In 2001 (Newsday) he mentioned his stature, saying "I'm only 5-feet-6, not exactly leading man material"

What ever he was when younger , he was about 5'3 to 5'4 next to all the hobbit actors.

Another good underrated short actor, he did not look 5 3 in Alien just watched bluray looks 5 5-5 6.
He looks much shorter now hard to say 5 4 maybe a bit less.

Ah, well, everything can be a handicap. Try being a woman of 1.86 m (about 6.1-2). Kind of hard to find a man who can handle that...
Ian Holm is a great actor and quite attractive too imo, even at his age.

I think for people without amazing talent it's absolutely true. I have noticed I have to prove myself much more than taller folks. A small obstacle but an obstacle nonetheless. I'm 169cm (5-6.5)

it is amazing that you say that as if being short is a handicap to be overcome. its not. make a list of great actors you'll realise many of them are below average height.

I am only 5'5 1/2" so I know the feeling of being short. It looks like Sir Ian is quite short compared to Mr. Mckellan. To be such a star and being so short is something. and to think we all shrink as we age. WHEW. any way keept up the great attitude and work ethic. From a fellow SHORTY
