Editor Rob: There's huge swathes of potential footballers out there. I believe McQueen claimed 6ft 3.

Yeah, I'm inclined to believe that McQueen was a 6ft3 player whilst Jordan might've been 5ft11-6ft?
Editor Rob
I remember Jordan always seemed to leave a tall impression, but maybe part of that was his build. If you see them Together, about 3 inches difference I'd say. Albeit, they've both likely to have lost a little bit of height by that stage of life.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 25/Aug/23
Rob, any chance of adding Gordon McQueen and Joe Jordan?

Both Leeds, Man u and Scotland legends. Gordon was regularly described 6ft3 and 6ft4. Wouldn't have bat an eyelid at 6ft3 but noticed this 70's match card has him at 6ft2½ and 13st 3lbs Click Here. Sounds pretty precise but then Jack is at a full 6ft2 despite being down 6ft1½ in places. Joe I've read 5ft11 through to 6ft1 - seems to vary next to Gordon Click Here Click Here Click Here

Please tell me what you think?

I think in later years he could look closer to that mark, Viper. Even 15 years ago, he was still towering over all of his England teammates, including Geoff Hurst who Rob estimated to be near 5ft11 in person.

Really, Jackie looked a solid 6ft2 guy in his playing days. I'm starting to think he could have been a fraction over it more so than under.

Click Here that's only 6 years ago

6-1.5 could be an extreme low
viper said on 3/Apr/22
If he shrunk it's very little

In this photo it looks opposite Click Here

He is old there.

I still don't really know why a tough 1960s centre half would round down his height. I could understand if you were a 1920s actor maybe because 6ft2 was very tall back then and so being that tall may have had casting disadvantages but in football I can't see the downside, unless as a person Jack Just didn't relish being tall.
viper said on 1/Apr/22
He only looks 6-1 physically here imo

Maybe he was only 6-1.5 at night
viper said on 1/Apr/22
He honestly looks 6-3-6-4 quite a bit
viper said on 1/Apr/22
Yeah, I think this guy may actually look a bit taller physically than 6-2 Geno Smith.

6-2 is kinda hard to believe
viper said on 1/Apr/22
He didn't shrink at all it looks like
Editor Rob
He did lose height by his last few years.
IceCold said on 1/Apr/22
Tallest looking 6'2 guy, along with Bush Sr and Jacob Rees-Mogg
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 30/Aug/21
Jack still looked this through his 50's and 60's. Taller than most of the Ireland squad with the exception Quinn (strong 6ft4) and Cascarino (legit 6ft3 who rounded down to 6ft2). Edged McGrath, O'Leary and McCarthy (all minimum 6ft1)
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 9/Aug/21
Could look taller, Sandy...
Miss Sandy Cowell said on 5/Aug/21
I had no idea Jack was as tall as THAT!

6ft2. ⚽🤭👌⚽....🕯️
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 20/Jun/21
He looked 6ft2½-3 range too often to be less than 6ft2
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 2/Mar/21
Rob, could McGrath get a page?

6ft2 peak, 6ft1 now maybe...looked the same as an elderly Jack (then 6ft1)
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 28/Feb/21
Rob, how tall do you think Paul McGrath is?

I've seen both 6ft1 and 6ft2 listed for him...he varies in photos with Jack
Editor Rob
he claimed to be 6ft 2 at one point, but could have been 6ft 1-2 zone in his prime.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 25/Feb/21
Good call on this one Rob...this is what he most likely was in his playing days.

Honestly, there's still about 3in between him and Hurst...and he was passed 80 when that photo was taken!
Editor Rob
he held up well towards age 80, maybe just 1 inch was lost by then.
Rory said on 25/Feb/21
Think maybe sometimes if someone makes quite a low looking claim, it might be they measured themselves without standing tall.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 25/Feb/21
Rob, it's rare that someone would round down from a whole figure to a fractional one but I do think Jack looked more 6ft1¾-2 range than 6ft1½ (in his management days maybe could've been more that)

here he is with his World cup teammates just five years ago, still towering over them including Geoff Hurst who by your estimation was still near 5ft11

Editor Rob
I think maybe giving him that claim is ultimately the fair call as in his 70's he was still looking over 6ft near 6ft 1.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 23/Feb/21
Rob, would you be open to giving him that?

I think that or at least 6ft1¾
Editor Rob
Could he have rounded down to 6ft 1.5 in the old profile and was 6ft 2? It is a possibility.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 22/Feb/21
Rob, at 6:20 Jack describes himself as being 6ft2

that's a good find, it is a height he looked on the field.

Gladstone Screwer said on 29/Jan/21
@Leesheff85. Fair comment, Lee, I read that on some random site, but 5’8” for Bobby always felt a low guess. Jack, as a player, had to be 6’3” , even a bit over.
Leesheff85 said on 28/Jan/21
Gladstone nobby Stiles is 5ft 6 not 8
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 27/Jan/21
Gordan Banks is listed 6ft1....clearly miles from that if you look at the group shot of 66'
Gladstone Screwer said on 26/Jan/21
The 66 team’s heights are all over the place. Looking at them lining up before the final, Jack is far and away the tallest. He’s next to 6’1” Martin Peters and is at least 3 inches taller. Bobby Charlton looks way over 5’8”, he has four inches on Nobby Stiles, who was apparently 5’8 himself ! Unbelievable.

In every photo from Leeds and England back in the day he just stands out constantly like a giraffe . Always the tallest...That must’ve been an exceptionally short squad. The 6ft4-5 descriptions don’t actually surprise me that much when I see how massive he looked compared to the other guys
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 29/Sep/20
Rob, which of these peak is arguable?

A) 190.5cm/188.5cm
B) 190cm/188cm
C) 189.5cm/187.5cm
D) 189cm/187cm
E) 188.5cm/186.5cm
F) 188cm/186cm
G) 187.5cm/185.5cm

I’m going with C. In his playing days I think even B isn’t unrealistic. D would be the lowest. If he was 6ft1½, he was more likely on the better side of it. Looked all of 6ft2 range when he played for Leeds
Editor Rob
D is pretty much a low range, so I'm not ruling C-B range out entirely! He may well have been a bit modest.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 11/Sep/20
I’m gonna say Banks was 5ft11 range peak
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 7/Sep/20
The average guess I think looks better for him.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 27/Jul/20
Rob, where does this leave World Cup 66’ goalkeeper Gordon Banks?

Obviously nowhere the 6ft1 he was listed at if Jack was officially at this mark
Editor Rob
I've seen banks in person, he was like 5ft 10 maybe but had shrunk obviously, I don't know his peak.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 25/Jul/20
Rob, this article describes Big Jack as being a lofty 6ft5½

Editor Rob
Could understand 6ft 2.5 description as at times he looked quite tall, but 6ft 5.5 is a bit of an exaggeration!
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 13/Jul/20
Head and shoulders above the others on that World Cup team

@ Sandy Cowell - That’s true but people of all heights fabricate their height, Jack didn’t. Leeds United won for Jack today.

@Sandy Cowell. Come on Sandy - Bobby Moore was England captain in ‘66. Tut tut !
Miss Sandy Cowell said on 5/Jun/20
@ Nik - He has no reason to fabricate his height, standing in excess of 6ft1! I know things like that happen, but is it really necessary? He's comfortably tall!

6ft1.5 😉👍
Editor Rob
Most folk would probably give Jack 6ft 2 in his playing days, he was a towering presence on the field.
Nik Ashton said on 1/Jun/20

There's no way Jack Charlton is any less than 6'2 even now. Met him in the local shopping centre about 18months ago... Bless him he's diminishing in every sense of the term but I'd have to say he was over 6'3 in his day. Niall Quinn I'd say 6'5. McGrath maybe 6'1ish. The likes of Roy keane though goes the other way 5'8.5 tops, he was unbelievably small and weedy looking... Small man syndrome coupled with a Cork inferiority complex! Met alot of Irish, Liverpool and Newcastle players over the years... Amazing how footballers can be surprisingly shorter or taller than you'd imagined! Shearer 5'10.25, Kevin Nolan 6'1.25 but built with it.
Ferdinand said on 19/Sep/18
Seeing as there’s quite a bit of chat about Irish footballers in these comments, what do you reckon to Paul McGrath’s height? He’s always described as a pretty tall guy in his prime (Norman Whiteside, who himself is listed 6’2”, described McGrath as “a big, 6’4” guy” in an RTÈ documentary, and “a big six-foot-plus lad” in McGrath’s memoir). However he’s listed everywhere as 6’ flat, and I can’t find a picture that makes his height easy to guess...
Editor Rob
McGrath once described himsef as 6ft 2 on twitter.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 3/May/18
Cascarino was actually 6ft3 by Rob’s estimation but claimed 6ft2. Quinn is a good 6ft4. I saw him up close back in 2002 the homecoming in Dublin during the homecoming and was roughly my height.
jessman said on 28/Apr/18
Rampage....i can't see Jack lower than 6'2 in 1966. Maybe the height he gave in 1971 was a later in the day measurement, or there was an error? When Jack managed Ireland he was as tall as the bigger guys like Bonner and Cascarino (both 6'2 range) but not as tall as Quinn, who is genuine 6'4. Jack was taller than Mick Mccarthy...who gets 6'1 and 6'2 listings but was probably 6'1 max. My conclusion....Jack was over 6'2 as a player and about 6'2 in his fifties when he managed Ireland.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 27/Apr/18
Jessman he certainly gives 6ft3 impression in the 1966 World Cup photos. Looks bloody massive compared to his brother and everyone else...
Bazza said on 27/Apr/18
I always had him, and seen him listed around 6'3 so this surprises me a little, although footballers in general were very short and mostly all under 6 feet in the 60's and 70's so probably why Jack seemed to tower everyone even slightly under 6'2 himself.
jessman said on 26/Apr/18
He looked a good two inches taller than Gordon Banks, who was listed 6'1. They often stood beside each other in England squad photos. Heard Jack described as 6'5 before but this was obviously over-listed. I would have guessed Jack at between 6'2 and 6'3 in his prime. Maybe his lanky build gave the illusion of extra height.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 25/Apr/18
Used to think at least 6ft3! That 66’ squad must’ve been very short
Editor Rob
In his early 70's he was still above 6ft...
Sandy Cowell said on 25/Apr/18
I have never so much as wondered about Jack Charlton's height, but he was in everybody's good books for years after captaining the English team in 1966 to go on to win the World Cup! Yes, and he was affectionately known for years as 'Jackie'! He deserves a page on celebheights, to be sure! 👍

I go along with what is written here - of course! 6ft1.5 it is!⚽🏆
