Rob, at around 15:05 below, is 5'4" likely for Aznavour, compared with Coburn?

Rob, could you add his SKY RIDERS co-star, Charles Aznavour?

Arguably France’s most famous singer, and also a famous actor, so definitely worth a page. He has quoted himself as five feet four, and generally seemed that mark, although looked a tad shorter than Sammy Davis Jr. in photos. So, I feel Sammy was a fraction above 5’4”.

Rob, can you please add a page for his THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN co-star, Brad Dexter? Pretty renowned character actor back in the day. He gets listings from 184 cm - 188 cm but he didn't look as tall as Coburn.

Could he have been 6ft or so, Rob? Would love a page for him.

Also, what about Barry Nelson (THE SHINING)?
Editor Rob
Brad looked a bit shorter than Mitchum so I can see 6ft range for him. No chance of 6ft 1-2.

Not two years after I wrote about the James Coburn/Lynsey de Paul relationship, little Lynsey, who unfortunately is no
longer with us, has her own page on Celebheights! Hooray for that! The songstress was part of music history, and had many interesting relationships.

LOVED James’s performance in The Great Escape!

6ft1.75. Yes, I’ve upped him by a quarter of an inch.

James looked to be about 1/4 to 1/2 inch taller than Pernell Roberts when he was a guest on Bonanza. My estimate is 6'1 1/2.

I remember when James dated 70s songstress, the late 5ft Lynsey de Paul, who represented England in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1977, dueting with Mike Moran.

From the pictures of the couple in newspapers and magazines alone, I knew James was very tall, possibly believing he topped his actual height.

He gets 6ft1.5.

6'1.5 for coburn and 6'1 for Garner seems about right to me.

Coburn’s slim figure helped him to look very tall on film. For Coburn’s peak, I’d estimate 6’1.75”, although, I wouldn’t entirely dismiss the full 6’2”. Coburn was easily taller than Cary Grant in Charade and I don’t think Coburn was dwarfed by George Kennedy. Additionally, I think Coburn was a shade taller than 6’1.5” listed James Garner in The Great Escape and was roughly the same height as Richard Benjamin in The Last of Sheila.
Arch Stanton said on 21/Jun/20
Oh yeah, I mean anything with somebody like Coburn I'll watch. It was worth watching for Coburn and Mason but I felt the plot was very overcooked. The Carey Treatment was a very 70s looking film, I enjoy watching films just to see the period, it's like being in a time machine! If I could go back to any period in film history I think it would be 1955 Hollywood. Just the iconic cars and the look of the times, Back to the Future made a great choice!! Being a hippy type I'd love to see late 60s London too!
movieguy12 said on 20/Jun/20
Arch Stanton, sorry you weren't too impressed with the Last of Sheila, I found it very entertaining. Anything with Coburn in I'll watch. I do think though that Coburn always had the look of a 6'2'' guy though. Yeah you can argue just below 6'2'' but he was round about this mark I'd guess.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 8/Jun/20
True Arch, I felt he had the edge on Garner in Great Escape though. Both guys could look 6ft2

Watched the Last of Sheila last night. If you like older films its very entertaining with a script by Stephen Sondheim and Anthony Perkins which seems unbelievable.

I watched it on your recommendation, Not the greatest of films, Raquel looked like she didn't want to be there, but Coburn and Mason shined.
movieguy12 said on 29/May/20
Took a look at another Coburn classic 'The Carey Treatment'. Maybe not a great film but how cool is Coburn. A guy tells Coburn 'he is trying to take his measure' meaning trying to figure out what kind of person Coburn's character was. Coburn's razor sharp reply is ''6 ft one and a half'. I guess this is probably his actual height or maybe they decided that it was a better line than saying I'm 6 ft 2''.

Coburn looked similar in height to Richard Benjamin. Benjamin who showed up a lot in 70s movies is one of those actors where you recognise the face but don't know the name and looks a classic 6'2'' guy.
Arch Stanton said on 21/May/20
Yeah his lanky frame at times in films could look like a 6'2.5-6'3 guy. I still think Coburn and Garner looked nearer 6'2 flat most of the time. Garner was taller than Dean Jagger who wasn't far off Peck's height in his prime.

AntMan said on 21/Feb/19
6 feet 1.5 sounds accurate for James Coburn. He was slightly taller than 6 foot listed Leonard Nimoy in an episode of M Squad, in which they played brothers. Lee Marvin who bore a strong resemblance to Coburn also was in the show and looked a similar height to Coburn.
Both Marvin and Coburn could look taller due to their lean, gangling physiques. A tall guy but not as tall as fellow famed silver haired American Peter Graves listed as 6'3.
James said on 12/Oct/17

Perfect listing 186-187 cm peak. Fine actor, could be quite camp at times.
Jug said on 6/Aug/17
He looked closer to 6'1 next to George Kennedy in Charade but I think that Kennedy wore lifts in that film to look more imposing (he looked more than 6'4 next to Cary Grant, who was probably 6'0 at that point). Otherwise Coburn always looked like a strong 6'2.
Arch Stanton said on 4/Aug/17
Interestingly in Bite the Bullet (1975), Coburn looked a bit taller than Gene Hackman. If Hackman was 6'2 Coburn honestly looked 6'2.5-75, but could be boot difference or the ground level. In Prime cut (1972) Hackman actually looked about an inch taller than Marvin yet Coburn and Marvin are listed here at the same height. Height can be tough to figure out at times!

Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 4/Apr/17
I always thought a strong 6ft2 if Garner was a weak 6ft2. Maybe he just gave a taller because he was lanky while Garner was broad-framed
Arch Stanton said on 19/Mar/17
Actually in Hard Contract he doesn't look that much taller barefoot than 2-3 inches on a heeled Lee Remick, so maybe 6'1.5 is accurate.

If you want to compare Coburn to Eastwood, watch an episode of Rawhide on youtube, called Hostage Child. In it both Coburn, and Eastwood are in a scene together,on level ground facing each other, and Eastwood is about 2 inches taller. So Coburn would have been in the 6ft1 to 2 range,6ft1.5 sounds about right.
Ant said on 24/Feb/17
Sounds accurate. A shade taller than Leonard Nimoy and a tad shorter than Clint Eastwood. A tall guy who looked even taller due to his lean physique.

it would be a strange figure for his character to give, I think it is effectively a claim.
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 22/Nov/16
188cm is closer, IMO. Edged out James Garner in The Great Escape and could even appear 189cm at times. Very gangly-framed like Peter O'Toole. Could look from 6ft1 to 6ft3 depending on posture.

Could pass for 6 2 in magnificent 7 that is the only time he was that tall most of them were "average" and some short.
May have been as much as 6 2 peak he did have the tall guy lazy posture.
He still looked over 6 ft even as he got white haired so he was a legit tall guy for sure.

@Rob, what prompted the downgrade? Now Garner was a guy you can see at 6'1.5, but Coburn honestly generally looked a proper 6'2 to me.
Editor Rob: I think if his character had said 6ft 1.5, it seems to specific to not be the height he really claimed himself.

Where did he claim that? Keeping in mind Mel Gibson was 6 ft 3 in one film not longer back ;-) Yes, if his character said it in a film it's more likely, but if we have Coburn at 6'1.5 then most people need a half inch downgrade. Coburn to me generally looked a proper 6'2 guy. Though so did Sean Connery and he was suppoedly measured at 6'1.5 too!

Looks about only an inch taller than Leonard Nimoy in an episode of the late 1950's tv series M Squad. Coburn could have been 6'1.5" peak. I am curious if there are any pictures, movies or television episodes in which Coburn and Lee Marvin appear side by side. I would bet that Coburn and Marvin were very similar in height, as I suspect Marvin was probably between 6'1-6'1.5" peak height.

I was kind of surprised by how skinny looking he is in Ride Lonesome w/ Randolph Scott, I wouldn't be surprised if he weighed less than Jimmy Stewart's famed 138 pound measurement. It's possible that by the time he played Pat Garrett he was nearly 40 pounds more.

I thought he looked to be maybe struggling with the full 6'2" back in Ride Lonesome, being only a smidge taller than 6'1" Pernell Roberts and at times looking about a couple inches under Randolph Scott.
Here's an interesting shot of Coburn with Lee Van Cleef, who may have a slight edge over Coburn. Apparently they are "menacing" Clint Walker's good guy, LOL, in an episode of "Cheyenne". Van Cleef and Coburn were badasses but Walker was 6'6" and looked like he could have picked them both up at the same time.

In a 1972 movie, Coburn's character states his height as 6'1.5", which I think is the actor's true height. This explains why he was close to James Garner's height (6'1") when they worked together. I've also watched "Charade" recently, and Coburn is only marginally taller than (near) 6'1" Cary Grant.
Mr. Kaplan said on 25/Dec/10

Coburn did not look a full two inches taller than either Dick Shawn or Aldo Ray in " What did you do in the War Daddy" ( 1966) . Both Dick Shawn and Aldo Ray are usually listed as 6'0" even. I think there is a good possibility that Coburn was slightly below 6'2" even at his peak. I would say 6'1.5" is more likely his peak height.
Ed T. said on 16/Aug/08
