I first met John Russell, in 1990 in Los Angeles, when I was working there as an actor/ screenwriter, in a parking lot across from CBS MTM Studios, in Studio City, as we both stepped out of our cars next to each other. He was 6'1" tall and seemed very pleased to chat about his classic Western series "Lawman". Russell was a very gracious, genuine man, with enormous presence. A very underrated actor.

He looked like a taller leaner Clark Gable...could easily have played brothers

Bruno, your photo of the Warner Brothers TV cowboys raises some interesting comments. It looks at first glance that all of them are in the 6' 2" to 6' 4" range. But in the 1970 movie "A Man called Sledge" James Garner is consistently three inches shorter than 6' 4" Wayde Preston. Will Hutchins was 6' 1", Jack Kelly was no more than 6', with some sources listing him at 5' 11". Obviously Will and Kelly (and Garner) are wearing "lift" boots in the WB photo. Whereas Peter Brown at 6' and Ty Hardin at near 6' 2" seem naturally consistent with 6' 4" Preston and 6' 3" Russell.

In think he edged out Wayne in Rio Bravo, although there weren´t great shots of both men

Nah I think peak this man was pretty close to 6'4''
Looked similar height to 6'4'' Wayde Preston
Cannot get a good one with Hayden only this and Hayden is closer to the camera.

Thanks for adding. This makes the most sense...those 6'4" claims are out of the question as he looked nearer 2 inches shorter than Sterling Hayden. Also think he edged out Gregory Peck & was edged out by John Wayne. Could have been a fraction over 6'3" at peak & agreed he looked more 6'1"-6'2" in old age.

Apart from other evidence, Russell's "Lawman" co-star Peter Brown (himself 6') said he was 6' 3". A friend of mine who was 6' 1" met Russell in 1988 (then aged 68) and he was by then no taller than him. They appeared in a video I've seen which confirms this. Russell losing 2" nearing seventy, down from his original 6' 3", makes sense.
