Ah, what lovely memories this fellow brings back! My Mum wouldn't miss 'Porridge' for the World! She even laughed when a few of the prisoners managed to slip out for a day and came back slightly worse for wear for drinking.....

There was a girl in my class with a massive crush on Richard, but I preferred Ronnie!

@ littlesue - His look-alike daughter Samantha has a page now! 😁👍

I go for 6ft.

RIP Funny Guy Richard xxx

I just looked it up, and I am astonished that he died so young. Only 31 years old, and he's the father of Kate Beckinsale, or was.

Would have guessed 5 11 Maybe 6 0 max from what i remember going to check out porridge again with ronnie barker that was a great comedy shame he passed so young he was a talented actor

Why does no-one ever mention his daughter Samantha? She may not be as famous as Kate, but she looked tall enough (and nice enough) to merit a mention here, and she did star in a one-off comedy-drama alongside Brian Conley. It was the only time I thought Conley was funny.

Good to see Richard Beckinsale in here. He looked to be about 2" taller than Leonard Rossiter in Rising Damp and notably slouched in the TV show (lots and lots of pics of both of them standing together via a google search). Rossiter is listed on IMDB as 5'9" which might be a tad generous but that sounds ballpark correct. What movieguy said - well loved by the British public, his death was a great shock to all of us around that time.
Editor Rob: Leonard does have 5ft 9 in the spotlight casting directory from the 70's, so that's at least his claim, although it is true at times he looked very similar to Frances.

He reminds me of Brandon Lee or a young Timothy Hutton...

It would be interesting to see where he could have gone in his career

Had a tall lean look. I think 6ft is about right. Had the potential to have become a big star like his daughter but unfortunately died very young. Well loved by the public of the time.

I think 6ft is too much. On This is your Life he was similar to 5ft 10 listed Eamond Andrews and Beckensale had cuban heels on. Andrews heels could not have been bigger than those.

Eamonn Andrews was in excess of 6'. What do you think Rob?
Editor Rob: not sure exactly, but he has been described 6ft, Andrews that is.

I wouldn't say "complete double", but yes, there's a good facial resemblance though, unlike with Kate.

His older daughter Samantha Beckinsale who was in London's burning is the complete female double of him!! she was quite a tall girl too.

That's incorrect. If he was wearing 2 inch heels, then he would look 6'0.5" or 6'1", not 6'2", since regular shoes have about an inch of heel height.
Jason said on 25/Jul/16
My money would be on 5'10.5" with shoes taking him to 6'. Hence the 1970's 6' listing.
Arch Stanton said on 25/Jul/16
Yeah 182 is probably the best shout overall. Wore big heels which gave him a 6 ft 1-2 impression at times like in that photo!
Rampage(-_-_-)Clover said on 24/Jul/16
Rob, how big would you say those heels are?

I thought he was at least 6ft2!
Editor Rob: around 2 inch types I thought

Rob, I have studied Richard Beckinsale many times in his tv roles, most notably Porridhe with 5' 7.75" Ronnie Barker. With virtual identical footwear and in very clear full view shots on even ground. Barker reaches Beckinsale's eyebrows. A max advantage of 3.5" and that's been generous. (This is Barker not fully straight either). I would bet a lot of money that Beckinsale was 5'10.5" - 5'11" barefoot. 6ft in shoes with a decent heel. I think if you study him Rob, I think it'd become apparent very quickly. What a great actor though. He actually passed away on my 1st birthday!
Editor Rob: having had a look at some clips now, I think I could see an argument for under 6ft...

Surprised he was this tall, would have said more about 5ft 10
Arch Stanton said on 24/Jul/16
Thanks, seems a good shout. In one photo I saw he looked like a 6'1-6'2 guy but had on big heeled boots so I thought 6' range more likely. He had a very distinctive look, but obviously Kate bears no resemblance to him whatsoever!
Editor Rob: actually there is a chance he was shorter than this, some of the footwear in that day was a bit thick, I might look at a few more clips.
