I now want to show what sort of body it was that carried this brain about and supplied it with blood and obedient protection. By 1887, it had become a scandalously skinny body. I was five foot five and always I weighed less than eight stone. My proper weight should have been 9st. 11 lbs, but I was generally nearer to seven, and that in my clothes.

I remembered that because it was the 13th and I wondered if it was a Friday. It wasn't. It was a Tuesday. ⏳

Sorry - that should have been the 13th August, 1946 and not the 2nd.

I omitted to leave HG Wells' dates, so here they are:

He was born on the 21st September, 1866 and passed over on 2nd August, 1946.

RIP Herbert and thanks for all the lovely tales, which will never cease to fascinate people, young and old alike. I started getting into his work at the age of nine and was instantly hooked!

Was he generationally close to average, I suspect still a couple inches under average.

To look at his face here, you wouldn't think that HG Wells was in any way underweight. Thinness tends to show primarily in the face, but the picture here is that of a healthy individual. I can't see him in the photo weighing much below 137 pounds, and so as the writer had no reason other than to discuss the truth, I'd say he's had plenty of opportunities to eat his way up to a healthy weight when this was taken. Perhaps Herbert was around half way through his 80 years (minus 23 day) when he was photographed here.

⭐ There used to be a place in Bromley High Street - in the former branch of Allders, I think - where you'd be able to see the birthplace of Harold George Wells. It was situated in a specially cordoned off part of the superstore. When the shopping centre 'The Glades' started to be built at the beginning of this century/end of last century, Allders was knocked down and repositioned in the new shopping centre. I'll have to snoop about next time I'm in Bromley to see if Wells still has a place of remembrance.

I knew HG Wells wasn't terribly tall, so his listing of 5ft5 doesn't come as a big surprise. I thought he was 5ft6!

5ft5.25.
