Hi, Keith, and Viper, you're right. Layne was easily 6', or more, even after deterotiang post mortem- even saying those words gross me out. The above photo has him placed behind everyone. Jerry is very tall- at least 6'2" (sorry, I'm American and wish we used the metric system).

Viper, i agree with you 80% of the time, but not now.
Take a look at Cantrell and Hatfield at 0:12 (Click Here), they're almost twins. I think between 6'1-6'1.5" is his height, but it may be wrong.

Maybe the best comment I've seen for a last time on celebheights, totally YES!
Layne was an damaged person with clearly and beautiful soul.
"Down in a hole" is one of the most greatest, strongest and timeless song that you'll ever heard.

I'm here once again to defend Layne and debunk the rumors. Please, realize, his post-mortem weight was just that- post-mortem. As a student of anatomy and the medical field, I can assure you that after two weeks, weight will decrease due to nature's process. Also, as I said, accountable witnesses mention over and over his bone pain/deterioration and decreased his stature over time. He was not even able to go upstairs in his own condo toward the end of his life. I said earlier he used a cane, but, I was very tired while typing- I meant he used a walker-type of instrument. The coroner even measured him at 6', or there about. Sean and Mike Starr- I'd guess about 5'10" or average height. Jerry was (at his peak), at least 6'2". Sometimes I think, psychologically, Layne wanted to hide (during photo shoots, or videos). If you think about it- rolling his eyes, wearing sunglasses, sitting, standing, or being placed, behind his band mates... He wanted to shine (as he should have for that voice), but the attacks about the honesty of his addiction made him a target. That seemed to drive him to withdraw from society and friends. Drugs did not kill this man. Shame did. He was the perfect scapegoat, along with Cobain, for the war against drugs. Thankfully, our society is finally opening their eyes about the reality of addiction, and not DEMONIZING someone who is sick. What we do not understand, we fear. And, "grunge" was the perfect allegory for the "evils" of drugs.

Cantrell looked pretty tall.

I can easily buy 6-2 for him

I hate to keep posting here, but, Layne was definitely over 6', and even toward his demise. Police an d coroner reports state this. All you have to do is see how they placed him in professional photoshoots. Even the photo used above (no offense!) has him looking shorter than Mike Starr and Sean Kinney, who are probably average height. He was taller than both, which is documented by other photos. Plus, during Facelift and Dirt, he's over 6', which makes me wonder how tall Jerry Cantrell is. I'm thinking around 6'2", or about They were really similar in many ways.. reflective tattoos, similar drug abuse, AMAZING HARMONIES- which is the most important. Again, as was told by by relatives, Layne had a bone disorder toward the end of his life which led to him using an assistive cane. The weight that keeps circulating is post-mortem. Please, please stop. I think he'd be 150, or more, when healthier, but he was a chain smoker, too. Anyway, I need to stop. I feel like this is so disrespectful of his life and legacy.

Watching him perform I wouldn’t have guessed under 6ft

Christian, that’s what his autopsy had him at. Obviously the result of years of hardcore heroin addiction just ravaging his body. Appetite is pretty much non-existent but you’re still able to function at some level. The last known photos of him were taken maybe 3 years before he died and he looked exceptionally bad then, 125lbs maybe...can’t imagine what he looked like at in the high two digits!

@ Christian - What a terrible tragedy. I've checked out how old Layne was and he was only 34. His autopsy revealed that he died of a mixture of heroin and cocaine - such a tragic waste.

RIP Layne XXX 🕯️

There's no "now" unfortunately. He's been dead for nearly 20 years.

Strange how the Police reported him being 6'1 when they found him, did they somehow measure his body for some reason or what's up with that?
Christian 6'5 3/8" said on 14/Aug/20
Wow, only 86? Even if it wasn't from drug OD, he would've still likely to have died, just from being that underweight.
PatB said on 13/Aug/20
Thank you for making this page rob I always feel Layne is one of the least represented in grunge despite being one of the best (the best in my opinion). you think he is 5 11-1/2? I’ve noticed in some pictures he looks very tall, taller than jerry and others he is almost mike Starr’s height is this because of his posture?
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 13/Aug/20
He actually weighed 86lbs when he died! After he left Alice he really started to go down hill...
Bianca Allaine said on 12/Aug/20
I would definitely say he was over 6'0" at his peak. It's been said that toward the end of his life, he had severe bone pain and issues, so I'm sure that affected his height. I believe the final autopsy report listed him at 6'0" or 6'1/4" (or so) and about 85 lbs, but, we have to remember he was found weeks after his passing, which would change his weight. Even his mother said he "looked so tiny" when discovered. Also, his weight fluctuated tremendously during his life. I'd say when he was healthier, he was at least 150, possibly more. He said when he went through workout phases, he'd go to extremes to bulk up because he's that kind of person. I also read he chose drugs (crack and heroin) more than alcohol because he was concerned if he just drank, he'd get "fat". I'm not convinced the license is real, but it could be. Also, remember, in most states you can keep older photos of yourself when you renew your license. That picture of him looks like him circa 1990, or so, when his hair was longer (Facelift era). The address listed was his condo which he didn't buy until years later. Just my two cents. He's my favorite singer, so I research a lot. :) Another note, his birthday, August 22nd, is officially "Layne Staley Day" in Seattle. Let's remember his talents and not focus on his health issues.

Roughly the same as me when I was in high school for a time.

I was 6-0 120 and looked like him
Mickie said on 12/Aug/20
His drug issues were why is weight was so low. 182 cm is arguable, I would've accepted anything from 181 - 184 tbh. Great singer.

That's cool, his written weight there is 130 or 150? I'm not sure exactly.
Keith 5'10 said on 11/Aug/20
A friend of mine was 100 pounds at strong 5'7" and he looked easily 20 or 30 pounds more.
Layne maybe was this weight due to his drug issues, 182cm for me.
Miss Sandy Cowell said on 11/Aug/20
8st13? That's very underweight and I seriously hope he's put on a bit of weight now. What if he got ill? He'd have no reserves to fall back on.

5ft11.5 and a nice, nutritious meal!

Always saw Layne as a weak 6ft.

Brilliant vocalist.
Arch Stanton said on 11/Aug/20
A tortured soul twas Layne. Some of their lyrics super dark. Dirt is one of the best albums of the 90s. Seems about right.
Christian 6'5 3/8" said on 11/Aug/20
Why should Rob list him as 6'0" just based off a license?
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 11/Aug/20
Rob, then how about 5ft11¾?
Editor Rob
That might be possible
Mickie said on 10/Aug/20
Good addition to the site.
Christian 6'5 3/8" said on 10/Aug/20
Looked a lot heavier than just 125 on his license, although we can only see his shoulders and higher.
Hotpots said on 10/Aug/20
Yeah that’s about right
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 10/Aug/20
Listed 6ft and 6ft1 in places. Honestly would have gone with somewhere between...never would have guessed this low. Super skinny guy though so naturally looked taller.

Rob why not 6ft as listed on his license?
Editor Rob
From what I've seen, I feel he could be just shy of 6ft
Animus said on 10/Aug/20
Fascinating that he can weigh 125lbs at 5'11½ and appear reasonably healthy. I believe Christian Bale weighed around that range and he looked like a living corpse, if you'll pardon the oxymoron. I'm slightly taller than this guy and when I weighed 150lbs when I was 22 yrs/old and I was on the move 15 hrs a day (working in a warehouse, doing theatre, partying, exercising, etc.) I looked as lean as was healthily possible for me. I don't think it would be possible for me to weight that little without being largely sedentary and completely devoid of energy. It might be partly related to bone structure (wrist size and ankle size are pretty good indicators hereof). If you have more bone mass, not only will you weigh more because of the bone, you will also carry more muscle mass naturally.
