I'm confused. A lot of pictures show stallone varying in height from short to towering over everyone. If he's 5'10 he is actually pretty tall above average height. That guy from the Italian Job who said he was the real napster looked like he is 5'7, and if he wore special shoes making him 4 inches taller, it would be obvious and he would look like a short guy with long legs, fat feet and short arms. Stallone doesn't look like that standing next to other six foot celebrities, he looks well proportioned, even with his supposed "lifts." As I never met him, I am inclined to believe Glenn.

Look at the picture above and the trainers he's wearing Click Here - just looking at them alone wont make you suspect much, maybe an inch or inch and a half extra than normal shoes, BUT when you compare them to regular 1.5inch shoes on the bald guy next to him, only then do you realise how large they really are, almost three times the size.
His trainers are very well and proportionately made to serve the dual purpose of significantly boosting his small stature and at the same time disguising themselves as being relatively normal. And credit to Sly and his millions, he seems to have achieved that.

I think that Dennis Hopper is about 5'8" or 5'7.5 now. Sly is and was 5'9.5(176cm) but with about 3 inches, in total, of lifts, in that pic he looks 6ft+(with shoes on).

Chris - you can't. Mine are custom-made, the only way to go! There is nothing available commercially that will give more than a net height increase of about 3" without severe modifications.

Danimal you seem to know something about bodybuilding but not about the concept of muscle memory? PLEASE! Arnold could build back considerable muscle mass within months if he would start serious work outs. Of course not like in Bodybuilding days but serious. Muscles have memory(thank god) !

Just goes to show never trust movie shots for height references. I've always been in the 5'8.5 / "weak" 5'9 camp for Sly, although don't deny he could have once been a little taller in his prime. Not shorter though, because no one would have ever casted a 5'7 dude to play the heavyweight champion of the world, even Sly himself and those funding Rocky wouldn't have agreed to that (they probably would have instead portrayed himself as a middleweight a la "Raging Bull" DeNiro). I've noticed 3 kinds of people on this thread and a recurring trend: obvious "Sly fans" who say he's 5'9.5 or more, "Sly haters" who say he's shorter than 5'8 and those who've shown an open mind to sway their opinions to whatever is apparently the truth. And those folks seem to all end up saying 5'8.5. Here's an interesting photo from a long-time forgotten oldie with Sly: "Lords of Flatbush":

This movie was made in 1974 "pre-Rocky" and I'm betting "pre-lifts" as Sly was a relative unknown back then. He was probably at his peak height too. The fellow in the foreground is Henry "The Fonz" Winkler who's only 5'6 according to this site but he's too far in the foreground from sly to gauge them from that photo. The fellow to to the left of Sly may provide us with some clues though (although he is slightly closer to the foreground than Sly). Hmmmmm.........??????????

Mike, Arnold is no longer 220 pounds today. He's Max 210. The last time he stated he was 215 was in 1991. He is nowhere near as large as that today. He no longer has any real muscle to speak of. He's fairly lean. He very well could way 190 or less today. I read reports that he was down to 180 pounds in the mid to late 90's. Not sure if I believe that though. I'd like to see this guy gob back up to 230-250 pounds. I wonder if he could even do it nowadays?

in regards to stallone's weight, his body image does change alot from movie to movie depending on his role, but his current weight would depend on his actual true height,..... if sly is really only 5'7 to 5'8 then i'd guess he weighs somewhere in the 170's,if he's 5'8 to 5'9 low 180's, if he's 5'9 to 5'10 id say 185 to 195, the same thing is true for schwarzenegger, ive seen the youtube clips with him on letterman always claiming he's 215-220, well one thing is for sure he's def at least 3 inches taller then stallone, and his body mass is alot bigger/wider, arnold is one of the few people whos over 6 feet and has that much muscle while only supposively weighing 220, but arnold's height is more clear/closer then stallone's, for stallone' height i can honestly see him being barely 5'8 up to 5'9.5 currently, i couldnt take a guess for him, no way, especially after hearing frank and glenns estimates, regardless of sly's height, lifts have made him taller for pictures

Sly is looking right around 2oolbs these days. I really think he looks best in the high 170's or low 180's. I think he prolly looked best in Rambo III. The body type he is sporting in Rocky 6 looks a little to roided up for my liking. It is amazing how his body changes from one movie to another.

Muscle weighs considerably more than fat, so even though one individual may look slimmer than the next, its quite possible he weighs more as he has more muscle.
The weight (or more technically correct mass) of an individual is also influenced by quite an extent by bone density, hence again two individuals who might look the same size may show considerable weight differences.

No vendetta, he is one of my favorite actors. I have much respect for what he has made out of his life. Sly is in great shape and looks amazing for a sixty year old man. I just happen to believe he is 5'8. I am not a 5'8 guy trying to mke myself feel better with this claim, i'm 6'2 and weigh 225lbs. Looking forward to Rocky 6.

Due to big shoes and a well trained posture he now looks as tall as 5,11 IMO.

vaj - Sly wears minimum the exact same heel/lifts as his wife in that pic I think even bigger, he is standing taller on the road than her too. So if his wife is 5'9, Sly is 5'7 in that pic. But it isn't a good pic som he could be taller if the picture was in front of them.

If I was insecure about my height I would turn to wearing lifts which I don't. You do not have to be famous to look short either you are or not. I am not tall but I am comfortable with my height,I am average in shoes at 5'10.25" many think I am 5'11".
I am a huge fan of Sly's and I am not trying to down size him to boost my own self esteem. Many people who have seen him usually see him with his shoes on and trust me he has some type of lifts if he is either wearing his low cut shoes or huge trainers.
The reason I am so convinced he is 5'8" barefooted b/c the people who know him best all claim he is. My girlfriends father is 5'7" and met Sly in Mexico and claims he was the same height as him. He took a picture with Sly which I will ask him if I can post it on this site and I will take one with him too and also post it on this site to compare heights.

If I was insecure about my height I would turn to wearing lifts which I don't. You do not have to be famous to look short either you are or not. I am not tall but I am comfortable with my height,I am average in shoes at 5'10.25" many think I am 5'11".
I am a huge fan of Sly's and I am not trying to down size him to boost my own self esteem. Many people who have seen him usually see him with his shoes on and trust me he has some type of lifts if he is either wearing his low cut shoes or huge trainers.
The reason I am so convinced he is 5'8" barefooted b/c the people who know him best all claim he is. The THING I keep coming back to in my own mind is HOW the heck could someone do more than "shamble" in 4-5 inch lifts, elevators, or whatever? :-) In the Universal Monster Classics they increased the height of the actors by 6", but LOOK at how they moved. And (in any long shots) the big boots were obvious. Glenn Strange BROKE his ankle while they were filming Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein DUE to those boots. Maybe I'm missing something here.

The picture with DeNiro and Sly is very FAR from conclusive, we can't see their feet so no telling what they're both standing on, their footwear, maybe Deniro wears lifts too? etc... plus they both have poor hunched-over postures which really distorts height. In some of the Rocky IV footage, Rocky only looked 3 inches shorter than 6'5" Drago when both of them were in "crouching" boxing stances (when they were really 7" difference). Sorry guys, not even close to "closing the case" with that one ...
About comparing people on talk-shows, all I have to say is that I have eyes, and when two people are very close in height standing straight right next to each other shaking hands (Sly and Letterman), I (and most people) can tell to a reasonable degree that they were both almost the same height - it was a no-brainer. Maybe if there was a 3 inch or more difference it'd be trickier, but I assure you they were VERY close (within an inch). And yes, I'll acknowledge Sly probably needed "the big guns" lifts to accomplish that, but even a 5'10" guy would need to look 6'2" in shoes to look close to Dave's height = 3" lifts + 1" heel. It'd be real tough, if not impossible for a 5'7" to 5'8" guy to pull that off.
And according to Editor Rob's photo, even exceeding 2" lifts (not including 1" heel) starts get real ridiculous, which is why I speculate Sly's "big guns" are probably 4.5" and would have 3" lifts (plus 1.5" heel) max! But he'd rarely wear those, and they're probably made with Nasa technology or whatever!
I think some of you are missing the point here .. like I said, I don't think anyone is denying Sly wears lifts, it's MORE than a irrevocable FACT at this point, it's just some believe all he wears are his "munsters", where others are pointing out that he can still appear a decent height even with 1" lifts.
If he were only 5'7" and ALWAYS needed 4.5" munsters to appear 5'11.5" in shoes (and thus fooling people into thinking he's 5'10.5" barefoot):
i) He'd never be able to look taller than 6" (but has, next to Bruce Willis, Arnie, Letterman, etc...).
ii) ALL of his boxing scenes would appear like "a hobbit fighting an orc" and would require CGFX to "correct" them!

Editor Rob - This is the same type of big trainers that the picture we have on topic where he is sitting next to another guy. The shoes Sly wears are bigger than normal shoes and it's absolutley possible that it could be 3 inches there.

You can not compare really someone on a show. For example on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno the comedian Howy Mendel came out and they seemed to be the same height maybe Leno a little taller. But when the were interviewed them close up on the red carpet a different time Leno was clearly 2" taller.
And yes you do have point about keeping in mind everyone else is wearing shoes so that is when he pulls out the BIG GUNS(larger lifts) he can appear taller.
Whats funny is I ran into Ali from Sly's reality show Contender and Ali claimed on his show that he was 6'1". I liked watching that show and I rutted for Ali because he lives in Houston Tx, I run into him at the mall and I was shocked because he was only 1" taller than me making him 5'11.25" in shoes. I told him about this sight and he laughed and said Sly was his height but he wore larger than normal trainers gestering he had elevator shoes.

As for Claudia Schiffer, if there's any conclusive proof that she's 6' or very close to it, then I'll be totally sold that Sly is a solid 5'9", perhaps even 5'9.5" on a good day. I know a lot famous tall ladies often try to downgrade their heights in order not to appear too "freakishly tall". For instance, Maria Sharapova is something like 6'2" but tells the press she's only 6'. Elle MacPherson is 6' but often tells the press she's only 5'11". Speaking of Elle, since Claudia, her and a few other supermodels run their "Fashion Cafe" thing, wonder if there's any good photos with Claudia together with Elle, that would be a great chance at determining whether Claudia is infact, a solid 6-footer ...

I've seen that fight at least 20 times and I have stopped each time Sly's trainer were in evidence. So I speculate maybe only 1-1.5" extra inside lifts, not including the regular running shoe heel. I think they may have bolstered his height in that shot with Rocky to make him look a more menacing villain. His head is as big as Sly's suggesting a heroic build, but we all know Mr. T has a stocky build, so he's probably shorter than he appears in that shot, especially seeing how short his neck is compared with Rocky's.

I'm 5-7 in the am and 5-6.5 in the pm; the lifts in my dress boots make me as tall as my 6' friend wearing normal slip-ons. I am still perfecting my design even further. You change one millimeter of anything and you have to change everything again. This is truly a process, but worth it if it makes you feel good. I've gotten the comfort level to the point that I don't even feel I'm wearing elevated footwear, using specially-designed foam inserts with memory in conjunction with gel-based orthotics; it actually makes me stand with better posture. I wish I could mass market.

Maybe but seriously how on earth can he be the same height as 6 foot denzel washington in pics, obviously he has bigger shoes then him, but he would need to have like a 3 inch shoe height advantage which would be hard to do i guess and stallone claims he's 5'10 back in the day, who knows maybe he's shrunk an inch or so, although we'll prolly never know

@ziggy: i've looked at the pictures of your custom shoes in the other section and must say that these look really good. i don't like the gator-leather (personally i think that "normal" black leather would look better but thats a personal preference as i'm more into elegant/casual wear) but the shape and all... i would never guess that there are magic lifts inside that give you 4 inches :D
maybe i'll check out my local shoemaker the next days and see if he can do something.

You simply cannot do mass market assembly-line crap for this sort of thing like Richlee or any of the others, as it's so highly customized if you want the max height and the shape to look fashion forward. I wish it could be otherwise.
I walk normal, as I've mastered the art of the "elevator walk" (I've been wearing lifts for 30 years), but I don't wear them daily; only for a few hours when I'm out on the town in public. When I'm on the down low, I don't wear lifts at all and my friends are friends that either don't notice, don't care, or have even said anything. My legs look normal and I wear extra wide pant bottoms to cover the thickness of the instep area. If I can do it, then the celebs with millions obviously can.

Haha, "The Neverending Sly Story" is what I'm calling this thread .. rather than argue whether Sly is short or tall this time around, I'll just say this - to me, what Stallone pulled off in turning himself from a nobody B-movie wannabe actor/screen-writer into an Oscar-nominated/winner-multi-million-doller-movie-icon far exceeds the story of Rocky itself imho, and if he turns out to be 4'7", I'll respect him even more. It's truly mind over muscle, as there are plenty of buffed guys out there, but what Sly and Arnie show you, is there are big brains on top of all that muscle, that can overcome big odds and obstacles, height-deficiencies included. ;oP

As I posted some time ago, I am able to get 4" actual in my custom-made dress boots; 4.75" of total lift. I have had boots and shoes done by DiFabrizio many years back. The 4.5" he's referring to is most likely the total lift and NOT the actual net height. As I explained before, it's all about the physics and the axis point. I stretched it to the absolute limit @ 4" net; over that and your footwear starts looking like orthopedic shoes and is obvious. If you really want to do it right and go the max possible, you'll need to spend a few thousand to get it right and go 100% custom. My next venture: cowboy boots. I might just break my record!

But.......there isn't anyone or another celebrity next to him to compare his height with. Stallone could be wearing "normal size" Nike shox knowing that he would be running with "the average joes", rather than running next to another celebrity that would give away his actual height, for example, running next to Schwarzenegger. These shoes are not called cross trainer but NIKE SHOX R4. They have over 1.5 inches heel and one can fit 2 inches of lifts in them(but not more. It's impossible. OK?) . I know that for a fact. WHY? Because I wore the same shoes with 2 inches in them .Very comfy I have to say.

Frank2 - Sounds like a "patentable" idea to me! :-) OR layer, VELCR lifts, so you could add or PEEL off height in say, 1 cm increments! Weirder things get patented, trust me!
Frank2 - Sounds like a "patentable" idea to me! :-) OR layer, VELCR lifts, so you could add or PEEL off height in say, 1 cm increments! Weirder things get patented, trust me!

OK finally Frank2!! I still say he is 5'9" but at least you admit that your 5'7" sighting could be wrong. There is just no way he can be 5'7". 5'8" is the minimum and I say 5'9.5 max. Never was a full 5'10" and never will be. Still the master of lifts!

hey rob i tryd 1" lifts on they are unwerable in low cut shoes and even in boots its very uncomfortable i could barely walked its funny when i met cruise he looked aleast 5'9" and his outside heels were 1" i never tryd elevators shoes like profesionly made i think that all they can play is 2 to 4 cm so if stallone looks 5'11 it means he is aleast 5'9.5 and cruise is 172 173 range i have a friend that were 2.5" elevator and it barely add him an ich of heightso guys like cruise pitt or stalonne have money to buy expensive elevtor that would add 1.5" to 2" since most people wear 1 to 1.25" heels so they can play 2.5 to 4 cm so stallone might be 176 177 range

hey rob i tryd 1" lifts on they are unwerable in low cut shoes and even in boots its very uncomfortable i could barely walked its funny when i met cruise he looked aleast 5'9" and his outside heels were 1" i never tryd elevators shoes like profesionly made i think that all they can play is 2 to 4 cm so if stallone looks 5'11 it means he is aleast 5'9.5 and cruise is 172 173 range i have a friend that were 2.5" elevator and it barely add him an ich of heightso guys like cruise pitt or stalonne have money to buy expensive elevtor that would add 1.5" to 2" since most people wear 1 to 1.25" heels so they can play 2.5 to 4 cm so stallone might be 176 177 range
Editor Rob yes, they would have custom made elevator's, but there is an inherent limit as to what you can get. Never forget though that Stallone in photo opps is rarely not standing near measurable height, whereas other people might stand 1,2cm lesser.

There is no MUNSTER lifts in casual or dress shoes which is what I always saw him in.in sandles with lifts the smallest he can be is 5-9 by what he looked to me.

Having read everyones views and looked at all the pictures I have to side with the school of thought that says he is 5'8". Some of his footwear is ridiculous and all the BEST pictures, that show his entire body and footwear, suggest he is 5'8" to me. Particularly the one with travolta where he has his big cowboy boots on and the one with Bruce and Arnie where they are digging. One thing is for sure, your footwear can make you taller but it can't make you shrink!! We have all seen the Rocky films, we have all seen a lot of Sly over the years. 5'10" is a real no way for me. I think he should be downgraded to the 5'8" that sensible people know he really is!!

Just food for thought .. if a fresh set of eyes were reading this thread to see that Sly's height guesstimates range from 5'7" to 5'10" and so many people adamantly justifying their claims with all their hard-evidence, wouldn't it then be STUPID of them to claim that Sly's either 5'7" or 5'10"? Just a thought ...

One of the lessons we've learned from the Arnold Scharzenegger thread, is that we can't trust pics, especially ones where the figures aren't standing excatly on the same picture plane, and recede into the distance. The laws of perspective dictate that objects closer to the camera appear larger, those further are smaller (also known as "foreshortening" to the artist-types). As miniscule as the differences are, they can be huge in measring something like height, which is something that needs to be within inches or even centimeters to be correct.

Again, Sly surrounded himself with short people in the first Rocky - Burt Young, Burgess Meredith, Talia Shire - why? I don't believe Sly can look over 6 feet. On any show I've every seen him on (not photograph), I have never seen Sly look 6 ft. Never. I don't trust photographs of Stallone. Too much can be done with perception, tricks, staging, etc. Stallone is one person who will make sure every photograph is taken to minimize his shorter height or maximize the perception he is taller. All I can say is if Sly is truly 5'7 he is the master of illusion. you can see his feet in one of the photos posted by Zach, in which he looks taller than Tom Jones with Jones nearer the camera. As such the shoes he has on must be giving him 5 to 6 inches if he is truly 5'7...aren't they called stilts?

stallone is like 5'9 i'd say with his increase in footwear i believe glenn in saying he can look 6 feet, but frank has seen him shorter and at 5'11 frank's a good comparision to sly, wish we could get a post of frank/sly, anyways in the 3rd pic with sly arnie and willis, where stallone isnt stretching, arnold is 3 inches taller then both of them, that 2nd pic wow i dont know what to say, sly looks the tallest but if anyone is saying look arnold's only 5'10, whats willis 5'8?? arnold is 2-3 inches taller in every arnold/willis pic ive seen, theres some sly pics with himself and carl weathers (6'1), where carl towers over him, and 1 or 2 where stallone is actually almost as tall as him, and the more i see that glenn pic sly looks closer to 5'11 instead of 5'10, but if he claims 5'10 thats his MAX height, prolly shorter, frnak2 good reminder of the early pics of bruce/sly/arnie where sly is definetely the shortest, i wonder if stallone pays bruce and arnie to wear smaller footwear then him so he can look taller, and i appreciate glenn and franks honesty for giving accurate height estimates, i must say sly is the MOST unique person for height on this website by a long shot, someone should ask arnie and willis how stallone grew, and get their opinions

Zach, loved your post regarding footwear because it shows the extent of the crazy thoughts some people here have regarding lifts. I have actual experience with lifts because I occassionally wear them to give me a little bit of extra height. The truth is that lifts only give a slight boost to height, the actual difference between regular shoes and lifts is usually 1.5
