Watch Trading Places and you'll see this guy pushing 80 was still a good 2in taller than Denholm Elliott (still 5ft10 range at 60 and more than 1in taller than Eddie Murphy) 6ft0-0½ range by then so peak had to have been at least 6ft1 and probably more

Rob, where does this 'publicised height' come from?

Although Ralph Bellamy never got the recognition other great actors have enjoyed his performance as Franklin Delano Roosevelt in Sunrise At Campobello netted him a Tony award an a Best Actor Oscar nomination Tony Randall described Ralph the best when he nailed him in 1960 as What's My Line? mystery guest when Tony told Bellamy "NOBODY can play FDR like you!" Quite true! Yet Ralph also spent time as a "Wesley Lau" type "To Tell The Truth" "swing hurler" and even host! Truly he deserved his 1984 Lifetime Achievement Oscar! He was 6' at peak.

He looked around Richard geres height in pretty woman no was was he just under 6ft 2 peak unless he'd shrank at least 3 inches by 1990 my guess is around 6 foot peak and 5ft 11 in the 90's

This has to be off. He was probably 6ft0½ range by Trading Places (2in on Don Ameche) but at peak 6ft1½ is more likely, IMO.

Rob, maybe at the very least give him back 6ft1?

Bellamy actually looked 6ft2 if Grant was 6ft1
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 30/Jun/15
Grant could have been somewhere between 6ft0½-1 lowest but Bellamy was at least 6ft1, if not 6ft1½ at peak.
Sam said on 29/Jun/15
No you can't rule it out per say, but I picture both as not under 6'0.75", kind of similar peak to guys like Gordon Ramsay, Harrison Ford and Jon Hamm.
Arch Stanton said on 27/Jun/15
You can't rule out 6'0.5 for Grant too though.

Rob, could you also add to his credits Dance, Girl, Dance, Man Against Crime, Sunrise at Campobello, The Professionals and Pretty Woman.

I still think Bellamy is closer to 6'1" (which would split the difference between the quotes above). In shots like this Cary Grant and Bellamy are both standing pretty evenly and they look dead-even.

Rob, there's no way you can have Cary Grant 6ft1 if this guy is at 6ft0½.

You even said yourself that Bellamy might have edged him out?

A bit taller than Cary Grant. A couple of inches shorter than Gary Cooper. Nothing under 1`85 for Bellamy IMO
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 17/Nov/14
Bellamy looks a solid 6ft1½, if not 6ft2 in those picture.
Sam said on 1/Oct/14
This is an underlisted guy IMO. At times, he seemed like he could have a hair on Cary Grant, who generally really did look 185 cm IMO.

Also, I seem to remember him looking within an inch of Lon Chaney Jr. in The Wolf Man.

"Ralph Bellamy height: 6ft 1.25in (186cm)"

In Trading Places he was probably closer to 6ft.

Nobody could do Franklin Delano Roosevelt like Ralph Bellamy did in Sunrise At Campobello. He deserved an Oscar for it,but he did so many great movies and spent about 10 years on To Tell The Truth,as well. (He got Tom Poston on that series! Hosted it a little, too.) No one dominant Bellamy movie genre, but equally adept on The Eleventh Hour TV series and on stage. One of a kind. Took his death hard, but not like when Merlin Olsen,Annette Funicello,Dave Diles, and especially John Lennon died, but a great actor.

And again at 23:50. if anything Cary Grant looks a bit taller.

Rob check out 14 minutes in Click Here Near 187 or 6'2?? Not a chance. I can't see him taller than Cary Grant can you?
Editor Rob
6ft 1.5 might be possible, he may edge Cary out from some bits I watched, but they generally looked very close there.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 9/Dec/13
he was near 6ft2
Sam said on 6/Dec/13
Yeah, he was a bit over Cary Grant, was almost an inch taller than Ronald Reagan and close to Errol Flynn's height...a convincing 6'1.5" at peak.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 27/Dec/12
Somewhere in the 6ft1-6ft2 range at peak, probably 187cm
Sam said on 8/Dec/11
I agree with Jake's assessment of Bellamy's height. He was fractionally taller than Cary Grant (listed 6'1") and fractionally shorter than Errol Flynn (listed 6'2") which indicates he was 6'1.5"
jake, 1.82 m- 1.83 m said on 7/Dec/11
I think he was 6ft 1.5in (1.87 m) at his peak, he looked very tall in Rosemary's Baby.

If Grant was 6'1" (as is the popular opinion, outside of Frank2's), Ralph Bellamy was probably 6'1.5" when young. He seemed to have been a smidgen taller in some scenes with Grant and about the same size in others.
In this photo, Grant is leaning, so he looks shorter than usual:

In this one Bellamy looks taller than Errol Flynn:

But then appears shorter here:

Bellamy was most likely an even 6', maybe a half an inch taller when he was young. In the 1940 film His Girl Friday he was just about the same height as Cary Grant. Later he was about 5'11" which was about the time of Trading Places. Denholm Elliot was roughly 5'10" at that time. Murphy was at the most about 5'9", that is, unless he wore big shoes. Don Ameche was about 5'10" and was another actor who never lost height as he got older. I used to think he was about 5'9" until I realized that Tyrone Power was not 5'10", but was at least 5'11". Ameche was always an inch shorter than Power.
