Considering Rob looks almost 5'8.5 , maybe he claims 5'9 currently.

I caught Brian playing a part in 'The Sweeney' the other day. Just as I was wondering if he was a regular cast member, my question was answered. He was shot! 😭
Doubtless at his peak height then, Brian gets 5ft9.75. Nowadays, I'd say he's 5ft8.25.
Nik Ashton said on 3/Feb/20
I wonder what he would claim for his current height!
Miss Sandy Cowell said on 25/Nov/19
Ooh! It's guessing time again, so today I'll give Big Brian with the Big Booming Voice* 5ft9.75 for his peak and 5ft8.25 for today's height. Yes, I've gone up for him by a quarter of an inch in each case.
* Big Booming Voice was used by Edmund Blackadder when he was trying to pump information out of a woman as regards the appearance of her executed husband. (Blackadder the Second, episode 'Head').

With a voice like Brian's, this actor will always be in demand. He's just taken the job as the voice-over on the entertaining dating show 'Take Me Out' with Paddy MacGuinness - and then he's always high on the priority list for adverts!
5ft9.5 peak and 5ft8 now. 😁👍

I met Brian in a train a couple of years ago. It was Summer and I was in a vest as it was scorching hot. I am a dedicated weight trainer, 6ft tall and a solid 16 stone. Well Brian was shorter than me but was huge in width. He was in a short sleeve shirt and his biceps were enormous. We talked about bodybuilding, boxing and we had a few arm wrestles. He was extremely strong and we shared a 2-2 draw, though in fairness I did let him win a couple of bouts haha!
Strong fella, booming voice and I would estimate around a comfortable 5’8.5. ,

Brian Blessed looks taller than Rob: Oh he's 5ft 8.
I see John Hurt in the "You May Be Interested" section, at least an inch shorter than Rob: 5ft 8.5.
Well Hurt has passed on, and I met Blessed 12 years ago and he's still going, though has lost more height in the last decade.

6 foot is really an absurd claim for a man of his height, he must have a larger than life ego.

Ha ha Rob! You have met the original father of the first-ever 'Blackadder', the one whose plans weren't quite so cunning as Baldrick's! 😂👍📺🐍
Back then, I'd have given him 5ft9, but his stature always made him come over as more. Now that's cunning!
He could look a big 5ft 9 range back then.

While I was trying to find out the height of a cast member of 'Z Cars' in order to compare him to Patsy Byrne, who was in an episode called 'Nuisance', I discovered that an extremely young-looking Brian Blessed was also in the series! Z Cars was from the 60's and early 70's.
What a surprise!

Brian didn't look even remotely undersized in 'The Black Adder', in which he played Richard the FOURTH! His favourite son, played by Robert East, seemed that bit taller than Rowan Atkinson, the son he thought so little of that he could never get his name right! Brian himself, the great bellower, looked and indeed was, young enough to be his full 5ft9.5.
So that's what the fictitious king gets from me - 5ft9.5 peak, 5ft8 now.
Mark Harrison said on 22/Aug/18

@ Nik - But not as tall as his voice would suggest!
That bear in his recent advert! He can't REALLY be riding it... can he?
Certainly, many voices are smaller in shorter people and vice versa. If that wasn't the case, people wouldn't be so surprised when a short person has a deep voice and a tall woman squeaks like a child!
I vote for Brian being 5ft9.25 peak and 5ft8 now!
Nik said on 18/Jun/18
@ Sandy Cowell - Wouldn't it be interesting if there were found to be links between various aspects of people's voices and their heights?'
Your perception of his height wasn't bad though, Brian has always been pretty tall for his age group!
said on 17/Jun/18
Rob how much do you think he weighed with you?
Sandy Cowell said on 9/Jun/18
@ Nik - I always thought that he was taller, probably because of his voice and overall appearance!
Nik said on 8/Jun/18
@ Sandy Cowell - Hi!
He ain't the smallest though, is he? It is great to post on this page for the first and second time and I agree with both your height estimates for him! I have to admit that he has never been tall but when he was younger he was above average!
Christian-6'5 3/8" said on 7/Jun/18
6'0" is one crazy claim for a guy his height. I'd be pretty surprised if no one ever called him out on it.
Sandy Cowell said on 7/Jun/18
Brian is quite simply much bigger than his actual height! Although I am nowhere near as familiar with the first 'Blackadder' series as I am with the other three, and the 'specials', Brian stars in the first, and to look at him without the obstacle of having him stand alongside someone else, he does give the impression, voice-wise and stature-wise, of a much taller person. I had to come along to Celebheights before I found out the truth!
Brian gets 5ft8 for today's height and 5ft9.5 for his peak. He could have fooled me! What am I saying? He did!
Nik said on 6/Jun/18
Brian Blessed appears over 5'8" in the above picture but he is probably 5'8" flat now!

Rob, Brian is 81 years old! I think it's time you gave him the peak of the height and the current height! Please give him a peak of 5'9.5" or 5'9.75" and a current height of around 5'8".
Editor Rob: I think 5ft 9.5 peak for Brian may well be reasonable...today he probably won't measure above 5ft 8. He once had 6ft down as his height, which was rather optimistic.

70 years old at the time and looks like he could have been strong 174 guy maybe close t0 175 cm at the time. i really think he was 177 cm peak.
Editor Rob: 5ft 9.5 peak may well be possible for Brian

Rob, considering he would have been 70 in the above photo and still looks around 5'9" next to you, do you think 5'9.5" peak is possible?
Editor Rob: I really didn't think he was much taller than me that day on seeing him up close, though in his 40's you could argue he might have been in solid 5ft 9 range.

Do you think he could have been 5'10 range in his prime if he looked 5'9 at the age of 70?
[Editor Rob: today he can look nearer 5ft 8 than 9 I believe.]
cd said on 12/Jun/13
He looks 174cm in that image. 7 years on he could have easily dropped another cm considering his age (he will be rapidly losing height now), so maybe closer to 5'8'' flat now. Could have been 176-177cm at peak though.

Just saw him on TV next to Tony Robinson, who, apparently,is 5ft4,and he only looked a couple of inches taller at best
[Editor Rob: he has shrunk, last year I saw him up close and he looked shorter than 6 years ago.]

He always gave me the impression of a tall man when I was younger. Like 6'5''-6'6'' tall. I guess I must blame his larger-than-life personality for that. Great actor

Trent said on 21/Jan/13
I think he must just have a huge bone structure. I remember him saying his chest is 50-something inches around. When you see him on those panel shows his shoulders are twice as broad as everyone else's.

177cm peak looks accurate, 173cm today maybe. He's 76 years old now and would have lost 1.5- 2 inches on average by now.
[Editor Rob: today, well last year I saw him again and he walks about like a 5ft 7 man]
Arch Stanton said on 15/Nov/12
No kidding when I first saw this guy I thought he was at least 6'2". His face and beard is of somebody far bigger, But seeing him in some of the 60s TV series yeah he's average height. Yes 280-300 pounds looks about right.

[Editor Rob: he's barely 5ft 8 this year when I saw him]

I encountered Brian at Waterloo train station a few years back. I would say a weak 5'9", the most imposing thing about him (and this has a big effect on judging his height)is that he appears almost as wide as he is tall!
Joe said on 23/Oct/11
I would say he's about 176cm. I think his posture is not so good and is more like 176cm when bolt upright.

"Only 5'9" WTF?!! That's average height lol why is that an "only" I mean Rob isn't short either, maybe not tall but not short, short is like 170 and under. If you live in the Netherlands sure but here in the US, Canada, Australia and the UK 5'9-5'10 is the average. Jack Bauer is 5'9....do I have to say more?

Yeah by head size you'd have expected this guy to be 6'8". I honestly thought he was about 6 foot flat actually. The enormous head/beard length is deceptive.

Pat said on 25/Feb/07
Actually Blessed was too big when he played his most famous role - Augustus in I Claudius. I presume everyone here realizes that Octavian the great nephew of Julius Caesar wore lifts. Julius Caesar was tall but Octaivian (later Augustus) was short - possibly 5'4" or even 5'2". He was Caesar's adopted son but in the power struggle after the assasination he had to campaign for public acceptance. He looked vaguely like Julius but was much shorter.
When you consider that Augustus was arguably the most significant political leader in world history this was maybe the first real Celebrity Height phenomenon.
