He looks terrible now. I feel bad for the man personally. He was a physical specimen, and now this. Its bad enough having demons, I know personally, but having demons cost you to waste possibly the greatest god given talent to fight in history. That hurts. And if he is that heavy now, it may be affecting his height, but I always argued the variance was the stooped posture. His chin was always down, like any smart boxer, even when he wasout in public
TNTinCA said on 20/May/08
Unless he had surgery on his spine or legs, it is highly unlikely that he lost any height at his age. I've always thought he looked 5'10", whether it be in his youth or his current age.
breekops said on 20/May/08
if i remember correctly i'd seen he was measure up before the ring, barefeet at 5'11
JD said on 20/May/08
definatley 5'11.5 in his prime , 5'10.5 would probably be what he is now
Yaspaa said on 20/May/08
I don't think he's lost height either.. Losing height in your 30s and 40s is highly doubtful, you would have to lose bone.
dits said on 20/May/08
its not common to find people losing some of their height when theyre in their mid-30s to 40s,but it does happen, especially if you're stocky, have been seriously weightlifting and training and have been under a lot of stress.i strongly believe tyson was 5'11 in his prime, from the late 80s to mid-90s,but he has probably lost a bit since then.
and yes, anonymous, you're right, people tend to overestimate the 'height loss' on this site.absolutely true.
Viper said on 19/May/08
I dont think hes shrubk.
Anonymous said on 19/May/08
How did he ever get listed at 5'11.5" anyway? I figured they would actually measure these guys. I remember seeing 5'11.5 in his fight vs. Lennox Lewis and thinking there is no way this guy is pushing 6'. I seriously doubt he has lost any height. People do lose height, but I think some on this site tend to over estimate that a bit; claiming that guys are losing height at 30 or 40. That's a tad ridiculous. When a guy hits 60, then we can talk about height loss, but I digress. He always struck me as a 5'9-5'10 guy. I would guess 5'9.5 -5'9.75 as a midday height.
dits said on 19/May/08
if he were 5'9 then he'd have huge difficulty in beating those 6'4-6'5 guys.he was probably 5'11 in his prime, but im sure he's 5'10 right now.
Produce said on 16/May/08
okay, standing next to other fighters like Ibragimov, Fedor , MC Bride , Hatton or Golota Tyson always looked 5-11 !! Standing next to other celebs, whp are listed here arround 5-10 or a bit more. But the strange thing is that most of the people, who met him , say there is no way he is 5-11 and when you see tyson is tv or on pictures , he seems to be shorter than 5-11. Many here swear tyson cant be taller than 5-9 , but one say he cant be short than 6 F. I think 5-10 is a good guess, but its possible thats a bit less.
thestudmeister said on 14/May/08
tyson aint 5'9 or 6ft thats a fact.
dits said on 12/May/08
no,not a 5'9.its not possible.if he were 5'9 you'd have to be downgrading every boxer that fought him in the 90s.i can accept 5'10,but 5'9 would be pushing it.just because people think he is 'shorter than they thought' doesn't mean he's 5'9.mike tyson is probably the most recognized face in boxing ever, and his bad boy image leads to him being imagined at 6 foot and over. when the same people meet him and see he isn't 6 foot, they end up saying 'Oh well,he's short'. when in reality he's taller than 65% of the population.
Viper said on 12/May/08

Produce said on 12/May/08
By now, I bealeve the 5-9. Most person, who met him say that and Tyson himself once said that he is asked 10 times a day how tall he is and that everybody is surprised that he is shorter than they thought. Previous I knever doubt the 5 11.5 , but it isnt contestet without reason.
Yaspaa said on 12/May/08

Holyfield is 6'0.5" Tyson is 5'9" a relative lives next door to Holyfield and I have seen him & chatted with him numerous times. Sounds punch drunk-ish & is always drinking cranberry spritzers. I know the son of Jimmy Jacob's boxing film archivist...met Tyson twice at his home in Smoke Rise..he is undeniably short but impressive thick.

Dits,I must admit 'Fulcrum' is a new word to me ,it sounds like someone full of cookies lol, obviously you're a big fan though.
James, watching Buster Douglas beat Tyson was for me a sorry affair,he didn't beat Tyson, he beat circumstances and I have barely watched boxing since, thank God for the UFC. Once you know what all the cuddling is about it becomes amazing!
dits said on 10/May/08
tyson was pretty dangerous as it is.he blasted off guys who were 6'2 (holyfield,berbick,tillman..) to guys who were even taller (a lot). he was probably the shortest heavyweight at his time, and he was the best.it was difficult to knock him down because his low centre of gravity.being short kinda played to his advantage.
as yaspaa says,if he were tall,he would've been a completely different boxer.taller boxers have longer reach and have trouble in close situations.tyson didnt have this problem,by getting close he devastated his opponents.not only that, his shorter reach gave him a better 'fulcrum' for his arms, making him more likely to hit his opponents where he wished to.and not to mention,he had great speed, and coupled with his great speed was great strength.if you see some of the knockouts he did..the guys struggled to get up even after 5 minutes of getting knocked.that kind of strength is difficult to develop for a guy who's 6'3,6'5 and above.most of the world's strongest men have been around the 5'11-6'1 mark, and its the people who're 6'3 and above who struggle in the competition.

Yaspaa you the man!!!
glenn said on 8/May/08
thats a scary thought james.
Yaspaa said on 7/May/08
Nah James, that thought doesn't comprehend,Tyson would be a completely different boxer if he were that tall. Tyson used his relatively shorter dimensions to his own advantage, getting in close, throwing quick short hooks and uppercuts (I'm refering to the the original Tyson not the artist formerly known as Tyson, who should have continued on to become the greatest heavyweight ever had circumstances taken a different route) which is why the 'rope a dope' would not work against Tyson. Everyone remembers Tyson's power but they forget about his speed,he could really bang out those combo's,robotically fearless and he was always constantly moving, throwing knockout punches from unorthodox angles.... a mile away from the stagnant, broken, one dimensional boxer that fights today.
You know I am a Brit but Lennox would not have lasted in the ring with a prime Tyson,he would have done what they all did,try to stay away from Tyson and survive long enough to hopefully win a points victory due to the 1000 jabs they have thrown. I wish Cus D'Mato had been 15 years younger,15 more years to steer Mike in the right direction, there wouldn't be any doubt regarding his greatness.
The heavyweight division is all about size now,a bunch of
trolls with clubs which is why it is and has been for quite some time...sheeeeatt.

There are a number of reasons tyson looks bigger than 5'9.5'' first of all hes did that many sit ups he did'nt do many back extensions to rectify the sit-up so he always had a stoped over poisture. Also when he was growing up cus d'amato got him to run with a ruck sack that carried weights so he wouldn't grow any taller because it didn't suit his style. Also he is naturally very broad so when he was in the ring fighting 6'6 guys his neck and body were so broad he looked bigger than he really was. I tell you now for sure tyson is not 1 milimetre taller than 5'10'' if he even is this

tyson is easily 5'10,he couldent have been shorter,i mean at 230lbs he looks in such good shape and streamlined,he carries his weight so well,if he was less then 5'10 he would have looked extreamly stocky at 230lbs,how many 5'9 guys do u know who are a muscular 230lbs!he needs some serious upgrading.

but glenn, if tyson really was 5.11 1/2 , why did the press used to ask him how tall he is? Tyson once said, that people ask him 10 times a day how tall he is and everybody would say that they are surprised how short he is when they meet him. Vitali Klitschko far example said that tyson was far smaller than he thought when they met the first time. And many peoples here say that there is no way he really was 5-11. derbi, its true that tyson alwys lookes like he was reportet in the ring. but there is a possibility that the heights of the boxers are generally ranked to high. So you would see a 5.11-Tyson against a 6-3 Holmes and tyson would look 4 inches shorter. But tyson would also look 4 inches shorter, if tyson was 5-9 and holmes was 6-1.

Goodness me, another one ive met, maybe i should become an official contributor to this site, just i dont look for them and dont walk around with a camera ! He was in my local Gym ( Morrisons Gym, Dalmarnock, Glasgow) and a few of us met him, now being a boxer i OBVIOUSLY know my own height and the heights and weights of all the boxers at my club. The man was 5'10. Not a doubt!! I saw him standing straight up for pictures next to 2 or 3 fighters, one who was 5'10 ( Dean ) who was the exact same height as him! and this was a good couple of years ago btw. this is the gyms website and tyson is on the main page ot prove he did infact come to my gym

If Mike Tyson is 5'11", I guess that means Eddie Murphy is a shade up 6ft, because Eddie definitely looked taller than Tyson.

trueheight said on 10/Mar/08
whoops!
I meant to say in reference to the video that it was SUPPOSED to prove that Tyson was 5'11.5 rather than 5'10.
trueheight said on 10/Mar/08
derbi:
You don't shrink one inch or 2.5cm from the age of 20 to 40. If that was the case then about 60% of the heights here for Hollywood actors would be considered an underestimate. The truth is, shrinkage starts at about an average age of 50 for men of 2mm a year at the most.
Tyson saying he's really 5'10 rings true but then again, Tyson's a bit of a masochist in terms of self-evaluation.
But that video that was supposed to "prove" he's 5'10 was complete bunk on three counts:
1. No way to tell if he was barefoot or shoed - the shot starts at half-calf level
2. The shot is upshot angled which helps to increase height; if it was downward, it would lower the perception of height
3. #2 only works (camera angles) only matter if the Tyson's head isn't actually touching the chart. In the video we can tell from the initial calf-shot that he is about 1 foot away from the chart.
If #3 is true, then to get an accurate measurement, the angle must be completely perpendicular. In the video it is not, and is instead in his favor. So he's got at least 2 things that boosted him for that shoot to look like 5'11" on the money - we cannot be sure about point #1 - did he have shoes on or not?
I think 5'9.5 is a relatively safe estimate.
derbi said on 10/Mar/08
Well, maybe he really measured him self 5'10" in 2005. Then but then he is 5'10" and not 5'9.5". And eventhough he will only be 42 this year, I think he was a good inch taller in his prime time. So I'd say 5'11.5"-5'11" peak height and nowadays probably 5'10".

Editor Rob
he stood in front of a board in his prime and with the angle of the camera and his distance in front of it, there is small probablity in my opinion he was over 5ft 10.
glenn said on 10/Mar/08
exactly.this is too low.then if he said 5-10,then why 5-9.5? he looked 5-11 next to fighting giants.

5,10 - 5-11 4 prime knee and back problems plus age may have decresed his height a bit plus his stocky figure make him look shorter
derbi said on 8/Mar/08
Rob, you really have this one wrong. I pretty hore looking at old fights, that he was 5'11.5" / 5'11" peak. Maybe he can look 5'10" nowadays, bu I'd still say 5'11". NO WAY IS HE 5'9.5"!!!!!!!!!

Editor Rob
but he measured himself 5ft 10 and made the point about it, so I wouldn't put him above that.
glenn said on 7/Mar/08
obviously your new here dadd.thats not the point.the point is whether tyson is 5-9 to 5-11.5.sightings range him at these heights.adam-i thought he looked 5-11 next to lewis.which is still a huge difference.
Adam Brennon said on 7/Mar/08
He looks two or three inches shorter than Holyfield at most. Although a boxing match is probably not the best context in which to judge height as both fighters are crouching in defensive postures and ducking and so fourth. The only opponent who really made him look diminutive was Lewis (6' 5"). Wish they'd fought in the late 80's or early 90's.

I read in a book that you don't stop growing until your 40 and after that you start to shrink! I know that you wouldnt grow much in them years between 20-40 so if tyson did say hes was a pathetic 5'10'' in 2005 well we have to assume hes no bigger than that. Yea Glenn I've often wandered that too but as you know its more about what weight you are in boxing rather than what height you are so he probably just told them what height he was and lied.
glenn said on 3/Mar/08
why do people seem to forget tyson was billed at 5-11.5? and he looked it fighting 6-5 guys.again, the man is 5-10ish,5-11.min.
stewart said on 2/Mar/08
Well he did claim to be a pathetic 5'10'' so why would he lie?? He looks bigger than he really is because he is so broad. If I was to lie about my height I'd say I was taller than I really was and not the other way about so it makes me believe more that tyson is 5'9.5''
Alex said on 2/Mar/08

Produce said on 29/Feb/08
But Tyson cant be 6-2 , so there must be something wrong. Based on standing next to his opponents, id say 5.11 . For example , Tyson looks about 2 inches shorter tahn Ibragimov, who is supposed to be 6-1. But outsie the ring more than 5-9. So I think Tyson could be abput right, when he said 5-10, maybe a little shorter.

TNTinCA said on 27/Feb/08
I still think Tyson was right around the 5'10" mark. Any shorter and it just would have been too obvious that he was fudging his height.
His billed height during fights was 5'11 1/2". Now I am around 5'10" and it would be possible to pass for 5'11" with the right shoes. But anybody who was less than 5'10" would have a hell of a time saying they were near 6 foot!
derbi said on 26/Feb/08
5.9.5" is too short for him! Just look at a couple of box fights, there aren't any footwear and pavement questions then. You'll see he's probably like 5'11".
Big T said on 24/Feb/08
No Stewart, 5'9.5" is AVERAGE for a man without shoes. 5'8" is below average...just wondering, how come you believed you were 5'10"? How could you measure yourself so incorrectly, or were you always just guessing?

special shoes with a inch and a half heel? you guys do know that boxing shoes are designed to be as flat, right? inch and a half heel would mess up your ankles bad and would not be able to box in them.
AAAA said on 1/Feb/08
Eric, the boxing shoes he wore in the ring were standard with no more than a 3/4 in heel if that. Any thing bigger and you would have to be too far up on your toes for good footwork. A thin heel allows you to bounce without being on tip toes. Look at some of the videos where they have close ups of his footwork when he is jumping rope. Try Mike Tyson KO king on youtube or Mike tyson trainig. hey will show his feet. If those shoes are much over a half in heel i'd be shocked. They sure don't look it

MC Bride was about 2 inches taller than 6`4- Golota! So I think its right. And Tyson looks about 7 inches shorter than MC Bride, so based on these figures, Tyson could be 5.11! And as I said before, Tyson wasnt much shorter than Ibragimov, maybe 2 inches and Ibragimov is about 6 inches below Wladimir, so Tyson really can be/ coud have been 5.11.

You guys do realise that the height chart in the video some are talking about was most likely positioned so that it aligned with his correct height on screen rather than positioned to actually measure height, don't you? Tyson is 5'9 1/2"? What nonsense. He was always listed at either 5'11" to 5'11 1/2" for EVERY fight he was in and I'm supposed to believe what the people here say over the official ring measurements? Seriously, why would his height have been faked by the television networks. It would mean that so many of his opponents' heights have been faked, because, for example, Holyfield wasn't close to five inches taller, and many other guys have been closer to his height than 5' 9 1/2" would allow according their listed heights. This site has a real load of nonsense on it.

The man is a clear 5ft11. You don't get a 19-20inch neck on a 5ft9 guy. That a massive neck. A 5ft9 guy would find it hard to pack that much muscle on and stay lean for fighting at heavyweight. He just looks shorter because of his very stocky build. Yes he was small for a heavyweight boxer but not that small. There were always rumors that he was smaller back in the 90's too but who wouldn't look small next to some of the 6ft5 boxers. You need a photo proof don't just make it up

Tyson couldn't have made crusierweight easily. Remember, at 20 yrs old he was 222 lb with about 5.5% body fat.
To get to 195, he would have had to drop almost 30 lbs of muscle. He wouldn't have had the same punching power. He was too naturally stocky to be under 200lbs. I read he was 200lb at age 13, and could already bench over his own body weight.
I believe tyson may have been 5'10.5 when younger, and they added an inch. could have been 5'10.75 as well, but .25 in is geting really specific. His posture is rally crappy now any way. His neck is forever tilted foward. I guess that happens when you have a 20in neck

I'd say 5'9 1/2-Weak 5'11 tops. But besides that you gotta give him credit for being so small (Not that small but y'know) yet such a legenday boxer.
Albi said on 13/Aug/07
He never looked short in the ring. Always the shortest, but never short to create him problems; except against McBride, but which time he was too slow to get inside the opponent fast enough. I don't know how tall he actually is, but he has fought like a 5'11. Maybe because he was too fast. Slow fighters like James Toney and David Tua do show their height from the difficulty of hitting the opponent, but Tyson didn't have that problem, at least in his first 5 years.

I've seen him look shorter than Sugar Ray Leonard on Arsenio Hall when they had the champions show with Ali and the two of them.

Tyson didnt sound like someone , who
lies about his height, becouse he called himself "a ****ing dwarf" . But maybe he meassured himself not correctly. He looks about 5`9 , but standing next to Wayne Rooney, SR Leonard or MC Bride he looked more like 5 11. The people here, who had seen him in reality described him from 5`8 to 5`11. So, the 5`9.5 could be about right.

Yeah!!!!
This is bizarre!
I believed in Tyson when he said he was 5ft10, but it likes he is shorter than that!
For that video, if Murphy was 5ft10, I would say Tyson was no more than 5ft9 that time!

eddie murphy here is reported 9'25'' and mike tyson 9'5'' but in this vid it seems like mike is slighlty shorter. is it the angle of the cam ?? is it because of the shoes ??? or is mike 5'9'' ??

Both Elio and Jason are absolutely rigth!
Taller bodybuilder have to struggle a lot more to look really big!
But taller people (not necessarelly bodybuilders) usually have more well proportioned physique . I am talking about normal people between 6ft to 6ft3. It is very common to a man under 5ft10 to look a little bit stocky, specially below 5ft7.
I am 5ft11, 200lbs and very stocky!
But it is not a question. Most women do prefer tall man!
Elio said on 25/Jun/07
My take on the matter is this: Taller people (those 6 foot plus) generally have longer lower torsos, which makes the lats appear to attach higher up on the torso (not a good feature for bodybuilding). Also It's rare that someone with very long legs will have good leg development, particularly in the calves. Generally, the longer a muscle, the lower the potential for the proportional thickness of the muscle belly.
Sucessful 'taller' bodybuilders such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lou Ferrigno, Ralf Moeller, Gunter Schlierkamp are genetically blessed exceptions to this rule. Given the current day emphasis on upper leg size in bodybuilding, I think Schwarzenegger and Moeller would both struggle trying to get the extra mass on their proportionally long (and naturally slim) legs.
Jason said on 24/Jun/07
Boxing fighter is right. Bodybuilders are shorter because it's easier to gain muscle and look big at that height, not because it's the optimum height to be. Even in bodybuilding it's held that other things being equal, the taller bodybuilder will look better and have better aesthetics. It's easy to look stumpy for 5'9''-5'10'' big bodybuilders and weightlifters.
Boxing Fighter said on 24/Jun/07
People in bodybuilding are often small because it is harder to lock really big when you are tall. And bodybuilding is some kind of subculture with a "special" aesthetics concept. Tall people are often more balanced. It is not just my opinion, it is the opinion of the fashion, TV, artists and almost everyone.
A 6ft2 guy is not a giant at all! He is just a perfectlly normal tall guy.
I do agree, $ makes a lot of difference. But I think a women would prefer a tall rich guy instead a average or a short rich guy.

Boxing Fighter, perfect height is the region in with the body of a man tends to be the most estetictly balance, it's not just my opinion look at the majority of men who are body builder, most are from around 5'7 to 5'11 look at people in general most people with great shapes are from 5'7 to 6'0 in men & from around 5'4 to 5'8 in women ..... its not my opinion it's just how it is, i'm just glad i'm in the perfect height region i'm only 1.77 mtrs & glad so, i mean look at people 99.9 percent of guys over 6'0 feet have ugly body's and look strange you can not agree with it but that it what nature is saying
p.s. Many womens do prefer mens taller than 6ft2. hahahahahaahahaha
yeah shure some i guess do, but the majoryty whant a guy with $ & normal height, not a 6'2 giant!

Are u crazy Purepecha Mminds?
What the hell was that perfect height stuff?
Sorry my man, but I really don't agree with you.
Since when someone with 6ft3 must look like strange?
I am 5ft11 and I am definetely not perfect!!
By the way, perfect to what? To who?
Many womens do prefer mens taller than 6ft2.
Jason said on 16/Jun/07
You only really need to get away with it on TV. Most people aren't gonna see Tyson or any other celeb close up in person.
Danimal said on 15/Jun/07
Good question Glenn. No idea. Did you ever meet him?
glenn said on 15/Jun/07
how do they get away with 5-11.5 for tyson then?
Danimal said on 14/Jun/07
Jay Cutler is not an ideal bodybuilder. He is built like a fridge, with a wide waist, NO vascularity and btw, he's shorter than 5'9". Closer to 5'8" in reality.
Purepecha Mminds said on 14/Jun/07
Well .... i was measured by meters & centimeters i'm exactly 1.77 just a couple of centimeters above mike's 1.75, but any way's he's got perfect height look at he's body look at JAY CUTLER'S body he's also 5'9 if they where un normally tall over six foot they shure woulnt have does awsome body's
PJ said on 13/Jun/07
I've stood eye to eye with him on a few occasions, first in '87, last in 2000 ... he's definitely not and never was 5'10.
Produce said on 12/Jun/07
purepecha mm: 5`9 ist about 175 cm, not 177..
pj: really? Hmm, seems like tyson really never had been 5 11.5....
PJ said on 12/Jun/07
Met him several times, he's 5'9 and perhaps 5'9.5 first thing in the morning (I'm 5'9) ... he's definitely not 5'10.
Anonymous said on 10/Jun/07
ok Tyson may not have been 5,11 in his prime but he was somewhere between 5,10 and 5,10 and a half , i use 2 c him measured at the weigh ins 5,9 and a half may b his height now cause of his back and knee injurees boxing is very demanding physically so glenn i suggest u put a peak height of 5ft10 to 5 ft 10.5
Purepecha MMinds said on 9/Jun/07

jjj: what would you say how tall tyso exactly is? Where did you meet him?
jjj said on 30/May/07
this has to be the best site ever. I ran into Tyson today, I'm 6'5 and I was definitely looking down at him. I could have rested my chin on the top of his head, the difference was that bad. I had to google his height because I was surprised at how short he was.
Produce said on 7/May/07
bobbe: Larry Merchante once said tyson is 180 cm and tua 175 cm.....
Steve said on 7/May/07
I met Tyson in Vegas, I'm 6'1, and I was around 4-5 inches taller than him
