Tyson was short for a heavyweight. I'm no expert but Tyson himself decribed the 'average heavyweight' as 6' 2" or 3". But at 5 10" or 11" he wasn't short in relation to the general male population.

I can jus repeat what glenn said and i've been repeating now for a long time: 5.9'5" is just absurd. 5'10" is really the absolute minimum. I'm preatty covinced he's even been 5'11.5" or 5'11". End of the discussion.

you must rem folks that its all to do with the footwear..plus tysons sholders are very high up and also very very built up and that can make you look a lot taller...and that picture with danero - tyson is standing in front of him but ad say there wud be only a couple of inches from their top o their heads...he just makes him look like a migit because tyson is so broad. 5 10'' for me!

hearing and seeing are two vastly different approaches to guage a height.all due respect.i never saw the guy.until i do,i believe he is between 5-10 and 5-11.5. never 5-9.i read 5-9 before most of you in 1986 when my father first turned me on to him.but sorry,im not a boxing expert,a bit of a fan though,and tyson did not look 5-10 fighting those giants.he did look near 6ft.he held his own impressively.some people told me that grew up with him that he was my height.

I have been hearing 5'9"-5'10" as far back as the mid 90's when he was still very much at his peak height. He's MAX 5'10" IMO.

If he claims 5'10" (and describes it as pathetic) I'd doubt he's short changing himself by an inch and a half. He is a really candid guy. That said maybe a slightly higher listing would be more accurate. Although I haven't really studied him so I'm not sure.

Also when he was growing up cus d'amato got him to run with a ruck sack that carried weights so he wouldn't grow any taller because it didn't suit his style.Also he is naturally very broad so when he was in the ring fighting 6'6 guys his neck and body were so broad he looked bigger than he really was. I saw him in the gym at the Midland hotel when he fought in Manchester he is about the same height as me, 5ft 10. he was hitting a heavy bag he is awesome if he hit a normal guy he would kill them. Not tall though just average. I'll bet he isn't bothered though!

So you would see a 5.11-Tyson against a 6-3 Holmes and tyson would look 4 inches shorter. But tyson would also look 4 inches shorter, if tyson was 5-9 and holmes was 6-1.

I saw Tyson in person in 1995. He was 29 at the time so it's highly unlikely he lost any height by that point. Mike looked about 5'9" when looking at the pictures. I was about 5'8" at the time, and was almost eye to eye with him, and my father who is 5'11" was clearly taller than Tyson.

If you agree that people make mistakes and also agree that as a human you are one of those people, do you not also agree that you are also liable to make those same mistakes regardles of how long you have been taking celebrity pictures. Anybody can do what you do. I've been taking pictures of my family for over fifty years. Just because they are not celebrities doesn't make your judgments on height any more trustworthy than mine.
If you agree that people make mistakes and also agree that as a human you are one of those people, do you not also agree that you are also liable to make those same mistakes regardles of how long you have been taking celebrity pictures. Anybody can do what you do. I've been taking pictures of my family for over fifty years. Just because they are not celebrities doesn't make your judgments on height any more trustworthy than mine.

Well, maybe he really measured him self 5'10" in 2005. Then but then he is 5'10" and not 5'9.5". And eventhough he will only be 42 this year, I think he was a good inch taller in his prime time. So I'd say 5'11.5"-5'11" peak height and nowadays probably 5'10".

Editor Rob he stood in front of a board in his prime and with the angle of the camera and his distance in front of it, there is small probablity in my opinion he was over 5ft 10.

A thin heel allows you to bounce without being on tip toes. Look at some of the videos where they have close ups of his footwork when he is jumping rope. You guys do realise that the height chart in the video some are talking about was most likely positioned so that it aligned with his correct height on screen rather than positioned to actually measure height, don't you? Tyson is 5'9 1/2"? What nonsense. He was always listed at either 5'11" to 5'11 1/2" for EVERY fight he was in and I'm supposed to believe what the people here say over the official ring measurements? Seriously, why would his height have been faked by the television networks. You guys do realise that the height chart in the video some are talking about was most likely positioned so that it aligned with his correct height on screen rather than positioned to actually measure height, don't you? Tyson is 5'9 1/2"? What nonsense. He was always listed at either 5'11" to 5'11 1/2" for EVERY fight he was in and I'm supposed to believe what the people here say over the official ring measurements? Seriously, why would his height have been faked by the television networks. Boxing shoes typically give just 1/4''. I think he sometimes wore thicker-soled ones, but he wouldn't been able to wear anything that'd make him look taller than he is. You need thin soles for footwork.

To get to 195, he would have had to drop almost 30 lbs of muscle. He wouldn't have had the same punching power. He was too naturally stocky to be under 200lbs. I read he was 200lb at age 13, and could already bench over his own body weight.

Editor Rob you are the dummy for not realising the camera angle is enhancing his apparent height. If the camera was near the top of his head then maybe it would illustrate his height better. It wasn't though, the camera panned up from a low height and was miles off being as high as even 5ft 8!

Slow fighters like James Toney and David Tua do show their height from the difficulty of hitting the opponent, but Tyson didn't have that problem, at least in his first 5 years.

My take on the matter is this: Taller people (those 6 foot plus) generally have longer lower torsos, which makes the lats appear to attach higher up on the torso (not a good feature for bodybuilding). Also It's rare that someone with very long legs will have good leg development, particularly in the calves. Generally, the longer a muscle, the lower the potential for the proportional thickness of the muscle belly.
Sucessful 'taller' bodybuilders such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lou Ferrigno, Ralf Moeller, Gunter Schlierkamp are genetically blessed exceptions to this rule. Given the current day emphasis on upper leg size in bodybuilding, I think Schwarzenegger and Moeller would both struggle trying to get the extra mass on their proportionally long (and naturally slim) legs.

Boxing Fighter, perfect height is the region in with the body of a man tends to be the most estetictly balance, it's not just my opinion look at the majority of men who are body builder, most are from around 5'7 to 5'11 look at people in general most people with great shapes are from 5'7 to 6'0 in men & from around 5'4 to 5'8 in women ..... its not my opinion it's just how it is, i'm just glad i'm in the perfect height region i'm only 1.77 mtrs & glad so, i mean look at people 99.9 percent of guys over 6'0 feet have ugly body's and look strange you can not agree with it but that it what nature is saying

ok Tyson may not have been 5,11 in his prime but he was somewhere between 5,10 and 5,10 and a half , i use 2 c him measured at the weigh ins 5,9 and a half may b his height now cause of his back and knee injurees boxing is very demanding physically so glenn i suggest u put a peak height of 5ft10 to 5 ft 10.5

this has to be the best site ever. I ran into Tyson today, I'm 6'5 and I was definitely looking down at him. I could have rested my chin on the top of his head, the difference was that bad. I had to google his height because I was surprised at how short he was.

i went online to see how tall he was because i was next to him at the movies on march 17th, 2007 and thought wow he is really shorter than i thought he would be. i am 5 feet 6 and my husband is 6 feet and i barely had to raise my eyes to his eyes and my husband was taller by far- i am thinking 5 feet 9 or so would be about right and he had shoes on and i had flats on. but wow is he solid and wide.

I still beleive america has the best athaletes in the world but they have gotten soft and were not willing to force themselves to work hard and beat other boxers from the world. Plus I believe a lot of the taller boxers from Russian areas are using performance anhancers that are undetectable. there is know way a 6"5" person should be able to fill out with muscle they way they have been. If that is the case tyson should come back and wipe their ass on princible.

I think they show that to show his real height if it was his heihgt in shoes then they would of showed the measuering diffrently there is no real difference between 5 10 and 5 11 so they would lie and say his 5 11 if he wasn't

Tyson does look taller then Leonard in that photo, but that could be due to the floor and to shoes. Also, I think Leonard is closer to 5'9'' then 5'10'' personally. Marvin Hagler is pretty short too. I don't think 5'7'' is out of the question for him.

That picture was literally 12-13 hours after winning a fight in Atlantic City he is fit at probably 250lbs. 6'7" in anything but socks. Vitaly is actually well over an inch taller than Wladimir and is a true badass. I saw him kickbox a few times years ago before he switched to boxing. Loves to fight. Both are PhDs.

That picture was literally 12-13 hours after winning a fight in Atlantic City he is fit at probably 250lbs. 6'7" in anything but socks. Vitaly is actually well over an inch taller than Wladimir and is a true badass. I saw him kickbox a few times years ago before he switched to boxing. Loves to fight. Both are PhDs.

Vitali's been listed at 199cm before, that's only 6'6 1/2''. I would have guessed Wlad is 196cm/6'5 1/4''.

Sorry for the typos in the Burger King photo post...my cats keep fighting for my lap while I am at the computer. He is 6'4.5" at 220lbs. A fairly big guy and Wladimir dwarfs him like he was a child.
