How tall was Christopher Reeve

Christopher Reeve's Height

6ft 3 ½ (191.8 cm)

American actor best remembered for his role in the Superman films.
I was very tall and very awkward. I was six feet two inches by the time I was 13 and I wasn't well-coordinated. I had Osgood Schlatter disease, which makes the tendons grow faster than the bones.
I'm 6-foot-4 and I weighed 185 pounds. I reported to London for the picture 8 weeks early and found they had constructed a Superman costume complete with muscles. I absolutely refused to play the role that way. Instead I got an instructor, Dave Prowse who played Darth Vader in 'Star Wars,' and set out a physical regimen for myself. I spent 2 hours a day, 7 days a week working out with heavy weights in a gym.
I looked like Jimmy Stewart standing sideways. So I ate four meals a day and pumped up my muscles. By the time the picture started I weighed 221 pounds - all muscle. I did every single stunt in the picture.

There's a chance of his being close to 6'3.25" but I not so sure on a 6'3" flat height for him. Like you said he quite often looked 1.5 inches taller than Hackman and with a young(er) Morgan Freeman still looked a solid inch taller.

I'm a big Christopher Reeve fan. "Superman: The Movie" is my favorite movie of all time (saw it in a theater when it first came out). Also love time travel and the movie "Somewhere in Time."

That said, here's a great pic of Reeve looking 6'3.5" w/ 6'2" Gene Hackman... Click Here

Reeve's stand-in, Donald Standen is said to have been 6'4" peak height. Reeve only looks 6'3" here w/ him.... Click Here

Big John Studd (closer to the camera) doesn't look so big next to Reeve here... both men in dress shoes... Click Here Studd looks to be about 6'5".

Finally, here's Hackman and 6'5.5" Clive Mantle... Click Here

Agree, Rock would be looking up to him, regardless.
Dream(5'9.5 said on 5/Feb/18
Technically, Reeves would have a higher head. The hair may fool us into thinking we aren't as tall as we are. However, it depends on the hair.

Reeve's hair volume is normal. Not so thick and not so flat. The very top of our heads is usually covered our hair.

What I'm saying is that Reeves would have a higher head and would definitely look down on the Rock.
Jordan87 said on 31/Jan/18
@ Dream, Rob

Wouldn't Christopher Reeve would look down on the Rock a bit? Even if their heads were at the same height, Rock has a much bigger forehead/lower eye level. Christoper Would look down on the Rock.

But here he was again listed as 6'4

He was definitely taller than Hackman (6'2) in his Superman movies, but I don't know if he was full 6'4 (cause EVERYONE lies about their height ;D). I guess solid 6'3 (191 cm) is more probable.

Richard Donner wanted Clint Eastwood to play Super Man because he was 6’4 and had the cinematic appeal but Clint pulled out because he felt too old for the part he would have been 46 at the time , Reeve was perfect an unknown but he had everything to play the roll looks ,height, the camera loved him in that suit .

Rob, would you say that Reeves falls into a similar range like β€˜Lee Pace,’ or would Lee Pace edge this Guy out?
Editor Rob: you can probably make a 6ft 4 case for Pace a bit more I feel than Reeve.
James B said on 15/Nov/17
It's interesting Rob i have seen a lot of films with steven seagal and too be honest christopher reeve looked at least his height in superman 3. He even gave a taller vibe than Jeff goldblum did in independance day.

Perhaps they wanted too hire a particularly short cast in the film too sell Christopher's superhero image?

There has also been a lot of discussion on celeb heights that Steven seagal would work alongside a 6ft plus cast in a lot of his movies.
Editor Rob: I don't know about a small cast, but any man over 6ft 3 in film usually does look quite tall in crowd situations, but of course if you hire shorter or taller people you can create a different scenario, the 6ft 3 man could look huge or barely much above average as a result of casting.
Real Cavill said on 14/Nov/17
Cavills arms are published in Man of Steel as 16 inches and they looked about 16 inches which is not that big. Arms have to be a lot bigger than that to look short. Many big guys with huge arms like Arnold Schwarzenneger didn't have arms that looked short. Chris Reeves has long arms because he's tall.
James B said on 13/Nov/17
Rob are you sure hes not a full 6'4? he really did tower over the cast of superman 3.

Hard to imagine him being shorter than guys like Steven seagal or jeff goldblum when seeing him in that film.
Editor Rob: the more I've seen over the years, I feel he was just shy of 6ft 4 but I suppose near enough it to look that tall to many people.
Jordan87 said on 31/Oct/17
Rob,

Yes, I think Prowse would have still Edged Reeve out if they stood together since this would be 1977 And I do not think Prowse would have lost any height at that point.

A Side Note, Reeve Being 6'3 or 6'4, all of Know is his arms were extremely Long even for his height. Longer the Arms, the harder it is to put the muscle on. Cavill has those T-Rex arms, not taking away from his workout regime but Reeve now outweight cavill by nearly 20 pounds is Impressive.
Editor Rob: Cavill was decent enough in the role, but Reeve was a great actor playing Superman, he hit it out the park.

I'm not sure Cavill's arms are too short, it's just he put a lot of bulk and that probably made them seem a bit shorter. If he was skinny, he probably wouldn't look as disproportionate.
Edimar1.84 said on 30/Oct/17
Rob,a 6ft guy can be towered by a 6ft3.5?
Editor Rob: well I think once you get to eyes being top of head it becomes a more significant difference to people, I wouldn't think 3.5 inches was towering.
Jordan87 said on 30/Oct/17
Rob,

I see you updated the Quote on Mr. Reeve. Reeve states he was 221 pounds for the Role, that means he had Cavill by around 20 pounds Interesting.......

Ricahrdspain,

Yeah 5'11 is out of the question for Reeve, def a error there. In the american Version he said " About 6'4" which I think could mean he was slightly shorter than 6'4. I never though he really looked over it. He actually looked shorter next to Robin Williams than Brandon Routh did. Routh is not over 6'2-1/4".

Jaime Warburton,

I have the same question you do, why? B/c Reeve did look considerably bigger in SUperman 3. I Know for a fact he got up to 212 pounds from 188 in the first Superman, But By Superman 3 it wouldn't shock me if he was around a good 10 pounds heavier than when he did the first Superman film. So around 220, maybe 225 Id say would be his weight for Supes 3. He looked the thinnest in Superman 4 as a 35 Year old man.
jamie Warburton said on 27/Jul/17
Rob what would you say his weight was for superman 3 he seemed quite heavier and brawny in that movie than the other superman films?
Jordan87 said on 27/Jul/17
In Superman 1978 Reeve responded with " About 6'4 " when asked about his height. If he is 6'3-1/2 or 6'3-3/4" I would not expect him to say exactly his height I guess.. He used the word "About 6'4", so even if he was say 6'3.5", he was still accurate with his statement there.

Barely 2" Taller than Roger Moore who he himself claimed 6'1.

Can't see footwear but To be honest there are some shots of Sean Connery and Roger Moore , and Connery doesn't look much shorter than Christopher Reeve When Compared to Sir Roger.

I doubt 6'4" Very Much based on the above Pic I found and some pics others have posted.

Fantastic as Superman, Perfect casting Choice however. So what he wasn't 6'4? height is less relevant than some other factors. If he wasn't 6'4, he certainly was tall enough for the Role that's for Damn Sure.

Reeve had extremely long arms even for his height. Honestly , Jon jones is around 6'3 or 6'4 whatever and has an 84" reach. I really think Christopher Reeve had longer arms.

Cavill is the opposite, very Short arms for his height and which makes it much easier to gain muscle mass. Reev was 225 pounds in Superman 3 FYI.

Cavill 6'0.5 203 lbs ( As Superman)
Reeve 6'3.5 225 lbs ( as Superman)

Reeve Closer to the actual Size of the Superman Character.

Rob do you think Christopher reeve was not built largely enough to get up to supermans weight which is 235 pounds?
Editor Rob: if he went from 185 pounds to 215, that's a big gain, but his frame/genetics might mean he really would struggle to get near a muscular 235 pound range.

The question is... If Tom came out with 6'4, you would have given him 6'2.75? We know you're very "sensitive" to celebrities' claims, at times...
I know you did think that Robin lost some height before his death, but shouldn't a let's say one inch loss balance the inch difference (or at least supposed) between Brandon and Christopher? To me, Brandon does look clearly taller than Chris next to Robin!

If you have seen the Richard Donner's directors cut of Superman II--you can see the character of Lois Lane telling Clark to stop slouching and straighten up. The posture of Chris Reeve would change by 3 inches. It is the guys under six feet always trying to be taller and the guys well over six feet always trying to blend in...

How tall do you think big G looks with him? He looks near 5'10 to me, without considering the fact he's much closer to the camera (and he's maybe on his tiptoes)...
[Editor Rob: it's a tough photo to say, because some of the height will be lost. How much is even harder to tell, 1 or 3 inches, could be anywhere between that amount.

Here is quick photo I took of me basically just around 6ft 4 range with Jenny, then on same box with closer shot and closer Jenny: Here]

I guess G is not that wrong when he says he can give 5'10 tall impression to people: Click Here
You never know what's going on G's pictures, of course he's gaining some height from standing much closer to the camera but still only a mad man would say that's a 6'3.5 guy next to a 5'6.5!

Also, look at a "late" Robin with Brandon Routh... Brandon seems taller than a Christopher Reeve, just to say! Of course, Robin was probably an inch shorter than his peak there but then again that would "match" with the one inch difference between Brandon and Christopher (6'2.5 vs 6'3.5), if you know what i mean!

To me, he looks like he's standing quite good with Arnie... Also, could you explain why he looked so "short" with Robin?
[Editor Rob: maybe with Reeve, at times he just didn't stand that tall. I think Williams somewhere in 5ft 7 range is believable, you could say Reeve in photos didn't look over 6ft 3 with him.]
Andrea said on 27/Jun/15
6'3.5? Come on, look at him with Arnold, Manute, Robin... That's not even close to 6'3.5!!! I'm saying 6'3 to give him the benefit of doubt... Why are you so conservative with certain people?
[Editor Rob: from all I've seen I think somewhere between 6ft 3 and 4 is a good enough shout. With arnie I don't believe he is quite as tall a stance as arnie.]
Andrea said on 26/Jun/15
Rob, have you seen him with Arnold and that Manute Bol guy? He doesn't look over 6'3 aswell... Do you think he could have claimed his height in shoes? With Robin he struggles to look even 6'2, at times! 6'3 is probably a fairer figure...
[Editor Rob: he might have been 6ft 3.5, I don't think he looked much taller in a film with morgan freeman either come to think of it.]

I always enjoyed the Reeve Superman films, I heard after Superman III that he was going to quit and another actor was going to replace him as Superman, I thought no one could be Superman other than Reeve. Reeve is and was Superman, and I was right, no actor since could emulate the brilliance that Reeve brought to the role, the current Superman actor, Henry Cavill is only a shadow of Reeve, his predecessor Brandon Routh came close to resembling Reeve in appearance but lacked Reev's charisma and charm. Reeve will always be Superman.

Reeve was and still is the best Superman actor ever. A few people say Cavill might have surpassed Reeve, which I find to be silly. Technology has changed film considerably since Reeve's time. Comparing film in the late 1970s to late 1980s to 2013 is not a fair comparison. Reeve still manages to be far more charismatic and likable as Superman. His movies are more entertaining despite having far less special effects.
Joe said on 21/Feb/15
Reeve was very honest and open about his height, he was a full 6'4", he was massive, yet outside of Superman he never got any big roles in Hollywood, but he will always be known as Superman. Cavill is much smaller, more muscular and pretty boyish, but Reeve was a more masculine Superman compared to Cavill's whiney boy Man of Steel. He packed on 40 pounds of muscle for the role in a time when he did not have the privilege of high priced personal trainers and supplements. Cavill was given carte blanche personal trainers and dieticians.

[Editor Rob: yeah at times he can look nearer 6ft 3 than 4, although is he standing at his tallest with Williams?]

I thought Superman was 6'5 in the comics. Reeve was 6'4, but his boots in Superman must have been flats, because Gene Hackman was not much shorter, and Margot Kidder in heels looked like a tall woman next to him. He was a great looking guy all around.

I think Christopher Reeve was one of the few men in Hollywood that was actually honest about his height, he was indeed a full 6-4, and he was physically larger than the comic book Superman who was 6-3. I do not think there was ever a better choice of casting for a Superhero than Reeve, he truly embodied Superman. On an interesting note Robin Williams was his roommate while they were at Julliard. Now they are both in heaven, kind of sad that Williams passed away nearly 10 years after Reeve.

But here you have Christopher Reeve, who was obviously a very tall man as there wasn't a movie he was in that he wasn't taller than everyone else, who said many times and has had said many times of him that he was exactly 6'4", who had giant-sized kids with an average sized woman, and people are arguing whether he was 6'4" or 6'3.5", as if it is humanly possible to tell 0.5 inches from pictures in which there are many variables (footwear, incline, angle, positioning, slouching - of which he was notorious for, not surprising since many people who tower over everyone else have the same tendency...), or as if it even matters at all whether he was really tall or really tall + half an inch. Because the continuity was based in the same universe as the Reeve movies they wanted to keep Routh on (pardon the pun) equal footing, thats why they felt the need to boost his Height from 6ft 2.5" to Reeve's heigh of 6ft 4". Still they could have made the soles a little less obvious. Reeve's boots were actually thin soled wrestling boots, that laced up at the back.

Anonymous: Arnold's all time highest competition weight was at the 1971 Mr. Olympia when he weighed 251.4 pounds at the pre-judging.

Arnold was 235 pounds at the 1974 Olympia Pre-judging weigh in. After the pre-judging was over, he ate lots of carrot cake to put weight on quickly for the pose-off against 265 pounds Lou Ferigno. At the evening show, he showed up on stage at a 240 - 241 pounds.

Arnold was 225 pounds in 1975 Olympia because he lost 40 pounds (coming down from 250 pounds off-season weight to 210 pounds for the "Stay Hungry" movie, as requested by the producer). He could not regain all pure muscle mass in time and by time he finished dieting for contest, he was only 225 pounds.

Anonymous said on 29/Nov/08
When did I say Arnold was less than 225 in any other Olympia? Yes he was 225 in 1975, which is what I said. I never said he was less than that or only that in earlier ones. He was 235 in 1974 and claimed that to be his all time best.

Back to Reeve, I put him at about 6'4", and around 210 when Superman I & II were filmed. I would say he was bigger, and really around 225 for Superman III, not a good movie, but Reeve's all time biggest/best shape IMHO.

The reason Reeve was not as "BIG" looking as Arnold at the same weight is 2 reasons:

1. Arnold had an even lower bodyfat%, meaning more of his weight was muscle.

2. The height difference. ON the Ponderal scaling index (far more accurate than BMI for comparing body shapes of different heights) 225 at 6'1" would translate to 253 at a height of 6'4". So for his height, Reeve was comparatively 28 mounds lighter.

If you want to get really technical, the comic book superman is 6'3" and 225 so if Reeve was to be as thick as him, at just one inch taller, he would need to be 235 with very low bodyfat. That would still look almost 20 pounds ligher than Arnold did in 1975, if you want a reference.

Ponderal scaling index, used to find equal body shape for a different height

All things being equal --which they are not....most people will be aware of their maximum height, as compared to the unknowing victim whose is being sized up. IF, Christopher Reeve was asked to stand at his straighest and tallest--because someone was checking out his height--I believe the numbers would be different. 6'3" becomes 6'4" or close to it and the reverse can be applied to 6'2" and 3/4 becomes 6'2" even, when relaxed. Most people who know anything about Reeve know he had bad posture and his torso would sag into his hips. And by the the mid-eighties he developed problems with a lower disc in his back. That is why he did not lift heavy weights at all prior to Superman IV.Unless one can say--yeah I use to see him in '84 or '85, but that was over 20 years ago.

supermanfan380: Arnold Schwarzenegger was not 6'0", but 6'1.75" in the 1970s. Today he shrunk due to three surgeries down to 5'11" - 6'0". He weighed 225 lbs for the 1975 Mr. Olympia because he lost too much weight for "Stay Hungry". In 1974, he weighed 240 pounds for the Mr. Olympia and in 1971 he weighed a ripped 250 pounds for the Olympia.

I met Chris several times at equestrian shows, and he was all of 6'3" but not more, as I am 6'2.75", and he was barely taller than me if at all.

That is a load of.... Christopher Reeve is/was not 6'2" maybe if he slouched. I saw him plenty of times in the Upper West Side. He had bad posture at times, but you could see his height when he stood straight and tall. A good friend of mine worked in "Daytime" and they worked out at the same gym. My friend is 6'3" and he always said Chris had about an inch on him, but had poor posture.
RobertJ said on 19/Jun/08
Joe S - your very mistaken or just lying. While Reeve may have been 6'3'' and some change flat, it's impossible he wore lifts in any of the superman films.
Supermanfan380 said on 31/May/08
When did you meet him Joe?

I can't believe anything less than 6'3" for him, and I have hiim at 6'4".

He may have looked shorter than that, to you, as he did tend to slouch. My wife is 3" taller than I am, and if she slouches just a little the difference looks much less. If her footwear is thinner than mine, it looks like she is only 1"-2" taller. So if Reeve had slightly thinner shoes, and was slouching, then sure he may only feel 1"-2" taller than you, but if his stood up with good posture it may look differenct.

I have met Reeve several times in NYC. I am 6'1 and he was not much taller than me. I'd say Reeve was a solid 6'2 but appeared taller because he was so lean. The eyes play tricks people. And don't forget in the Superman movies, he had lifts in his shoes as Clark and Superman. You couldnt see them but they were inside the boot, at the heel. The lifts made him about 6'4 I would say.
Supermanfan380 said on 23/May/08
So if you are say, 212 pounds, at 21% bodyfat, that is not a good comparison to say,
Supermanfan380 said on 23/May/08
Guys, I said "about 150 pounds", just to drive the point home that he bulked up for the film. Sure, he may have been 180 for a starting point.

I do think he may have been 212 pounds only, even at 6'4", and looked exactly as he did.

212 pounds with very low bodyfat%. The low BF is what makes the difference. You cannot compare a guy who is 212 with 8% bodyfat, to a guy who is 212 and 20% bodyfat.

The difference there about be 24 pounds, either being muscle or fat.

Muscle is put on the outer silhouette of your body, shoulders, chest, upper back, etc

Editor Rob, we need to get a photo of Paul Satterfield. The 'twin' of Christopher Reeve, he (Satterfield) is also listed at 6'4". It would be great if Glenn could get a photo.
jenny said on 5/May/08
he is no less than 6-4, 6-5 i guess! but editor rob seems right!

i have 5 pics with reeve.the other pics will be seen one day.looked 6-2 in some of them i think.but he was a legit 6-4.
RobertJ said on 26/Mar/08
Get serious Kevint, that photo with glenn is horrible to judge his height since it wasn't taken for height comparison. Glenn says 6'4'' and all photographic evidence backs that too.
Anonymous said on 24/Mar/08
he makes arnie look 185 peak max
Kevint said on 24/Mar/08
Joe: If so, the weight numbers were off, if we're talking 6' 4" in stocking feet. He was slim, but still too heavily built in the shoulders and chest to be 6' 4"-212 pounds.
Jake Is Back said on 24/Mar/08
6'4" 212 lbs isn't thin. At 6'4" you need to be 190 lbs or less to be thin.
Joe said on 24/Mar/08
kevint. reeve was easily 6'4. he looks smaller because hes slouching and hes about a yard or 2 behind Glenn who is a full 5'8.
Kevint said on 23/Mar/08
Considering the 212 pound figure cited for his post-makeover body weight, I can't see him realistically at 6' 4". 76"/212 lbs. is thin. Reeve was a bit on the slim side, but not that slim.

Also, the above photo sort of speaks for itself. He looks 6' 2", max, unless Glenn is standing on a phone book.

Of course there's John Wayne Syndrome to consider--posthumously, any beloved, square-jawed hero actor will not only rise to his full "publicity height" but grow an extra inch or two. It doesn't surprise me that someone below posted that Reeve's "real" height was six foot five.
Clark said on 16/Mar/08
Honestly, I belive Chris Reeve was around 180-190 before he started lifting weights for S-man, but the 170-180 was reported so much nobody ever challenged it.
Actor Paul Satterfield stated that it was like meeting his double, and both stand at 6'4". Paul has a very similar build to Chris.

Very well observed Anon and so true!

It's not like Routh needed those thick boots, Singer just screwed up big time in the design of the suit..as well as the entire film really.

Anon said on 2/Mar/08
By the way, I've seen Reeve's boots in the Superman movies, and they are very thin with no heels. It was like he was walking around barefoot.

Compare that to Brandon Routh's enormous lifts in his boots.
patrick said on 29/Feb/08
SuperAnonymous, I would tend to agree with you. No less than 6
Clark said on 26/Feb/08
Supermanfan...Chris Reeve did NOT start off at 150lbs for the Superman role, that is insane. He was between 170-180 and then bulked up.
Joe said on 19/Feb/08
I would say an easy 6'4 for Reeve, maybe a tad taller. What was he like in person, Glenn? You're so lucky to have met him before he passed. R.I.P.
SuperAnonymous said on 14/Feb/08
Christopher Reeve was more than 6'4". He was definitely 6'5" in his prime. He had the "tall man syndrome" where he used to hunch and slouch to reduce his height by about an 1 - 1.5 inches. They time he walked with a straight back in upright posture was when he did superman movies. He is

Okay, so I've put together a photo montage of Reeve with various tall celebs (most of whom have pages on celebheights.com) and the dates the photos were taken;
Now, is there still doubt of Reeve being a solid 6'4" tall?!
supes78 said on 17/Jan/08
No problem. But in the original photo you posted, Reeve looked a good 2 inches shorter than Gossett so I knew that wasn't a great camera angle either. Here's a more straight on photo and probably the best one that exists from that event;
Keep in mind that Reeve is slouching slightly and cocking his head downward while Gossett's head is tilted more up. Regardless, both men look about the same height with Reeve possibly getting a little more height had he stood more erect. Gassett would have been in his mid 40s at the time and still at his peak height, which this site lists at 6'3.5" tall.

[Editor Rob: yeah, Reeve looked looser posture.]
supes78 said on 16/Jan/08
Here's a much better photo of Reeve standing side by side with atleast 6'3" Louis Gossett Jr from the 1983 Oscars;
Is there still doubt that Reeve was a solid 6'4" tall?

[Editor Rob: actually it's poorer also because with high angle the person who is slightly further - i.e. Reeve - has his height amplified a bit.]

TJ: I was referring to the mind set of Arnold--he does seem comfortable being "6 feet" and in the past saying he was 6'2"-- he has avoided questions about his height..not that is a big deal to me, but to him it is....
TJ said on 6/Jan/08
Clark, in what way is 6ft + vertically challenged?
clark said on 6/Jan/08
Does anyone have pics of Chris with verically challenged Arnold the governor.
Any pics with Supes and John Wayne after the 1st Superman movie.
