree that in Scarecrow he was miscast. The only Pacino scene where his diminutive size actually put me off a scene was in Heat when he beat up the much more strapping Henry Rollins character.
PatB said on 27/Sep/11
I'm sorry that my remerks about Pacino upset some others, but Pacino is not a very good actor and a lot of that preceeds directly from his height - or lack thereof.

Wallace Shawn is tall enough for the parts he plays. So is Danny DeVito. So is The Rock and so was John Wayne. The problem is that Pacino usually plays tough guys and he looks ridiculous. He was much better in Donnie Brasco where he played an underling. But in Heat and Rightous Kill he plays a lead character whereas he's a natural sidekick.

Pacino became famous in the Godfather films. Remember in that plot he is considered not to be a full blown mobster at first. He's the sweet little kid protected by the large scary mobsters. Then he volunteers to kill Sollozzo. Everyone is amazed. That's the drama. The smallest and youngest of the sons turns out to be the toughest and smartest son and ultimately his father's sucessor. Pacino was nearly perfect for that role and that plot. But alas he's much less than perfect for most other movie roles because of his size. He's a tiny, slight guy and now he's a tiny, slight and old guy.

Watch him in Heat. He chews up the scenery. He's playing the leader of an elite police squad made up of normal size cops. He compensates by continuously overacting. No character in that film refers to him as stumpy, or shorty. They act as if he were a normal size cop. Big city street cops used to have to be six feet tall. A cop his age and his size would be remarked upon by his peers.

Pacino cannot play comedy. He was embarassing in Scarecrow, not funny. He can't play drawing room, or board room either, much less musicals. He has been typecast as an ethnic criminal (or cop) and almost all of his famous roles are within that narrow compass. Even that other short actor who was also typecast as a gangster - James Cagney - had some physicality. If Pacino hit you he looks like he'd break his hand.

Pacino shot to fame playing a small civilized guy who improbably becomes a mob leader. He's been too small for almost every role he's played since.

I'm 5'5". Saw Al Pacino arrive at the theater for a play and he was at least an inch, probably two, under me. Incredibly charming, btw.

I saw Pacino at my work 2001. He walked right by me - he was dressed all in black and he had shoes/boots with a "heel" on them. What surprised me is that he was really petite. I swear he could of not been over 5'4

Duvall is hard to pin down ... He looked tall in The godfather for some reason though lol ... I can buy 5'9 though ... Yes Lorne , We should go to New York to get married and Rob can be best man LOL JK !

Al Pacino is the best. I think he is 5 foot 5.

i dunno about a strong 5'9" peak for duvall. 5'9" flat peak for him makes more sense. he wasn't any taller than robert de niro in TRUE CONFESSIONS and he looked around 5'8" next to ray liotta in JOHN Q. he obviously lost height at that point, but he was 70 and i doubt he lost 1 inch at that point.
the shredder said on 6/Aug/11
Exactly lorne , He was 5'5 in The Godfather ... Brando had an easy 4 " on him .

He has to be 5'5, because even if Duvall and Caan were wearing lifts, Pacino looked so much shorter than both of them. Caan looked like a giant next to him, Pacino barely reached above the tip of his nose. Still, we all knew he was really short anyways, yet he's one of the best actors who ever lived, and probably the one with the most iconic performances in cinema history. How come he only makes 11 million $ per movie, while talented unknown hobos can take 15+ million $???
tell-em said on 4/Aug/11

The guy who said Pacino is around 5ft 8inches (I think his name is Azza) is COMPLETELY DERANGED!!! He is another of these sad people who believe that their heroes need to be tall or of at least average height. Pacino is an ALL TIME GREAT ACTOR & he is SHORT (between 5ft 5 & 5ft 6)! Nothing u say or do can change that!

I know Ill get comments at me ... IMO even in The Godfather I think he was like 5'5 ... He looked too short next to average height men Like Brando and Cann . Brando was measured 5'8 and 3/4 at 17 , He had 5 " on Al Pacino .

Many years ago (1990s!) in an interview I read that he was 5ft 5.5inches tall and the magazine said that he was a half inch taller than Dustin Hoffman who was himself listed as 5ft 5inches. But sadly, I don't know how accurate the magazine was!

Pacino met the Rock and myself at sundance film festival. When Redford appeared we were astonished by the difference in height between the latter and Pacino. IMO Pacino, lifts or no lifts, was never short at all. Slighty less than 5'7'' and maybe 168cm now, as stated above.

Mr. Pacino is 5'5 I know this because, the company I work for supplied a few of the vehicles in the funeral scene in the Godfather. I did not meet him, however my Boss did, she is 5'5 and they were eye to eye. She was told he looks taller on film because they put lifts in his shoes, this way he was at least even with Diane Keaton. I don't care if the man were to be 5'1, his talent is unmeasurable! Just like Elvis being the King of Rock, and M.J. the king of pop, Al Pacino is the King of acting... hmmm or the have a good one all!
Kat said on 21/Jan/11
PatB, what the hell is your problem? Pacino was great in many movies post-Godfather - The Devil's Advocate, Donnie Brasco, Scent of a Woman, Angels in America and most recently You Don't Know Jack - which he just won an emmy and Golden Globe for! So Suck on that...

Back on topic, I say Al is around 5'4 now and 5'6 in his prime...He is very slight built so it makes him look smaller. But it doesn't matter how tall he was/is, he still towers over most men in terms of talent, looks, and charisma:)
Neil McDougall said on 16/Jan/11
PatB, I don't know what you mean by "too slight to be inducted"? Audie Murphy was 5'5" and 110lbs when he enlisted. I don't think he did too badly? He was only the most decorated American soldier of World War II.
Will said on 16/Jan/11
Al Pacino has always and will be a 5'5" maximum. Not too sure of him being at 5'7" barefoot though. These days he has yet looked considerably shorter. Well, possibly due to a little shrink. He is diminutive at being only 5'4 1/2" tall.

Pacino is IMHO a pretty bad actor. He can take direction, that was clear in the first two Godfather movies. He was cast as a wormy, dirty junkie in his first movie - "Panic in Needle Park". He was firmly on the path to being a minor ethnic character actor when somehow God smiled on him and he got the lead in the Godfather. Coppola gave him dignity and gravitas. He was never so good again.

He fit in the Godfather cast because the actor they wanted to play Sonny was James Caan. Sonny in the book is a very large scary person - probably 6'3" or so. But Caan was about 5'9" - about a half foot too short. Michael in the book is described as an average sized person - maybe 5'9". But with a 5'9" Sonny they needed a 5'3" Michael actor. Michael in the book was a war hero. Al Pacino is probably to slight to be inducted. I don't remember seeing any guys as small as Pacino when I was in the army.

A good actor is a versatile actor. Consider Kevin Kline. He can play heavy drama - "Sophie's Choice" or comedy - "A Fish Called Wanda". He can play the romantic lead or a supporting part. Hell! he can sing and dance too.

Pacino in contrast can only play ethnic mobsters. Luckily for him ethnic mobster movies became very, very popular. So nowadays we have this tiny overacting seventy year old character actor cavorting with women young enough to be his grandaughter and dukeing it out with large strong young men.

There are no spoofs of Pacino movies - he's ridiculous enough as he is.

Coppola wanted to cast Pacino in The Godfather. Producer Robert Evans was dead set against it. "A runt will not play Michael," Evans told Coppola. In addition to Warren Beatty, Jack Nicholson, and Dustin Hoffman, James Caan (who stood at an average 5'9") was among those auditioning for the Oscar-nominated role. In Evans' 1994 memoir, The Kid Stays in the Picture, he describes a tense negotiation process involving door-slamming and remarks, such as, "This ain't Mutt and Jeff. This kid Pacino's five five, and that's in heels."

Yo Tellem, about your ignorance post in January; The average male height might well be 5 9 now, but it was NOT that in the 1700's! At the turn of the century (1900 or so) average male height was 5 4 or 5 5. Improved nutrition has increased this over the last 100 years. Thats why if you go into 200-400 year old houses (i live in the UK, so we have those!) the ceilings seem ridiculously low.
guyfrommars said on 14/Jun/09
In the old days of Hollywood nearly every male actor wore lifts. Leading men had to look tall next to their partners, guys like Bogart did almost everything from camera angles to huge platform shoes to look bigger. In the generation change of the late 1960s - early 1970s when people like Pacino, Dustin Hoffmann or Peter Falk became stars it wasn't a huge disadvantage for these "average guys" to be short anymore. Of course action heroes like Tom Cruise, Stallone or Mel Gibson still suffered from being short and stayed with the htradition of huge lifts.

Sometimes I swear Al looks 5-5 max. In the Godfather he was just towered by a 5-10 James Caan by probably 5 inches. I've heard people speculate that Caan wore lifts, but it's a known fact that Pacino did as well in that film.

Then what also fuels my short theories are the fact that Sean Penn barefoot was taller than Pacino in 2" cowboy boots in Carlito's Way! How tall is Penn? 5-7 or 5-8? Not to mention that in 2" or 2.5" heels Pacino still looked tiny in Scarface. Even with the heels I could swear he looked 5'4", 5'5" sometimes! For years I thought Steven Bauer was huge because of how he towered over Pacino. Then in the Devil's Advocate even with some huge shoes, 6-1 Keanu Reeves looked nearly a head taller than him.

I have no problem with 5'6" for Al, but sometimes he really struggles with that height. Regardless of height he may be my favorite actor though, so this is nothing against him. He just looks really short, shorter than 5'6" a lot of times. He did look possibly 5'7" in ...And Justice For All, though I don't remember his footwear.
glenn said on 16/Apr/09
thanks ema,but al is 5-6.not me.if thats what you meant.he has heels on above and i still tower him.that would make him 5-3,5-4.which is not possible.unless you meant kinda sounds like you meant him.but the way people have been attacking my height lately,im not sure.

Doug said on 1/Apr/09
I always thought Pacino a similar height to Hoffman, was around 5'6", now around 5'5", he is probably actually a little taller than Hoffman ever was by half an inch?. there is even a scene in the devil's advocate where keanu reeves' character looks down at the elevator's pacino is wearing at the edge of the top of the building. they were silly big heels, and he still looked tiny next to reeves. I'd say 5'5'' at best even in the early days. You have to take into account the average height in the 60's and 70's for a man was 5'7" and he was below average then. DiNero looked average or above back then, and now he skews short.

These kind of posts just tick me right off. Such ignorance. Average height in the 60-70s was like 5'8" 1/2 maybe even 5'9" flat and thats been the average height since the 1700's or so up until about the 90s where average male height when up to about 5'10" maybe slightly under. RisingForce said on 20/Dec/08
Yeah but in your earlier posts Glenn you seemed convinced that he was no more than 5'5". While I think he could have been close to 5'6", I've never seen a 5'7" guy who looks as short as Pacino. Maybe he's still a strong 5'5" today and he just hid his lifts well in the normal shoes you saw him in.
leonari said on 20/Dec/08
If he was 5'6" that is peak height. 5'4 surely is an illusion. I don't buy 5'6" these days.
TELLEM said on 19/Dec/08
i don't even think he was 5'6...somewhere on here somebody posted an interview of pacino that hes worn lifts in 95% of his movies, and its been documented that he was called an italian dwarf by the studio during the godfather days
glenn said on 19/Dec/08
i agree he can give illusions of 5-4.but i saw him last year look a shocking 5-6.25,5-6.5 in what appeared to be normal shoes.i then wondered if the 5-7 was true.i did see him once taller than me by a half ridiculous, obvious lifts.
RisingForce said on 18/Dec/08
Pacino is not 5 foot 7 and never has been. I doubt he was ever any taller than 5-6(if that).

Next to 5 foot 8 robert deniro, he was 1 inch shorter. Charlize theron and keanu reeves towered over him in the devil's advocate. 5 foot 7.

Pacino is such a unique talent.

Height doesn't mean a thing, if you aint got STATUA(presence)

PRESENCE is worth ten fold in height.
Pacino has massive presence, and is a legend.

True talent!
Danimal said on 12/Dec/08
I give him a peak height of 5'5.5"-5'6" and not any taller. Seeing he is in his late 60's now, he could be down to 5'4".
Charles said on 11/Dec/08
there is even a scene in the devil's advocate where keanu reeves' character looks down at the elevator's pacino is wearing at the edge of the top of the building. they were silly big heels, and he still looked tiny next to reeves. I'd say 5'5'' at best even in the early days. You have to take into account the average height in the 60's and 70's for a man was 5'7" and he was below average then. DiNero looked average or above back then, and now he skews short.
RisingForce said on 7/Dec/08
Who cares how tall he is when he's wearing shoes? Barefoot height is what counts.

Al Pacino's height at 5'7" sounds right. He's definitely taller than the stated 5'6" when he's wearing shoes.

when he was called to make the godfather film, the studio rejected him even calling him "an italian" dwarf...i highly doubt a 5'6 man would be called dwarf...i truly think pacino was never 5'6...more like 5'5...he even stated that 95% of films he wore lifts
RisingForce said on 29/Nov/08
I agree leonari. I'm a big fan as well. My favorite Pacino movies are Scarface, Serpico, The first 2 Godfathers, Carlito's Way, And Justice For all and Donnie Brasco.

A weak 5'6" could be right for his peak height. Maybe more like 5'5" by the time Glenn met him.

Of course Brad saw him when he was 6'4" and was able to magically tell that Pacino was exactly 11 inches shorter than him in 1974.....

Pacino wore some ridiculous shoes in these pictures.

Why do these producers and directors cast women who are just too tall for the man. In the Godfather, Diane Keaton was just too tall for Al Pacino. There was no chemistry between them and I wonder if the height thing was why.

I think that the 5'4 thing is pretty over the top.He is about 5'5 or 5'6. He is about the same tall of Dustin Hoffman. See how in the premiere he almost looked the same than 5'9 Deniro at some times.

Are we counting his massive 3" wig in this count?

Malin Akerman is 5'7". In this picture (Click Here) with 3" heels, she is at least 2 inches taller than Carla Cugino who is 5'5" giving Carla 2-3" heels.

In this same premiere, Carla is eyes-to-nose over Pacino in this picture (Click Here) She is ALSO bending, which negates the height from her heels. If we bring her back down to 5'6" with the plus heels, minus bending, he is 5'4ish. If we don't include his lifts.

btw i've been watching tons of AL PACINO movies, started with Godfather, Scarface, Scent of woman, Insomnia (damn amazing movie), 88 minutes....

so far what i perceived..

Godfather and Scarface = 5'7.25 in shoes that looks like elevators, so weak 5'6 no shoes

Scent of a woman = looks 5'6.5 in shoes, so 5'5.75 no shoes

Insomnia = looks amazingly tallish in normal shoes around 5'7, possibly 5'6 no shoes

Dogs day afternoon = looks as short as 5'5 in shoes possibly 5'4 without shoes

Devil's advocate = huge lifts very visible in the final scene (i posted the image below), looks 5'6.5 tops in shoes, so 5'5 no shoes.

88 minutes = 5'6 in normal shoes, 5'5 no shoes

the final word for me is this, early movies till 1990 he was 5'6.5, after the 90s 5'6, late 90s and 2000+ = 5'5 to 5'5.5.

the AL PACINO average is 5'6 and i believe he has never been 5'7, 5'6.5 is the tallest he ever was.

you agree?

Sven and Dago Red, I think italians are relatively short, generally speaking.5'8 is surely not very short in Italia since it's about half an inch shorter than average for the young men,if I remember well. And pretty much all the italian guys I know are on the short side.Like, 5'5-5'8 but I don't know a lot of italian guys so I might be wrong. But I'm sure that plenty of young italian men are slightly under 5'6.

Depends on if they are in the North or South, Southern Italians are shorter and darker. My family is from a town near the toe of Italy (south) and everyone there is short. I'm 5'8" (only because my father is 5'10") and my maternal uncles are 5'3" and 5'4" maternal Grandfather was 5'2" and basically everyone on that side of the family is short. The tallest male I know is a cousin who is 5'6". Not indicative of EVERYONE in Southern Italy but from what they tell me, that is the norm around there.

in CRUISING he looked lean and tallish (he was young), played the part of a gay police officer, awesome acting imo, he had simple 0.75 sport shoes walking next to a 5'11 guy he looked just about 5'7 around 170-171cm.

in the movie 88 minutes in dress shoes (and god knows what inside it) he looked barely 5'6.

my take : 169-170cm before the 90s, 168-169cm late 90s and now 166-167 2000+ that's where he really seemed to shrink.

timeless actor, many excellent movies and only a couple of average ones, his presence always lifted any bad movie above average.

Glenn & Al Pacino, envy.

I'm only 5'6" but for some reason people give you slack if you're short and Italian, which I am. Especially women. Don't know why. It's like they expect you to be short. The tallest person in my family was my grandfather at 5' 10". It's rare to see an Italian man near the 6 foot mark. Most of us are 5'5" to 5'9". Of course there are exceptions. In my experience, height has never been a factor in life. Not with jobs, girls, or sports. Confidence wins every time.

Now , Im telling you all Brando and Pacino both had very normal looking dress shoes on ... Really , adding NOTHING over about 0.5 - 2cm ... NO WAY LIFTS for both ! With that being said Brando was a legit 5'10 or Pacino was not even 5'6 at his peak ! ... Also John Cazale shoes looked very normal BUT James Cann shoes looked funny ... Looked like it added about 2 inches of heels !

Really though , Those pics show the TRUE height between Brando and Pacino ... You have to see the book for yourself ! The REAL lift wearer was James Cann !

had the chance to see him from a distance of around 3 meters, he had these strange looking dress shoes the heels looked quite elevated and he was walking funny somehow, with all these extras he didn't look anything over 170cm, this was in 2006 in Madrid Spain.

i'm quite sure he isn't any taller than 165cm these days, in his prime he used to look 168 or maybe 169cm on a good day, so the listing is correct anyway. ;)

In his movies, Al controls the stage, alike a mere handful of other great actors/performers, and his height is really no issue at all. While the viewer becomes wrapped up in Al's characters, all thoughts of height or weight vanish. In many ways, Al stands as testimony to the age-old wisdom that it matters not if you are big or small, it's what you have inside that ultimately counts.

He's an example not just for the shorter men out there, but even the taller ones. Never,NEVER has he let his height come in his way..Look at Godfather, where he plays the role of the all-powerful Don so well that whoever is in front of him just looks meek, even if he or she is taller.

And then see of my favorite movies. He just owns everyone in that movie. See Carlito's Way,or Heat, and you see how confident this man is; what an example to follow. I just wish he'd have aged better..
jackie said on 26/Jul/07
I saw a comment of George H. (waving to George!) on the Dustin Hoffman page about the height difference between Al Pacino and Warren Beatty in "Dick Tracy". It's quite hard to determine the real difference in heights, because they never really stand next to each other, and the scene you refer to where they are fighting, is shot from quite a distance. But you are definitely right that Warren simply dwarfes Al, and would have done so even if Al had stretched to full "height". Here's a collage of how Al and Warren relate to their co-stars in Dick Tracy, Madonna and Glenne Headly: Click Here Madonna was wearing massive platform shoes throughout most of the movie, Headly is listed in most publications as 5'7"-5'8" and is wearing 1-2 inch heels in her scenes.
I saw a short video film on a papparazi website once of Al and Warren leaving a restaurant together. Warren was a few feet ahead of Al, descending the steps before him. I counted four steps before he and Al looked the same height before the camera, but of course I don't know the height of each individual step plus Warren got closer to the camera with each step he descended while Al lingered a bit behind.....

5' 5" for decades. His voice is deeper now, don't know why. He couldn't do the "Scarface" game voice I'm told.

@Franco: Dude I see the same thing. 5'5" it is!!
Franco said on 1/Apr/07
@Leonari : i didnt say AL PACINO isn't the most amazing actor ever, but i really think he is 5'5 and that picture shows it, sure i know the suite looks make him look shorter and wider but the reality is still the same.

AL PACINO today is 5'5. :)

You worked on "Sea Of Love?" Great movie.
leonari said on 27/Mar/07
franco: NOTHING happened to him! He isn't wearing lifts in that pic, wears a bad suit and his torso is much wider these days due to his age so he appears shorter than ever. I think this pic pretty much proves the 5'5" estimates that many see...maybe he was close to 5'6" in the Godfather (But I doubt it) but today he is a flat 5'5" guy and still a legend and one of the most amazing actors ever.

Hey all.
I got the chance to work with Al back in the late 80's as an extra in the film "Sea of love" along with along with John Goodman. Standing next to both, in front of the camera, and off on 2 different days, I can say that Al is 5'5".
And that I know because thats how tall I am.

I saw his latest 2007 movie called "88" and here's a screenshot...he looks 1.65cm with shoes! MY GOD he is super short, wtf happend to him?!

please look at it?
Franco said on 23/Mar/07
after reading here i pulled out my dvd or DOG DAY AFTERNOON.....

and the part where he is walking in the street screaming trying to get the crowd he looked so short i was wondering wtf is going on, he look as short as 5'1 !!!!! gotta be camera effect for sure.

if i gotta be honest, i saw him during the filming of MERCHANT OF VENICE here in ITALY and he had his usual formal dress and very obvious shoes (lifts!), my mom who is 5'6 was eye 2 eye with him when she went to ask for an autograph.

today ALPACINO is a weak 5'5 and he used to be a weak 5'6 in the early days.
there's nothing more to it, it is the truth, as such i consider the 5'6 given in this site correct. ;)

I've seen him on three seperate occasions, he goes to the same dentist as me. The last time I saw him was back in September of 2005 when I was 13 and 5'5", and he wasn't noticibly taller, I'd say 5'6" is about right.
AL said on 2/Mar/07
Pacino s proper height was probarbly just touching the 5ft 6 mark.
These days he could be a bit under that.
I ve also been told in the book he wore lifts in many films.
leonari said on 24/Feb/07
eah in godfather he wore lifts thatsa veryknown fact!!
Chris said on 24/Feb/07
He definitely looks 5' 6" in The Godfather films, nowadays a bit shorter.
Anthony said on 23/Feb/07
I highly doubt Al was ever over the 5'5 range. I can see him as a morning 5'6 in his prime, but after watching "Dog Day Afternoon" and "Heat" this week, he doesn't look over 5'5 to me. I can believe 5'4 nowadays.
the shredder said on 23/Feb/07
Yep tall guy ! Pacino was NEVER near 5 ft 7 ! 5'5 now , 5'6 ABSOLUTELY MAX
at peak ! Even De Niro said he was alot taller then him ! Why would a 5 ft 9ish guy say that about a 5'6 - 5'7 guy ??? Because Pacino is about 5'5 !
tall guy said on 21/Feb/07
this guy is quite short, but virtually no one admits to being shorter than 5-7 its like some kind of actor minimum, but he was certainly shorter maybe 5-5ish these days
G-unit said on 19/Jan/07
He looked great in carlito's way, he looked 5'8 in that movie. In godfather he looked like a 5'7 guy. Nowadays he looks like a 5'6 guy.
UNK said on 18/Jan/07
He looks about 5'4" in "Two for the money". His character makes references to him being short, and says that his movie dad was 5'0".

MacConaughey and Rene Russo tower him in ever scene.
UNK said on 10/Jan/07
I think he has always struggled with 5'6". A healthy man shouldn't lose more than .5-1" by Al's age. Women usually lose more height than men as they get old. I'm not saying men don't lose height but there shouldn't be significant height loss, unless you have a bone disease, before 75 yrs old or so.
Felix said on 10/Jan/07
McMurphy Al is easilly 0.5-1 inch shorter than Michelle.
anonymous said on 9/Jan/07
Al does not have good posture. Maybe in his prime but not now. He looks shorter than 5'6. It happens to the best of us as we get older.
McMurphy said on 9/Jan/07
In Scarface (1983) and Frankie and Johnny (1991) he looked about the same height as Michelle Pfeiffer who is 5'6 or so maybe he was about 5,6 at the time.
