I didn’t feel sorry for Charles and how he met his end in The Devil Rides Out but I did in the film The Legacy. That was horrid! 🔥
The actor always came over as taller to me because he had a menacing presence.

Actually, The Devil Rides Out was made in 1967 and released in 1968.
While watching it tonight, I thought, “Why were things so prim and proper back in the 1930s?”
These days, if a dodgy and dangerous person knocked at our doors, we’d refuse entry. Christopher Lee’s niece was far too polite to tell Charles Gray’s Mocata to *** off! No, she let him in and he hypnotised her, and sped off with her little girl.
Charles had an overbearingly menacing presence in that film and it wasn’t surprising that he became a Bond villain.
Strong 6ft1, and scary with it!

In 1968, when ‘The Devil Rides Out’ was made, 6ft1 might have been construed as a bit more than it is now, but hardly massively so. Christopher Lee and Leon Greene, his co-stars, were both taller than him.

I’m looking forward to watching Charles in tonight’s showing of ‘The Devil Rides Out’.
It’ll be an excellent opportunity to take a long, scrutinising look at the late actor’s stature.

Charles looked taller in 'The Legacy' from the late 1970s. I swore to myself that I'd check out his height, because I remembered thinking before, "6ft1? Is that all he is?"

He really wasn’t much shorter than Sean Connery in Diamonds Are Forever.
And in You Only Live Twice, he seemed at least as tall as Connery, when Connery was barefoot and Gray was in shoes.

He looked taller than Connery in You Only Live Twice because he was wearing bedroom slippers and Connery had just taken his shoes off. In Diamonds Are Forever they looked about the same height. He was a pretty strong 6'1 to Connery's 6'1.5.

Please could you add 'The Devil Rides Out' to his credits Rob?
I suspect his eerieness in this film could well have contributed to his being chosen for playing future menacing roles.
He can have 6ft1.

In Bergerac he had around 3 inches on John Nettles who was about 5ft10. Aged 57 in that he looked like a guy who'd lost height to me, so a solid 186 in his prime seems reasonable to me. It's funny to think he looked fairly old in Diamonds are forever and yet the next Bond in waiting(Moore) was actually older than him.

Charles Gray was exactly 6'1" as a young man, although by the 1980s he wasn't at his peak height as the episode of "Bergerac" showed where he reprised his Hammer role.

Sure, you can tell that Charles is a tall and burly specimen, but NOT because you see the two leading actors (Christopher Lee and Gray) standing together! That bit determines his height is on the tall side, but you don't need to compare the two to see that Gray was well made! That was stark staring obvious!

Hooray! Charles Grey, creepy crook extraordinnaire, has a page on Celebheights at last! I'd looked him up before and was quite surprised that he wasn't there!
I remember him best for his devillish character in 'The Devil Rides Out'. His piercing, hypnotic blue eyes sent shivers down my spine as he practiced his evil in whatever form he felt was necessary, to corrupt the two naive young people to succomb to his powers of Satanism.
That film, which I saw when I was very young, scared me more than most, and was still having an effect on me years later. I loved Christopher Lee in it though for saving everybody in the end, including an innocent child. It was my favourite Christopher Lee part, but it left me with a lifelong dread of Charles Gray!
Even though Christopher was significantly taller, of course, with his 6ft4.5-5, one could still tell that Charles was a tall and burly specimen in that film because firstly, you don't see the two actors standing together apart from when they turn up at the beginning looking for a young and vulnerable man, played by Patrick Mower, at an icy cold get-together containing the 13 Devil worshippers needed to complete the coven. Secondly, there are other people at the gathering, and they look a whole lot shorter than he does! Scary stuff it certainly is, but if you can take your mind off the plot for a minute and compare the two leading actors, you will notice that 6ft1 is definitely a good call for Charles Gray. I'm lucky in that I own a copy of this film (part of my Christopher Lee accumulation!), so I have had the opportunity to pause the film in the appropriate parts!
I have also seen Gray in a film called 'The Legacy', another chiller, and starring 5ft3 Katherine Ross and 5ft5 Roger Daltrey. Gray, of course, towers over them! Then I saw Mr Gray sitting on a Parliamentary bench in one of my historic favourites, possibly about Sir Thomas Moore, and finally who can forget his excellent rendition of 'Blofelt', the fluffy white cat-owning crook, playing opposite Sean Connery's James Bond?
That's quite a meaty career to have had, and if I should come across any more of his films, I'm sure they will thill me every bit as much as the ones I've seen so far. Although
I have only seen him exert his nasty side, I'd like to believe that Charles Gray is really a good old fashioned English gentleman!

Harris could vary next to Connery. Sometimes 2in shorter other times almost the same. This guy had better posture. I wouldn't have disputed 6ft2 either.

Editor Rob During that era there are many actors who gave specific fractions in Spotlight, but I never seen Charles giving it, although I suppose some actors who are a fraction over 6ft 1 won't bother with the fraction.

Editor Rob he wasn't much smaller really, I'd have said he held up better than someone like Richard Harris did against Sean in Molly Maguires.
