She could've lost some height over the years. At least half inches. She got edged out by a flat 5'8" Riz Ahmed in some of their photos together. Again, footwear must be taken into consideration, I agree.

Rene Russo's height has been erroneously listed as 5'6" (peak) in various celeb bios, but she appears to be a leggy 5'8" in "Mr. Destiny"(1990).

I can be of help on 3 comments below. As far as Emilio Estevez, that movie is one of the most common examples cited of tricks used to minimize the height difference between the short leading man and tall leading lady, including famously having Rene walk in a ditch. Now for Ransom, if you notice, she's in flats while both Gibson and Sinise are in thick boots or shoes. As for the Lethal Weapon 4 premiere, Mel in what I'd bet were normal dress shoes did look similar to Rene in heels that gave her an advantage, but the heels definitely looked less than 3". She's probably either 5'7.5" or 5'8", but at that same premiere, you do get the impression that a 5'10" max Chris Rock is easily taller than Rene in those 2"+ range heels: Click Here

In Ransom, Rene appeared only 1.5 inches shorter than Mel. Those pictures below are deceptive, and/or Mel is wearing lifts. I still think Mel is a genuine 5'9 - 5'9.5 guy.

I heard the same height for Rene (5 foot 8). She also said that at age 10, she had to start wearing a full body cast for scoliosis. So I'm guessing she probably would have been a little shorter had she not worn that cast.

5ft8 would make sense, just saw The Thomas Crown Affair and she wears at least 3 inch heels throughout the whole thing, and Brosnan is not much taller than her. Maybe 1 1/2 pushing 2 inches. The same for Dennis Leary. I think he is 6ft2 and Brosnan is 6ft1.
