In hard times he appears shorter to 6'1" Robert Tessier, but definitely not that much shorter. Maybe he wears lifts, otherwise he's much taller than 5 ft 7.5

I read some where that Bronson had a height complex. Look at his shoes in the Death Wish movies. It Looks like hes wearing lifts to me. No more than 5'7.
glenn said on 15/Dec/07
he did look 5-9 most of the time.and on occasion 5-10.never saw him.

Everyone around the Hanover/Lebanon NH/Windsor VT area saw Bronson in person for years. I saw him, up close. Look-he was maybe 5-7 if that. He was solidly buildt but he was NOT 5-9 or taller, hate to break it too you.

He always looked in a good shape, but I´d have bet he was no less than 5 ft. 9 or a bit more. Evidently, I may be wrong. Though, a great actor with strong personality, showing a good presence.

I hate to repeat myself, but ppl who think that Mr. Bronson is taller than 5'8'' should watch the Dirty Dozen especially look at the lineup scene. Breakout with Robert Duvall and the Magnificent Seven. There is also a lot pics showing that Charles Bronson is 5'7'' - '5'8''. Also ppl who saw him always stated that he was a petit guy.

Borgnine was 5-9 to 5-10.Yul was 5-8 to 5-10.
Lmeister said on 1/Aug/07
I agree he wasn't 5'6'', but 5'8'' - 5'9'' then Yul Brynner must have been 5'9''- 5'10'' and Ernest Borgnine must have been 6'0'' - 6'1''. This is a very accurate listing.
Glenn said on 1/Aug/07
He wasnt 5-6.but he wasnt 5-10.he was 5-8 or 5-9.
TJ said on 31/Jul/07
He looked closer to 5'10 in Kid Galahad with Elvis, but then there aren't many scenes where you can see a categorical shot of them next to each other and head to foot. No way was he 5'6 though as Lmeister's CV anecdote suggests.
Lmeister said on 31/Jul/07
I read some pages of his bio and It was pointed out that he put 5'11'' to his CVs and audition forms, but in reality was almost 5'' inches shorter.

Bronson always looked like an average height guy in everything he did.
glenn said on 8/Apr/07
i agree al.thats a good possibilty.
al said on 7/Apr/07
I think bronson was a little taller than 5ft 8.
say just touching 5ft 9
anonymous said on 25/Mar/07
In "once upon a time in the west" he was looking pretty close to 5`8.
AL said on 2/Mar/07
Maybe he stood just under 5ft 10 in height.
He was always round the 5ft 9 mark through most of his career.

R-70 most actors of those days were no taller than Bronson. It is wrong to think that actors are usually tall, in fact most are short to average. Back in the 40s and 50s anyone of about 5'8'' or more would be a 6 footer in official publicity.

yes, it does, mere shadows of themselves, "Hard Times" is one of my favorite movies, Bronson i believe was in his mid 50's (when in "Hard Times")and physically looked great. I remember a picture in the National Enquierer showing Bronson being in a wheel chair, he was close to the end and looked already dead, his eyes unfocused, really sad. We all age and it ain't pretty sometimes, Cary Grant seemed the exception!

interesting R-70 and Lmeister.

In the 1950's and early 1960's Bronson played bit parts next to tall film stars like Gary Cooper.
Next to these stars, an American of the average height
(5-7 or 5-8) of those days looks rather short. Even today, the average American is "only" 5-9,according to "Scientific American".
So, Bronson seems to have been of average height for his generation, but not compared with Hollywood actors.
My impression is, after Bronson became a star in the mid 1960's, co-actors of similar height (as Robert Duvall) were choosen, so the audience should get the impression that Bronson has got the height of an average Hollywood acor.
Lmeister said on 11/Aug/06
Hmm there is a scene in Breakout where he is next to Robert(5'9.5'')Duvall. Duvall isn't wearign shoes and Bronson is wearing high heeled boots and still Bronson was only one inch taller. Bronson's peak height was 5'7.25'' tops.
Lmeister said on 10/Aug/06
Come on Rob...Like Frank2 said 5'7''
Glenn said on 10/Aug/06
I agree.5-7 or 5-8.Ill settle with 5-7.
Frank2 said on 9/Aug/06
Charles was 5'7" I stood right next to him when we spoke. He also had a slightly higher heel on one shoe since he suffered from a short leg.
Lmeister said on 9/Aug/06
Just watched Breakout last night. In that movie he looks like a solid 5'10'' with cowboy boots = )
Lmeister said on 8/Aug/06
In White Buffalo Charles looks like 5'7''. Not 5'6'' not 5'10'' Charles Bronson is 5'7''.
Rick said on 4/Aug/06
Hmmm ! He looks around 5 cms taller than Liv ullmann in " De la part des copains" and Liv looks pretty tall for a woman, certainly more than 170 ( she looks clearly taller than Catherine Deneuve in " Speriano che sia femmina", for exemple).
Lmeister said on 21/Jul/06
Rob U downgraded Yul Brynner back to 5'8'' as I recall he looks an inch taller than Charles Bronson in that promo shot + all the comments about him being 5'7''. Maybe time to downgrade Mr Bronson???

Just watched Death Wish 3. In one scene they put Bronson against a height chart. On first glimpse he hits 5'11", but it's probably more a case of the angle they put the camera at and his distance from the wall. Looks like he could be hitting 5'9 1/2", 5'10" in reality on the chart (with shoes on). So something in his shoes perhaps?
Frank P said on 6/Apr/06
5"6-7, no more than that. Dirty Dozen he's the shortest guy in the lot. Hard Times same thing.

Here's Bronson with James Coburn: Click Here
By the time of this photo both men had each lost about an inch in height. Coburn was roughly 6'1" and Bronson was about 5'6". Neither man was well when this photo was taken and both would die shortly after.

I enjoyed that thanks.he was a sweet man I never an airport in 1993 my friends approached him to sign photos, when a airport greeter said "dont sign for them, they are dealers" and Bronson shot back "so what,if I want to sign,Ill sign, besides Ive got nothing better to do waiting for my luggage". A true gentleman.

I worked for the Camas Prairie Railroad back in the mid 1970s when they were filming Breakheart Pass, much of which was filmed on that railroad. So I was well aware that Charles Bronson and other big names were in town. I ran into Bronson in a jewelry store in Lewiston, Idaho, the largest town on that railroad line, and the location of the railroad's headquarters, switch yard, repair shops etc. I passed him in an aisle, not more than 6 inches from him. I'm 5' 8", and he appeared to be a little shorter than me, certainly no taller. After seeing how they always portray him as a tough guy, I couldn't believe he was so small. I'd say your guess of 5' 7" is accurate (assuming normal shoes, which I didn't notice). If he's not 5' 7", I'd believe 5' 6" before I'd believe 5' 8".

I also used to see Bronson around the Lebanon NH area. He was real common in Ames, K-Mart, bars, etc. Not a nice guy. You could get him to talk if he needed to go around you on a dirt road or if he wanted to buy a TV or something, usually carried wads of One's (!) and would complain about the price of TV's etc he was buying. He was maybe my height(5-7). He is a fave star but as a person wasn't easy to be around.

I just watched the charles bronson Movie "hard times" and he appears shorter than most actors in the movie, as well as eye level to Jill Ireland. Theres no way hes more than 5'7.

Interesting I never became interested with Bronson until a week ago while watching The Dirty Dozen and saw the scene in which the dozen have to line up via height order and Bronson places himself towards the bottom. What was even more revealing was that I noticed the guy next to him who was supposedly meant to be shorter actually had maybe half an inch or more on him. It was strange because in The Great Escape without thinking too much about it I took him as a strong 5'11"er. Seriously he looks no taller than 5'7 1/2".
TJ said on 22/Oct/05
He looks only an inch or two shorter than Elvis in Kid Galahad and only around thre inches shorter than Lee Marvin in a pic of the two together. I think you were right with 5'10. That or he wore very flattering footwear.
Lmeister said on 8/Oct/05
At least I see more than one cm difference between Charles Bronson and Yul Brynner. I think that Charles stood 5'7.5'' max.
talker said on 2/Oct/05
In "Vera Cruz" Charlie looks his true height 5'7".He is probably the shortest guy in there.Borgnine is average in there about 5'11",not looking short even next to Gary Cooper.
Lmeister said on 25/Sep/05
Correction to my comment. Charles seemed more than 2 inches shorter than Telly Savalas not Ernest Borgnine. Bronson looks really short in the beginning of the Dirty Dozen during the line up scene. After that scene there is no full body shots of him...
Lmeister said on 24/Sep/05
In "the Dirty Dozen Bronson" appears shorter than Ernst Borgnine. I really do think that Charles was 5'7.5''. There is no way that he would have reached 5'10'' without boots.

From a 1996 posting on Showbiz Newsgroup: "Charles Bronson: Lives in my hometown. Countless run-ins. He'd run around town a lot if another movie star was in the area for filming, etc. and getting attention. Had a reputation for being very unfriendly. I used to participate in horse shows at his home, he's a serious equestrian, so he knows me personally. When I see him I say hello, he'll ignore me. If I see him and I don't say hello, he'll say hello. Strange man. BTW, he's a lot shorter than you'd imagine, only
about 5'7"
John said on 24/Jul/05
According to "The Washington Post", Bronson was only ever 5'7 at his peak. I think the "5'10" listing was untrue, and should be corrected here.
talker said on 12/Jul/05
Bronson was around 5'7'',its obvious in his early movies before he became a star and studios had to make him look taller.
Danjo said on 5/Jul/05
In one early biography, he was listed as 5'7", not the 5'10" given here.
