Maybe more of a weak six feet, Rob?
Editor Rob
Arguably.

I know for fact William Shatner was 5'9" when I worked with him and stood next to him in 1988 (I'm 5'10.25"). Griffith had to be close to six feet. Check out Pray for the Wildcats, with them standing next to each other to see what I mean.

Andy looked 1” shorter than legit 6’0 Jim Nabors. On Gomer Pyle USMC, Nabors even said on several episodes that he himself was 6’0. Andy was 5’11 tops.

@Rob

Can you add Jim Nabors and Frank Sutton?
Both in Gomer Pyle USMC
Nabors was in Andy Griffith at first then later on was in Jim Nabors hour.

Nabors is listed between 6'0 and 6'1

I think 6'0.5 is lowest he can be listed maybe 6'0.75 a better shout
Next to Andy Griffith he looked almost an inch taller sometimes (Griffith I think was more a weak 6'0 like me at 5'11.6 or .7)

Sutton is listed 5'8 and appears 4.5- 5 inches shorter normally.
Could be 5'7.75
Not sure if you can check them out I think they deserve a page.

Thanks as always Rob!

Rob you should add Don Knotts, he was 171-172 I think if Andy Griffith was 182-183cm.

There is even an episode of The Andy Griffith show where they pass a new regulation that police officers have to be at least 5ft8, and Barney is just under 5ft8 so he tries a bunch of whacky things to stretch himself out a fraction so he would measure a full 5ft8, and IIRC, they finally bring him in on a mattress and he hits the mark

They have not showed that episode in a long time...
Editor Rob
Yeah there were a few clips on youtube from it, 5ft 7.5 beside Griffith looked fair enough for him.

Rob, what height would you put Don Knotts at?
Editor Rob
could look over 5ft 7 with him

Maybe closer to 5’11 by the late 80/early 90s. Here he is with a billed 5’8 Clarence Gilyard

Rob, check out The Andy Griffith Show episode Bailey’s Bad Boy season 2 episode 15 with Bill Bixby. Both were at their peak heights. Bixby was 27-28 years old. Andy Griffith was 37 years old. There are a few great height comparison scenes. Especially the jail house scene when Andy is in his civilian clothes getting ready to go fishing. He was exactly 2” taller than Bixby.
Peak Andy Griffith 5’11.25”
Peak Bill Bixby 5’9.25”
Andy was never a legit 6’0” barefoot. Only in shoes was he 6’0”. His true barefoot was 5’11” to 5’11.25” in the 1960’s. This is just one REALLY good example. There were many others that also prove he was 5’11” during the early seasons of The Andy Griffith Show.
RP said on 24/Oct/19
Andy in his prime was only 6’0” in shoes. 5’11” to 5’11 1/4”. Barefoot. Don Knotts in his prime was spot on 5’7” barefoot.
Peak:
Andy 5’11.25”
Barney 5’7”
Gomer 6’0”
Goober 5’11”

Alan Hale was not a full 6'2.

He was not A full 6 inches taller than the 5'8 Bob Denver.

6'1.25-6'1.5

MarkO said: "If Griffith is/was really 6'0, there's no way Alan Hale, Jr (Skipper) was any more than 6'1"

Just wanted to comment that Alan Hale in Hang'em High (release in 1968 but filmed in 1967) was only slightly shorter than a peak-height Clint Eastwood, Alan Hale was indeed at least 6'2", probably taller than that.

Was a big guy in 50s and 60s towered over Murray Hamilton who claimed 5 10 but looked 5 8.
Doubt he wore lifts or big boots his whole career, 5 11 .5 to 6 foot min.

I met Jim Nabors in Oahu 1979. He was not 6'0". If George Lindsey (Goober) was 6'0", why was Jim Nabors like 3 or 4 inches taller when they stood next to each other? Jim Nabors towered over everybody in the room, my stepfather was only 5'9", this was not a 3 inch difference. My dad was 6'0", and i of course had seen my dad near my stepfather. Jim Nabors looked like 6'5" and a website i read stated the same thing.

Watching Matlock today and he is sitting on a bench with Nancy Stafford and he takes off his boots. In the Andy Griffith show he woore the same half boots. Did he wear these as part if his leg problems?
Talker said on 30/Mar/17
Solid 1.83 before 1980's. By the 1980's he had health issues and was actually wearing leg braces so probably only 1.72 by then.
His postures also got really bad (probably to compensate for the leg problems)....you can see this if you watch Matlock carefully.

Denver Pyle and Jim Nabors were both 6'1. They were both an inch taller than Andy Griffith.
Scott said on 24/Nov/16
In his youth, he may have been a solid 5'11'' or a tad over. Jim Neighbors and Denver Pyle (solid 6 footers) had him by an inch at least. He may have been a legit 6' in shoes, but he had lost some height by the time he played Matlock. I agree that his final height was around 5'9'' before he passed.

Rob,

I was just watching the "Andy Griffith Show", specifically "Barney's Uniform" episode on Youtube. Have you seen that show/episode? If you get a chance, take a look
at it... go to 15:13-15:21. Andy and 5'11" Allan Melvin are face to face. It looks like Allan has a solid 1" height over Andy. If their shoes were equal, what do you
think Andy stood?
Editor Rob
couldn't see the clip, but I've not really looked at him much since 9 years ago, I think he genuinely lost a fair few inches from 60's to 90's.
John said on 5/Apr/16
He looks about 5'9" in the Matlock episode Mr. Awesome where the guy who played him is a 6'3".
MIKESOWELL said on 31/Dec/15
Six feet looks about spot on for him until the 1980s. I am a little foggy in my memory, but I think that in the early 1980s Andy Griffith had a serious illness that affected his legs and back. It is reasonable to conclude that this, as well as aging and weight gain, contributed to a considerable loss in height. In his Matlock days he looked between 5-10 to 5-11. Towards the end of his life maybe 5-9.5.

Concerning Joe's comment on May 8th 2007 the reason of the apparent height difference between bush and Griffith was due to the fact that bush had to wear high heel shoes to make up for the fact that he (bush) had no brain.

It seems to me that Don Knotts was probably no more than 5'7 1/2" tops barefoot. In all of the episodes I have ever seen of The Andy Griffith Show it never looked to me like Andy had 4 1/2" on Knotts. The height difference appeared to be no more than 3 inches tops maybe even 2 1/2". That would put Griffiths' height at around 5'10" or 5'10 1/2". I definitely don't see him as a legit 6 feet barefoot.

In 1985, I saw Jim Nabors on Mackinac Island, MI. and I couldn't believe how tall He was. He seemed to Me to be around 6'4" or More. I'm 5'11" and He towered over Me.
:D
II

LOL... Jim Nabors is and was 6'0. He even said it before on episodes of Gomer Pyle. I have seen him listed at 6'1", which might be his absolute peak. If he towered over you, then I suspect you're not 5'11"
Oanh said on 30/Jul/14
I'm not so sure he was 5'11". I was watching the Andy Griffith Show the other day, and in the episode "Barney's Uniform", he looks a full 1" shorter than 5'11" Allan Melvin. Melvin is listed consistently at 5'11". In one scene they're almost face to face, and Melvin is clearly taller. Andy was in his late 30's when that episode was filmed, so he was still prime height. Bottom line for me: Andy was 5'10.5" at best.

Knott's was no more than 5'7 . Very light/small build and slim.
Andy was never full 6'0 I'd say 5'11.25-5 tops.

Yeah I'd imagine that just from seeing him next to Barney all the time, that at his max height he was between 5'10'' and 6'0''. The thing was that Barney was 5'6.5'' and although Andy was by far taller than Don, he did wear those boots with a bit of a heel, plus, his thick waves go an inch or two above the head! : ) I'd say that Andy was no taller than 6 feet.

bobk said on 10/Feb/11
He was always wearing those big boots on the andy griffith show, those heels looked pretty suspicious to me. In matlock he was only as tall as his female lead. I don't think he shrunk that much, I think he was heightening.
FrankStallone said on 19/Jan/11
Andy was about 5'11'' during the Andy Griffith show. During the 80's and his Matlock years you could see that he had shrunken considerably. I would say he's was 5'8" or 5'9".

Andy and "Gomer" looked almost the same height in an episode of "The Andy Griffith Show", and Jim was known to be about 6'. At his peak, I'd say Andy was at least 5'11" but no more than 6'0.

Andy is very short, these days. You see him shopping around where he lives in NC. My guess, 5 foot 6 or shorter.

From what I've read, both Jim Nabors and Denver Pyle are/were 6'2".
I know it is not exactly valid, but Andy's character on "The Andy Griffith Show" said he was 6' when asked by a character in the role of a movie producer.
Scott B. said on 7/May/08
Hi muta: I value and respect your input. But Andy was shorter than Nabors. Nabors was always slouching in scenes with Andy. They wanted to give the illusion Andy was the taller of the two.Watch closely the next time you see them together.

He did wear boots on the show but he looked taller than Jim Nabors so I believe Andy may have been 6'1'' but he definitely looks very short now like 5'9"

Griffith has shrank several inches over the years. Myself at 60, I have lost a tad over an inch. My father who neglected his health lost about 3 inches by 70. Andy appeared to be a 6 footer in his late 50's movies. In Mayberry he was about 4 nches taller than Barney. I saw something with the two of them a few yars back that was current and they were close to the same height. I have read that Andy has had some serious leg problems. I peg him at about 5'9" today.
MarkO said on 20/Jul/07
If Griffith is/was really 6'0, there's no way Alan Hale, Jr (Skipper) was any more than 6'1 (he's often listed as 6'4). He was on the Andy Griffith Show today. Griffith DOES look shorter now, but I just don't buy, barring spine injuries, that men shrink 3 or 4 inches by 80.

I OFTEN WONDERED ABOUT ANDY'S HEIGHT. WHEN CLOSE TO ''GOMER''[6'2''] HE LOOKED
6FOOT, BUT WHEN HE RECEIVED A MEDAL FROM PRESIDENT BUSH [5'11''] HE LOOKED SMALL. MAYBE 5'8''. JOE

Andy with Dick Van Dyke in the mid to late 90's I think, look about the same height. Although DVD's horrible posture is legendary and is even mentioned in Diagnosis Murder a few times.

Andy Griffith was listed as 6'2" in biography magazines in the late 50's and early 60's but I believe he was 6'0'' or maybe a half inch over 6 feet but he is definitely shorter these days. It appears everybody towers over him. He looks to be around 5'10'' these days.
