I saw the Morse episode again last night and no way did grumpy Alun look 5ft10. He can have 5ft9.75.

Alun starred in my favourite dramatisation of Oliver Twist, starring as Agnes's father, hence Oliver's grandfather.

I'm watching the 'Inspector Morse' episode 'Happy Families' and Morse's immediate superior, aptly named Superintendent Strange, (the late James Grout) who is always giving Morse a dressing down 😝, is on leave, leaving Alun Armstrong in charge.

With the wiping out of all three male members of an eminent family, Alun's Superintendent is getting impatient, and blames Morse, taking him off the case. Morse shouts 🗣️ "Get out of my house. GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!"

That spurs Morse on even more, and he solves the mystery via the spotting of a book, having been mocked something frightful by two members of the gutter press for his pastimes of reading and listening to classical music.

There is a noticeable difference between John Thaw and Alun, but it isn't more than around one and a half inches, so I think I'll plump for 5ft9.75. At that time, John looked around 5ft8.25 I reckon - possibly a bit more.

Yes, Alun does wear shoes. He can't be more than 5ft9 now, and as there is just the one box, that's what he gets!

If Alun is 5ft10, then Sean Harris HAS to be 6ft.

I am watching them together in a film called 'Possum' and Sean is far taller than Alun. Alun's sole mission in this is to bring back a terrible experience that a vulnerable Sean has endured as a boy, and re-live it over and over again. He is playing perhaps the nastiest part I have ever seen him play; he starred as a hooligan in 'Prime Suspect 73' - but the part he plays in this is worse. He is unkempt and cruel, but as I haven't reached the end yet, I don't know what he did to earn a living as a younger man; he might even have been one of Sean's teachers.

I can see the height difference though, but as he's so slobbish, he might be playing the sort of person who can't even be bothered with footwear, so for that reason, I'll leave the box blank for now and get back when I have come to a more decisive conclusion. I don't think he'll be getting quite as much as 5ft10 this time round!

Alun has appeared in so many productions over many, many years! They have been everything from film classics to authority figures, in 'Inspector Morse' for instance; the episode 'Happy Families', was on TV last week and a couple of days later Alun was actually playing a 'baddie' in the new series 'Prime Suspect 73'! What a contrast it is to see him being a threatening, violent thug who is in prison!
I prefer him in his nicer parts, but I bet he's having the time of his life! Good luck to him!

He was also Agnes and Rose's father in my all-time favourite version of 'Oliver Twist'! It is in that production that I realized he looked quite tall! (I am not a watcher of 'New Tricks'). He starred in 'Onegin' with Ralph Fiennes and looked almost as tall as Ralph's 5ft11. Yes, all these fantastic classics and suddenly Alun plays a swearing, nasty piece of work in 'Prime Suspect 73'! What a contrast! He didn't seem to look much, if at all, smaller either, so for that reason he gets 5ft10 from me.
