Rob, how tall do you think Victor Spinetti was at peak? 5’11.5”?

I thought Spinetti had an inch on Wilder in Start the Revolution Without Me. Spinetti was very close in height to Robert Wagner in The Biggest Bundle of Them All.
Editor Rob
With the Beatles could look 5ft 11.5 easily enough. In his book he mentioned a review that called him 'six-foot shock-headed fellow'.

Hey Rob, what has been the lowest you could've pondered at? There are times i think he could be just 5ft 10, maybe a shade over.
Editor Rob
5ft 10 would be lowest I'd go.

A very respectable 5’10.5”. Never doubted it for a second.

Just watched See no evil, hear no evil last night..... In the movie, Gene Wilders character is described as being 5 foot 10 ten. I would say therefore, that he is 5 foot 10.

Mr Wilder was an excellent actor in comedy roles. I think he was not taller than 180cm . Google gives him 178cm. Is very very probable that's ok.

Also if you remember movies next to Richard Pryor ( 178cm) they are similar in screen.

I agree with Rob , 179/ 180 cm is ok to mr Wilder. But not more than that.

Wow that is mind blowing I was sure he was 6 foot and even 6 2 with all that hair.
He was about the same as pryor both looked slightly taller at times pryor usually looks 5 8 maybe 9 with generous shoes.
He did often display bad posture so the listing would be about max by the 80s.
The funnies fact is they are both noticeably taller than a young and goofy kevin spacey.
Either way funny guy good actor from family movies to risque comedy he had a unique tallent.

I'm shocked there hasn't been more press. He was a great man, amazing actor. Sad, sad. Young Frankenstein in theaters, that's cool.

Saw a 1975 article which described him as a mind bogglingly "six feet two"! "

I pretty much agree with this listing, though he should get 188cm :)

RIP Gene Wilder

This is one that really hurts even though he's been basically retired for quite some time, he's a true touchstone of my youth, as I'm sure he is for lots of people.

RIP. One of the greatest actors ever. One of few who could make you laugh and cry at the same time. There haven't been many with such acting range and depth. It's a sad day today, but he will always live in our hearts, souls and memories.

Wilder's a guy whose taller than you'd think from the impression he gives on screen...6'2" is obviously a huge reach though.

@ Mark and Leonari:

My professional guess is since the man is 80 now, he has lost 2.5 inches of height from his prime. So he might have been 5'10 at one point, but now is 5'7.5. There we go, problem solved.

And yes, you have to realize he reached age 21 in the mid-50s. 5'10 was considered on the tall-end of average at the time. So as he aged, he lost height. And during that time, generations have been getting taller. Who knows? Maybe one day the young 6-footers will drop below 5'9 and at that time the average male height will be 6'2. Same thing.

Ok so some of the previous posters say he was 5'7''. he does look young for his age I agree and at the time of the sightings mid 80's and 90's. he would have lost an inch maybe more be it that he was mid 50's early 60's just saying. men at that age lose some height. 5'10'' peak height 5'8'' nowadays.

I met Mister Silberman (Wilder) at the Debbie Reynolds Dance Studio in Hollywood California, in the mid 1980's. I was outside, preparing to perform as Mae West. A black limo pulled up, the driver opened the passenger door, and out he stepped. Absolutely unforgettable! Golden curls, smooth complexion, immaculate. Having always been a fan, I sauntered over to him and in my best "Westian" voice I said, "Hello Mr. Wilder." He blushed and replied, "Oh, you know me." His eyes were a sparkling blue, his expression was one of slight embarrassment and amusement. I teased, flirted, and even received a kiss on the lips. I am 5'5 1/2" in my stocking feet. He was only slightly taller. I didn't have to tiptoe to be kissed.

I just watched Willie Wonka again, and thought I'd read up on it, online. Having seen his official height on one site listed as 5'10.5, I almost fell out of my chair. I should just stay out of my chair altogether, because I see he's listed as that height, here. At 5'10.5, put him in shoes and you have an easy 6 footer. I have not seen one movie where he looks anything but short, unless surrounded by short actors. Having said that, I saw him in a Connectucut airport around 1990, give or take. The man is short. 5'7 ish.
Larc 6 ft 1.75 in said on 25/Aug/11
5'10.5 is right at his peak, he looks to be around 5'11.5-5'11.75 with shoes on in front of the mugshot in that movie.
Anonymous said on 21/Feb/11
In "See no evil, hear no evil" he stands in front of a chart for a mugshot in a police station and he's 5' 10 1/2" on shoes

This guy hasn't been in a film since 1991. He made guest appearences on tv but that's about it. Anyway I thought he was 5'10" solid but the side dish of a half inch is probably correct.
Lawrence said on 8/May/06
Well, I met him when I was in New York, and I'm a full 5'11. He was just a tad shorter than me, so 5'10 and a half is about right.
Leon said on 3/May/06
5'10 1/2 sounds good. Maybe now 5'10 since he is old. He hasn't been in a movie for a really long time.

Wilder is a solid 5'10". I've seen him in the flesh. I thought he was shorter before I saw him. Check out Silver Streak. He's taller than Ned Beatty. I think by at leaast three inches.
gyllenhaalic823 said on 12/Dec/05
I always thought he looked shorter than this, just an opinion, i thought he was more around 5'8".
