I watched the 1964 film 'The Gorgon' the other night, and it starred Peter and also Christopher Lee. I think that because you see Peter with other, smaller guys until fairly late on in the film, it's really easy to see that he did look tall AND he had an excellent posture too. I wouldn't be surprised if at the earlier times of the day, Peter hit 6ft back then, or perhaps a tiny bit under. From the evidence of that film, I have no trouble whatsoever putting 5ft11.5 for Peter.

Peter cushing peak height was 6'0" or 6'1"? Rob what is your answer

6ft 1 seemed hard to believe for Cushing in his 30's or 40's.

What a funny gent he was as well!

Although he was nearly deaf when interviewed by Michael Aspel for his edition of 'This is your Life', when Ursula Andress walked on, he couldn't cuddle her enough! Michael Aspel said, "Your hearing may be failing but nothing else is!"

Needless to say, Peter found it very funny indeed!

This English Gentleman can have 5ft11.75, peak height.

Sadly it looked like Peter had shrunk several inches by the time he died at 81 years old. A 63-64 year old Christopher Lee (not his peak height of 6'5" anymore) TOWERED Peter by what looked like close to a foot by that point: Click Here

Mark,

I believe Peter would have giving a taller IMpression then Cumberbach. Remember Cushing held up quite well at times with guys like Christopher Lee and Dave Prowse who are taller than anyone Benedict has shared the screen from what I remember.

Good actor no one played him in the abysmal rogue one it was obvious cg.
As was the princess also quite obvious and both publicized.
He looks about 6 foot at middle age so this listing seems ok.

One of my favourite actors as a child. Always struck me as a kindly gentleman. I used to cry buckets if he ever got 'killed' in one of his horror movies. My mother had to tell me it was just a film. Such a kind face. He should have got a knighthood! 😃

Sandy Cowell said on 10/Oct/16
Well, I really didn't think Peter Cushing was just a touch under 6ft, but I think that when you act alongside Christopher Lee and Vincent Price, you are going to appear shorter. Then the other day I saw him in a film with 'normal size' people and he did actually seem quite tall! A beautifully spoken, true English gent!

He appeared rather tall in 'the Vampire Lovers' - around the 6ft mark for sure. His slender frame accentuated a tall look.

Recently watched Time Without Pity and a 3 inch difference between him and Michael Redgrave in that was feasible, at some points the difference could look a tad more but not much.

He was only 2 to 2.5 inches taller than 5'7" Barbera Shelly in The Gorgon. She probably had a couple of inches advantage in her shoes but I doubt Peter was the full 6 foot even then.

In the Torture Garden (1967), Cushing stood every bit of 6'0" next to 6'4" Jack Palance, of whom he shared many scenes with standing side by side, back to back and face to face.

In an interview with Terry Wogan, Cushing described himself as being "six feet high" when he was 19.

The important thing to note is Cushing was describing his younger self. He continued to act into his 70s, so it's natural he would lose height in his later movies. He also looked close to Wogan's height in the interview.

What others have said. Just been chuckling at some old clips of Cushing on Morecambe and Wise from about 1977. Cushing is noticeably about 2 inches taller than 5'9" Eric Morecombe. Peter Cushing's posture was starting to get a bit iffy by then, although he was still agile. I'd be surprised if he was anything less than 6' before the 1970's, about 5'11" (or close) in the 1970's, probably less later on. Very effective actor (even when appearing in sub-par movies), and there was just a real affection for this guy from folks in the UK.
Arch Stanton said on 15/Apr/13
Rob, how can he be 1.5 inches taller than Telly Savalas?
Arch Stanton said on 14/Apr/13
Christopher Lee definitely has nothing under 5 inches on him, but I'm not convinced he was a full 6 ft. That film is 1972, he'd have been 59 and looks nearer 5'10", 5'11" at most. I strongly doubt he would have lost that much height by then. I'd downgrade him to 5'11" peak. He didn't quite look 6 ft in the earlier Hammer horror films either.

Having met Peter Cushing in 1975, I would have estimated his height at aproximately 5'10" to 5'11". He made so many films with his close friend, Christopher Lee (who was about 6'5" in his prime), one doesn't think of Cushing as being particularly tall.
Martyr said on 30/Dec/12
I do not agree at all. In fact he looked a strong 6' until the 70's. Watch him in the avengers, he has a strong inch on Patrick Macnee. For sure, he looked much shorter than 6'5 Christopher Lee. He really lost height and weight after his wife's death, in the early 70's.
Lebensdorf said on 31/Jul/12
Although he held up pretty well next to Darth Vader, even in slippers (he wore slippers for the film, finding his costume's boots too uncomfortable), he did not appear over 5'10" next to Christopher Lee in 1959's Hammer version of The Hound of the Baskervilles. He may have been 6 feet tall in his youth, but certainly not by that time.
M2 said on 13/May/11
Go on YouTube and check out Cushing's appearances with the British comedy team Morecambe and Wise. In the earliest one (about 1969), he towers over Morecambe, who was about 5'8". In the last one (1980), he has lost at least an inch. Circa 1980 Cushing was probably between 5'9 and 5'10.
EdgarHernandez said on 23/Jan/11

Never struck me as a six-footer. Just watched Hound of the Baskervilles. Doesn't look anything like 6", more like 5'9". I think his skinny frame made him look taller. Of course I never met him, just seen plenty of movies with him in. Oliver Reed was 5'11" I believe so maybe Cushing ws 5'11 but surely no more than that, even at 'peak height'.
M2 said on 7/Jan/09
Obviously, Cushing shrunk with age, but in his prime he appears to have been between 5'11 and 6'0". In the 1962 film "Night Creatures" he is exactly the same height as Oliver Reed, even though their physical characteristics are much different (Cushing had a very, very long face).

His niece confirms minimum of six foot in the early seventies and he was a smidge tall than my 5.11 grandfather when we saw him back then in Kent
Bleemo said on 24/Dec/08
Keir was taller then 6' I've seen listings of 6'4" but 6'2" seems to be the prevailing theory. Christopher Lee mentions him as being though of by Hammer as being in the same vain as Lee himself and Vincent price who were both well over 6'. Also Keir's daughter who is also an actress is 6'+ herself.

I think I can clear up the seeming lack of height difference at times between he and carrie fisher, they never filmed the majority of their scens together, they used standins and carboard cutouts then cut the scenes tofether.

Finally here is a great photo of Cushing and Lee together showing 4-5 inches in height gap, but to be fair to Peter Lee wa smeasured 6'5" for the guiness book of records so that would place cushing as a solid 6'....

Andrew Keir could have been a solid six footer.

Like Rob states there, Cushing didn`t look six feet. Just watched an Amicus movie whatitsname... hmmm... Yes, Beyond The Grave (or something like that) and there he doesn`t look tall, tallish or anything related to the word "tall". Also he has always looked a very small-boned man. He has small shoulders and a very slight build. In the 70s (possibly after his wife passed away) he begin to shrank and even lost some weight. He was always very slim but in the early 60s didn`t look as hollow as he did in his later career.

Also was he really six feet peak? Rob, you`ve seen his early Hammer films? How does he match with Lee and other co-stars? Think he was 183cm peak?

How tall were Robert Urquhart and Andrew Keir?
Bleemo said on 11/Nov/07
I suspect that Cushing suffered from standing opposite a lot of genuinely tall actors and few taller then 6'5 Christopher Lee who was a colossus in his youth. Other tall actors included Andrew Keir(Dr Who movie), John Richardson (SHE), David Prowse (Star Wars and later Frankenstein movie), Robert Urquhart (first Frankenstein movie) and even old Vincent Price in one of the Dr phibes movies.

So I guess you could say it was a conspiracy to make a fairly tall guy look average, one of the rare occasion of an actor being taller then most would think.

Peter Cushing appeared to be 5'11" in Star Wars Episode 4 (the very first movie). There is a 1.5 second "head to foot" telephoto long shot of him before he gives the command to destroy the Rebel Hideout in the climax scenes and appears to be tall enough. The confusion of height starts when he previously argues with Leia played by Carrie Fisher before destroying Planet Alderaan. In the close up shots they both appear to be only a few inches difference in height, but Carrie Fisher is only 5'0"! Another one of those apple crates mysteries. George Lucas had to fit them in a camera frame. Perhaps this scene is one of the many instances they gave Peter Cushing the incorrect 5'8" height.

Cool, i looked for his height during long time because he embodied Sherlock Holmes. And when i found him @ 5'8 on IMDB i got disappointed.
Dodgey guy to measure, his slender frame give him a powerfull image ideal to play lords or intellectuals and made him look taller too, but i shouldn't go for less than 5'11 for him.
