How tall was Ben Gazzara

Ben Gazzara's Height

5ft 9 ⅞ (177.5 cm)

American actor best remembered for roles in movies like Anatomy of a Murder, Road House, Husbands, The Big Lebowski, Paris Je T'aime, The Bridge At Remagen, Saint Jack, The Killing of a Chinese Bookie, The Spanish Prisoner and the TV series Run for Your Life. In his book, My Life as an Actor he recalls an early tv program and an appearance alongside Chuck Connors: "As I stood next to his 6ft 5 frame, I knew I was in trouble. I'm barely Five foot Ten". Gazarra then says he helped the director plan it to keep them as far apart as possible and when sitting, he would sit on a cushion.

Rob, any chance of Gazzara getting 5'9.5"? At around 24:20 below, Gazzara looks more 5'9" than 5'10" with Audrey Hepburn, even considering her heels.

Tricky to tell without seeing her footwear, which in the scene I couldn't spot.

Rob, would you mind downgrading Gazzara to 5’9.5”?

In Bloodline, he barely seemed over 5’9”. 5’9.25” is even a possibility.

just rewatched the big lebowski, ben gives a shorter impression next to jeff bridges compared to seymour hoffman next to jeff, who barely looks 5ft9. my guess for ben is 5ft9.25 peak and around 5ft8.5 in the big lebowski.

Hey Rob, would you make an exception of putting him at 5'9 and 7/8? Since he did claim "I'm barely Five foot Ten" himself.
Editor Rob
That mark is possible yes.

Looked similar to Clooney I thought in Chinese Bookie. Still waiting for Rob to add some of the other Cassavetes ones I requested.

Hey Rob, if he says he's barely 5'10" wouldn't that make him 5'9.75?
Or do you think he's like an eighth shy of it?
Editor Rob
could have been a guy who measured just a little under it so it's fine saying barely 5ft 10 if you are very near it.

Rob, could you update his credits: "American actor best remember for roles in movies like Anatomy of a Murder, Husbands, The Bridge at Remagen, The Killing of a Chinese Bookie, Saint Jack, They All Laughed, Road House, The Big Lebowski and Paris, je t'aime and on TV in the show Run for Your Life."

Definitely the tallest of the Cassavetes gang, having maybe been about 3 inches taller Peter Falk and John Cassavetes, sometimes appeared a bit less difference.

Yeah rob. I saw an italian tv series and he looked very short (even if i gotta say he had poor posture). What about 5'8 now?
Editor Rob
yes he has probably shrunk to around that mark today.

I think he lost some height due to his age. He was always the tallest of the Cassavetes-Falk-Gazzara trio.

I met Gazzara in Arezzo in July, i am 183-184cm and next to me he looked at least 10cm lower, so i would say about 173cm or 5'8''

Gazzara was sometimes towered over by a real tall co-star (George Lanzeby in Saint Jack or Timothy Carey in The Killing of a Chinese Bookie), although oddly he looked not that much shorter than Jimmy Stewart in Anatomy of a Murder...maybe due in part to his military posture in the part. Also appeared a bit taller than Toshiro Mifune

I've also read rumours about that Chuck Connors thing, which happened when they starred together in the series Arrest and Trial. Gazzara stood on boxes and used camera angles to make him look taller next to him. However, I asked a director of the series about it, and he said he doesn't remember any such problems. So maybe it's just a rumour.

Ben is pretty tall for the family, he is cousins with my uncle who is only 5'3". We Italians are pretty short

When I met him he was almost my height, but he could have been 5'11" and perhaps never stood up straight. By the time of Roadhouse he had lost some height. He wore funny-looking boots in that film which I believe boosted his height and he was still no taller than Patrick Swayze who is about 5'9".

I've seen recently a couple of movies of Ben and he appears to be taller than 5'10". In a movie with Ornella Muti"La ragazza di Trieste" they are both barefoot and Ben had almost a head over her. Ornella Muti is about 165-166cm.Maybe he was really close to 6'0" in his prime like my father say. My father met him about 30 years ago.

Here's a terrific shot of Gazzara with lovely Quinn O'Hara: Click Here

It was taken back when he starred in Run For Your Life. Back then he was about 5'10.5". I've seen photos of him next to Bob Wagner taken at Universal and they're almost the same height. And I just remembered that Gazzara directed some TV series when I worked at Universal and I met him and he was almost my height and he didn't appear to be wearing lifts. He and Peter Falk were great pals. They'd be in a cutting room down the hall both smoking these huge Havana cigars and stinking up the building big time. Peter had in his contract the right to supervise all editing of Colombo since his glass eye would tend to wander and he used that excuse to be in the editing room suggesting changes.

I am not sure about this height. Ben Gazzara was in the movie Roadhouse with Patrick Swayze and Patrick was clearly taller than he was. Looked like at least an inch. Perhaps two. If Patrick is 5'10" (according to celebheights), Ben would be in the 5'8" to 5'9" range in my opinion.
My guess is he was between 5'9" and 5'10" in his prime but likely now is in the 5'8" range.

possibly I am letting him off with the 'barely 5ft 10' remark
