One of the best jaws around imo. Hard fella. 6-4 legit peak

Bugner is an easy 193cm in his prime. I have no idea how the average guess is under. He may even have been over it by a cm or so.

It seems the British press hasn't changed a lot. Once they target someone they don't let up.

Bugner had all the physical tools with an excellent skill set to go. Just my opinion, but I think the main drawback for Joe was that he was a relative pacifist for the boxing game. He didn't lack heart or courage but lacked the so called killer instinct, the desire to go out and truly hurt his man. Also, I believe Joe's first love was lifting weights which made him a bit muscle bound for boxing. For all that, he went far in the game and no mean effort going the distance with both Frazier (who Bugner wobbled badly) and Ali (twice). IMO, Joe was a very strong 6'4" at the least.

As a young man got treated disgracefully by British press which in those days was very influential. All because of a controversial decision win over their hero Henry Cooper. Bugner didn't decide the verdict it was the referee who was an astute judge. Was later unfairly blamed for not trying hard enough in fights against top class opposition. Bugner usually gave his all it's just his style was a boxer not a slugger.

Looked about 6'4'' I'd say but was a little shorter than 6'5'' American Chuck Wepner AKA the Real Rocky. Was bigger physically than the top ranked US heavyweights at the time like Ali, Frazier and Foreman. Probably unlucky not to win a title even if he wasn't quite as good as the great American fighters of that era.

Looked 193cm when he was younger with 189cm Frank Buno Click Here Click Here
Editor Rob
In person Bugner is definitely at least an inch or more taller than Frank, even when in his 50's.
Canson 194 said on 20/Jan/19
In the pic he looks 6’2” range. Agree with Christian. Not sure if he looked different outside of it tho. Maybe 6’2.75 tho
Christian 6'5" 3/8" said on 18/Jan/19
I'm seeing more 189-190 range than 190-191.
Sandy Cowell said on 29/Dec/18
Hey Rob! Look at the size of his HANDS!

6ft3 now, and an inch more for before!

Legit 6-4+ guy in prime

He looks scrawny so I don't think he is still 265 pounds more like 200-220.And 6'2 1/2

I have found the photo. What do you think? If Bugner was 191, Bud Spencer could be around 188? Click Here
But Joe was young when he had that photo with Bud
Joe Bugner peak height was 193,Bud looked 189 there.

They used to show old boxing fights on TV, with Ali vs Bugner the commenatator mentioned Bugner was according to the stats 'one inch taller but looked much taller'. Genuine 6'4'' I think and also an example of what a prime athlete looks like without steroids. Unfairly maligned by British press because he beat their hero Henry Cooper in a controversial decision. Probably the best British heavyweight apart from Lennox Lewis and maybe Anthony Joshua.

Editor Rob: he could be at least 4cm smaller than big Joe there.
Fred84 said on 26/Aug/17
What kind of shoes did he have that day? I ask, because if I compare you, Rob to him and then to other people, I would say he is taller than 191 - maybe 194-195 (I think so because - if you both stay upright, your head will not reach his nose - and that means there is bigger difference than 18 cm (191 Joe - 173 you)
Editor Rob: A running sneaker which wasn't much more than mine

Joking, joking rob! In all seriousness, I think 6'4" is perfect for peak and a tad over 6'3" now.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 10/Aug/16
I'm pretty certain he was also referred to as 6ft5 during his career
Martin Walton said on 7/Aug/16
Joe lives just down the road from me now and I talk to him quite regularly. I am 6.0 ft exactly and Joe is at least 4 ins taller than me. Formidable looking guy still at 66, but ths nicest friendliest guy you could ever meet too.
Ylyl said on 1/Jun/16
In his peak he was min 6'4
Peter 180cm said on 17/Apr/16
More chance he's 189-190 than 191,atleast what the pic suggests, imo.
Arturo Santiago said on 24/Mar/16
He looked a few inches taller, than Muhammad Ali. Just observe the second fight between both. In my personal opinion I will say, that he is at least 6'4 .
Gary said on 12/Mar/16
He could be taller than what Ron has him right now, I would say 6ft3.5 is legit.
Guyster said on 3/Jan/16
In the pic above Joe could still give off the appearance of somebody who looks 6"3.5, hasn't lost much height at all.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 14/Nov/14
"Peak height was 6ft 3¾in (192cm)"

He was described as both 6ft3½ and 6ft4 throughout his career.

"Neeson and Goldblum are starting to look shorter"
Really? not seeing that with Neeson and Goldblum;

Joe was huge, no doubt 5'4" in his prime, appears to be slowly morphing into Arthur Mullard

Here's the "Tale of the Tape" for Bugner vs Frank Bruno. It shows Bruno being about an inch shorter than Bugner, which seems accurate. Interesting to note that Bugner has much smaller hands.

Look more than 1'' if anything.

I am not seeing anything under 191cm in this picture. If he was standing perfectly straight I'd see nothing under 192cm. Rob what do you think? Footware?
[Editor Rob: he looked 6ft 3...of course I am dropping a little aswell by leaning into punch him :) I didn't know the brand of his sneakers, they weren't less than mine, could have been a bit more but I'm not sure exactly.]
Chaz said on 9/Jul/14
Click Here at 1,27secs they give Bugner 6'3.5'' and Wepner 6'5'',but Bugner fights with more of a chin down pose.

My Dad's 65 and he hasn't lost a jot. Moans more than anyone I've ever known in my life, but no drop.
Chris said on 3/Jul/14
His head and hands are giant-sized. I'd have expected him to be like 6'6 or something
Arch Stanton said on 3/Jul/14
My dad was 66 a few days ago and he's really looking noticeably shorter than he did in his prime and his frame looking more frailer but he's still fitter than most for a guy of his age and can still run up stairs. I reckon he's lost near an inch now.
Arch Stanton said on 3/Jul/14
He was on I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here a few years back and everybody was saying how massive he was. He really did look near 6 ft 4 on the show. Peak I think he'd have been a solid 6'4" guy. He's reaching the age now where a guy will start to show signs of height loss, although Hasselhoff seems to have kept his, Neeson and Goldblum are starting to look shorter.
Chaz said on 2/Jul/14
he was allways listed at 6'3.5''in the 1970s in boxing, but was taller than Bruno,Ali,and not much shorter than Chuck Wepner,

He looks like Rodney Dangerfield.
Sam said on 30/Jun/14
He has the advantage of being closer to the camera in the shot with Muhammad Ali but he does seem close to 6'4" at peak, 6'3"ish in photo with the lean into Rob's sledgehammer fist.
iyolo said on 30/Jun/14
He is also born in 1950,so around 63-64,definitely lost an inch or more (my father was 6 ft,now no more than 5.10,i'm also 6ft,he is 65 years old),and he is a boxer, maybe he's had some injuries-but he's big and bulky guy for sure. Also his body and legs are evidently quite long for his age-unlike Arnold for example-look at his height loss at 65- years of age.
the shredder said on 30/Jun/14
His head is leaning , 6'3
