I was not actually a fan of Pink Floyd a mere 6 years ago - so I haven't seen it before, but looking it up on youtube now, I do wish I could have been there. Wasn't even alive during the Ummagumma days but I sure am jealous of anyone who could have been at a Floyd concert then. I do like the live version of "Astronomy Domine" from those days: Click Here, though it's strange that Rick sings the low vocals in post-Syd version of the song when he didn't with Syd, especially considering David's voice is lower than Rick's. I mean just listen to Rick's vocals at the end of one of his compositions here, I'd wager his voice is a bit higher than the average person of his height:

I'm a fan of "The Madcap Laughs" for sure, especially the song "Long Gone". Great high and low vocals on that one from Syd. I was surprised to find that Syd painted the floor for the shoot with just the help of "Iggy the Eskimo" (real name Evelyn), who appears on many photos from the shoot.

Nice talking with you as well Sandy.

@ Nile Song - If you haven’t done so already, check out the cover of the Floyd album Meddle. It depicts the boys at their long-haired, rock star-like best!

The cover of Ummagumma is probably the best one to check out their heights. I had a boyfriend, who is sadly no longer with us, who saw the Ummagumma concert while he was in his early(ish) teens. Lucky boy, don’t you think? His mates didn’t half envy him!

@ Nile Song - Hello there and thank you for the interesting reply and fantastic pictures, Nile. Every Floyd fan will be intrigued.

While watching a Dave Gilmour concert on Sky Arts the other night, Rick Wright did indeed look the same height as Dave. Both musicians stood next to each other and the evidence was stark staring obvious, hence I picked up on their heights. It was an opportunity too good to miss.

Have you seen the Roger Waters’ ‘Us And Them’ concert? Apart from being excellent musically, it was just so funny -
in a controversial sort of way. He has signs onstage with rude words on them, and the audience was in hysterics! Originally, I saw it on Sky Arts, but then I found it on YouTube, and I sent it to my geezer, having described to him how great it was. Roger looks tall, and still does to this day.

Have you seen the covers of Syd Barratt’s albums Barrett and The Madcap Laughs? They give nothing away as to his height, but are SO worth listening to. The first time I heard them, I thought, “Syd hasn’t lost any of his weirdness, but it’s PROGRESSED!”

I recently found 5ft9 for Nick Mason, BTW. The drummer was doubtless that bit taller in his youth. I believe Syd was 5ft11, yes!

Nice to chat with you, Nile Song, and here’s wishing you a very Happy Easter.

Richard Wright does seem kind of tall, definitely over 5'10 I'd say, at least 5'10.5 peak. 5'10.75 seems right because of his poor posture. Even in his later years he still looked ~5'10.25 to me. Not much shorter than Gilmour - I'm kind of surprised he claimed 5'10.
Syd Barrett looked slightly taller than Wright in most photos, but it's hard to tell. I think about 5'11, like he claimed, is right, 5'10.75 at the least.
Nick Mason looked around 5'9.5 peak to me. I remember thinking shorter, but he doesn't seem THAT much below his 5'10 claim.
Roger Waters peak at 6'1.75 sounds about right considering he always is significantly taller than the rest of Pink Floyd. I think 6' 1/4 (or even 1/2) sounds about right, terrible posture could have made him seem similar to Colbert but he quite obviously isn't in my opinion: Click Here

I’m watching a fantastic programme on the history behind the Pink Floyd album ‘Wish You Were Here’. It’s absolutely fascinating and I’ve never seen it before, though I have seen others about the album.

I had no idea that musician Roy Harper sang the song ‘Have A Cigar’ from the aforementioned album.

Roy has been a tremendous influence musically on heaps of big rock stars. In fact, Led Zeppelin had a song called ‘Hats Off To Harper’ on their third album.

I’ve found 5ft11 for Roy. Please, Rob, could Roy Harper have a page? He turns 82 on the 12th of June, and started his musical career in 1964.

THANKS ROB! 🎩

⭐️ In fact, Harry seems shorter than Rodge, and when young, Roger could easily have hit 6ft2 in the morning.
Harry’s eyes are lower than Roger’s…..

Harry is still tall though, but he probably doesn’t think so when he hangs out with brother, Jack, who’s HUGE!

I woke up from my afternoon nap with the early Floyd song ‘Lucifer Sam’ in my head, so I played it, followed by ‘Matilda Mother’ and then the chaotic ‘Interstellar Overdrive’, which rather reflected my bad dream, and could have been its soundtrack!

6ft1.75 peak evening height and 6ft0.5 today for the gorgeously musical Roger. Having his supersized sons pictured with him could well be lowering his perceived height.

🎼🎶😋

@ Arch Stanton - So would I have a lot to say if I wrote songs like he does!

Peak height - 6ft1.75 and today - 6ft0.5.

I can never tire of the Floyd!
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 24/Sep/22
Current height is hard to decipher but I wouldn’t bet on under 6ft and may still clear it when measured. 184cm isn’t impossible figure. Rubbish posture does make him look shorter.

Peak height though, a very solid 187cm guy at the minimum (more like 187.5-188cm, IMO). Skinny guy like him would easily get away with claiming 6ft3 from that mark. Giving him 6ft2 wouldn’t be met with objection either. No way just 6ft1
Arch Stanton said on 12/Aug/22
He still looked pretty tall sitting in the chair in the CNN interview, I still think of him as over 6 ft for some reason. Has a lot to say for himself doesn't he LOL.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 30/Jun/22
Wow, really down to 5ft11 now?

The full 6ft2 peak is still fair I think...
Qwerty555 said on 23/Jun/22
Rob, in the Late Show, Roger Waters looks as tall as Steve Colbert. I think 5’11” maximum. What do you think?
Editor Rob
Has Roger shrunk even more...or could he look 5ft 11 due to older and looser posture.

This afternoon I found a couple of clips from Roger’s brilliant ‘Us and Them’ concert, which I duly sent on to my boyfriend.

Since then, I’ve been inundated by Pink Floyd concerts, and I’ve been enjoying them immensely.

Now I’m wondering about the height of the late Richard Wright; he looks quite tall to me! I’ll have to check him out at some stage…..
Miss Sandy Cowell said on 11/Apr/22
I woke up this morning with the early Floyd song Matilda Mother in my head, so I played it, together with a few more songs from their 1967 album Piper At The Gates of Dawn. Another song is Lucifer Sam, a tale about a Siamese cat.

Not a bad song to have in one’s head when one ‘comes to’, as it were, especially considering I have no choice as to which songs get jammed in my head first thing!
Miss Sandy Cowell said on 3/Apr/22
Roger’s closing speech to his Dutch audience:

“I can’t thank you enough for the reception that you’ve given to this band and this music. We need the love that is in this room to spread gently all over the World if we’re going to have any chance of figuring out how to empathise with our fellow human beings enough to act collectively and to stop the pigs destroying this fragile and beautiful planet on which we live.

We do believe in human rights and we believe they should be equal for all our brothers and sisters all over the World, notwithstanding their ethnicity or religion or nationality, so that would include our brothers and sisters in Palestine.”

Well said, Roger.
Miss Sandy Cowell said on 3/Apr/22
I’ve spotted another guitarist who is taller than Roger.

Anyway, no one can say that this guy doesn’t bring his point across in no uncertain terms when he performs. The meaning of ‘Us and Them’ is abundantly clear.

🖕 I can think of another world leader who belongs in the pig bin….
Miss Sandy Cowell said on 3/Apr/22
No, it’s no good! I can’t tolerate the boredom of seeing the rest of the Emmerdale omnibus - not when I have the ‘Us and Them’ concert to see!

Wow! When Roger and his Band start the songs from their ‘Animals’ album, a huge image of Battersea power station appears, as depicted on the album cover, later followed by a floating pig. They had giant floating items when I saw their ‘The Wall’ concert at Wembley in 1980, so how much of a knockout do you think those from the 21st century are? By the way, this concert came from Amsterdam and is around a decade old. It kick-started with the song ‘Breathe’ from ‘Dark Side of the Moon’.

Roger still looks tall and I only spotted one member of his ensemble who was taller than him. The two-and-a-half hour spectacular FLEW by, such was its enjoyability factor.
Miss Sandy Cowell said on 2/Apr/22
This has to be the best televised concert I’ve EVER seen, so what was it like to actually be there?

‘Pigs’ from the Pink Floyd album ‘Animals’.
🐷🐖

Roger made no bones as to whom he was dedicating this song to, did he Donald?
😂👌🏼😀🖕

⭐️ If ever there was an age restricted concert, then this is it!
Miss Sandy Cowell said on 2/Apr/22

'On The Turning Away':

I played this tonight while sitting in the porch with my brush-tailed friends. There's a depiction of empty beds, indicating that all the soldiers were longer, 😢🛏️ so much of Pink Floyd covering the tragedies of the War.

The song has, "NO MORE turning away", which I thought rather appropriate for my foxies.

Miss Sandy Cowell said on 9/Oct/21
Hey, how about this then, folks? This morning at around ten minutes to four, I went out to feed my foxes. I couldn't believe my eyes when I opened the door - there were FIVE of them waiting patiently.

😂🦊🦊🦊🦊🦊😂

Included in the furry red mob was the naughty little loud one and he started running about all excitedly and yelling his doggy head off. I simply couldn't resist playing Pink Floyd's 'Dogs of War' - very appropriate indeed! That was followed by 'Dogs' from their album 'Animals', which has tuneful barking thrown in. 🐶🐺🦊🐕🐩

Roger gets 6ft2 for his peak and 6ft0.5 for today's height. I've lowered his today's height a bit because it would be unrealistic for a man of 78 to have only lost just over an inch, and I think the evidence is pictured above. I guess 6ft2 would be Roger's early afternoon height, but I'm not in the mood to get over-analytical on a Saturday morning!

This morning, I played 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' and 'Have A Cigar' while sorting out the recycling.

It didn't put my little fox friend off; in fact he quite liked it, 🦊👍 and I was able to take a couple of fuzzy photos of him, though his mate ran and hid. My cats are fond of Pink Floyd, but they don't like the Stranglers - far too rude and aggressive for their tender ears! 😾

Roger gets 6ft2 for his peak and 6ft0.5 for today's height. I think I went too high the last time, but I could never think too highly of Roger and his talent...

I had an overwhelming urge in the middle of last night's football match to listen to Pink Floyd's 'Pigs - Three Different Ones', so I did, waiting for the break, of course, as the match was getting too exciting for words! 🤭👌⚽2️⃣1️⃣

I felt a little hoarse after the match and I'm not blaming my singing along to the Floyd! 🐴

LOVE THIS GUY, and I thoroughly recommend his solo albums as well. Roger's feelings for his Dad have been immortalised through his thoughtful compositions. 😢

Arch Stanton said on 13/Jun/21
He can give a taller impression, but he's quite long limbed and long faced and slim which accentuates it. His sons look nothing like him, not even a slight resemblance! The one on the left looks like a coffin maker from an old western LOL.
Miss Sandy Cowell said on 4/Jun/21
Yesterday I watched for the first time the Pink Floyd video to the 1975 track 'Welcome To The Machine', from their Album 'Wish You Were Here', and many more besides, especially those from 'The Wall' and some amusing ones, including 'Pigs (Three Different Ones)' from their album 'Animals'.

Roger sure looked tall in concert. The band doesn't have any really short guys, but tall/medium ones. I saw them in the summer of 1980, when they performed 'Pink Floyd - The Wall', and when the film came out in late August/early September, 1982, I went with my friends to see it three times in a week. The film is really quite disturbing, and that includes Gerald Scarfe's drawings. Performed live, it was far more on the freaky side, with huge, animal-shaped balloons floating about and others besides. I envied my late boyfriend, who saw Pink Floyd perform 'Ummagumma' in the 60s, but I was far too young to go to concerts back then! (It was a live road show).

Roger gets 6ft2 for his peak and 6ft0.75 today. His son, Jack, makes Roger seem decidedly average!

I've been listening to Pink Floyd today, mainly tracks from 'The Wall' and 'Animals'.

I recommend Roger's solo project 'Amused to Death', and funny it is not. When I played it for my boyfriend round his place he said, "You're not gonna get this back!" So I bought him a copy, and at the same time, I sent one to my Dad, knowing he'd appreciate the seriousness of the topics Roger discusses through his vocalised essays.

This man's GOT to be one of the greatest creative geniuses of our time. You can't help but get sucked into what he's singing about.

I love listening to Pink Floyd, but you can feel this great man's pain at losing his Dad to The War. He doesn't only sing about his own torment either.

I'm playing their album Echoes, which is a compilation of their music, right from the 60s. Some of it can be quite shocking, but empathetic at the same time. I played a lot of Floyd when my boyfriend died. The song Comfortably Numb was of particular significance.

Roger gets 6ft2 peak and 6ft and half-an-inch for today. 😁🎶

On the way back from the Norfolk Coast yesterday, it was Pink Floyd all the way! We heard 'The Dark Side of the Moon' and 'Pink Floyd The Wall', and were both singing along. I'm listening to early Floyd right now, when Syd Barrett was doing the lead singing. The album is 'A Saucerful of Secrets' - and very trippy, as you can expect from music Syd Barrett had anything to do with!

Roger gets 6ft2 for yesteryear and 6ft1 for today. 😉👍

Thanks, Rob, for your verification!

When my friend Bert shaved his long beard off, my Mum thought that, not only did he look younger, but taller too. Standing next to me increased his perceived height as well, not that he needed it and he was a strong 6ft and I measured him in at 6ft1. That was before the days when I realized that you could genuinely vary that much in a day. I measured him in the morning and double checked: 6ft1.
Miss Sandy Cowell said on 12/Dec/19
@ Rob - Hey, there's a point! ☝️

I think there's a possibility that a long gnome-like beard gives the illusion of shortening a man's height. 😕
Editor Rob
Beards of thickness under the chin I do think can effect perceived height, and also proportions. I saw a guy the other day from a distance who looked stocky and very average, then up close he was 5ft 11, including his beard his head size looked 1 foot, which from a fair distance seemed to effect his look.
Miss Sandy Cowell said on 11/Dec/19

🦊 Correction Alert! 🦊

You probably didn't notice this minor detail, but I'm going ahead with the correction anyhow! 😉

That was supposed to be plus a quarter- inch instead of a half-inch. I must have had Bert's shoplifting cat on my mind when I wrote that!

While still on the subject of stupid medics and chemists, plus numerical skills or lack thereof, take in this little lot:

Firstly, a doctor of mine couldn't work out what January plus six months is while writing me a sick note, thinking it was June! Her face looked like she'd been chewing on a cocktail of bitter lemons and wasps....

Then there was the time I popped into the chemist next to Bromley South Station to pick up my prescription. The dispenser, proud of never having taken a day's sick leave in his life, asked me in French, "Quel tempts fait-il?"

I replied in English that, as he could see, it was raining. He was flummoxed because he'd actually asked, "What time is it?"

I said, "Oh, no no no no! That's "'Quelle heure est-il?'"

Then he pretended to be pleasantly surprised but really he was seething and sweating!

I should have bought him a copy of 'French for Dummies' for Christmas!

🎁😃🖕🍶💊💊🎄
Miss Sandy Cowell said on 28/Nov/19
I'd like to add another candidate to Roger's track 'Pigs'.

How about the ignorant chemist, who gave me half-strength painkillers and expected them all back this morning before giving me my full strength ones? What idiots! Of course I'm going to take them IN TWICE THE DOSE! Now my doctors want me down A&E in case I've overdosed. Pah! I might be only 5ft1 and weigh 98 and a quarter pounds, but I KNOW MY OWN LIMITS!

Roger, on the other hand, peaked at 6ft1.5, so I suppose the medical profession wouldn't have been quite so iffy about his possibility of overdosing. So that's what I'll give him for his peak height (+ a half-inch), and he can have 6ft0.5 for today's height.

🐖🐖🐖🐖

@ Rampage Clover - I love Syd Barrett's contribution to Pink Floyd! He was a complete genius, fun-loving, tripped-out nutcase, in the nicest possible way! I met someone called Chris who knew him and Peter Green. His guitar-playing was amazing, so I wasn't at all surprised when he told me that he'd played with Fleetwood Mac when on Top of the Pops in 1968.

He also told me that, before Peter Green did his vanishing act, he painted everything in his parents' house green! 👴🧓😂👍📗🍏♻️

@Rob, authors have also claimed 6'2 and 6'3. Why do you believe the one who says 6'1? 6'1.5 peak seems too low, if anything I'd have leaned on 189. OK he wasn't 6'3 or 6'4 but he looked a decent 6'2 peak I thought.
Editor Rob
there was another commenter a few years ago who said Roger had given 6ft 1 in another article, so to me it seems that is what he is claiming.
Danimal said on 25/May/17
Rob, why isn't this page updated for a before and after? He might be 6'2" today, but he was easily 6'3"-6'4" in his younger days. The man is well into his 70's now and has clearly lost height, as most men his age do, especially the very tall ones (you can see it in his upper back and neck which have curved).

@ demy - Hi! I'm thinking back to the picture of all 4 of them on the inside sleeve of the album 'Meddle' and I remember that they were impressively muscle-bound, each and every one, including Waters! I wouldn't exactly describe him as skinny-looking in that picture!
But I do see what you mean when he stood up! Very tall and gangly, it must have been difficult to maintain a healthy weight with a rock'n'roll lifestyle!
Waters is responsible for creating some of the best music and lyrics ever, both with Pink Floyd and on his own. I recommend his solo album 'Amused to Death.'
I knew he was tall, but not quite THAT tall! Too busy listening to his lyrics to speculate on anything other than what is going on in his mind! A brilliant and addictive brand of music; I never, ever tire of it!

Roger Waters: 6'02.50" - 6'03.00" (He is probably 6'02.00" even these days)

David Gilmour: 6'00.00" - 6'00.25" (About the same today maybe .25 inches shorter.

Nick Mason: 5'11.75" - 6'00.00" (Around 5'11.00" nowadays)

Richard Wright: 5'11.50" - 5'11.75"(Passed away around 5'11.00")

I can't make a proper assessment on Syd.

Sam said on 14/May/13
I agree. I think Plant never exceeded six foot in his barefeet. Hendrix could look lanky with long legs and big hands, it was kind of a shock to know like Lennon, McCartney, all of the Stones, Jim Morrison, etc. he was average height. My favorite guy of all time, Bob Dylan, is even shorter, Lennon looked lanky and big-boned next to Dylan. Waters literally towers above the rest because he was one of the few rock god-types to actually stand more than six feet tall.

True. First time I saw Hendrix Woodstock DVD for some reason I thought he was 6'3" range! His legs looked lanky in those flares.

I think, based on nothing but photographs and such, that John Lennon, Jim Morrison and Paul McCartney were all within the 176-180cm out of bed range in their heyday, and honestly I think Gilmour was on the shorter end of that range. Robert Plant was probably about 178-182cm out of bed and Waters probably about 184-188cm.

A lot of men tend to overestimate and/or lie to themselves about their height-- my whole life my dad told me he was 5'11" until I found some measurements of him which placed him at 175cm even(probably mid-day), or a hair under 5'9". The strange thing is I went on believing up until that point that he could well be an inch and a half or so taller than me.

Even I refer to myself as 5'10" more often than not when in reality at the end of the day I only stand 175.5cm, or 177cm out of bed.

He did look around 6'2" actually on Conan's show when he stood next to him in sneakers. The photo below though really makes him look 6'0.5"-6'1"!!! Its the Conan effect. I think he's about 188cm now, but when he was young he was at least 190 cm. In some photos he towers over Syd and the others.

Anyway Barrett is 180cm, not 178. I read it on a lot of magazines and books about Pink Floyd.

P.S. If there's a page about Waters, I think that also Syd Barret deserves a page about his height. Just a legend IMO.
The Truth said on 14/Mar/09
Roger Waters's real height:
185-186 cm at his "peak"
183-184 cm nowadays, due to a very bad posture.
So Roger Waters's height IS 6'1" approximately...
No way he's 6'3"...maybe with heels in the seventies...
However Chistopher Lee almost towered him in some recent photos, and he's 193-195 cm at his peak (and now he have a very bad posture too, due to his old age)

Finally, in my opinion:
Roger Waters 185 cm
David Gilmour 177 cm
Nick Mason 174 cm
Rick Wright 176 cm
Syd Barrett 178 cm (?)

I dunno...I don't think pictures are that accurate a way of determining people's exact heights. It sometimes depends on the angle, where people are standing, etc.

Anyway, Roger definitely looks shorter than he used to be. And he does have odd posture - usually looks a bit hunched over to me, even as a young man.

I've read 5'11" for Wright. As I've said before though, I can't really find a good picture with the whole group standing up straight on the same terrain, but if 6'4" for Waters and 5'11" for Wright are correct, I'd gather very roughly that Gilmour is 6'1-ish and Mason at being maybe 5'10"-5'11". I'm really not completely sure, though.

Although, how does Roger appear so much taller than Glenn in this photo, yet he only appears an inch or two taller than Clapton in some photos? But, Glenn says that Clapton is only about 5'9.5 max? Again, doesn't add up right. Waters' posture isn't that bad is it?
Anonymous said on 12/Feb/06
Something doesn't make sense if Roger is between 6ft2 and 6ft4 if we are to believe Glenn about Clapton (from the Clapton page):
"Glenn says on 28/Jan/06 [about Eric Clapton]
I've seen the guy 30 times.and have photo proof.5-9 and half tops.look at the cover to the blind faith cd.the cover where the group is on.not the rare original.clapton looks 5-7 to 5-9 next to ginger baker who I believe is 6-2."

Clapton played guitar on Roger's 1984 tour as well as a few other occasions and Roger doesn't really look much taller in photos next to Clapton. If Clapton really only is the "5-9 and half tops" that Glenn claims, then how can Waters be in the 6'3 range? Something doesn't add up then.
Tall Guy said on 11/Feb/06
